about this

Issue

Community is at the core of what makes Vermont such an extraordinary place to live. Knowing your neighbor, your grocer, dentist, banker, or car salesman by name is what helps us stick together. Volunteering and engaging in public conversations, knowing that your voice can actually make a difference, is what keeps us engaged. That is what this special section, Profiles in Community, is all about. Each individual and each business, institution or professional has a role to play that’s unique. And through each of our efforts, we create a vibrant community. We encourage you to sit down with this thick special supplement and take time out of your busy day to reflect on the importance of working together to make our towns and state a great place to live and work, while also recognizing that one of the joys of living in small towns is getting to know one another and the sense that we are all part of a greater whole. In our daily interactions we greet each other in many different settings: as cutomer and retailer, client and professional, neighbor and friend. Sometimes it’s an impromptu chat on Main Street or at a school function; sometimes it’s a lively exchange at town meeting; sometimes it’s just a friendly wave or a nod at the post office or in a store. It’s a common interaction, often overlooked, but it makes living here more personal, more intimate, more rewarding. That’s the root of this special section. For the past 29 years, we have published it (formerly called Meet Your Business & Professional Community) to help our readers know a little bit more about the people who play such a vital role in our communities. In this year’s section, we visited more than 175 area businesses to snap their photos, introduce their teams and tell their unique stories. While the stories vary widely, the focus within each story serves as a tribute to the hard-working employees and employers who make each business the success that it is. We hope you enjoy these pages and that you take the time to reacquaint yourself with these businesses — and the names of their employees. Our close-knit communities have much to offer, not only in products and services, but also in the smiles of those who greet us each day and the thanks we offer in return. The Editors

Celebrating 69 years of covering Addison County! How do the numbers 5,000, 103, 69, and 1946 go together? Simple. Since 1946, the Addison Independent has been proud to bring the best community news coverage to the residents of Addison County for the past 69 years. Today, we publish 103 issues each year (we skip one Monday issue after Christmas), generating about 5,000 pages of local news each year — all news that matters to YOU!

MISSION REFLECTS OUR FOCUS ON QUALITY Our mission is to report the day-to-day events of the county, capturing the county’s weekly life with words and photos to serve as a mirror to reflect life as it’s being lived, and to shine light on the issues that need illuminating. We firmly believe that quality content is worth the expense and effort, and that the high quality of our reporting, photography, advertising, customer service, and the thoroughness of event coverage is what will continue to set us apart from the competition. We strive to be the best we can be for our customers and readers.

COME VISIT US DIGITALLY! We’ve been on the web for more than a decade and our website has won state and New England awards for its excellence! Why? Because we put the same energy and effort into making it a useful resources as we do our print editions. You can view the entire paper via flip-page function (seeing the actual pages and advertising just as it appears in the print edition), or view the news of the day online with featured news, sports, community events and activities and commentary. Online, we also feature slide shows, local videos and an expanded number of photos that we didn’t have room for in the newspaper. It’s mostly a paid site, but well worth the extra $10 a year when added to the print edition. It’s exciting, fun and up-to-date — with breaking news featured there first when it happens. Along with most people and businesses in this day and age, we’re also active on social media platforms that keep the news flowing to our diverse audience wherever they want to find us.

We’re excited about our future prospects and eager to share our expertise in all things local with you, your family and friends. Stay in touch; we will too.

Vermont Homeowners Recommend

“We looked into installing a solar system ten to twelve years ago. I wish we had done it back then. The payback has been amazing. Bristol Electronics is such a friendly company. The guys are great, everyone is easy to work with and so professional. When I build a new home in the future, I will definitely plan on incorporating solar and using Bristol Electronics.” Karen – New Haven, VT

“The Bristol Electronics people are very pleasant to work with. We looked at rental vs. ownership and it became clear that ownership was a better deal in the long run. The installation time was very quick. We expect to pay off our loan in 10 years and then we’ll have free electricity for the rest of our lives. Bristol Electronics is very professional. The process was easy and we are very happy.” Gerry & Claire Tetrault – Bristol, VT

213 EXCHANGE STREET MIDDLEBURY, VT - Solar Powered - 24 Hour Card Access NORTON LATOURELLE

Carving whimsical art By ELSIE LYNN PARINI It’s not often you hear a woodworker say, “I don’t make anything you can use.” That is, until you meet Norton Latourelle. “This will be my 40th year as a full-time artist,” Latourelle wrote in a recent description of his career. “I mainly carve birds, animals and dogs, but have also done many paintings through the years,” continued the upstate New York native. “My father was a furniture maker and earlier in my career I made a few pieces of quarter-, half- and fullscale furniture. I soon decided I did not want to do functional work at all and quickly began to work on simple pieces of art.” Latourelle and his wife, Marlene, run Norton’s Gallery, which is in Orwell (with a Shoreham address) on Route 73 near the Ticonderoga ferry landing. Latourelle describes his art as “simple, whimsical and representative in form.” “My work hopefully captures what I see as the essence of my subject,” he explained. “I use photographs, identification handbooks and personal observation as my guides. I work with a sense of freedom and am not totally concerned about how any one piece duplicates its model. I try to achieve a visible connection between all of my creations and expect this to transcend into a personal style. There should be some one thing that carries through over the last 40 years and I believe I can achieve this if I work always to please myself first, without outside direction or criticism.” Latourelle uses native Eastern white pine sourced from a sawmill in West Haven to create his blocky yet expressive dogs, cats, birds and other creations. “I buy it rough-sawed in a variety of widths and thicknesses,” he added. “I laminate much of my work, which virtually eliminates checking and increases overall dependability and lifespan. I guarantee everything I do for my lifetime, including assaults from the family dog.”

Over four decades, Latourelle, a graduate of Boston College with a degree in marketing, says the two biggest challenges in his business are survival and motivation. “As I’ve gotten older, survival is easier,” said the 65-year-old artist. “Our business is word of mouth and the return of collectors and admirers year after year eases the need to advertise and find ways to stimulate sales. Many become friends and add to the benefits of such a lifestyle. Motivation seems to become harder over time. The pressures to produce year in and year out can be wearing. So I am never without new direction. and a stack of ideas written on small pieces of paper piled on the bench is always growing. “I feel inspiration is all around us,” Latourelle continued. “We just have to keep our eyes open and take it all in. We need to question the simpler, smaller things in life. Understanding the natural world and accepting its rules is something I strive for. A sense of humor is a must in attempting to keep things in balance.” Humor is central to Latourelle’s work ethic. “Not taking things too seriously is freeing,” he said. “It is not without knowing the threats, but having the ability to go on despite them. What use would there be to making things without this approach?” Latourelle continues to produce his work from a renovated barn on the southern shores of Lake Champlain just a mile south from the Fort Ti Ferry landing, where he and Marlene welcome the public to visit their gallery. “A simple, sustainable, do-it-yourself lifestyle is probably the greatest reward,” Latourelle reflected. “Being your own boss can be risky but after all these years it seems to be the only way. I have also been very lucky … We found a wonderful place to live, work and play.”

Makin’ a living 'tinkering’ BY CHRISTY LYNN MIDDLEBURY — Some people are born tinkerers. They always have an object in hand and an idea in mind, love different materials and are fascinated by functionality. Tinkerers take things apart and put them back together. They look for answers and try to solve puzzles. David Cole is a tinkerer. More specifically, Cole is a mechanical engineer and consultant who operates a small business called Mechanical Advantage out of a small workspace on Route 7 south in Middlebury. His primary work is developing prototypes for medical device companies using sophisticated design software like CAD (computer-aided design) and CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) to produce highly refined tools for use in some of the most difficult surgical procedures in medicine. Ah, what? I know what you’re thinking: that guy’s in Middlebury? Yes, he is. Cole works in a low-profile shop filled with large and intimidating-looking machines (costing tens of thousands of dollars) that he uses to fabricate small and large gadgets designed for many highly technical tasks. So, why did he choose Middlebury and what path did he follow to end up here? Cole was, in fact, a member of the Middlebury Union High School class of 1988 and also a Middlebury College graduate in 1992 (majoring in physics). Following his college graduation, Cole had a moment of reckoning when he realized that he had a college degree but didn’t know how to fix his own car when it broke down. For a tinkerer, that’s an unsettling thought. “I did a senior project in auto mechanics at MUHS, but I did want to learn more after Middlebury College,” Cole says. “Some graduates tour Europe to indulge themselves — I went to auto mechanics school.” Soon enough, however, Cole decided to again return to school, this time to Purdue to earn a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. Out of graduate school, Cole moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to work for Lockheed Martin for a brief period before moving on to work for a series of small start-up companies in the medical devices industry. Supported largely by venture capitalists and other research and development projects, Cole says he was used to working on tight deadlines to come up with concepts and prototypes that delivered the innovative ideas the companies were seeking. “You can’t expect to figure it all out at the beginning with start-ups, but a lot of ideas produce nuggets that lead to other ideas that lead to something really innovative,” Cole says. One such case was when Cole and his team were working on a new procedural tool that could alter the possibilities for heart bypass surgeries through a new stent system. The struggle was to figure out how to help the tissue repair itself and bind properly when sutures would have to be as small as three one-thousandths of an inch. As a true tinkerer might do, Cole started to think about alternative methods of binding and came up with the idea to use magnetic rings that would sandwich vascular tissue together and encourage a successful bond. “The advantage of the magnets was that they applied force to the tissue to seal and connect the new blood vessel, the graft, to the original blood

vessel on the coronary artery, to the heart,” Cole said. Sure enough, prototypes were highly successful and medical trials showed promising results. The technology was purchased by a large medical device company, Medtronic, in 2003. The company excitedly pursued further market approval for the technology, but has since chosen not to release it. Cole says he’s used to this kind of thing in the medical industry, whereby a new device could revolutionize a procedure like heart surgery and render it less invasive and easier for doctors to perform, but they hold it on their shelves until the “market is ready” or investors and budgets are deemed capable of supporting the release. This was also the way of Cole’s more recent project, one he started working on in partnership with the medical device company BaroSense (later acquired by a large medical device company) to find a procedural cure for obesity through a version of bariatric surgery. The device Cole engineered is a kind of vacuum tool that is inserted into the stomach through the digestive tract and acts a bit like Pac-Man once inside the stomach. When in action, the device collects the stomach tissue in its casing and inserts a neat ring of staples to hold it together, effectively making pleats to reduce the volume of the stomach and therefore help the patient eat less and lose the desired weight. Again, while this device has produced promising results in testing phases and has been approved for use, it has yet to be released by the company. Nonetheless, Cole doesn’t seem discouraged by the fact that his inventions aren’t in doctors’ toolboxes yet. Instead, he enjoys the challenges he’s given and continues to enjoy the process of finding solutions to complex problems. “I really do love the tinkering aspect of the work,” he says. Cole moved back to Middlebury in September of 2013 with his wife, Robin, and children. Robin helps in the business as the accountant and bookkeeper, as well as consultant and collaborator. She is also a talented seamstress and has a large sewing station in one corner of the office space. Recently, she sewed a prototype of a new chest belt that could be used for the next generation of a CPR machine used in ambulances and emergency care crews. Not surprisingly, she likes to tinker, too.

Do you need a change?

Foot reflexology, developed in ancient times, is now used as a noninvasive healing therapy. It is based on the knowledge that there are reflexes in the feet, which correspond to every organ, gland, and each part of the body. Therapeutically applying pressure with the fingers and thumbs to particular points in the feet serves to relax tension, relieve stress, improve circulation, balance energy, and restore the natural functioning of the related areas in the body. Hour long sessions will include a soothing footbath, the application of reflexology techniques, and a gentle foot message.

Take achievable steps.

When an individual has pain, the practioner focuses on removing the energy congestion so that the pain level is reduced. Think of times when you have been stressed and how it affected your body. You may have experienced muscle tightness in your neck and shoulders, developed a headache or had discomfort in other parts of your body. Stress causes congestion in our energy system. Healing Touch techniques help to relieve that congestion.

Sunrise Orchards is a 200 acre, family owned and operated, wholesale apple farm located in Cornwall, VT and devoted to growing excellent apples for our local community as well as the entire Northeast region. We usually grow about 130,000 bushels of apples each year, although it varies widely depending on weather. We grow many varieties such as McIntosh, Empire, Cortland, Honeycrisp, Macoun, Red Delicious, Jonagold, Granny Smith, Gala and Paula Red. When harvest begins at Sunrise Orchards in mid-August, we pack and distribute our apples through our local delivery route all over Vermont and outside the state to markets in Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. We store about half of our crop in refrigerated and controlled atmosphere storage (at Vermont Refrigerated Storage in Shoreham, VT) and pack it throughout the winter and spring, continuing to distribute to all of our customers. In mid-May, just about when we finish selling all the apples, we start a new season all over again with a beautiful bloom.

Thank you for your support of our farm. 44 Main Street Middlebury, VT 05753 802-388-4242 www.middvermontrealestate.com

elebrating 50 Years of Packard of Vermont

Amos Roleau III started working on cars at a very young age as it was the one thing that he really loved doing. At 12 years old, he had 3 cars of his own. He had a passion for tinkering on them, tearing them apart and putting them back together. Throughout the early 1960’s Amos worked in body shops in Kansas, New Jersey and Vermont. In June of 1965 he converted the family dairy barn into a two bay automotive shop and started his own business, Packard of Vermont. Both Amos’s father and grandfather owned Packard automobiles. Amos himself learned to drive in a Packard. Since The Packard Motor Car Company had stopped producing cars in the late 1950’s, Amos was free to use the name for his new business. Amos started out working on Packards, but as they became less popular, he switched to air-cooled Volkswagens. Everybody had one, and if they didn’t have one, they wanted to buy one. In the 1970’s when VW stopped producing aircooled models, Amos became ‘disenchanted’ with them. His brother, Bill, convinced him to take on repairing Volvos because they were known for being tough and reliable. Packard of Vermont has been specializing in Volvo sales and repair ever since.

Amos Roleau III – First job before setting up new shop in June of 1965. 1932 Auburn Cabrolet

In 2007 Amos was diagnosed with cancer. He built a brand new, state-of-the-art shop and his youngest son, John, took over daily operations at Packard of Vermont. Today Amos can often be found helping out in the shop. He still enjoys getting his hands dirty working on older model Volvos.

Thank you to our loyal customers, both old and new, who have trusted us with their automotive needs. We wouldn’t be celebrating this milestone without the support of our community!

Come help us celebrate our 50th Anniversary!

BY LISA LYNN MIDDLEBURY — There are few people as passionate and knowledgeable about food in Vermont as Middlebury’s Meghan Sheradin. Sheradin grew up in farm country in upstate New York where her father ran the feed mill and her grandfather was a subsistance farmer. While in school, she spent her summers milking, running vegetables into the New York City farmers’ markets and working on a 4-H summer staff. A nationally competitive equestrian, Sheradin has ridden herd on 450 head of cattle in Wyoming, interned at Shelburne Farms’ farm education programs, worked as a cheesemaker with Dancing Cow in Bridport and raised and sold Normandy heifers. She loves good food and can rhapsodize about the seasoning in an MEGHAN SHERADIN obscure dish she EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ate three years ago. VERMONT FRESH NETWORK Yet Sheradin sounds as surprised as anyone at her career path. After graduating from Cornell University in 1995, she came to the University of Vermont to earn a graduate degree in community development and applied economics. She got a part-time job working for the Vermont Fresh Network in 2003 and has never really left. “It’s the most amazing job in the world,” she gushes. “As executive director I get to talk with these incredible farmers and producers.” For the past 19 years, the Vermont Fresh Network has been connecting farmers, fishermen and food producers with restaurants, chefs and businesses around the state. The first statewide organization of its kind, Vermon Fresh Network has, in Sheradin’s words “been a resource to help farmers and chefs meet and learn from one another.” Thanks in part to the Network, Vermont has led

the local food movement, grown farming jobs in the state and preserved its working landscape. As executive director, Sheradin works directly with members to ensure they meet the VFN standards that qualify a member to display the green logo. Member restaurants must annually source at least 15 percent of their ingredients locally, have a diversity of Vermont products on their menus, and work with a minimum of six farms or producers. Lastly, they must participate in Vermont events and be involved in the food and farm community. “My job is to help chefs and farmers meet those criteria and grow their businesses,” says Sheradin, who helps set up an annual statewide matchmaker event between farmers and buyers. On any given day, Sheradin will be out on a farm learning about new produce, working with fishermen on Lake Champlain, or helping a chef find a local solution to a hard-to-find ingredient. She’s also worked with universities, schools, hospitals, markets and resorts to increase the volume of local food they purchase. “We work with anyone who is making food choices,” says Sheradin. This summer, she’s working to put on the first Open Farms Week (modeled after the Artist’s Open Studio Weekend) Aug. 3-9, with participating farms and events listed at DigInVt.com, the agritourism site that VFN runs. She organizes VFN’s Farmer’s Dinner series and works with her team to put out Fresh Feed, an e-newsletter that highlights food news from around the state. “Working with farmers and chefs is the best part of the job,” says Sheradin. The hardest part? Writing the grants and soliciting the donations and membership support that keep the not-for-profit organization going. Sheradin loves to cook, and her signature dish is Polpettone made from veal calves she has raised (“It’s from a great recipe in Vermonter Molly Stevens’ All About Braising cookbook,” she says.). While she and her partner, Gregory O’Brien, like to entertain at home, her favorite event to host each year is what she calls “the best dinner party in Vermont.” On the first Sunday in August, the VFN brings together 25 of the state’s top chefs and top farmers for the VFN Annual Forum and Picnic at the Coach Barn at Shelburne Farms; it serves 250. “It’s a grazing dinner with the most amazing food and people — all my favorites,” she says. And who better to host.

The mill produced custom sawed Lumber primarily used for furniture; Harry began sawing 2”x2” hardwood squares used for making butter tubs. In 1950 the retail building material business was started. Harry retired in 1969 leaving the business to his son Rodney and sons-in-law Richard Perry and Wyman Thomas. Richard Miller came on as a partner in 1985 and was so until 2009. He continues now on a part-time basis. With the semi-retiring of Rick and the loss of Dennis in 2009 another chapter has been started. Long time employees Ron Warner and Tim Comes are partnering with Mark and Cindy to manage the business, ensuring that Goodro Lumber Company will continue to successfully offer great customer service, quality materials and lasting value.

A DECADE OF DISTINCTION From day one, more than 10 years ago, I established a tradition of appreciating every opportunity my customers offered. Whether custom designing window treatments, or consulting on paint and flooring, every project’s been a joy for the last 10 years. Each client presents a new chance to add color and beauty to someone’s home and life. While consistency is comforting, change can be exciting. And if you’re looking for new ideas for your home, or a mission makeover, you can count on me to be here, as I have been for a decade. Hope to see you soon. Connie Carroll, owner

Aching Back? Stiff Neck? Sore Shoulder? Cranky Hip?

Gill LaRoche, center, has been repairing boat engines and working on boats since first starting at Vergennes Marine in 1970, while son Marc, right, joined the business 20 years ago. Granddaughter and niece, Morgan, has been there the past three summers. Not pictured is Gill’s wife, Jeanne, who has done the books, and much more, from the get-go.

T

hirty-two years ago, Gill and Jeanne LaRoche opened Gill’s Place Boat Repair at their Salisbury home. Their son, Marc, joined the business 20 years ago, and today they have expanded to selling and installing boat lifts and docks, as well as servicing motor boats and snowmobiles. Service, however, has always been the heart of their business. With more than 50 years of experience working on boats (Gill started in 1970 at Vergennes Marine and since 1983 out of their home in Salisbury), Gill has seen it all and knows boats and engines inside and out. Marc has also been working on engines — boats, go-carts and snowmobiles — for more than 20 years and says of working with his Dad that he has “learned from the best.” Granddaughter Morgan, a rising senior at Green Mountain College and neice of Marc’s, has been part of the family business for the past three years in the front office and in the boat yard in the summers.

Boat owners who have their boats stored at Gill’s Place also get their boats tuned up, washed and delivered in time for summer simply by calling at least a week ahead of expected delivery. Jeanne, not pictured, has served as bookkeeper, and errand-runner, of the business for the past 32 years. Of their marriage of 50-plus years, and their teamwork in business, she says simply: “we work good together; always have.”

he Middlebury Business Development Fund was initially funded in 2013. Our work is focused on three primary dynamics – the three legs of our stool: • Business Development and Prospecting – identifying and communicating with companies and entrepreneurs that we believe can thrive via the special attributes inherent in our community. • Innovation and Technology-Based Economic Development – helping bring new technologies to the marketplace or assisting entrepreneurs with their innovative business opportunities. • Leveraging the assets of Middlebury College for local economic impact. Additionally, given the special sense of place and the amount of human/ intellectual infrastructure our community has, we are influenced by the belief that there are costs associated with a lack of diversity; by the belief that differentiation drives growth; and by the belief that the combination of quality, sustainability and a global/ international perspective is an incredible established foundation on which we can grow. Some of the work can also be framed as a focus on infrastructure - facilities and systems that will enable future growth. We are currently

engaged in building transportation, intellectual, telecommunications and agricultural infrastructure here in Middlebury via projects like: • a fiber-to-the-premise telecommunications network for greater Middlebury • a round-a-bout at the intersection of Exchange St. and Rt. 7 • the EDI project behind Ilsley Library • a slaughterhouse and biogas facility • a research corporation at Middlebury College to enable the commercialization of innovations with commercial potential “Our logo, ‘Middlebury NEXT: Growing Innovation. Living Vermont,’” communicates the ideas around proactive future building — the idea that we’re thinking of what our community is going to be in five to 10 years. It’s us, as a town, being progressive. Thinking ahead. Asking what is next? As a town, we compete with communities all over the country. We have a great story to sell, but we have to market those qualities to have any hope of attracting and/or growing new businesses here. It takes a lot of spadework, but I’m confident our work is putting Middlebury on the map as a great place to live, work and play.” — Jamie Gaucher
