Abandoned History

By: Addison Hinterweger

Introductory Paragraph I have always seemed to get a thrill from anything scary. Whether haunted houses or abandoned buildings, as a kid I was never scared of them, just fascinated. My photo essay includes pictures from the abandoned Topeka State Hospital campus built in 1872 where some patients were chained, abused, and neglected. Other pictures were taken at Menningers Psychopathic Hospital and Sanitarium. This clinic has been abandoned since 2003. Other photos were taken from an abandoned house on Highway 56 outside Overbrook. Finally, the last location is an unofficial Pony Express stop that has such been left to fall down.

The side view of the entrance to a side building on the campus of the Topeka State Hospital.

On the porch of the entrance, there is a ripped up vent where someone had broken in through the hole.

Shot from a hole in a shattered window, this glass is also shattered inside the building.

Shot from the same window as the picture above, an abandoned restroom hides.

At the corner of the porch, there have been supports put in place to keep the overhang from collapsing.

Using the fence and broken glass as a frame from another broken window,in this shot is a room with broken furniture and torn walls.

This shows a different angle of the bathroom shown earlier. In this photo, you can see more debris from the walls and floor.

On ground level was a hole in the building that revealed this basement. There is graffiti, an old bike, and piping.

In the same basement this picture shows more piping and a mysterious door that any adventure-seeking person would want to go through.

The entrance to another building on the campus has been boarded and covered with chain link fence.

On the backside of the other building, there were steps to a side door with rusty railing.

This was taken from under the fire escape stairs where many patients tried to escape when the hospital was still open.

This photo was taken behind many trees at the Menninger Psychopathic Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.

This is a shot of the clocktower at the Menninger clinic.

Another building on the Menninger Clinic site which has an incinerator.

This shows the same clocktower as before, but the lighting and the sky gives this photo an eerie feel.

On the North side of Highway 56, west of overbrook, is an abandoned farmhouse. Hidden behind these trees, you get a glimpse of this abandoned structure.

An old pony express stop can be found on Highway 56, east of Overbrook. With most of the building falling down, there is still an old fence and the main part of the building.
