Sorting is easy

Blue: paper, cardboard, newspapers, magazines, packaging, telephone books, catalogues, cards, posters, loose pages… Did you know?... You may NOT include aluminium, photographs, stickers or domestic paper waste such as nappies, toilet paper or spiral notebooks. You may not leave boxes or paper outside the containers, please tear or fold them to place them inside. The lorry that is assigned to empty the containers cannot pick up waste that is on the street. Advice: Don’t waste paper, use and reuse as much as possible, writing or printing on both sides, use fabric kitchen wipes instead of kitchen paper to clean surfaces, buy products with minimum packaging. If you are bringing your paper products to be recycled in a plastic bag, don’t throw that bag into the BLUE container, make sure it goes into the YELLOW container alongside.

Did you know?… You may NOT include light bulbs, mirrors, windscreens, glass from windows, ceramic shards nor florescent items (which are very toxic). Advice: Use your own glass or cup in work rather than disposable ones, and try and do the same at parties. If you are bringing your glass to be recycled in a plastic bag, don’t throw that bag into the GREEN container, make sure it goes into the YELLOW container alongside. You may not leave bottles or boxes of bottles alongside the container on the street. No toys, pens, cds, electronic apparatus, greenhouse covers, rubber, barrels, containers made of dangerous residual materials (paints, mineral oils, varnishes, dissolvents…) Advice: avoid buying products with too much packaging when possible, take your own shopping bags with you, use disposable cups and plates as little as possible. Compress or squeeze empty plastic bottles (press down and close well to save space) to reduce the number of journeys to the recycling bins, and if you can’t squeeze them place them in the container without the lids. Cleanliness and rubbish Treat the street as an extension of your home. Don’t throw rubbish on the ground, and in general behave as you would in your house. This way everybody benefits, not to mention the fact that you are avoiding an infringement of the by-laws and possible fines.

Use the rubbish bins on the street properly, they are not an appropriate place for depositing your bags of household rubbish, which should be left in the allocated container for your home or building.

CHEWING GUM: wrap the gum to be discarded in the wrapping or paper until you find an appropriate bin to throw it in. WANTED LOVE, CARE, AFFECTION, DEDICATION, PROTECTION

ANIMAL FRIENDLY, SUPPORTIVE AND SOCIABLE, KNOWN FOR YOUR MODEL BEHAVIOUR WITH PETS

REWARD: A HEALTHY TOWN

WANTED Model Citizen Before you get a pet... You should know that while bringing a pet into your home can bring you so much joy, love and fun, it is also a responsibility and you must also take note of the costs, including vaccinations, a microchip, food and care when your pet may be ill, making arrangements when you travel, etc. You might want to investigate the available insurance schemes for pets, and your vet will be able to give you more information about all of the above.

WANTED

LOVE, CARE, AFFECTION, DEDICATION, PROTECTION

Economic costs are not the only criteria when deciding the pros and cons of bringing a pet home either. You need to understand that a pet will need your time and attention too. Dogs, for instance, are social animals, they don’t like being alone for long periods of time, and in fact frequently leaving them in the house alone for too long can lead to behavioural problems which could include loud barking which would disturb neighbours. A dog also needs to be walked regularly regardless of race or size. Three walks of a minimum of 20 minutes daily is the recommendation. So take these time considerations into account.

What is the pet for me? If you have decided that you do want to enjoy all the benefits that having a pet will bring, you should choose an animal that best suits your character and your family. So, for instance, if the home where the pet is going to live is not a highly active one, pick a quieter pet. We would recommend that you consider adopting one of the many lovely pets that have been unfortunately abandoned by their previous owners. One of the advantages to choosing one of these animals is that often they have already been house trained and will be loyal and loving with their new family.

WANTED

LOVE, CARE, AFFECTION, DEDICATION, PROTECTION

How do I adopt? In Adeje you can adopt an animal from the Centro de Acogida de Animales del Ayuntamiento (Council’s animal refuge). This is located opposite the Punto Limpio just before the La Atalaya roundabout coming from Armeùime. You may visit the centre and choose your new pet accompanied by someone from the centre. When you have decided which animal you wish to adopt you will have to fill out some paperwork and then return to the centre with your own vet to ensure the animal is chipped and has received the rabies vaccination before you leave with them.

Now that I have my pet I adore him! It goes almost without saying that having a pet can bring joy and unconditional love into your life and your home. Your pet will adore you and vice versa. So, to ensure that your life together is easy, make sure you register your pet on the Adeje census, or the census of the council area in which you live. This costs nothing (except in the case of dogs classed as potentially dangerous) and is part of the regular by-law procedure.

WANTED

LOVE, CARE, AFFECTION, DEDICATION, PROTECTION

Registering on the town census To register your pet in Adeje you need to go to the upper floor of the ‘Edificio de Usos Múltiples’, the modern building just beside the Adeje Health Centre and town Post Office, tel 922 711 484. The full postal address is Departamento de SANIDAD. C/ Tinerfe el Grande, 32. 38670 . Adeje Registration is free and you must bring your own DNI or residency certificate, the pet’s identity documents and vaccination book (which you will have received from the vet). The whole procedure is quick and easy.

Microchip As a pet owner you have an obligation to microchip your pet if she or he is three months old or more. Any registered vet will be able to carry out the procedure. The microchip contains information about your pet including the name and contact details of the owner which can be used if the animal is lost or abandoned, for ease of identification. The Adeje Local Police and the refuge have microchip readers which can identify the animals in collaboration with any registered vet in the borough who has access to the data base.

WANTED

LOVE, CARE, AFFECTION, DEDICATION, PROTECTION

Health Your love for your pet must also include making sure that he or she receives all the veterinary attention necessary depending on the animal’s age and breed, following the advice of your vet. The rabies vaccination is obligatory for dogs of three months or older and must be given annually. You also have a duty to protect your pet from other viral illnesses and parasites such as heartworm and Parvovirus CPV2 (also known as parvo). The ideal age for sterilisation is, for puppies and kittens, about 3 -4 weeks after they have completed their first round of vaccinations, or in general from 4 months of age. Female pets do not have to have completed their first heat before the operation. In fact, if a female pet is spayed before her first heat you reduce dramatically the chance of breast cancer. So the operation can help avoid health problems and of course unwanted pregnancies.

WANTED

LOVE, CARE, AFFECTION, DEDICATION, PROTECTION

Socialisation As an owner you have a duty to make sure your pet is clean and has the opportunity to be as active as their type/breed indicates. Take your pet for walks, play with him/her, have fun – both you and your pet will benefit. Do remember, if you are taking a pet for a walk in public they must be wearing a collar and be on a lead. Your pet will be happy when you give her/him time and attention and this should translate into a well behaved pet too. Teach your dog not to bark and annoy the neighbours. Give your pet the attention they deserve, walks, family time and a good positive education with rewards, appropriate games, and you should go a long way towards avoiding behavioural problems for the good of the pet, and the ongoing relationship your pet has with your family and your neighbourhood. If you have a dog which appears on the list of potentially dangerous dogs you must also comply with all the rules and regulations covering ownership and control of the dog. You must be in possession of the proper licence, the dog must be registered on the council census and when out on the street must always be wearing a collar and muzzle and be on a lead. Remember the civil and legal responsibility for the behaviour of your dog is yours.

WANTED

LOVE, CARE, AFFECTION, DEDICATION, PROTECTION

Social Harmony Finally, love and care for your pet should also include working to ensure that they are accepted by your neighbours, so make sure to always pick up after your animal on the streets and in parks and gardens. It is both a question of hygiene and a matter of promoting social harmony and coexistence with your neighbours, not to mention that there are sanctions for not complying with by laws regarding nuisance pets and pet waste.

The benefits of having a pet All animals deserve our respect, whether they are our pets or are rescue animals, those working with the security forces, etc. It has been proven that the simple act of getting close to an animal has a positive affect on people, reduces stress and contributes to a general increase in well being, physical as well as psychological. Pets are also an important part of a child’s education, teaching them about loyalty, friendship, respect, etc. Your pet loves you and you should show them your affection by properly caring for them.
