A BRITISH STREETWEAR BRAND DESIGNED IN ENGLAND
THE BRAND HISTORY VISUAL TIMELINE

ADDICT®
BRITISH STREETWEAR BRAND Addict is a British clothing brand in the streetwear/lifestyle genre based in the UK Established in 1996, the brand is widely recognised as the longest standing British Streetwear brand in the market today. Addict remains a design led company, producing all apparel designs, graphic material and product ranges in-house, with the focus on product quality, originality and function, staying true to the brand’s core values and letting the brand evolve naturally rather than bending to fit in with fashion. The brand has built its reputation on a ‘less is more’ approach, producing good quality, clean, minimally branded, ‘real’ product that has wide crossover appeal with a strong emphasis on design detail, premium fabrics and quality manufacturing. The name ‘Addict’ representing peoples passions in life, positive addictions like music, art, design, board sports and an active lifestyle. “Minimal branding, top quality materials and an array of high profile collaborations, Addict’s heritage speaks for itself spanning the divide between street and sport…” Menswear Buyer Magazine. Addict was the brainchild of co founders designer Chris Carden-Jones and David Jefferies (sales) who’s common interests and shared influences help shape the brands unique appeal. Inspired by pioneering US streetwear brands like Stussy, Freshjive, Fuct and X-Large and skateboarding, snowboarding and their surrounding cultures the idea was to create a streetwear brand built on quality and design but with a UK twist. Growing up in the UK and being heavily influenced by the birth of trainer culture and terrace casual sportswear in the 80’s and then military inspired brands like Stone Island and CP Company as well as a healthy obsession with outdoors gear brands like The North Face and Patagonia, this melting pot of tastes and influences helped define the look and feel of Addict, and specifically the brands outerwear styles very early on. From humble beginnings with screen printed T-shirts and sweats garment dyed in custom colours the brand began making a name for itself in the UK independent store market and quickly progressed into cut and sew. A meeting with performance fleece fabric manufacturer Polartec led to a UK outerwear factory contact and in 1998 Addict launched its first ‘made in the UK’ outerwear collection. Through this UK based outerwear factory we were able to make jackets and fleece that worked like the performance outdoors brands but didn’t look like traditional outdoor clothing, it was this authenticity and quality that set the brand apart from other skate apparel brands of the time. Addict went on to develop mens and womens product ranges across all categories including outerwear, sweats, jersey, shirts, denim, wovens, knits, luggage, headwear and accessories. Throughout the years Addict went on to work with global giants like Casio G-Shock, Vans, Lucasfilm, Disney, Marvel, DC Comics and Microsoft as well as a string of cool, co-branded collaborations with some of the worlds most talented artists from music design, graffiti, illustration, comic book and street art. These relationships and projects formed a core part of the brands appeal and became an integral part of the brand’s DNA. Addict became established in the UK selling to the best independents and multiples including Size?, Urban Industry, Well Gosh, Kong, Natterjacks, Forum, Chimp and ASOS to name a few, and internationally sold in over 19 countries including Italy, Japan, Germany, Benelux, Hong Kong, North America and Russia and has a growing international e-commerce business. Addict Holdings owns the registered trademarks for Addict in class 25, 9 & 18 in the UK & EU, class 25 & 35 in USA/North America, class 25 in Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. What follows is a visual timeline of the brand’s activities and projects from conception to the current day…
ADDICT®
WORKING WITH GLOBAL BRANDS & ARTISTS As a forward thinking brand in it’s field, Addict regularly collaborates on specialist projects with a select range of globally renowned brands and artists to create exclusive, limited edition, unique products. Whether with large global brands such as Casio G-Shock, Vans, THQ, Vango and Microsoft or core independent brands like Canadian based Endeavor Snowboards, New York’s Brooklyn Machine Works and California based Spy Optic all projects are executed and managed with careful attention to detail from the product itself right down to the custom packaging and labelling.
LICENSES WITH GLOBAL BRANDS Addict has teamed up via official licenses to create unique dual branded products with some of the worlds biggest entertainment brands including Lucasfilm for the Star Wars trilogy ‘icons’ artist series, Marvel Comics artist and mainline collections, Disney with the street art inspired BLOC28 ranges, DC Comics Superman and Batman and Panini with legendary Italian comic book artist Milo Manara. These collaborations present classic, popular, global iconic characters re-interpreted in the Addict handwriting combined with the artists style to create desirable and collectible limited edition products.
COLLABORATION WITH CLOTHING BRANDS Addict have worked with some of the original pioneers of the streetwear scene at various times over the years. With the title of ‘The Originator Series’ Addict released iconic graphics customised and co-branded from Freshjive (LA), X-Large (LA), Fuct (LA) and its founder Erik Brunetti. The series paid homage to these pioneering Californian based brands ‘the originators’ who had been around since day one, who all played their part in defining and shaping the streetwear genre.
ARTIST SERIES PRODUCTS Specialist ‘Artist series’ T-shirt and apparel projects have been successfully produced with a select range of world class artists including visual futurist Syd Mead who’s many works include Bladerunner (1982) and Tron (1982), aswell as some of the most influential and talented designers, illustrators and graffiti artists practising today, UK typographic legend Swifty, Mode 2, INSA, She One, C-Law, Mitch, Goldie, Scrawl Collective, Mr Jago, Will Barras, OTwo, Mark Ward, Jon Burgerman, Guy Featherstone, Usugrow (Japan), Stash (US), Meggs (AUS), Hydro74 (US) and BJ Betts (US) to name a few. These projects create desirable limited edition ‘collectible’ pieces that connect directly to the intended target audience providing access to the artist through the tee shirts and to the brand through the creation of co-branded product.
1994 FOUNDATION
IDEA OF A BRAND The idea of starting a brand was Inspired and influenced by pioneering US streetwear brands like Stussy, Freshjive, Fuct and X-Large that took elements of skate, preppy, vintage and casual and mixed it up into this new style. There was a certain ‘can do’ DIY attitude about them and this was something we wanted to do from the UK. After many a visit to Bond International Store in Newburgh street, a hub of the early UK streetwear scene and many conversations and ideas later, the idea for Addict began to take shape…

The ‘Battletank’ print uses the orignal early concept art sketches for the Tank in the cult film Tron (1982). Syd Mead writes, “The tank featured in Tron started as a quick review of the images which instantly say ‘tank’. The characteristic shape of treads, turret and gun were then pre-proportioned and re-combined to create the sleek vehicle shown here. The elevation and plan view (used in the jacket print) drawings were used to produce the final computer generated solid image.”

back print detail
Offiicilly licensed by Walt Disney who had the foresight to back the film this set of tees documents one of the true gems of our time… End of line…
MITCH Interview - Early influences?: As a tiny child - Ralph McQuarrie (Star Wars chief illustrator). As a schoolboy - Henry Chalfont & Martha Cooper’s ‘Subway & Spraycan Art’ books and as a youth - Ron Lim (Silver Surfer/Marvel comics’ penciler)
How do you chose clients?: They choose me! Thankfully most jobs originate from a certain artistic mutual appreciation. Who’ve you worked for…?: Couldn’t possibly list them all, its been over 10 years!
When did your portrait style that’s so recognisable first surface?: It was born from necessity. I was looking for more than just ‘the photo and some type’ approach, which has been a music industry standard for so long. So I developed an illustration style that was both ‘painted’ and realistic. Somewhere between graphics, graffiti & comic book. The first time this style made it to print was on Sie’s ‘Lost Control’ LP & 12” for Pussyfoot Records in 2002. It later became synonymous with the Amp Fiddler ‘Waltz of a Ghetto Fly’ campaign from 2003 onwards.
Have you ever worked in conjuction with other artists if so what on?: I’ve been involved in some excellent group shows such as: Candela Festiva, Puerto Rico - with the Chaser crew (Swifty & Mode 2) Miami Vices/Art Basel, Miami - with Doze Green, Swoon, Jose Parla (& many others). Loud Graphix, Berlin - with Delta, Machine, Parra (& many others). I’ve so collaborated on cover artwork for We Love You & Blak Twang with Banksy and not forgetting the Addict ‘joint’ T’s with Swifty!
How do you describe your technique?: Essentially its a hand done ‘vectorisation’ process, with spray-paint dribbles! What’s the significance of THE drip? it’s almost like a signature within your work?: Its become a signature by default. I’ve tried lots of other drips....but I guess ‘that’ drip always seemed to finish the illustration so well. Perhaps its the perfect drip? Just how influential do you think films like Tron have been in the design/graphics/popular culture?: Films like Tron are pretty much essential. There’s certainly a resurgence in retro - CAD right now. Perhaps most credit is due to Syd Mead - without his influence I think the visual landscape of today would be a very different place. Apart from your work with Addict do you work solely in the music business?: Design for music has kept me busy for the last 10yrs: cover artwork, websites, event visuals, music video etc. More recently however, things have become even more diverse: including more ‘signature’ products, advertising projects, art shows & some cheeky ‘viral’ marketing.
Most respected?: I gotta say the best show of paintings I’ve seen recently was Futura and Jose Parla’s ‘Pirate Utopias’ exhibition at Elms Lesters (July 07) Art was often thought of as a doss at school, what advice would you give to the kids these days who might have this attitude?: Personally I would always look forward to art at school, but I gotta say - I sometimes caught up on some sleep during art history lessons! I would advise any ‘bored by art’ kids to watch an old documentary film from the 80’s called Style Wars - that might inspire them a little more than ancient portraits of religious icons & rich people! How important is pen and paper still to you before you go to the mac?: There’s lots of really talented digital artists out there, but its easy to get trapped in a world of plug ins and filters. I always get new ideas from painting & doodling. Also its much harder to copy a ‘drawing’ style. Finally, your top five films of all time…: That’s a hard one........ in no particular order: Akira, all Star Wars films, Blade Runner, Tron, 2001, Caddyshack, Alien, Night Watch, Sleeper.........is that more than 5? Check out Mitch’s work at myspace.com/mitchybwoy and online for Tron at www.tron-sector.com and www.disney.com
