Liverpool Watersports Centre is the existing building on the site, and it is part of a charity called Local Solutions. The charity works with disadvantaged groups around Liverpool. The aim of the organisation is to make watersports accessible to everyone. Because of the impact this building has to the local community, I think it would be necessary for the building to be kept and the new building can be seen as an addition to the Watersports Centre as they both are driven by the concept of helping the community. 4

Residential The location of the site is quite significant as it provides two visual aspects of the city, if you look towards the commercial centre, you can see the developed city and the significant monuments which include the Radio Tower, the Anglican Cathedral and the Metropolitan Cathedral. If you look at towards the residential south, you can see the less developed part of Liverpool as well as remaining industrial buildings which give an insight into the heritage of Liverpool. 2021 Portfolio Adil Ahmed

Exercise: The building will include activities that promote physical exercise and this is important as the implementation of these activities will help a person's fitness. The sports related activities include, swimming, yoga, gym etc. This is important for the community as there is not a place providing similar activities in the local area. Therapy: The more privatized part of the building will be the spaces that provide a therapy treatment. The activities include, a spa, sauna, steam rooms and treatment rooms. The benefits spa therapy has to mental health make it important for the building to include these things. Communal: The social aspect of the building can be seen through the implementation of cafes & restaurants. There will also be many spaces throughout the building with seating and views of the city where people can socialise.

Research Centre Weather Or Not The Aim of the project was to design a research centre that will help improve the local biodiversity in the area and this will be done using a biophilic design that includes an open exhibition garden. The building will have 2 main components, upper ground and lower ground where the publicly used building will be separated from the educational building.

Research has shown that environments can increase or reduce stress levels, which will impacts our bodies. We are genetically made to find plants, trees, water, and nature elements engrossing, which makes us feel distracted from any pain or discomfort in our lives. The implementation of nature in my design will improve the mental and physical health of a person in the environment, this will help the general well being of a person and they will feel more comfortable in that environment.
The green infrastructure in and out of the building will be benefitting the overall carbon footprint of the building. The green infrastructure replaces the dark surfaces of buildings with bright green vegetation, making the sunlight get reflected rather than absorbed, this helps cool down the building and reduce the energy needed to cool the building. Also, the process of carbon sequestration happens which is the long-term capture of carbon
The increase in plants and trees around my site will improve the biodiversity in the area. The more biodiversity there is, the stronger an ecosystem is. Biodiversity is important and on the site, there was a lack of it, it is important because plants provide humans with oxygen, they also provide shade, food, construction material, medicine, and even fiber for clothing. The roots from the plants help stop flooding. Also, fungi and animals like worms keep the soil fertile and the water clean.
The area of the site had a lack of variety of plants which made the area dull and not attractive, the implementation of exotic plants will make the environment more of a tourist attraction and will improve the views around the site. The exhibition space in the design will have conditions that will allow exotic plants to grow, this is important as new plants can be introduced that would not have been able to survive in the current environment, this can make the environment unique and improve its value.

Urban Farming Tree Housing The overall aim for my design is to create a low energy building that can provide a continuous stream of fresh food through the self sufficiency of the building and urban farming. The products will be served and sold to the residents and customers so they can have a locally sourced supply of plants that have very important uses

Urban farming is the process of cultivating and distributing food in urban areas. The number of densely populated areas is increasing globally and now more than half the population of the world lives in towns or cities. There is a major lack of farmland and green spaces that grow organic foods in urban areas, this is because they are used by human settlement and infrastructure that doesn’t allow space for it. Because of the lack of space in urban areas, the use of urban farming can be done through the rooftops, so it’s incorporated into the existing environment. The site that the building will sit on is very urban and there is a lack of green spaces where fresh food can be grown. The green roof I want to add in my building will be used to grow vegetables, fruit, and herbs as the benefits here are considerable both in environmental and economic terms. The fresh produce will then be served and sold on the ground floor from a shop dedicated to the rooftop garden. Rooftop farming is a self-sufficient system that uses local resources to run. In this case, rainwater and filtered wastewater from the households is used to water the plants, also, solar energy and the heat generated by the building is used for the plants.

Contemplation Garden Urban Design The aim of the the project was to create a peaceful garden that is used as an escape from the busy environment surrounding it. The white noise from running water assists with taming thoughts and aids meditative practices. Enclosed spaces create a sense of seclusion and privacy.

I initially decided to create three areas in the fabric district to improve the well being and lifestyle for the people that live there, the three areas were for studying, socialising and contemplating. I decided to develop the contemplation space and I have tried to create a peaceful garden that is used as an escape from the busy environment surrounding it. This will give people the chance to reflect on their daily lives and they can use the place to meditate. The many routes into the garden will give the person a sense of a journey showing the contrast in environments, this will be helped by the use of shrubs and an exhibition space which will keep the garden enclosed and private. 40

Building additions:
Unify three spaces with a curved avenue to promote mindfulness / social engagement and contemplation.
Preserve and restore main fabric streets. Remove warehouses and depot to open central space. Cut through unused terrace buildings to create new route.
As well as preserving and restoring some of the historical fabric buildings on the site, New introductions will include internet cafes, studio spaces, a student gym, and contemplation space
A water garden that features a large scale water feature. The white noise from running water assists with taming thoughts and aids meditative practices. Enclosed spaces create a sense of seclusion and privacy .

I have developed a range of skills throughout my university degree that has helped me understand the fundamentals and the essence of Architecture. I enjoy all aspects of the design process from the initial sketches to the final production. I have had to deliver presentations of my designs to classmates and professional architects, which helped me improve my confidence and communication skills. There have been many projects where I worked in a team, where we had to collaboratively work, discuss, and share ideas which improved my teamworking skills. I chose to live away from home and live in another city, which allowed me to become very independent. I had to manage my time well, to make sure that I met deadlines and submissions. I also had to organise my finances strictly to make sure I had enough to fund resources for my studies as well as general living costs.

Additional Information
Customer Assistant, Tesco June 2017 – present
I have enjoyed studying my undergraduate architecture degree thoroughly and the skills I’ve learnt, I would like to carry forward in practice. Aside from studying, my passion for architecture stems from my love for travelling and exploring. I intend to travel to many different countries and get an insight into a range of cultures. I also spend a lot of time producing graphical artwork and editing photos. I always try to push my skills to the next level and learn more techniques that can help me excel in my architecture work.
I’ve been working at Tesco as a customer assistant to help gain experience in a work environment. In this role, I undertake tasks such as serving customers, restocking shelves as well as completing people’s online orders. To my credit, I am always punctual, and my attendance is exemplary, traits that are necessary for any good employee. The role has required me to be responsible, independent, and have the ability to think on my feet in a fast-paced environment.
