Tiger girls seek step forward By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — During the 2013 regular season, Coach Wendy Leeds’ Middlebury Union girls’ soccer squad made a habit of playing tough, one-goal games — and losing them, winning just twice. Until the ly were rewarded for their improved play with two more wins and trip to a “If you look at the potential for learning from a loss, we did a lot of learning in the regular season, Leeds said during the 2014 preseason. “I think it was similar to how other seasons have been, where the won-loss record was not necessarily indicative in terms of how competitive we were. For sure, several athletes who contributed a year ago graduated, but the Tigers were a deep team, and Leeds said a number of promising younger players have joined the many returners, most of whom are on the offen“Obviously, we are looking to be a little more competitive, and I feel like we have some more scoring power now that is a little bit deeper. In the preseason, Leeds was looking to junior Claire Armstrong to step in at sweeper and either freshman Jessie Hounchell or sophomore Lauren Turner to take over at stopper. Three players with

will help, Leeds said. “If you have three or four players who know how to feed those scorers, that’s really what you want. Also back is junior goalie Molly Campbell, a starter a year ago until a late-season injury, and sophomore

back, seniors Marvie Avery and Jesse Wulfman and junior Annina Hare. Leeds believes the group will gel. ure each other out still, she said. “They’re great athletes. They just need to work as a unit a little better.

Leeds also plans to deploy four anchoring things in the middle, with Lane and juniors Julia Vorsteveld and Hannah Buttolph will sub in there. Up front, two pairs will rotate in: junior Faith Isham and freshman Andi Boe and junior Hannah Lawrence and sophomore Payton Buxton. Lane could also run at forward, Leeds said. -

Leeds acknowledges that teams like Milton and Mill River will be among the favorites this fall, but wants the Tigers to aim high. “One of our goals this season is to go to the ’ship, and we’ve been close a couple times, she said. “What happens in regular season is important, but it comes down to four games at the end. In Division II it’s a reasonable expectation that we could make a run for it.

By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — This past fall, the Middlebury Union boys’ soccer team followed its outstanding 2012 season with a 1-10-1 season after graduating almost all of its starters. Coach Bret Weekes can fairly point out that record was a bit misleading, as almost all of the losses came by either one or two goals — his Tigers were competitive. Weekes expects to improve on that record, despite losing three starters who had a year of eligibility remaining but chose instead to devote their time to club team play. “We have a young team, Weekes said. “But some of our players have experience from last year and those skills are translating into some nice chemistry. I like our chemistry a lot this year. It helps that one starter who returns is junior goalie Wilder Perera. “We have our keeper back from last year with a year of experience and more growth and development, Weekes said. Perera will help keep a rebuilt defense on an even keel, Weekes said. “We have spent all preseason, really, fundamentally on defense. We came back basically empty in the back, he said. Weekes will look to tall junior Nick Holmes to anchor the center of the back line, with junior Jonathan niors Bob Avery and Luke Benz and sophomore Nick Wilkerson will all see time at outside back, and senior Jacob Lawson and junior Gregory Cole

could also work their way into the defensive rotation. Wilkerson will also back up Perera, Weekes said. junior Burke Weekes will help quarterback the offense as the offensive while sophomores Duncan McCabe Max Mayone and Joseph Vanacore will work their way into the mix. Juniors Drew Barnicle and Brenden Peterson will run up front, and Coach Weekes expects them and Burke tive scorers. “I think we’re going to see some very dangerous opportunities resulting from combinations of those four, he said. Coach Weekes also noted the many juniors ready to contribute this fall. “I like the junior class player development. I really like how some of these kids have worked on their game in the offseason, he said. With what Weekes called “a commitment to team play and some “technical talent as well as chemistry, the coach said he felt good overall about the Tigers’ prospects. “I feel anything can happen. That’s how high school soccer is, he said. “I don’t expect to see us in the ranking echelons. But I do expect to see us competitive, and I look forward to better results this year than we had last year.

MUHS football team hoping to repeat as D-I champs By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — The fall of 2013 could not have gone better for the Middlebury Union football team — an undefeated season in which the Tigers were rarely challenged and I title in more than a decade. Even with many of the key players who earned that championship back in the fold, Coach Dennis Smith said this year’s team does not plan to take anything for granted. “The kids, just because we won last year, they didn’t say that’s it. We had 20 kids in the weight room all summer long. They came into preseason in really good shape,” Smith said. Certainly, Smith knows the Tigers remember 2013, but his message to them was to focus on making 2014 memories. “I’ve just stressed to them, now you’ve got to make your own story.

They’ve got a good chance of having a good season themselves,” he said. In the run-up to the Tigers’ opener, at an Essex team also believed to be a playoff contender, Smith said the Tigers had enjoyed a solid preseason, in part because of the 17 seniors on the roster and in part because many new starters saw plenty of action in 2013 after the Tigers had opened leads. “We’re a little ahead of where we were last year offensively and defensively,” Smith said. “My kids that are back this year playing, even if they weren’t starters last year, just have a great grasp of what we were doing last year. They already knew what was coming at them and were able to pick things up quicker, so we were able to put things in at a quicker pace.” Many of those seniors will man the skill positions: quarterback Austin Robinson, running backs Bobby

Ritter and Cullen Hathaway, fullback Justin Stone, tight ends Sam Holmes and Ian Gill, and split ends Connor Quinn and Joe Hounchell. The offensive line saw the most turnover on the team, although Smith said he does not expect a drop-off in performance. Only senior left tackle Lucas Plouffe returns. Senior James Ploof takes over at right tackle, senior Calvin Desforges and junior Bruce Wright are the guards, and junior Wyatt Laberge will snap the ball to Robinson. Smith said the Tigers will, of course, often line up with three backs and use option plays, but he will take “It’s what is the defense giving us. What can we do that day? If we’ve got to throw, we can throw it a little bit. If we’ve got to run it, we’ll run it,” he said. “I’m not going to sit there and beat my head against the wall and say we run option and only

option. If that’s not working, we’ll throw it in there, but we won’t do it all day long. I feel we’re multidimensional. We’ve got athletes all

Smith said. “Secondary-wise I’ve got three guys who played quite a bit last year.” Of course, the Tigers are aiming

On defense, many starters return on the line. Ploof and Plouffe will rotate at one defensive tackle spot, with senior Sam Killorin the other tackle. Stone returns as one end, and Holmes takes over as the other. Junior Nick Beauchamp is the new nose tackle. Two new linebackers move into the lineup, seniors Nathan Lalonde and Matt Dunton. Three starters in the secondary return, Ritter at cornerback and Quinn at safety, while Robinson will move from safety to cornerback. Junior Ali Abdul-Sater is the newcomer at the other safety slot. “Defensively, I think we are just as strong as we were last year. I think we’re tougher on the defensive line,”

said, they will take care of business one game at a time. “We’re just excited week-toweek,” Smith said. “Goal number one is to get to the playoffs, and then it’s just a three-game season.”

Mt. Abe-Vergennes football aims for postseason again By ANDY KIRKALDY BRISTOL — Eagle football coach Ernie Senecal was already optimistic about his Mount Abraham/Vergennes cooperative squad, the No. 4 seed in Division III in 2013, even before the Eagles rallied for a dramatic, 26-22 victory at U-32 in its opener on Aug. 29. “We feel pretty good about ourselves,” Senecal said. “We really do think we can put together a real strong season again this year.” For one thing, a running game featuring a rotation of junior fullback Ryan Paquin, junior halfback Anthony Warner and sophomore Wyatt Gracie, who will line up in

either spot, averaged six yards a rush in East Montpelier. “We’re going to be able to run the football against most teams,” Senecal said. Senior quarterback Joey Payea did not complete a pass in the opener after missing a week of preseason, but Senecal believes the team can develop an air attack. “If we can complete even four our run, it will help us for sure,” he said. When Payea throws it will often be to junior split ends Jeb Hodsden and Anthony Robideau or to senior tight ends Tyrus Keith and Bran-

Senecal was happy with the offensive line in the opener. Senior Derek Whitcomb is the center, senior Ty Combs and junior Bradley Sturtevant are the guards, and senior Erik Eisenhower and junior Jack Eisenhower are the tackles. Also sure to see time on the line are juniors Broc Clark and Ross Norton and sophomore Josh Roscoe. On the other side of the ball, the Eagles are switching predomitwo linebackers, two cornerbacks and two safeties. Junior Matt Mullin will be the nose guard, with Combs, Sturtevant and Jack Eisen-

Numbers, chemistry boost Eagle runners By ANDY KIRKALDY BRISTOL — With decent numbers again and scoring runners returning on both the boys’ and girls’ sides, Mount Abe cross-country coaches Brent Crum and Vicki Bronson were looking forward to this fall during preseason. “We do have a little depth on the boys’ side, which is really nice,” Crum said. “This will be the second year, possibly the third year, where we’ve had really good, solid competition for those seven varsity spots, which is very exciting. It makes all of our runners train a little harder and run a little faster.” There probably won’t be competition for the top spot, which senior Chris Carter, whom Crum calls “the

heart of the team,” has held for the past two seasons. Also returning are four other athletes who ran for Mount Abe at last fall’s Division II state meet, in order Norland, junior Lyn Ackert-Smith, senior Nick Turner and sophomore Jude Bunch. Also on the team is senior Cullen Jemison, who scored for Mount Abe at the 2012 state meet. Among those who Crum said will push that group for starting positions are a group of sophomores, Andrew Raymond, Peter Foley, Will Aldrich and Isaiah Kile, and several promising freshmen, notably Aidan May. “It’s the kind of young energy a coach wants on a team. It just creates

a positive attitude about working out and running fast,” Crum said. That attitude will make for an enjoyable season regardless of results, Crum said. “It’s such a great group,” he said. “They just have a great time. They laugh, they play and they work hard. I’m happy to be part of the group. I love going on runs with them.” Bronson told a similar story about the girls’ side of the Eagle team, although the numbers are fewer: Nine girls will probably end up in a healthy competition for the seven varsity starting spots. “We go meet to meet,” Bronson said. “You have to prove yourself each week to make varsity.”

OV football looking to build on strong 2013 By LEE J. KAHRS BRANDON — Otter Valley Football Coach Jim Hill is excited. The fourth-year coach has a veteran senior quarterback, a lot of returning starters, and excellent team chemistry. “This is a really veteran group, including quarterback John Winslow and a veteran offensive line blocking for him,” Hill said. Besides Winslow, who has been named captain along with senior offensive lineman Adam Sherwin, the standout returners include junior running back Carson Leary, who at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, is a talented tank with great speed. He takes over the premier starting back position vacated by Mike Winslow, who graduated last spring.

On the offense, Hill made a point of mentioning sophomore running backs Brent Nickerson and Rexall Bautista as up-and-comers, as well as lineman Jeremy Frazier. Hill has a deep group of 20 regular players and 45 total in the program, healthy numbers for a group that is gaining in size. In addition to Leary, Hill has 12 other players over six feet tall, and 11 players at 200 pounds or more. With the experience of Winslow and his other offensive weapons, Hill said more time is spent in practice on actually playing the game. “We’re way ahead of where we were this time last year,” he said in preseason. “There’s less time spent teaching and more execution. They understand and know what we’re

New Otter girls’ soccer coach inherits youthful squad By LEE J. KAHRS BRANDON — New Otter Valley ding has his work cut out for him this year with a team small in numbers and low on seniors. Nonetheless, the former OV JV girls’ coach, who took over the varsity job after Dave Brown resigned, is really looking forward to coaching his players at this level. “It will be fun to watch them grow,” he said in an interview last week. “We

may not win many games, but it will be fun watching them develop as players.” With a lone senior, goalie Nora ing players out of 19 girls who make up both the varsity and junior varsity teams. The next couple of years will 14 juniors on the squad this season.

The team lost nine seniors to graduation and is in rebuilding mode, but far. “The teamwork and the team cohesiveness is really strong,” he said. “We’re also playing the ball wide much better.” Where he admits the team needs work is conditioning, especially since his bench is not that deep. I expect nothing but positive things.”

Field hockey has skill, heart — not numbers By LEE J. KAHRS hockey coach Stacey Edmunds-Brickell is on a mission. With an impressive coaching seasons, the now third-year coach has all the faith in the world that this year’s team can go the distance. But with just 12 players, they’ll have their work cut out for them. Last year, the Otters lost a shocker -

championship. It’s a tough division, marked with strong programs including Mount Abe, last year’s championship team, ing, and Rice. But Edmunds-Brickell said even though she lost six strong senior players to graduation, she has a really talented team that she believes can bring home a championship. But conditioning and attitude will be key, she said. “This team has skill,” she said. “The problem is I don’t have the depth in numbers. I have great depth in experience and versatility, but with injury or illness, it takes its toll and that’s where we’ll get into trouble.” The team chose seniors Laura Roberts and Marissa Coburn and junior Maia Edmunds as the team captains.

The coach will also use some junior sary, being careful not to affect their JV playing time as well. And OV is not alone. Edmunds said she is hearing of a shortage of coaches all over Vermont. “This is not unusual,” she said. “I hear it from other coaches. It goes in waves, and right now, the numbers are down across the state.” That said, Edmunds-Brickell is committed to having one of the bestconditioned teams in the Green Mountain State, as most girls will have to play entire games, buzzer to buzzer. And even though the girls may moan about running in practice, they are starting to see the results. The Otters were 1-1 as of Sept. 5 with a win over

“We want to be stronger, faster and better than in years before, but we know being short in numbers is a challenge,” the coach said. “After our the girls thanked me for making them run. It pays off. Not to dim the focus on stick skills, but conditioning is a necessary component of the game.” And despite the tough division and the low numbers, Edmunds-Brickell is certain this team can go back to the playoffs this year, if they want to badly enough. “I don’t have a doubt that they

have the ability and the heart,” she said. “If they just keep their focus and their energy and their commitment, that’s what will move this team forward. They need to be there for each other, and be their sister’s keeper. That’s what this season is about.”
