This paper's success depends on you, the readers, so please send us any p ertin en t inform ation on the NorCal running scene that you would lik e to see in p r in t . This month we had a great number o f contributors but i t was disappointing to see the very poor response we had from coaches fo r scheduling. We sent out over 100 fr e e August issues w ith requests fo r cross country meet inform ation and had only about a 10% response. We can always use good photos fo r our p u b lic a tio n . They should be good contrast and p r e f e r a b l y black and w h ite . A l l inform ation should be sent to the e d ito r , NorCal Running Review, P.O. WHEN YOU MOVE------Please send us your address change immediate l y . The NCRR is not--- forwardable usually as i t is th ird c la s s . Many o f our subscribers have not been g e ttin g th e ir issues because o f th is m istake. ON MAILING You probably noticed la s t time that your NCRR came f i r s t c la s s , even though we said i t would come th ird c la s s ! ! I t was a rare occurrence. The paper our p rin te r used ju st happened t o be su p e r-lig h t and we passed 7 sheets f o r under an ounce. Usu a l l y we can only get 6 sheets fo r an ounce. We s h a ll continue to m ail f i r s t class when p ossib le in the future when weight allows us to do so. L igh t paper is not always a v a ila b le and i t is much more d i f f i c u l t to run through our p r in te r 's equipment. *

So f a r , Bob Crow, Duncan Macdonald, Don Kardong, Esteban V a lle , Wayne Glusker, Jim Dare, A lvaro M ejia, Hernan Barreneche, V ic to r Mora, Bob Brunkan, and Domingo Tibadu iz a have a l l been. L o t 's o f luck to "Large Don", who rewrote many o f the c lu b 's distance run ning records during the past yea r. He should go on to gre a te r achievements in the future y e a rs . Mike Ryan, our Tennessee fo o th o ld , has been g e ttin g r e a lly a raw deal from the A ir F orce. He had applied fo r an e a r ly out, e f f e c t i v e July l4 th , and i t had been approved. He was planning on going to UOP law school in Stockton, they (he and his w ife Amey) had alread y packed and Amey had qu it her job , when he got a c a ll from personnel. They proceeded to t e l l him that the orders had been c a n celled . A fte r a h e ll o f a lo t o f checking around, he found out th at a congressman from Louisiana and Chairman o f the House Armed Services Committee, had found out about A ir Force Aca demy graduates g e ttin g out e a r ly , and he raised h e ll w ith the Se c re ta ry o f the A ir F o rce . The re s u lt was that about 71 guys who had been given permission f o r an e a r ly separation were suddenly screwed to the w a ll. The r e a lly bad th ing is that no firm d e c i sion has been made about le t t in g them out or keeping them in . So Mike may w e ll have to w ait awhile u n til a l l the p o lit ic s get ironed ou t. Meanwhile, they s u ffe r . NCRR LONG DISTANCE POINT RACE This y e a r's NCRR point race w i l l o f f e r two perpetual trophies fo r the winners in the open and senior d iv is io n s . The winners o f the past two years w i l l have th e ir names and point to ta ls engraved on the trop h ies as w e ll. For the u n in itia te d , here is b a s ic a lly <how our point system works. I t is based on not only the number o f races run, but a lso on average p la c in g . To fig u re out your own t o t a l , m erely take your average p lacin g and d iv id e i t by the number o f races run. As an example, i f you placed 5th, 6th, and 7th in three races, your average place would be 6th. D ivide th is by 3 (number o f races run) to g et your point ra tin g o f 2 .0 . Anyone can keep track o f th e ir scores, and we encourage those lis t e d below to keep tabs on us and send in your records at the end o f the year i f they d i f f e r from ours. We added a few other ru les to our system: (a ) Races must be attended by a reasonable number o f a th le te s (t o be determined by the e d ito r at th is poin t in tim e...m aybe using some other method l a t e r ) , and must be PA-AAU sanctioned events, or at le a s t take place in the PA-AAU with su b stan tial numbers o f p a rtic ip a n ts ; (b ) we on ly count fin is h e r s in the top 10 (open) and top s ix (s e n io r ) fo r our ra n k in g s...y ou need not be lim ited to th is in fig u r in g your own personal t o t a ls . I f a lis t e d runner fin ish ed out o f the top ten (o r top 6 fo r s e n io rs ) in a given race, th is i s n 't counted against him; ( c ) a l l a th le te s re s id in g in the PA-AAU are e l i g ib le , whether re g is te re d in the A ssociation or not (e . g . - Ray Darwin, John Anderson), as w e ll as PA a th le te s re s id in g outside the A ssocia tio n ( e . g . - B i l l Scobey); (d ) in meets where two races are held (o r more), the main event s h a ll count fo r open com petition and two races may be counted fo r senior com petition (e . g . - Lake M e rr itt, Monterey, e t c . ) . The scoring year s ta rts w ith the Lake M e rritt Races on Columbus Day. Below are lis t e d the top 15 open com petitors and top 9 se n io rs . Handicap races are counted, but order o f f i n ish is not used. Instead, fa s t-tim e is used in determining the point ra tin g s . In case o f t i e s , the p lacin g is figu re d as an average. I f 2 in d ivid u als tie d f o r 4th p lace, then 4.5 would be used as the fin is h p la c in g . Below, t ie s (2-way) are indicated by an a s te ris k ( * ) , and 3-way t ie s are indicated by a degree sign ( ° ) . We are always in terested in hearing comments from our readers on how we might improve our system...maybe taking in to con sideration the number o f com petitors, q u a lity o f f i e l d , length o f race?? Send us your ideas. Maybe in the coming year we can devise an equation based on a l l (and more) o f these fa c to rs and feed i t to a computer to get standings. The to t a ls below include a l l races through the Emerald H ills Run, except the F elton and Dipsea Races, which we have not received com p le te re s u lts on as y e t . We expect the Dipsea resu lts s h o rtly , however, F elton seems to be a r e a l mess. A fte r 3 le t t e r s to the F elton Businessmen's A ss'n , the race sponsors, concerning a l i s t o f names o f fin is h e r s instead o f race numbers, I have as yet to re c e iv e even a r e p ly . IMPORTANT: We know the top 6 in the race, but that is a l l . I f anyone has knowledge as to who fin ish ed 7-10 (t h e ir race num bers were 255, 143, 193, and 237 r e s p e c t iv e ly ), please rush the names to us im m ediately. We need to compile the to ta ls soon because the scorin g year is almost over. We a ls o need to know who the top 6 seniors were. Come on you old m e n ...le t us know how you placed or we w i l l have to ignore th is race com pletely or ju st count those we know about. Your help is needed u rgen tly. Thanks. * * * Meanwhile, back in the stan d in gs...Jack Leydig ( i t ' s a c tu a lly kind o f embarrassing to be lead in g in your own game) continues to p u ll ahead in the open d iv is io n w ith a 0.160 to 0.204 lead over Darryl B ea rd all, w ith Dan Anderson c lo s in g fa s t in th ird w ith 0 .2 l4 . Both the la t t e r ran in the F elton Race but we c a n 't add th e ir to ta ls y e t. I t would move D arryl up to 0.191 and leave Anderson e s s e n t ia lly unchanged. Re member, the to ta ls fo r th is year end w ith the Napa M arathon...not much time l e f t . A newcomer to the l i s t entered in impressive fash ion . Tom Hale b litz e d his way a l l the way in to a t i e w ith V ic to r Mora fo r fo u rth . Other than th a t, not too many changes in the open d iv is io n standings. Ross Smith (who e ls e ) f i n a l l y broke team mate B i l l Mackey's one year old senior record o f 0.080 by taking two f i r s t s to run h is t o t a l to 15 out o f 18 t r ie s year. Ross' new mark, i f he d oesn 't take i t up s t i l l fu rth e r, stands at a remarkable 0.071H The sen io r s d id n 't run too much the past month and the next 3 d id n 't change. Only other change is that Paul Reese edged ahead o f Jim Nicholson f o r f i f t h place (Paul is 55), and G il Tarin made the l i s t fo r the f i r s t time e v e r, d isp la cin g P eter Wood. SPECIAL ARTICLE The women ath letes in the P a c ific A ssociation who compete in the AAU organized track and f i e l d events, used the in s p ira tio n o f a t r i p to the Olympics to spur th e ir performances during the 1972 season. During cross country season, W i l l 's Spikettes from Sacramento proved themselves unbeatable as they DOMINATED the n a tion al cross country meet in the G ir ls ' D iv is io n (l4 -1 7 ) by p lacing 1 ,2 ,3 ,7 ; and 11 w ith E ileen Claugus, Tina Anex, S h irle y Springer, Sandy Langan, and S h e llie Lucas. This was E ile e n 's second in d ivid u a l championship in a row, and the S p ik e tte s ' second team championship. In the Women's D iv isio n (l4 / u p ), the San Jose Cindergals were th ird in the team standings as Francie L a rrieu was the fou rth in d ivid u a l fin is h e r . For the f i r s t tim e, a separate race was used to choose the United States team f o r the In te rn a tio n a l XC Race. The S e a ttle race in February found E ileen Claugus o f the W i l l 's Spik ettes ju st fou r seconds behind Doris Brown, with Tina Anex (a ls o o f the S p ik e tte s ) and Jackie Dixon from the Cindergals a ls o making the U.S. team. In England, the team took second to England, as E ile en was the second fin is h e r in her f i r s t in tern a tio n a l r a c e . During the indoor season there was no l e t up in the q u a lity o f running, as Ka th y Hammond o f the Sacramento Roadrunners sped to a world record in the 600 yard run during the U .S .-S oviet Indoor Meet, a ft e r she had won the 440 at the AAU Indoor Na tio n a ls in $4.9. Outdoors, Kathy continued her complete domination o f the 400/440 as she won the n ation als by f i f t e e n yards, and won the Olympic T r ia ls w ith a new American record f o r the 400 at $1.8 to fin is h 1.5 seconds ahead o f the f i e l d . On a n a tion al le v e l i t has been the h a lf mile and the mile in which the P a c ific A sso cia tio n has in recent years had the most q u a lity and depth. This year was no e x ception as g i r l s from the PA won n a tion al championships at 400, 1500, 3000 and in the two mile r e la y (San Jose C in d e rg a ls ). In the 800, Francie L a rrieu o f the Cindergals led the a ssociatio n with her best e ver performance o f 2:04 .8 . Cis Schafer o f the M illb rae Lions TC moved up a notch at th is y e a r's nation als from the fou rth o f the la s t two years to th ir d , and improved her time to 2:07 .0 . Nancy Mullen o f the Sacramento Roadrunners, doing her f i r s t s e r ious h a lf-m i lin g , moved in to fou rth at the n a tion als, and showed continuous improve ment through the Olympic T r ia ls . Cindy Poor, from San Jose, ran the h a lf in 2:09.6 a t the State Meet to fin is h second to Wendy Koenig from Denver. In the 1500 and m ile, Francie L arrieu dominated more c le a r ly than did Kathy Hammond in the 400. Francie did notlose a race a l l yea r, and topped her pre-Olympic e f fo r t s w ith a near world record 4:10.4 fo r 1500 at the Olympic T r ia ls . E ile en Claugus, in her quest f o r an Olympic berth , had the dubious misfortune o f chasing Francie a l l yea r. E ile e n , who has ju st turned seventeen, started slow ly on the track a ft e r her cross country successes, and came on lik e a whirlwind to record a best time o f 4:21.4, ju st missing the Olympic 1500 meter standard o f 4:20, and fin is h in g second in the n a tion al 1500 and fou rth at the Olympic T r ia ls race. While E ileen was seeking an Olympic berth , her team mate Tina Anex captured the g i r l s ' d iv is io n m ile (4 :5 0 .9 ) and the women's d i v is io n 3000 meters (9 :4 8 .2 ). Tina is a year younger than E ile e n !! The 5 minute m ile has been a m ilestone in the career o f women runners, and th is year e ig h t g i r l s joined F ran cie, E ile e n , and Tina under th at mark or i t s 1500 meter eq u iv a le n t. In th is s e le c t group you can fin d Spik ettes Ronalee Slosson and Sandy Langan, Cindergals Jackie Dixon and V ic k i and V a le rie E b erly, and Lioness Cis Schafer. In other track even ts, the PA women have proved themselves o f s im ila r q u a lity . In the 100 meter hurdles, Deanne Carlsen and Cherrie Sherrard (both o f the Sacramento Roadrunners), both q u a lifie d f o r the fin a ls in the nation als and the Olympic T r ia ls . C herrie fin ish ed s ix th in the n a tion als, and both lowered th e ir personal bests to a PA record ty in g 13.9. In the pentathlon, the PA got i t s th ird Olympian when M arilyn King o f the M illb ra e Lions fin ish ed second in the Olympic T r ia ls , ju st behind Jane F red erick who now liv e s in Denver, but who comes from Orinda. M a rilyn 's 4206 in the f i v e eventer (100 meterhurdles, 4 k ilo shot, high jump, long jump, and 200 meter run) produced two personal best performances(high jump at 5-5 andlong jump at 20-6 3/4). Other Olympians who came to the PA fo r th e ir tra in in g include MarenS e id le r , who hasbeentra in in g w ith Dr. Brown, the L ion s' f i e l d event coach,since Christmas, and Lucia Vaamonde, a pent athlete from Venezuela who is working w ith M arilyn King and L ion s' head coach Ed P arker. COACH'S CORNER Meet Mike McCord: (Cross Country Coach at Burlingame High School) - The h ig h lig h ts o f M ike's b r i e f coaching career at Burlingame High have come re c e n tly : at the D is tance Runners' Breakfasts at the Hyatt House and the 1971 Mid-Peninsula League Track Meet where his distance runners (v a r s it y ) took two f i r s t s and a second, and four o f h is sophomores s ig n ific a n t ly improved th e ir P R 's. He h esita tes to take c r e d it fo r a l l t h is , but says, " I was quite proud o f them. Just being around frea k y distance runners is a t r e a t . " Mike never ran track or cross country. "In high school I hated running. In c o l le g e I started hanging around w ith S tan ford 's distance running weenies, became in t e r es te d , started jog g in g , and i t a l l escalated a ft e r th a t." He now runs quite re g u la r l y , h its an occassional road race, and enjoys i t thoroughly. " I wish I had more e x p e rie n c e ," he r e la te s , "but I'm learn in g from the running and coaching I'm doing now, and ev en tu a lly I may catch up." His o r ig in a l sources o f knowledge in the tra in in g o f h is a th le te s were Arthur Lydiard and K arl Griepenburg (ex-Burlingame track & XC coach) but l a t e l y he's been g iv in g a lo t o f thought to the Duncan Macdonald system: "lo n g , short and medium runs at moderate, f a s t , or slow pace, separated by sh ort, medium, and long in t e r v a ls ." "Since tra in in g v a ries g r e a t ly w ith a b i l i t y and p e rs o n a lity fa c to r s , i t ' s d i f f i c u lt fo r me to say to many s p e c ific s on how I tr a in my a th le te s ." The gen eral pattern he sets fo r th is as fo llo w s : In mid-season XC----Mon. moderate distance (7-10 m ile s ), Tues. Meet, Wed. long distance (10-16 m ile s ), Thurs. moderate distance (8-12 m ile s ), F r i . o ff- t r a c k in te rv a ls (880 or m ile ) follow ed by a short distance run (3-5 m ile s ). On the weekend, runners are on th e ir own. "Many o f them work in runs between p a r t ie s ." Some o f his runners work out in the morning and l i f t w eights. " I encourage th is in d iv id u a l work but d on 't r e a l l y requ ire anything beyond the school week schedule and an occasion al Saturday workout. I lik e h i l l s and t r y to include at le a s t one or,tw o tough h i l l s in each distance workout." j In referen ce to road racin g fo r his runners, Mike f e e ls th a t, "young runners should run road races i f they en joy them— I encourage my runners to at le a s t t r y one f o r the experien ce. I d on 't f e e l , however, that any young runner should run races o f

any kind a l l year-round, and I have discouraged runners from attempting a marathon when th ey w eren 't adequately prepared." Mike h its a discordant note when ta lk in g about the American system o f a th le tic s . " I f e e l that the American system o f a th le tic s is about as good as the Ameri can system o f p o l i t i c s . Anything is to le r a b le i f you have a proper ap p reciation o f the absurd. I f any a th le te keeps his head, he can enjoy a th le tic s in s p ite o f i d i o t ic sports w riters, ulcerated coaches, a th le tic scholarships, and organized hassles. But o f course I may be wrong---being a t e r r ib le a th le te m yself I 'v e never been sub jected to these pressu res." At any r a te , Mike w i l l have h im self a p r e tty f a i r cross country team th is com in g f a l l , led by a probable th reat f o r the Mid-Peninsula XC in d ivid u a l crown in P e te r Brown,who had a tremendous e a r ly season la s t f a l l b efo re being f e lle d w ith a knee in ju ry . He could go a l l the way on to win the C.C.S. t i t l e i f a l l goes w e ll and i f Mike continues to coach;his a th le te s in a "humane way", not pressuring them in to things t h e y 'l l re b e l a g a in st. Mike w i l l most c e r ta in ly continue to become one o f the b e tte r coaches in the )ar ea with a b it more exp erien ce. )

Meet Chuck Smead{ The month o f September brings to the West V a lle y P o r tr a it a run ner who t r u ly has disproved the! old V ic to ria n b e l i e f that marathon races are f o r the o ld e r and more mature distance runners. When at the tender age o f 17, he e f f o r t le s s ly came home )the winner in the tough Palos Verdes Marathon in a time o f 2:23:04. That was in 196$. Just a l i t t l e over three years la t e r Chuck has proven him self to be a true "mountain goat" by b lit z in g to an ascent record in the Pikes Peak Marathon in Colorado— a sparkling 2:09:30, which broke Steve Gachupin's record by some f i v e minutes. (Read about th is in the re s u lts section o f the current is s u e ). Chuck also has very good marks in other events besides the marathon. Not blessed with a g rea t deal o f speed ( 25.8 f o r the 220), Chuck can run the 880 in 1:59.1 and the m ile in 4:16 .2 . In the longer distances, he has done 9:07 fo r 2 m iles, 14:15 fo r 3 m iles, 29:25 fo r 6 m iles and a very good 11 m iles, l4 6 l yards fo r the hour run w hile s t i l l 17 years o ld . On the roads, Chuck has done 49:51 f o r 10 m iles and 1:37:09 f o r 30 K ilo s among other tim es. The schedule o f tra in in g that has contributed to the above performances is a constant steady output o f 90-100 m iles per week, ex e cuted in a hard-easy pattern w ith a long run o f 20-32 m iles on weekends. His track workouts are lim ited to only 3 times a week in sea son ( 5 x 1 m ile and two sessions o f sp rin t w ork). A l l other workouts are done on the roads w ith the ad d ition o f a f a r t le k workout once a week during cross country season. 'The pace o f my workouts v a rie s between 5 minutes and 8 minutes a m ile, depending on how I f e e l . " He also b e lie v e s in upper body work and does pushups, pull-ups and situps tw ice a week. " I b e lie v e a great deal in a ltitu d e tr a in in g . I t r y to g et above 5000 f e e t at le a s t once a week i f p o s s ib le ." Despite his c red en tia ls in long races, his goal f o r now is the shorter distances (o r at le a s t sub-marathon) at 2 ,3 , and6 m iles on the track and cross country, w ith p lacin g in the top 5 in the NCAA C ollege D iv isio n XC Championships his g o a l. With a l l his b est track times coming at the age o f 16 - 1 7 , he stands a good chance o f success in the shorter ra ces. His three most e x c itin g moments in his ca re e r have come at the Palos Verdes Marathon when he ran his 2:23:04 w hile s t i l l . 17, winning the N ational AAU 15 K ilo and fo llo w in g i t up the next week by winning the Pikes Peak Marathon. When he broke 9:20 fo r the f i r s t time in high school (as a ju n io r) he a lso had one o f his major career moments. C u rrently a student at Humboldt S ta te, Chuck should have a tremendous cross country season w ith his great e a r ly season con ditionin g (in C olorad o). A l l his team mates wish him the best o f luck in his quest fo r a place in the AAU Meet th is f a l l as w e ll as the NCAA C ollege Meet.

LONG DISTANCE RESULTS Chuck Smead Races to New Pikes Peak Marathon Ascent Record: (Aug. 13, Pikes Peak, C o lo .) - Only a short week a ft e r winning the N ation a l AAU 15 K ilo t i t l e in Denver, West V a lle y TC's Chuck Smead, a student at Humboldt State C ollege in Arcata, C a lifo r n ia , proved th at i t was indeed p ossib le to beat Steve Gachupin at his own game...namely running the famed Pikes Peak Marathon. In f a c t , Chuck not only had an easy time beating Gachupin, but so did e ig h t oth ers. Working hard on the ascent, Smead had a commanding 23 minute lead at the top, and smashed Gachupin's record by some f i v e minutes in the process. His 2:09:30 w i l l probably not stand ve ry long though i f he runs i t again next yea r. Although t i r i n g on the downhill p ortion (la s t h a l f ) , he s t i l l managed a 3:44:21, but missed the record (a ls o held by Gachupin) by about 5 m in u tes...record is 3:39:47 and Chuck ran 3:44:21. The time was set in 1968 (assume the ascent record was set at th at time to o , but d on 't know fo r s u r e ). Dave Quinn, 24, o f Steamboat Sprin gs, Colorado was a we11-beaten second, but managed to close s li g h t l y on the leader to record a 4:04:55 in fro n t o f Lee Courkamp (Arvada, C o lo .), 4:22:35. Ex-m iler Ernie C u n liffe did w e ll and got fou rth in 4:23:00. C a lifo rn ia n s did e x c e p tio n a lly w e ll as 4 fin ish ed in the top 10. L o t's o f other C a lifo r nians made the ascent only in various d iv is io n s . They are summarized below, but f i r s t a few comments...Northern C a lifo r n ia 's rep resen t a tiv e s did an e x c e lle n t job , and not only in the open (round t r i p ) d iv is io n . Larry Fox, 50, o f Campbell, ran a great second place in h is d iv is io n (5 0 -5 9 ), with an elapsed time o f 3 :l6 :4 o behind Dr. Frank McCabe's record 3:00:50. Mary C re v e lt got second in her d iv is io n ( g i r l s 15 and under) with a 5:55:25, behind the 4:28:26 o f E lis a De C iu ttis o f Palos Verdes ( i t should be mentioned th at Mary is 9 while E lis a is l 4 l i ) . In the women's race (l 6 & o v e r ), Joan U lly o t, 32, o f San Fran cisco, missed the winner by only 6 minutes and recorded a g re a t 3:34:30 fo r second. A geless Wal t Stack, now 64, took his time in 3:46:13 to win the 60-69 d iv is io n , but f e l l fa r short o f his r e cord o f la s t year (3 :2 5 :5 6 ). TOM HALE OVERCOMES HEAT TO EDGE BEARDALL AT LAFAYETTE (J u ly 15, L a fa y ette R e s e rv o ir) - Tom Hale, on his way to Oregon th is f a l l to run f o r "Bowerman's b oys", made his summer road-running debute in fin e s t y le , but almost succumbed to the 90 degree heat (even though the race was held at 9 in the morning) as three runners were less fortunate and collapsed and had to be taken to the h o s p ita l in extrem ely poor con d ition . Race o f f i c i a l s were com pletely un prepared fo r th is s itu a tio n and fa ile d to issue warnings when the race began. Hale started out at a ve ry fa s t pace, dragging Jack Ley d ig behind him fo r about 2 m iles b efore he went on alone (Leydig dropped out, thinking i t wise not to challenge the h e a t). However, in the l a t t e r stages o f the race he slowed remarkably and D arryl B ea rd all, running a more con servative race under the adverse con dition s, almost hauled him down, missing by on ly some 24 seconds. WEST VALLEY KNOCKS l4 MINUTES OFF TAHOE RELAYS RECORD (August 12, Lake Tahoe) - I t wasn't to o long ago, 1968 to be exact, when the f i r s t sub-7 hour e f f o r t was made "around the la k e ", and people were ta lk in g about how a club squad would never go th at fa s t (th e 6:55 was run by a pu t-togeth er team from the Olympic Training Camp in So. Lake Tahoe and included such notables as Van Nelson, Gene Comroe, Tracy Smith, and o th e rs ). But p r e tty soon qu ite a few clubs had dipped below the magic mark. P a c ific Coast Club was the f i r s t to do so in 1970 along with West V a lle y TC. Last year West V a lle y lowered PCC's mark even fu rth er to 6:47:11 and two other teams went under 7 hours...Mad R iver and a m ake-shift team m ostly o f Oklahoma State runners. People were p re tty sure the record would go again w it^ a stronger WVTC squad, but no one had dreamed that any team could get so close to 6:30. The team, composed o f Skip Houk, Domingo Tibadu iza, Hernan Barreneche, B i l l C lark, P eter D uffy, V ic to r Mora, and Jack Leydig, com pletely buried the former standard with a phenomenal 6:33:19-4 clock in g . What is even more amazing is the f a c t that A lvaro M ejia ran on the c lu b 's "B" team, at his own request, because he d id n 't f e e l w e ll. He then proceeded to knock o f f a course record 62:03 f o r the f i r s t le g to put the "B" team about 3 minutes or more ahead. Had M ejia run fo r the "A" team as o r ig in a lly planned, the record would have gone down to 6 :2 9 :4 l!! Whether any team w i l l be able to go th at fa s t in the foreseeable future remains t o be seen, but chances are that the current mark w i l l hold up f o r many a year...m aybe u n til next Olympic year (1976). In ad d ition to M e jia 's f i r s t le g mark (knocking about 2 minutes from Scobey's re c o rd ), the fo llo w in g le g bests were s e t: 2n<^ le g - Domingo Tibaduiza broke John H alb ersta d t's mark w ith a s t e lla r 53:23, about a minute below the old standard; Chris M ille r 's 3rd le g record withstood the attack and stays at 55:57; B i l l Clark was way o f f Mark C o vert's 1970 4th le g b l i t z o f 55:20 ( B i l l ran 57:35); P eter D uffy lowered B i l l K e lly 's e f f o r t to 53:16 (from 54:28); V ic to r Mora destroyed Rich Delgado's old 6th le g mark o f 54:53 by going 52:49; and Jack Leydig ju s t did g et Doug B u tt's lon gest standing mark (54:22) on the f i n a l le g with his 54:05.4. West V a lle y 's "B" Team had m isfortune at the 5th le g when Dan Anderson headed towards Truckee and lo s t 8-9 minutes b efore g e ttin g back on course. They s t i l l managed the second b est scratch time and would have gone under 7 hours as w e ll was i t not f o r the wrong turn. Sandwiched in between the two top scratch teams were two su p er-fast senior aggregates: the NorCal Seniors and the West V a lle y Joggers & S trid e r s . They staged a b a ttle ro y a l & fin ish ed only a b it less than 4 minutes ap art. F ir s t high school team to fin is h was a lso a West V a lle y squ ad ...th ey copped tenth p lace, the same as they did la s t y ea r. ;We d on 't have names on a l l the clubs (names o f in d ivid u als I mean), so w e're ju s t going to l i s t the s p lit s o f a l l fin is h in g teams. HALE STOMPS FIELD AT BOLINAS RUN (August. 20, Bol in a s) - In a la s t minute e f f o r t to keep the race from going on the rocks, the P ierce Point race d ire c to rs moved th e ir race from the regu lar lo c a tio n to a spot north o f B olinas, some 35 m iles away (e s tim a te ). Many o f them blew down and no one r e a lly knows how many were l e f t wandering along the c o a stsid e, not r e a l 足 l y knowing i f there was a race or not. Anyhow, a hardy group o f some 55 fin is h e r s was led by s t e l l a r Tom Hale, seeming to g et stronger with every race.
