New AD Partner in Israel p. 10 AD partners investing in logistics p. 14 1

SUMM!T April 2017 19 - 20 The ADI Summit is Autodistribution International’s annual congress where leaders of the European automotive parts manufacturing industry meet with the 25 ADI Partners. This year’s setting (19 and 20 April) was the Hilton Antwerp Old Town in Belgium’s largest city and 2nd European port town Antwerp. On the evening of the first day, the ADI president Thomas VOLLMAR welcomed 170 guests in the Hilton Belle Epoque room, where he commented ADI’s performance and growth in a plenary meeting: In 2016 ADI as a group showed double digit growth, thus outperforming the modest growth of the European aftermarket. In a rapidly changing European market, ADI-Partners strengthened their position through well targeted acquisitions. President Thomas VOLLMAR was therefore proud to announce that within the framework of ADI, Autodistribution France & AD Benelux have agreed

on a new model of cooperation in the Belgian market offering new opportunities for all stakeholders.

ADI extends its footprint in the Middle East. The ADI President briefly referred to the affiliation of AD Adria in 2016 in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Slovenia and announced the affiliation of a new Partner AD Israel (Comet & Progress) joining ADI as of 01.04. With 25 Partners, ADI thus expands its footprint to 40 countries.

CARIAM, the award for Excellence in supporting the independent aftermarket. In his speech, Thomas Vollmar thanked the parts manufacturing industry for their support of the ADI distributors and of the IAM more in general. He pointed out that the industry’s position in the present political and legal environment concerning the game changing new technologies in general and telematics in particular, needs

Press release Broad coalition of automotive aftermarket operators and mobility-service providers gives powerful message to EU Institutions on the need for a robust legal framework to maintain consumer choice in the digital era.

Brussels, 9 May 2017. ‘Creating a robust regulatory technical framework for an interoperable, standardised, secure and safe digital in-vehicle telematics platform to make the European Digital Economy for the automotive aftermarket and mobility services a reality’: this was the strong call from a broad stakeholder coalition to the European Institutions during a Policy Lunch, held in Brussels on 3 May. Only in this way can fair competition, innovation and entrepreneurship, and freedom of consumer choice be safeguarded, so that competitive business models can evolve to provide the benefits around the ‘connected car’ and the development of the digital economy.

mobility market as open and competitive as possible is a goal for the European Commission.

The stakeholder coalition embraces the European associations representing vehicle dealers, authorised and independent workshops, periodic testing centres, independent publishers of technical information, manufacturers of garage test equipment, independent wholesalers of automotive replacement parts, the rental and leasing industry as well as the mobility clubs.

Bernfried Coldewey from Germany’s ADAC Automobile Club gave a live demonstration of how an Open Telematics Platform could operate if direct access to the vehicle, its data and resources is ensured. The dashboard display of the car would show the choice of applications freely chosen by the consumer and displayed in their car. At present, the consumer has only a ‘monopolistic choice’ of applications i.e. chosen by the vehicle manufacturer. In the event of a breakdown, a safe remote connection from ADAC with the vehicle would be able to detect the fault – and in some cases even remedy remotely – to allow the driver to continue his journey. Each data-transmission asks for authorisation, granting the user full control of their data. Bernfried Coldewey concluded that this service would not be possible with the vehicle manufacturers’ so-called ‘Extended Vehicle’, currently proposed by the vehicle manufacturers as the solution for third-party data access.

During the event, chaired by Ismail Ertug MEP, the stakeholder coalition demonstrated the importance of direct access to the vehicle, its data and resources to enable innovative and competitive digital products and services. Today, competition starts in the vehicle with direct access to ‘full and fresh’ data. The quality of the data dictates the quality of the service. In the automotive aftermarket, operators and mobility-services providers need real-time access to today’s connected vehicle and its data. Currently, this data only goes via ‘closed’ telematics systems to the servers of the respective vehicle manufacturers, from where all other service providers are offered access to a reduced quality of data. This makes it impossible for all these other service providers to compete fairly and equally.

Nigel Goodall of Enterprise Holdings explained that the ‘connected customer’ of today requires smart, customised mobility services. For the rental and leasing industry, this means the capacity to offer flexible services on demand (e.g. a status check and hand-over of vehicles as part of short-term hire car clubs) and remote communication with the vehicle. For this, a direct, real-time connection to the vehicle is essential to allow smart fleet-management and digital mobility solutions.

The Open Interoperable Telematics Platform would, of course, be as secure, if not more so, than the current system that exchanges data with the vehicle manufacturers’ servers. Markus Bartsch of TÜViT presented the robust and proven security case for third-party access to standardised and interoperable platforms, to clearly support this imporIn this context, the key-note contribution of Joanna Szy- tant point. chowska, DG Grow Head of Automotive & Mobility Industries Unit, explained that the GEAR 2030 process is indeed Professor Michael Matoni from the Technical University of now much broader than the previous CARS 2020 exercise, Cologne presented the first results of a study on the effects taking downstream value chains into account. Mihai Staicu (AD Auto Total, Romania) wins ADI 2017 Aftermarket Professional of the Year Award during ADI Summit The ADI Aftermarket Professional of the Year was awarded for the first time in 2010 and was meant to honour a professional (not a company) for his/her merits in the automotive aftermarket.

When the ADI President Thomas Vollmar unveiled the image and the name of the 2017 winner, Mihai was extremely moved: “I could not be more surprised and touched by such a recognition, knowing that the electorate itself – all participants of the ADI Summit - is composed of highly skilled professionals from both trade and industry”.

CARAT (AD Deutschland): future oriented ! On May 20 CARAT, ADI Partner in Germany, celebrated 20 years of successful business in the German automotive aftermarket. To attend this extraordinary event, all 140 CARAT distributors, 300 participants in total, had travelled to the sunny capital of Spain – Madrid. The agenda of the General Assembly held at this same occasion definitely reflects CARAT’s determination to continue on the path of success for at least another 20 years. By an almost unanimous decision, the CARAT distributors agreed to make available the AD Cargo central logistics centre to other interested parts distributors as well as to online networks of both trade and car repair. Helmut Ernst (ZF Trading) and Peter Wagner (Continental), both in charge of the aftermarket divisions in their respective companies, were invited to illustrate new business models including in-vehicle telematics data.

Last but not least, the Assembly approved a project that will allow CARAT to capture automotive business in the online world. CARAT President Thomas Vollmar is pragmatic about this new approach: “No one can deny the rising of digitalisation in the automotive parts business as well as in any other branch. Denying the trend would be suicide and if we don’t do it, someone else will. We still want to be selling parts successfully in the next 20 years!”. Clearly CARAT and its distributors intend to face the aftermarket challenges of the 21st century and leave no opportunity unused, whether off- or online, B2B or B2C.
