Hi all, The Christmas Season is upon us ! It is time for holidays, opening presents and maybe making New years resolutions. For those of you who have no idea what to buy your favourite equestrian for Christmas take a look at the super offers available from Equestrian Online and the Western Shoppe on page 4. The Stable Yards and Riding Schools section has plenty of listing of Pony Camps to keep budding equestrians busy during the school holidays and the Whats on section has plenty of unaffiliated shows to keep children and mums busy. The beginning of the festive season saw fellow equestrians working together and help search for horses that were stolen from Okusha Riding Centre owned by Dalene Baksa, in Harrison Flats. They were all found very quickly due to the help and fast reaction from the local equestrian community.
“I would like to thank my local community and everyone who was involved, who stood together and helped me find my stolen horses. Without you my beloved horses many never have been found. Thank you!” ~ Dalene Baksa Lastly and most importantly we would like to thank everyone who has shown their support for the H & H Lifestyle this past year. Putting the magazine together and watching it grow has beena blast, but without our advertisers, contributors and our readers we would not exist, so a big big thank you to everyone!

Q: Who has inspired you most in your career? A: Dr Steve Selway, rodeo cowboy, horse vet and father of Equine arthroscopic surgery – who encouraged me to think sideways. Q: What makes a good vet? A: A lot more EQ, than IQ. Q: What is the most exciting change you have seen in vet practice since becoming a vet? A: Digital Diagnostic Equipment. Q: What has been the highlight of your veterinary career and who has been your most memorable patient? A: With Michael de Kock, Partially owning, racing and helping rehabilitate a horse called Right Approach, who was previously owned by The Queen. Q: What does a typical day look like for you? A: We have 6 practices in 3 countries –thus variety, is indeed, the spice of our lives. Q: What is the most common case you see? A: Hock and feet joint issues in the sports horse and knees in the racing thoroughbred. Q:What challenges and trends do you think will be addressed by the vet profession in the next 10 years? A: Biological, therapeutic modalities. (Healing at the cellular level) Q: What would you have liked to do if you had not become a vet? A: Definitely, a singer songwriter. 6 ladies, 7 Horses, 4 Grooms and a convoy of horse boxes.... By Tiffany-Jane Herron A couple of weeks before closing of entries, KZN decided that a team was needed to be a part of one of the most prestigious competitions in the country, SA Showing Champs and hence a team of talented riders and their beautiful horses embarked on a journey to Mpumalanga to attend Champs.

KZN SHOWING TEAM WINS!! Wednesday morning was filled with plenty of laughs and tears as we all tried to turn out our steeds for the “mane” events that afternoon. There was great excitement amongst the grooms as we all frantically plaited up, sewed on badges, washed socks, and polished coats.
Shannah Mayne and Calista Gelief “wowed” us all with their outstanding performance in the Show Hunters, galloping into 1st place. Last but not least, Lize Campbell and Ride 4 Jesus Blue produced a solid performance in the Working Riding and took top place. Our reserve horse Western Title and rider Courtney Jane Smith had an amazing show individually and we wished that there had been an extra class for her to strut her stuff in!
First up was Tiffany-Jane Herron and the lovely Lezar Light Fandango in the Working Hunters, who jumped a flawless round to win the first class for KZN. Next up was Wonderman with Julia vickers on board for the Show Hack. They produced a lovely safe round putting them into 2nd place. The beautiful dark bay, Cheries Boy, who was the least experienced horse on the team was ably piloted by Darryn McIntosh and behaved admirably in the Show Riding, picking up another 2nd place for the team.
With these outstanding performances, the KZN “last minute little team” took 2017 Inter-provincial Challenge Team Championship! Well done to everyone who took home many individual class placings and achievements. *** 5

CHCU IS
CHANGING LIVES
The Coastal Horse Care Unit is synonymous with the rehabilitation and rehoming of horses in need. Now it’s efforts are also focussing on education and empowerment. In 2016 The Emahhashini Education Centre was established at the CHCU in Cato Ridge. Purpose built with workshops, classrooms and facilities for learners to stay for week long camps. At present three successfull education programmes for rural horse owners have been held.
“Education is the heartbeat of improvement in Equine Welfare” husbandry and wound care.
The establishment of an education training centre at the horse care unit started as a dream of Gillian Olmesdhal, “education is the only way we are going to improve equine welfare issues“. The purpose of the centre is to educate and empower rural horse owners in KZN, which in turn will lead to better equine welfare.
The on-site Emahhashini education centre offers a comprehensive programme. Rural horse owners attend week long courses and stay over in the purpose built dormitories. The owners are chosen from the community by CHCU, “when we are treating a horse we may find that their feet have been fairly well done and we ask who did them as we want to teach him and help him do an even better job”.
Candidates for the education programmes come from deep rural areas and are mostly subsistence farmers. In these areas tractors and cars are often not an option due to running costs and difficult terrain. This is where pack-donkeys, horses and ponies play a key role. They can perform a multitude of tasks, pulling loads of supplies, carrying goods to markets and fetching water and firewood daily. They are used as a mode of transport and to herd cattle. They are highly appreciated in the rural areas as they are vital for creating income and contribute to the survival of many families.
The courses teach a number of skills. Candidates are taught which materials are suitable for making tack, how to sew and put together numnahs and bridles. They learn basic farriery and the correct use of the farriers tools. Tack fitting is covered, they are taught the difference between good and bad tack and how to correctly fit a saddle and bridle. In the future they will be trained in saddle making.
Resources and animal husbandry knowledge in these areas is limited which leads to the horses and donkeys suffering from working injuries, malnutrition and preventable diseases. Harness and tack are made from whatever materials are available. They may be ridden for three hours at a time, herding cattle up a mountain and in winter they lose condition and the riders end up sitting on the spine, resulting in back sores.
The whole programme is aimed at skills development. The qualification they receive on completion of the course will provide them with income generating skills. The long term vision of this programme is for these horse owners to be able to establish small businesses within their communities. This will bring a positive and sustainable impact to the welfare of the equines within their community and financial empowerment of community members.
Economic resources are limited and often there is not enough for the purchase of animal feed and malnutrition results. Veterinary supplies are scarce, to non- existent, hence wounds go untreated or are treated with unsuitable products. The animals are often not vaccinated and dourine is present.
The Coastal Horse Care Unit is committed to the welfare of all horses and donkeys from all disciplines of equine involvement. It is a rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming centre and an education centre with a Rural Outreach programme. Help this organisation realise its vision of improved equine welfare and the education and empowerment of people, DONATE NOW
The CHCU has an in-field and on -site educational programme that addresses these welfare issues. The in-field/ Rural Outreach programme teaches the basics of correct tack fitting, horse

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Firstly flying Pegasus originated in Greek mythology which would mean the truth of his existence has long been lost in the mists of time, however as far reindeer go there is an interesting story regarding their flying abilities.....

In the frozen Nordic wastes that are Santas backyard and crisscrossed with the paths of the annual reindeer migration, grows a mushroom, red capped and white spotted, not unlike the colours of Santas Christmas suit. It pokes it’s shy head through the mossy forest floors and first snowfalls creating a a sense of toadstool fairytales and Christmas magic. Prized by the local Sami people and actively sought out by reindeer, this culinary delicacy has considerable hallucinogenic strength, a kind of uber mushroom that is said to heighten the senses and produce visions of flying. Reindeer go mad for them, greedily digging through the snow and consuming entire patches! The mushroom then sets to work, not only producing visions but also acting upon the muscular system, giving the reindeer super strength . A small effort can produce a spectacular result, and reindeer can be witnessed taking astonishing leaps into the air. Perhaps one night a hapless soul who had partaken of this fickle shroom came across a herd of intoxicated and leaping beasts and hence the vision of a team of reindeer tiptoeing up the moonbeams and flying into the clear arctic night sky ?
One thing we do know about Christmas is that Mistletoe can usually bring a kiss, I recommend carrying a sprig in your pocket for emergencies.... Merry Christmas darlings,

Funda Nenja
was started in 2009 and roughly translates from isiZulu as “learning with the dog”. This sums up what an enthusiastic group of people are doing in the Mpophomeni township near Howick. Every Friday afternoon, a group of volunteers and over 100 children and their dogs gather to share interspecies and multi-cultural communication within the framework of structured dogtraining classes using positive reinforcement methods. The idea is to develop respect and compassion for all living things by using dog training as a vehicle. Education on animal welfare, the need for sterilisation, humane handling of animals, as well as kind, gentle dog training methods are included in the weekly classes. The dog handlers learn self-discipline, commitment and responsibility which encourages personal growth and self-worth. Every dog that takes part in the program is fitted with a collar and lead, and each handler is given training treats, both for the afternoon lessons as well as for training at home during the forthcoming week. Basic veterinary care including deworming, tick and flea control and treatment of minor wounds is given to the dogs in the program. Sterilisation of the dogs is encouraged and facilitated with the assistance of Umgeni SPCA. All dogs in the program are vaccinated against rabies and regular rabies clinics are organised in the area for all the dogs of Mpophomeni, with the help of the state veterinarian. All our volunteers are also vaccinated against rabies as handling dogs in any rural area is always a risk. The dog handlers learn self-discipline, commitment and responsibility which encourages personal growth and self-worth. Funda Nenja provides the services of a Social Worker to focus on the wellbeing of the children and assists with accessing vital documents for social grants. Counseling and other psycho-social assistance is provided when necessary, together with cognitive and medical referrals. As Funda Nenja relies entirely on donations to run our organisation, we are always needing new or second-hand collars, leads, blankets, beds, bowls, and dog food. We currently use approximately 70 – 80 kg of dog food a week. Please support our organisation. Cash deposits can be made into the following account: Funda Nenja FNB - Howick, Branch: 220 725 Acc. I could advise you to how to deal with pets over this period, with guests arriving, food everywhere, lots of new smells and noises…..…..but honestly, all the dos and don’ts over the festive season can leave you quite overwhelmed! Be safe – Decorate safely. If you have young pets – keep them away from the tree! Don’t give your pets strange foods – stick to their normal diet and NO COOKED BONES!!! Watch for over excitement which may cause squabbles and don’t let children play unattended with dogs. EVER. Do have fun – and enjoy spending time with your dog. Play family games. Bond. Provide cool water when its’ hot and access to shade and even a pool or a pond. Be aware that guests may leave gates open or drive too fast after too many eggnogs! You don’t want to spend Christmas day at the emergency vet. Be logical – don’t do new scary things – Remember crackers can be noisy and wrapping paper and new toys can be scary. Give your pets safe spaces to retreat when it’s too much and try to include them when it’s safe to do so.
