Male’ the capital city of Maldives is going through a crisis due to lack of land and sudden increase in population. The project has been divided into three parts; sie analysis, masterpla, and tower. We are to analyse the whole city in three groups. each group analyzed an area no less than 50 m radius. We analyzes Maafahnu and developed a masterplan which would provide housing to the number of people already residing in the site and with an additional 12% iincrease in population. Towers which would free up land spaces are to be developed but not exceeding 20 storeys and a footprint of 2000sqm. Population of Male’ has been rapidly rising and as a result buildings have been getting taller without retaining any of our cultural and social lifestyle or needs. People have become disconnected. Thus for this 15 storey sustainable tower i have drawn inspiration from old lifestyle and culture. “Absorb the old but extend it to become new and innovative” The arrangement of old houses allowed breathing and communal backyards to be connected within the block, I have translated this vertically as sky courts / pockets. There are three types of pockets; retail (up to 4th) farming (5th-13th) and recreation (14th-15th). The building is split in half to create communal spaces and to allow better circulation of wind and access to light.. A part of old life style was going for walks along the beach. This is translated vertically by connected green walkways that open up to picturesque view of falling water and greenery which enhances place making. These paths are connected vertically by ramps and staircases so that people circulate vertically in the pockets. In the olden days “Jaali” is used to let air and light inside the house. This is translated in the building as a bioclimatic skin which open ups to let light in or closes to block the rain and collect it, and harvest sun light energy.

RELIEF

Disaster Relief Social Housing This project is aimed at designing a transitional shelter for the people of Meemu Kolhufushi which had been severely damaged by the 2004 Tsunami. Although the island is now redeveloped with social housing units we were to imagine that the tsunami had hit the Kolhufushi island only a few months into the past. And that the island had been cleared of debris and waste but mass of the population is still living in poorly-constructed temporary relief shelters. The response is to come in the form of a Transitional Shelter prototype – The units when first provided, must immediately be habitable and built to a better quality to that of the temporary relief shelters. The unit must evolve into a full house over a period of time. Based on individual site intepretations the strongest descriptive word for the site is represented in form of a maqutte model. The word i chose was perception. How different people see and percieve the same object/situations differently due to their situation or past. The meaning i took from the touchstone is that the people of kolhufushi was psychologically effected due to what they had to go through. Thus my aim would be to design not only a physical transitional housing, but also a house that will help the people through psychological transition. My design will focus on healing the people psycholgically by giving them control and creates spaces that touch them metaphyscially. Key factor in distinguishing place from space is the ability to interact - this creates a sense of belonging Healing through 4 elements of nature ;air, light, earth, and water. The combination of these 4 elements creates balance and harmony within a space. Harmonious well balanced environmenet helps reduce stress capture imaginations, liverate creativility which all enchance healing.

“Fangivinun” : is the main economic of the women. This acticity is taken place in open areas such as front yard and verandas.

“Fan hovun” Since thatch weaving is the main occupation women set off to collect dried palm leave early in the morning

PART 02: TOUCHSTONE PERCEPTION

Their homes swept away. Their lives destroyed. For 10 years they suffered through the hardship of the aftermath. Each day yearning for a better life. They were fine with anything they got. As long as it makes their lives even a little bit better. They were decieved by their own minds. They thoughtlessly accepted the little they got as if it was gold, even though they deserve better.

The object is perceieved differently based on different people and their mentality

An object so distorted and imperfect can be perfect for some poeple

WEAVING MEADOW Community Center

This project is divided into four parts; Macro Site Analysisi, Micro Site Anlysis, Master plan and individual detailing of one building. While the first three are group works the latter is an invidual work. The aim is to design a communty center for Alifushi located in Raa Atoll of Maldives. The center is to fit the context socially, economically, and environmentally. The site is located in-between the Boat yard and the residence, hence the site performance as medium between community and boat building, they lack the conceit of boat building. This is a good opportunity to create highly active mixed used community area where people interact with people and explore the sophistication of boat building, while having their coffee or reading a book by leaning on library couch. The 40000 SQM complex has various functional requirements. Theater, Library, Multipurpose hall, institutional building, shops, cafÊ’, Agricultural field, sport facilities, with the aim of maximizing both the preservation of nature of the site and the connectivity to the boat yard. The buildings are bonded from flow of ribbon structure which leads to the site form the harbor. For my design i selected the learning institute to be developed and designed. I felt that the Problem with current learning insitutes is the arrangement of spaces that prevents visibility and involvemet from the outside. This restricts the community from admiring and appreciating the works of students. Thus my concept is to make the leaning institute more permeable to everyone yet at the same time maintaining peripherals so it doesnt compromise the privacy of the students compleltly. A similar precedent of spacial layout was already present in the island of alifushi; the old town of alifushi has arrangement which is permeable yet at the same time some spaces are private. This idea is used to devlope my design.

Affordable Row Housing Hulhumale’ is located in Kaafu Atoll of Maldives. It was an artificial island brought about to tackle the problem of overcrowding in the capital of Maldives, Male’. The developement of the island is distributed into three phases. Initial phase finished in the year 2002 and in the year 2004 the city had officially inaugrated with just 1000 people. Since then the population has increased to 30 000. In accordance to the residents living in Hulhumale’, they don’t view their current residences as a permanent place to settle in. Our objective is to propose a design for a Row house which is affordable and at the same time make it desirable for the people who will recide in them. Male’ being the capital of Maldives, all the facilities are in Male’. It is causing more people from less developed islands to move to male’ to attain those facilities. Male’ became compact as a result of that, Hulhumale’ which was developed to solve this problem is gradually becoming another Male’. It is not uncommon to see more than 3 people living in a single small room, there is no privacy to the occupants within the house as well as from outside. Privacy is important as we are a muslim country. People are being physically and emotionally constrained as a result of living in such conditions. The situation is such that a home does not feel like a home anymore but rather a place where they just live, without a sense of belonging. Yet, they have accepted that it is not a problem as long as they get the facilities. But the question arises weather they really have to sacrifice their privacy and comfort just to get those facilities? We are currently going through a paradigm shift. Maldivians thinking and life style has changed over the years from an easy going life style to a more ambitious lifestyle. Previously people were content with what they had and they liked to live in a communal society but now that has changed. People do crave communal spaces where whole family can interect but even most family oriented poeple need privacy once in a while as veryone is different when

Habitat

For our Design project 01, we were to make a habitat for our self that fit our anthropometry so as to be unique to us. We first chose two words that best describes our personality and represent those two words in our design. The habitat was to be placed in Sultan Park, Male’ on a Friday. Surrounding the museum, Sultan’s Park was once part of the grounds of the sultan’s palace. It is bustling with students, tourists, and locals even on the hottest time of the day due its location. Four major schools and National Library are adjacent to the site and tourist attractions are nearby making it one of the most pleasant public space in Male’. The words that I chose are “Reticent” and “Vibrant”. Reticent because I have a tendency to keep my thoughts and feeling to myself and not share it with others. Sometimes this bothers other people. So in a sense my real self is hidden from others. On the other hand I am someone who exudes energy and enthusiasms. I have many sides to my personality hence that also represents vibrant side of my personality. Hence my concept is to create a habitat that is reserved but exudes vibrancy. A space where I can choose whether to interact with outside or not. An umbrella can be used to hide yourself from rain, sun, or people. Yet at the same time it is appealing to others who gets a glimpse of it.
