The choreographer’s initial request was for “Light to emanate from the dancers’ hands.” After some research we settled on a model where the dancers were wearing gloves with embeded LEDs. I designed and built fifteen pairs of gloves for the dancers, and enough for several spares. The high color temperature of the gloves served to highlight the dancers while I molded bodies and stage with warm, low saturate colors.

Lighting Design The Choreographer conceived of a piece in which a woman explores a dreamscape comprised of moments with her mother. The deterioration and evolution of their relationship is showcased in five sections that roughly correlate to periods in life. He asked me to create lighting which allowed the moments to be “like experiences that happen in different rooms of a long hallway,” “to be isolated from one another, and drift off into nothingness,” as well as “to let [the dancers] float.” During one section he asked only to see the legs of the dancers surrounding the main character. We accomplished this by suspending a pendant lamp from the lighting grid of the theatre and using only its light for a time.

Dead Sea

KALEIDOSCOPE

Sinkholes pock-mark the emerging shoreline of the Dead Sea near Ein Gedi. The sinkholes are caused by fresh groundwater disolving subterranean salt deposits that once formed the bottom of the Dead Sea. With the underlying salt layer gone, the overlying dry muds cave in and create ponds of differing colors. These cave-ins are the result of the dropping Dead Sea water line (currently one meter per year) which in turn lowers the level of the fresh water table. My task for this concert was to design eight pieces for an evening of dance. Each piece was by a different choreographer - either a faculty member at UB or a guest choreographer. Two students chorepgraphed a duet as well. Knowing that these would be very different pieces my assistant and I established that we would try to design the pieces such that each piece could follow the previous one inuitively. We didn’t want the audience feeling jarred by stark contrasts between pieces that could be avoided, we wanted the night to feel like a whole, and not eight disparate parts. In the end, I beleive that we acheived a cohesive evening of striking movement art.

“Little Foxes” was a project mainly about finding props and furniture. The show was performaned in the round, and consequently had no built elements. We decided on a world of wealth but taste inspired by the Hubbards’s parents instead of Ben and Regina’s more opulent tastes. I decided on a painted floor and we placed a wooden compass inlay in the center to communicate Regina’s worldy aspirations and her arrogance.

Orphans is a play about lonely, and angry boys with grave emotional wounds who begin the healing process by the end. The director demanded Naturalism from the actors and the set, consequently the set needed to be able to take a beating while also remaing inexpensive due to a limited budget. I was able to take advantage of the structure of the theatre itself to strengthen a set built to evoke a NorthernPhiladephia rowhouse.

Cabaret is about a group of people who are blind to the horrors of coming Nazi rule and their counterparts who are not. The show is fraught with wild imagery and foreshadowing of the dark years to come. As I designer I was drawn toward images of dilapidation and decay. The director was inspired by the 1998 Studio 54 Revival and so we met in the middle. I provided a bridge, and painted everything to the effect of decay.

The KCT is frequently used for classes, rehersals, and performance and is scheduled nearly every moment from 9am to midnigth. It is exceedingly difficult to maintain the equipment in the space; the task of restoring equipment to repertory positions would have been daunting in the past. The goal of this project was to create a draft for designers to use when working in the space, and then to create a rep light plot that was simple and easy to use. I took nearly 50 hours of survey time measuring out the space and drafting it. I spent another 40 hours testing circuits and creating a map of them, then doing photometrics and designing a plot that could be refocused to allow for quick use of the space.

14 The Drama Theatre and the Black Box Theatre (see previous page) are the primary performance spaces for UB Department of Theater and Dance. For years, several different student created Vectorworks files have been floating around the department, all of which contained different inaccuracies that were compounded each time a file changed hands. The Chair and Director of Design and Technology hired me after I graduated to create accurate files of each theatre in Vectorworks. The files are not currently 3D, as they asked for only 2-dimensional drawings, but they are accurate to 1/8 (plenty of leeway in theatre). I spent a week in each space and ultimately created about 25 plates per room, in multiple scales as a tool for students to use to focus on design, instead of site surveying.
