PROJECT Viana Do Castelo public places in hybrid teritories

Project Summary

The challange of this project is to make a design in a certain area called Campo d’Agonia. The location it self located in Portugal in Viana Do Castelo city. The site is a new public space in Viana do CAstelo in the edge of the compact city centre. Though the fact that it was quiet a big space but in urban perspective people dont use the site very often. Looking at the location it self which is locate dbetween the old city of Viana Do Castelo and the extension area such as harbour and the Industrial area, it seems that it is going to be interesting to compare the development of this area to the former harbor in The NEtherlands. Therefore, In this project we are going to start it with a research and an analysis in the former harbor in The Netherlands, then we can compare or use the result for the development in Viana Do Castelo.

Narrative

Before starting the analysis and the research in the Netherlands site we were given a theme to make a research on. In my case, i am going to analyse the narration of the site and make a toolbox out of it. The Narrative it self we defined as a story where we had. A story it self basicly were coming from a history. Because as people were teling about a story, basicly they were telling a past story which we usually called the history. The Presence of the story from the past were determined on the presence. no matter what the presence is doing it is going to be what so called as a history, which in this case, the narrative. The next challange is to design our own future to create a good narrative to be told to other. In Urban context, its the history of the area that appear on the building and the condition of the area, and so, to make an analysis of this i started to choose 3 former harbour in the Netherland and compare the condition that occurs now and the past.

Sands are the main comodity in the area

Narrative As the new Borneo appear, there seems nothing left from the ‘old borneo’, creating a new image and new function in the area. Containers are located along the location giving indication that this is one of the important port for amsterdam during the era

"Borneo Sporenburg was a dock area on the outskirts of Amsterdam serving trade with Holland’s colonies in the East. As part of the phased regeneration of these now disused areas, a residential brief of 2500 dwellings was set for this zone, dictating a high density of housing, despite the predominant market demand for a suburban self-contained house. The development demonstrates that family housing is not incompatible with dense urban areas. It reverses the predominant social trend towards a dense urban core inhabited by childless couples, singles and the extremes of high and low income, and a suburban fringe occupied by middle-class families.

Quarantaine Analysis & Research

Narrative

Opened in year 1939, Heijplaat Quarantaine was built to quarantine people whose are invaded by rare disease. Later the day, it becomes the shelter of Jewish refugees, tuberculosis infected patients, and pshchiatric patients. As the world war 2 occurs, the place was occupied by Germany as marine base. Now it is used for art studios and some even living inside it.

Narrative

The port was named after a transport and trading company built by a German Industrialist Wilhem Muller. Later on, the warehouses which is built over there were demolished and the place was used for special events such as fairs, festivals, and parties. In the year of '80s a plan of room for 800 homes were made by a British Architect, but then it was realized by Two Urban Designer, Kees Christiaanse and Ruurd Gietema creating 575 recidences, a restaurant and shops on the Mullerpier.

The IDEA COMBINING LAYERS

Looking at the present condition of the space, then it is important to keep it as an open space so that we can still have the idea of the old area. Therefore the idea that appears is that both layers are combined into an area. The residence on the bottom and the open space on the top, so that it still have a feeling where the area was an open space where the fact that people were actually living under it.

public places in hybrid teritories

Project Summary European cities are not autonomous nucleuses surrounded by landscape used for agriculture anymore. cities are multifaceted connected on various levels and create networks by combining landscape areas. If we, as urban designers, manage to understand these structures, we should be able to implement the future development of these city systems in our designs. Because of its specific geographical position in europe, the Brenner Pass shows a various network of agglomerations, agliculture, tourist leisure areas and natural parks. Charateristic of the mountain area is also that the different levels of the network (local, regional and global) are very clearly apparent. source : ‘ Brennero 2030 introductin booklet’ by Ir. M.J.R. The challange of this project is to make an urban improvement so that the urban quality of the area are improved along with their growth until 2030. In this project i started by looking at the Urban elements on the area between Bolzano city and Trento. The Elements tha appears are the line of the river highway, railway and the borders which is made by the presence of te valley. The valley surrounds in the area and making a borders that limits the growth and the shape of the city it self along the area.

Valley Branch VS The City In this analysis i found an interesting connection between the valley branch and the city. Most of the city that appeared in this valley seemed to coming out of the valley branch. Though the fact that not every city were created near the valley branch, but almost 90% that appear in this area were created that way.

the river the highway the railway the city the valey border the valey branch

Not to be growing from the branch but more likely to dragged from inside it and developed coming out from the branch, showing several typology on this branch growing. Therefore i decided to reanalize and doing research regarding this situation.

Mountain border

Growth direction

Each of the valley create different and uniqe borders . These borders, were created from the shape of the mountain that surrounds the area. In type A the city goes on the branch but only following the shape of the mountain. In type B the city coming out from the branch and spread awayas its coming out from the valley. In type C the city were located in the middle of the turnings and the front of it.

As it is appeared, it shows a patrern where the city will eventually grows. In type A the city growth are going following the shape of the mountain, but different thing goes with type B where the growth are going inside the branch an going under following the road line. But in type C the branch it self appeared in a different way. The city will grow to the middle of the valley and join the other city that created in the area.

Mountain, Road, City

Section The section showing that in type A the city stops right on the curves of the mountain leaving the mountain as a limit for it to grow. In type B the city also goes inside the valley. The type C its even standing right on the front of the mountain not like in the branch or in the front of it.

45

This is the typology that appears within the connection of the mountains the road and the city itself. In type A The city is going along the mountain, but unlike type B the road going against the mountain. In type C the city goes against the mountain but also following the line of the the mountain but more into the centre of the valley itself.

Present Condition

Normal Condition

Lack of Social space Surrounded by the high valley, the location were lack of social space for people to gather because it is hard to find a flat land in the area.

Flat land is the most ideal area for social space, because then people were able to do some sport or some atoher free activites than having an activity on the curved valley.

Lack of Interaction By the fact that the housing is not built in the same level, it is hard to communicate with the neighbour directly from house to house.

In the normal condition, the houses were built in the same level, making the neighbours were able to communicate each other easily.

General Skill

Communication Presentation Skills

Verbal Skills & Having in a foreign Language As i arrived in the Netherland I demanded to speak english all the time leaving my mother tongue Bahasa Indonesia. The challenge was i have to be able to do a two way communication and make network as i work with my colleagues. On the project Kop van Overijsel i made a team where we discussed on the research that we need to design on the way. Over there i found my self doing my general skill or doing a verbal skill and having myself in a foreign laguage, and in this case is, English.

Working Meeting & Writing Skills In saxion i learned two lesson on general skill, but the other class moreover called professional skill. In my professional skill class we were told to make a presentation about our home town. I the presentation i got a feedback which mentioned that my presentation was an outstanding presentation. But things somehow goes differently as i do my Urban design presentation skill. In the Design week i did a presentation about my brenerro project and it seems they understand what i have presentate, that indicates my ability in presentation as the information that i gave were received by the audience in a good way.

At the first meeting of Kop Van Overijssel we were trusted to held our own meeting to arrange a dinner for the night. At that moment i volunteer myself as a secretary and making minutes. As i make the minutes i learn that it is quiet difficult to write minutes if the meeting doesn’t go in an order way, and so i help the leader by giving him some points to say as he lead the meeting. As the meeting goes orderly i am then be able to write minutes as supposed to be so that the other can learn what we had at the meeting.

Project Working I implemented this general skill when we did our Design Week about Mousakka city. Then in this General skill i think best to explain it in the time when i had my Design week.

Planning preparation

The project itself were held in the middle of the first semester. Over there we were told to make an instalation based on our project research. Our topic itself were direction and future. From here we prepare our self by studying each of our subject and gather it so that we can make a researh out of it. The subject itself were actually a result of our project in brennero. My subject at that time was dIrection and visualization while nichole and yoona’s subjects are about futurism. From there we start bay combining our subjects and make a small vision about each of our subject.

Organizing / controling / evaluating In this process we were making a time table for us to work on this project Monday 11.00 - 11.20 Introduction 11.20 - 12.00 Subject Presentation 12.00 - 13.00 Project vision discussion 13.00 - 14.00 Pause 14.00 - 15.00 Collecting data Tuesday 09.00 - 11.00 Analyzing with building siteplan 11.00 - 13.00 Making models with string 13.00 - 14.00 Pause 14.00 - 15.00 Introduction Wednesday 09.00 - 11.00 Design Discussion 09.00 - 13.00 Making Instalation 13.00 - 14.00 Pause 14.00 - 15.00 Making Instalation Thursday 09.00 - 11.30 Attach Instalation 11.30 - 15.00 Presentation Everyday after the day we always sit tigether and evaluate the day before we go home.

Executing & Cooperating As we execute the idea we find out that its not aeasy to run everything like what we have planned. At the first two days the participant were seemed to be still exited with the idea, but later on the day the participant were decreasing. Looking at this situation then we make a small discussion also involving on of the participant and gatting feedback for the next days. Later on we realize that the lost the idea that they were looking for firstly at the presentation. Before we knew it the project somehow goes to another direction, then the next day we make a discussion again to solve this problem and make thing sout.

Managing In this role, even though not really stated, i was standing as a leader. At first there is no specific act about taking role on this but then looking at my dominant role the project goes under mylead. Everybody were taking role as an asistant to the student and im holding the role at watching how the project goes. What best about our team is that, even though i am quiet dominant the idea which being used is a result of a discussion where all ideas were gathered into one idea.

At the end, yoena had a role on presentating the final presentation, yu, soojin and nichole were helping the students working on the instalation.

Thinking and acting analytical Circumstances

Collecting / structuring of information

In the project of Brennero i started by looking at the present condition which is owned by bolzano. I make a drawing of the riverline, the railway , the highway and the line of the valley. By having these data i am then be able to see the potensial that the bolzano had and looking further on what i have seen. BUt another case coming from my project in viana do castello, in this project i’m analyzing on how the difference coming from the three former harbour in the netherlands. In this process i got a dspecific difference between the three that enables me to go further for the project in viana do castello.

Analyzing & Describing / Integrating

At the first i was drawing i was expecting to find how the lane are made by the valley but then i see something else which is more interesting. I found out that almost all of the city that is developing on the valley is start to grow from the branch of the valley. creating a certain growth pattern on each of the branch valley.

C

Event or Surprise

On the Viana do castello project , as i finished analyzing the situation in the former harbor i found out that there are some sort of connection between the change on the physic with facility and activity that goes inside it. As i found this idea i go deep with this and making the research as my tollbox which actually can be used in any condition.

Modelling & Developing strategies for solutions After finding my toolboxes i go on by making strategies for the problem based on the toolbox. For example, in my project in Brennero i find out if we wanted to make an area with the same feeling like before, then we need to keep the phisical condition, but we can still have a new facility and activity inside it. On the right you will find the toolbox and sollution that i have made.

Self responsible Functioning Contract As i receive my contract, the contract it self become my trigger to undergo my goal to get my degree as an urban designer as well as an architect . Therefore i’m fulfilling it by doing all the learning process in Urban Design class until the very last process, and that is making final portfolio

Curriculum Vitae In my curriculum vitae consist my skill and personal abilities in urban design, architecture as well as my personal skill. I stated that i have several organizational skill that is useful for the team working in a company or in an cosultant. In my Curriculum Vitae i can see my strength and opportunities which i can use for my future development.

Feedback In the time i undergo my studies in Urban Design i receive my feedback both for my general skill and for my professional skill. From those feedback i can learn all my weakness and my thread as an urban designer which i can antisipate for further development.

Personal Development Plan After getting information on my curriculum vitae and feedback, i analize and put it in my personal development plan. I made an SWOT analysis and make plans antisipation for my personal further development.

Carrying Out Applied research Design/ lay out of the research My goal on the project vianna do castelo is to make a space with the same feeling as before. Then the problem that appear in the situation is that what are the existing in viana that can stimulates this feeling. From this i started to design the layout research by looking at the existing and critizied by making more research from it, on how this existing could help the concept and created is as i wanted. Then i found out that the existing it self is an open space then i need to leave the exsting but with a little modification so that the the we can have new activity but with the same feeling as its an open space.

Processing and translating data ,Deducing and evaluating In the viana do castelo i found out that there are more exsiting that could help me to reach the concept and that is the presence of the old building that remains in the area. With my toolbox i can use it as a tool to reach my concept and keeping it that way. Bcause whats best about the concept that i choose is that i can keep the old building while the building itself is a conserve building that is needed to be preserve. So I can have the sense that the toolbox is working well also suitable for the specific area like viana do castelo itself
