History

"The typeface of our time" -Paul Renner Futura is a geometric sans serif typeface designed by Paul Renner in 19241926. After his collaboration with a public housing program in Frankfurt, Germany, it lead to the typeface commercial release in 1927 by the Bauer Type Foundry. This typeface is based on geometric shapes inspired by the Bauhaus design philosophy (1919-1933) and the Architype Renner typeface. Futura was intended to be used as body text in books, but was seen more in headlines and subheads in advertisements. The typeface became more popular after being featured on the plaque on the space module “Eagle� left by the astronauts of Apollo 11 in 1969. However, this lead to the Art Directors Against Futura Extra Bold Condensed Movement in 1992. The general public did not agree to this petition and Futura was continued to be seen in various advertisements. Futura has influenced the creations of Kabel and Century Gothic. book 10/16pt

"On the script of the future" -Paul Renner Paul Friedrich August Renner (1878-1956) was a german typeface designer that grew up in Wernigerode, Germany and died in Hรถdingen. His creation of the Futura typeface was timeless and is still used in the present day through print and digital purposes such as headlines, sub headlines, and body text. Renner wanted to create a mixture of both Gothic and Roman typefaces and believed in the Bauhaus design philosophy that functionality should be equally as important as design. Besides the inspirational typeface designer he was, he also spent his time writing. His most well known books was Typografie als Kunst (Typography as Art) and Die Kunst der Typographie (The Art of Typography). His works has inspired other typeface designers and created a bridge between the late 19th and early 20th century. book 10/16pt

Hegner instantly fell in love with Renner's work and multiple revisions later that became futura.
