Title and Outline
Title: The STARGIRL Magazine Issue 1: Accessories of the Past
Slogan: A Trip Down the Fashion Memory Lane
Description: A fashion magazine to redefine girlhood through 2000s Barbie accessories and sustainable fashion
Background / Rationale
The STARGIRL Magazine started in the summer of 2023, when I went back to my hometown in Indonesia for the holidays. While I was cleaning up my childhood bedroom, I found a bunch of Barbie accessories that I forgot existed, such as Barbie tops, trousers, shoes, bags and many more. Dressing up my Barbie dolls as a child is one of the main reasons why I am into fashion right now, hence rediscovering these pieces brings me a lot of joy. As I grow older, I have developed an interest in sustainable fashion, which I mainly participate through thrift shopping, up cycling existing clothes and even creating my own accessories. Therefore, through this project, these old Barbie accessories will also be used as a contribution to sustainable fashion.
Key Influences / References
The STARGIRL Magazine is inspired by the topic of girlhood. Through a definition I found online, girlhood is defined to be a state or time of being a girl. However, to me, girlhood is an experience of a lifetime. My main sources of inspirations come from female creatives whose work focuses on girls, like Greta Gerwig with her newly released Barbie movie, Sofia Coppola with The Virgin Suicides, Marie Antoinette and Priscilla and many more. I chose these female creatives because they have successfully redefined girlhood that speak to different age groups. They have inspired me to redefine girlhood through Barbie accessories and sustainable fashion.
Initial Concepts / Ideas for Outcomes
The STARGIRL Magazine will be documented as a fashion magazine with articles and photoshoot surrounding girlhood, 2000s popular culture and Barbie accessories. Every process will be taken with sustainability in mind, such as only wearing thrifted clothing pieces or from local businesses, only contributing with fellow schoolmates to support each other’s project, only using recycled papers for the printing and many more.

Audience Research: Customer Profiles
To set the target audience for the magazine, I conducted an audience research in a form of a customer profile. These customer profiles are needed to understand the consumer behaviour of the intended audience. I had this idea after presenting the concept of the magazine to the Fashion and Media Marketing lecturer, Kirsty, combined with the branding workbook created by my mentor, Christina from Brand Biscuit. I categorised these profiles into three: primary, secondary and tertiary. These are the questions to build these customer profiles:

How old are they?
Who do they identify themselves as?
What do they do?

Process:
Work in Progress
Process: Cover
To settle with the final design of the magazine cover, there were three steps in the process. The first step was actually taken during a lasercut printing workshop, where I decided to use this time to play around with my cover. In this workshop, I was given two sheets of cardboard paper, one in orange and another in pink. The main thing about using this workshop to develop my cover is to have an idea of how the font and colours will look like in real life.
As a pen and paper person, the next step is to play around with the lasercut prints by sketching them out. From the prints, I came out with sixteen different thumbnails for me to choose. Of course, I ended up choosing only one of them and spoiler alert, the final design does not look exactly the same as the sketch. However, these sketches really help me because then, I can refer back to them for layout purposes for other parts of the magazine.
Last but not least, the final design. I decided to create a pattern out of these types. Since I was just playing around, there is no particular reason as to why I ended up with this cover. Coincidentally, the final one was the one my peers voted the most, the reason is it made them curious about what the publication is about and it can also be a coffee table accessory, which aligns with the concept of my issue: Accessories of the Past

Adinda Nareswari
Date and time: Friday, May 10th 2024
Concept:
To explore the relationship between two sisters on pursuing their dreams in fashion
Poses:
For this photoshoot, the poses that I have planned for the photoshoot are different from the actual outcomes because the photoshoot was supposed to be done with other people. I was nearing deadline, so I just decided to use whatever thumbnails I have and direect them from there. Fortunately, Anya and Dulcie were very easy to work with. I am also really satisfied with how the photos turned out even though I was under pressure.

Photoshoot: Girl Dinner
Model:

Model)
Photographer:
Poppy Stroud
Date and time: Tuesday, April 30th 2024
Concept:
To explore the relationship between girls and materialistic things. Inspired by an infamous quote by Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City: When I first moved to New York and was totally broke, sometimes I bought Vogue instead of dinner. I feel like it fed me more.
Poses:
For this photoshoot, I changed the concept last minute because I felt like the original one was too similar to She’s a Digital Girl, in a Critical World. The thumbnails I have here are very quick sketches, but they essentially give an idea of how us, or at least most girls, think about materialistic things like it’s the food we’re gonna eat for dinner.
