Welcome to Adelaide Wind Orchestra’s 2016 Season.

It is a period of transition for our organisation as we say goodbye to our Conductor and Artistic Director from day one, Peter Handsworth. Under Peter’s leadership, we have established ourselves as one of the foremost ensembles of our type in Australia and this legacy is one that we aim to build on, going forward. 2016 spans the whole spectrum of repertoire available to the modern wind ensemble, from the first true masterwork for small wind ensemble G R A N PA RT I TA to the World, Australian, and Adelaide Premieres of a number of works written in the last five years. The year begins with the epic showmanship of DAV I D P O L A I N , returning for AWO P L AYS J O H N W I L LI A M S! , who we are delighted to invite back once again. B RYA N G R I F FI T H S joins us for a concert of entirely AU S T R A LI A N S TO R I E S by Australians, and we present a program of magical FA B L E S in musical form to delight everybody’s inner child. Since Percy Grainger, there has not been a great deal of love for the wind ensemble outside of the military band setting in Australia until now. One such example of that upsurge in activity is the establishment of world-renowned wind ensemble conductor, D R J O H N LY N C H in the Sydney Conservatorium of Music – who has quickly moved to commission and champion new Australian works whilst training a new generation of wind conductors. We are delighted to have him conduct us at the tail-end of our 2016 season in a concert that really embodies what our whole season is about – our ambitions for the modern wind ensemble to be taken seriously as a medium for expression in contemporary art music. Time to take back the Knights! O Magnum Mysterium Surprised by Joy

One of the world’s foremost wind conductors, Dr John Lynch, takes Adelaide Wind Orchestra for the first time in a celebration of our fourth year.

Celebrate joyful music inspired by all kinds of spiritualism. Chant, worship, meditation, rituals, and great religious architecture are inspirations for this diverse program taking us from the cinematic textures of STE PH E N M E LILLO to the divine hymnal O Magnum Mysterium. DAVID PO L AIN leads this diverse program that explores spiritual music from a secular perspective as AN D RE W PE N ROS E joins us as soloist on DAVID MA S L AN K A’ S virtuosic Marimba Concerto, a Bach-inspired fantasy and Australian Premiere. DAVID JOHN LANG’S Surprised by Joy closes the program in a celebration of true joy.

From the local inspiration of the First Light at Uluru to the American dream portrayed in A A RO N CO P L A N D ’ S Emblems, this program explores our deepest ambitions and fantasies. Recent Sydney Conservatorium of Music graduate and newly appointed Adelaide Symphony Orchestra Principal Trumpet, OW E N M O R R I S , joins us in performing A L E X A N D E R A R U T I U N I A N ’ S engaging and idiomatic Trumpet Concerto.

Located just east of Gawler Place on the southern side of Flinders Street in the Adelaide CBD, the Flinders Street Baptist Church is home to the Tuesday on Flinders concert series and is wellknown as one of Adelaide’s premier chamber music venues. A heritage listed building opened in 1863, the venue retains its simple dignity and provides the intimacy and warmth which make it highly suitable to small ensemble classical music.
