WHY COMMISSION ME . . . ?

I pride myself in capturing and uniquely stylising precious images of your pregnancy, the little miracle that you created and all the milestones throughout life that are meaningful to you. Truly, these moments fly by so quickly and your memory of them should be captured professionally. From time to time, I see posts on Facebook and forums from families asking “Can anyone recommend a cheap photographer?”, “Why do they charge so much?” or “I can get 100 images on a disc for way less than that.” Like any quality products or services out there, good photography is expensive because it is not easy to create. Bad photography is even more expensive. If you do not like your photos, you have wasted your time, money and memories and if there is a second chance, some families will end up investing more money for a better photographer due to dissatisfaction from their first experience. When you commission a professional photographer, you are paying for their expertise, the utmost importance they hold with regards to the safety of your family and newborn baby during sessions, their talent, time and also the fact that they will capture your images perfectly, the first time.

Newborn Safety : During newborn sessions, you are entrusting your photographer to hold, soothe, and pose your brand new baby often in and on props. You need to trust that this person knows what they are doing, just as you would with any professional. As a mother to 4 children and a newborn photographer, I have years of experience in soothing, calming and posing babies, all skills necessary for a successful session. Your baby’s safety and comfort has to be a priority to a photographer. Many of the poses and images you see of babies in hanging nests, swings or the popular “head in hands” pose you see in my galleries are composite images. I have supported the baby the entire time and taken a series of shots to later on edit together to create the illusion that the baby is on these props or in these poses without that support. A worrying fact is that many inexperienced photographers do not take the same care and have not researched the safe way to take images like these and attempt them regardless of this just to get the shot. What is more important? Price or safety?

Education & Hands on Experience : I have and will continue to invest thousands of dollars to attend workshops with award winning photographers that specialise in the art of newborn photography. I have learnt from a few of the best newborn photographers worldwide but have also held around 200 sessions over the last 2 years working professionally in this field. I make a committment to every client that I will produce the best possible photographs for them that I can and am always striving for perfection in my art. Perfection and quality is worth more to me than quantity. Safety and client confidence in me is just as important. What also differentiates an amateur photographer from a professional is consistency. Ensure that the work you view is consistently great. You do get what you pay for. Do you really want 50-100 images with only 2-3 decent ones in the set or 10-25 brilliant images worth of printing for your walls? What will you do with a disc of 50-100 images? In another 8 weeks, your baby will be smiling and be changing already. By 7+ months you may want images of your baby sitting up. The important thing is the quality not the quantity. Newborn sessions seldom bring 50-100 unique images. Each image you see in my galleries has taken me time to create, photograph and professionally edit.

Equipment and Props : I work with over $35,000 worth of professional grade equipment (cameras, lenses, studio lighting, computers and the latest editing software). Although professional cameras are reasonably accessible to consumers, what matters most is the skill it takes to manually and creatively use that equipment. I have a collection of over $20,000 worth of quality props such as quality blankets, fabrics, bonnets, headbands, nests, buckets, flooring and backdrops to ensure a wide variety of beautiful set-ups that are unique to each clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s session. Many of my images include fresh flowers, and disposable items that can be used just once.

Time : Besides the time working at the session, there is an additional minimum of 10+ hours of behind-the-scenes work that the client does not see and here is a general breakdown of my time per newborn session : 2-3 hours Setting up the studio, preparing props, driving to the flower market for fresh flowers, planning workflow and shots 3-5 hours Session time (depends on how settled each baby is / how cooperative siblings may be) 8-15 hours Upload images from the session. Select and edit photos (color correction, toning and retouching). If your gallery includes technically difficult shots (baby hanging from a tree branch or prop, posing sitting up, etc), then extra Photoshop steps are needed. 2-4 hours Set up the online gallery. Process retouching requests and email back and forth to clients with selections. 1-2 hours Collecting and checking quality of prints, packaging and posting. 1-2 hours Washing, cleaning and sanitising my props and space for the next session.

Time spent for me to provide a photography package can range from 17 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 30 + hours. Because professional photography is time and labour intensive, I only accept limited bookings per month to ensure I have enough quality time to plan for and create each clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s session and resulting images, and accommodate the fact that babies are frequently earlier and later than due dates.

While all of my packages include digital files, I can also arrange professionally printed products. I can recommend products to suit your needs that are of the highest quality and with the longest guarantees and organise them for you to be delivered to your door. Printing products through budget companies will mean that your prints will not match that of a professional printing lab and potentially will not last for long. I regularly calibrate My Mac monitor with professional labs to ensure my printing with them is to professional standards. Your prints will not represent my work unless professional printing is arranged. Inks and papers sometimes only last for a few years due to the chemicals found in cheaper inks and materials at budget printing places.

You’ve invested so much into your photography session so consider what you will do with your USB. Don’t just put it in a drawer for another day. Arrange for your precious memories to be printed so you can enjoy them now :)

FAQ’s: When to book a newborn session? It is never too early to book your newborn photo session so please book while you are still expecting to guarantee a session. Because I also offer other types of photography sessions, I have bookings sometimes up to 1 year in advance. I take on a limited number of newborn photo sessions per week to allow for the fact that some babies arrive early and some arrive late. If you know your due date and you like my style of photography, book it in as early as possible.

When to book a maternity session? This is up to the individual, however I recommend between 30-36 weeks for maternity sessions

What to wear to a maternity session? A floaty dress in a solid colour, chiffon, or other floaty fabric works brilliantly. Otherwise, wear what makes you feel great! Try to avoid bold patterns and distracting logos. I have a few (One Size Fits All) custom made maternity dresses available if required. Please feel free to contact me for a consultation on what to wear if required

Why is it best to photograph newborns under 12 days of age? Worldwide, newborn photo sessions are recommended for babies under 12 days of age with the optimum time being 4-10 days. This is because babies are sleepiest, and easiest to settle during this time. Photo sessions held after 12 days frequently run for an hour or so longer as babies are harder to settle and more wakeful/aware of Mum’s absence etc. so please be prepared for this. Also, babies like to curl up beautifully before 12 days so many of the images in baskets or on posing backdrops work best during this time. The “head in hands” or “froggy” pose composite images are almost always of babies under 12 days of age. Babies need to be very relaxed and in a deep sleep to achieve this pose which involves adult support and compositing 2 images in Photoshop post production

Time to complete the work: My current time as at April 2015 is around 3 weeks from the session date to finish editing and provide an online gallery for you to view. Once the secure gallery is online via this website, you may choose your images for your USB. The gallery will remain visible for 2 days. I may release files at my discretion earlier if the balance of the work is complete and so long as it is understood that those files are part of the final selection. If I have not had any communication from a client after I have edited the work, provided an online gallery and have emailed/communicated that it is ready, I will remove the gallery after 2 days and charge $30 to re upload it.

What to Wear and Bring? For all of my sessions, I recommend clothing that is neutral, without logos or heavy patterns. I provide all that is necessary for newborn baby sessions, so unless you have a special item you would like in your images, you do not need to provide anything. Sometimes people like to bring a special toy/blanket or prop and that is ok. During each session I run heating (sometimes both ducted reverse cycle and a portable heater). It may be hot for us as adults but I regulate the temperature to keep baby happy. Please dress accordingly.

Payment Payment is due by the day of the photography session unless otherwise agreed in writing prior to the session

Payment in installments: I am happy to accept smaller payments in the lead up to your photographic work being finalised. I will not release work until payment is completed.

Safety and Hygeine: Your baby’s safety is paramount to me. Some of my images are composites in Photoshop (for example all “head in hands” poses are composites) which means that the baby has been supported entirely and the supporting parent’s arm or hand is erased in Photoshop when editing. When choosing your newborn photographer, make sure your photographer puts your baby’s safety first and does not compromise on this in order to get a tricky shot. I will never place your baby in an unsafe or uncomfortable pose. I always ask that a parent or assistant is beside the baby on each surface. I have the experience with newborn babies and to composite images in Photoshop where a particular shot is required. After each session, I wash fabrics and props used. Safety and hygiene are paramount to me

Can I purchase all of the images taken? I do not sell or provide RAW files or unedited images as part of my services. One of the reason clients love my work is due to my photographic skill, artistic vision, use of fabrics and textures and editing style. I spend between 5-6 hours editing each session which includes meticulous attention to detail so as not to over edit (correcting skin tones/colours and enhancing lighting). During this time I also convert RAW digital files to high resolution, printable formats and decipher the image file size and document size. Editing enhances and finalises each photograph as a piece of art. Inlcuded in this time is the transfer of files to a USB in both high and low resolution as well as designing your birth announcement digital file (for newborn packages). No images displayed on either my website or Facebook page are unedited.

Where to Print: All of my printed products are printed on the highest quality of professional paper at a professional printing lab. The computer and software I edit with is calibrated to print exactly as it should at this lab. Taking your USB to other printing companies may not produce the work as it should be printed. I will consult with clients on this after the session and advise where to take your USB for prints/canvases or books etc.

Why do photographers charge what they charge? Professional newborn photographers are trained in safe practices and the handling of new babies which is an additional skill in itself. Make this a primary consideration before deciding on your newborn photographer. If you admire the style of imagery you see by a particular photographer, pricing should not be the primary consideration to book your session. There are many overhead costs associated with running a photographic business including the high cost of advertising, purchasing and maintaining professional camera equipment and computer software for editing, props and materials, insurances, running of a vehicle to locations and photographic companies, the time it takes to photograph, edit and organise delivery of finished work, training/workshops that is ongoing and always evolving with the art of photography not to mention the time it takes to clean a studio/home studio and props used after each session. There are also additional costs for utilities ie running heating during baby sessions etc. Anyone can take a photo but it takes a professional photographer to create a piece of art so consider the skill, style and expertise of the photograph
