Prepping skin
your for
spring
Spring is here,
with summer right around the corner! Time to get ready to show more skin — shorter skirts, shorts, flip-flops and plenty of time spent out in the sun.
1. Exfoliate The first step is to get rid of dry, dead skin. Yes, we all have dead skin cells on our bodies. Begin by choosing an all-natural, gentle exfoliator. Avoid products containing plastic microbeads, as these are harmful to both our bodies and to the environment. Some reliable, all-natural exfoliators include oats, sugar, salt, and almond meal. Be sure to exfoliate only on wet skin! Be gentle and limit exfoliation to once or twice weekly to avoid irritation.
2. Moisturize When dead skins cells have been eliminated, it’s time to replenish the natural oils that have been stripped from your skin. This requires moisturizing and more moisturizing! Use face and bodyspecific moisturizers, since facial skin is far more sensitive. To maximize their benefits and allow deep penetration, use moisturizers after you shower and before you get into bed. Try our Herbacin Body Lotion with regenerating argan oil, aloe vera, camomile extracts and skin-active vitamins A and E. It not only provides intensive moisture for tighter and firmer skin, but also improves elasticity. Your skin will feel silky-smooth in no time.
3. Protect Since you’ll be spending more time out in the sun, it’s necessary to protect your skin from harmful UV rays! Choose a natural sunscreen and make a habit of applying it daily, whether you plan to spend time outdoors that day or not. Protecting your skin with an SPF 15 – 30 sunscreen will help you avoid skin cancer, painful sunburns and wrinkles.
Now that your skin is prepped, get out and enjoy that warm weather!

HEAL
your heels SANDAL SEASON IS COMING. TAKE THESE FOUR SIMPLE STEPS TO REPAIR CRACKED OR SCALY HEELS
1. PUMICE STONE After bathing or showering, use your pumice stone to gently rub any dry, hard places on your feet and heels. The small but mighty pumice stone quickly rids your feet of dead or callused skin, leaving your heels and toes soft and smooth.
3. LOTION/SOCKS After intensive scrubbing, it’s time to emphasize moisturizing. For best results, apply a heavier lotion or cream to deeply penetrate dry heels. Before the lotion sets in, slip on a pair of socks to lock that moisture in for hours! If lotion and socks isn’t your thing, look for aloe-infused socks!
2. FOOT SCRUB If your feet need extra help after that pumice pedicure, treat them to a quality foot scrub. Our Herbacin Foot Peeling contains Himalayan salt for exfoliating dead skin as well as almond oil for deep moisturizing— two benefits in one soothing product!
4. CURE THOSE CUTICLES Healing our heels doesn’t mean we should neglect our toes! Show some love to your cuticles with an oil-based cuticle and nail oil to soften your toes and ready your nails for a fresh spring color.
VOILA! Your feet are ready for sandal season!

Caffeine Fix for
your skin
Caffeine can do a lot more for you than simply giving you energy in the morning. Not only is moderate caffeine intake good for your body, it’s also good for your skin! If your skin is feeling tired and dull, your skincare regimen could get a jump-start from these suggestions.
FOR YOUR BODY Instead of letting coffee grounds go to waste, start saving them! Add a small amount of olive oil to used grounds to make an all-natural exfoliating coffee scrub! The caffeine in the grounds will stimulate your skin while fighting cellulite. The olive oil, combined with the texture of the grounds, will exfoliate and moisturize.
FOR LATTE LOVERS: Simple Soy latte (4 ingredients) Blend ½ cup of your regular coffee with ½ cup vanilla soy/almond milk. Add a few dashes of cinnamon, and 3 tsp. of vanilla extract. Blend until foamy and enjoy!
INSIDE AND OUT Coffee can benefit both the inside and the outside of your body, containing essential elements such as riboflavin, pantothenic acid, manganese, potassium, magnesium and niacin. If you’re not up for putting coffee on your face, treat yourself to a delicious beverage instead.
FOR YOUR FACE Coffee grounds can also make an effective exfoliating facemask. Mix a few tablespoons of used grounds with half a cup of oats and one mashed banana. This mask will serve as an ultra-hydrator and exfoliator! Apply, leave for 10-15 minutes and remove with warm water. You’ll see dark circles under your eyes vanish. 9

Test the makeup you will be wearing on your wedding day. This will not only give you time to experiment with colors and styles, it will also prevent any sudden irritation caused by new makeup. If the colors are not quite right, or the new foundation gives you a few blemishes, you will have plenty of time to recover from the blemishes and try alternative products.
If you’re not already committed to a skin care routine, now is the time to start. It takes several weeks for skin care products to achieve maximum effectiveness. Starting now, your routine should include: removing makeup before workouts and bedtime, and investing in a quality skin care cleansing line.
Plan on tanning? Start slowly. Use a more natural tanning lotion that darkens your skin gradually, rather than a harsh one that might leave your skin darker than you would like. If something goes wrong, an early tanning regimen will give you flexibility to achieve that naturallooking glow.

weeks prior You are what you eat. If you’ve succumbed to nervous bad habits of unhealthy eating, it’s time to get healthy and cautious. Your skin is a major reflection of your dietary intake. If you’re not eating enough, or eating foods poor in nutrients, your skin can look dull and tired. Be sure to include plenty of greens and veggies in your diet as well as essential fatty acids.
4
weeks prior It’s facial time. Try starting a once a week facial to give your skin some extra love and care. Not only will this keep your skin hydrated, it will also help you take the time to relax.

weeks prior Protect your skin. If SPF isn’t included in your brand new skin care routine, it should be. Go for an all-natural sunscreen to avoid harmful ingredients found in conventional sunscreens. Apply daily, whether you plan on going outdoors or not.
2
weeks prior Sleep. Nothing reflects as badly on skin as lack of sleep. All your preparations may have you wound really tight, so go for a massage, try some aromatherapy, listen to soothing music, meditate…whatever helps you relax and get a full nights sleep.

weeks prior The home stretch! No need to panic, just stay hydrated. Skin is an accurate indicator of our level of hydration. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the days prior to your wedding to help your skin look flawless on your special day.
Of course, the most essential part of this process is to not worry! This is your day and you should celebrate and enjoy every moment! 15

Stretch it out
JOINTS AND MUSCLES One way of ensuring that your joints and muscles are working properly is to stretch them. This not only lubricates your joints, it also allows you to focus on target areas that need strengthening.
POSTURE Poor posture in common in most individuals. But poor posture is more than just looking uncomfortable while sitting. Extreme side effects of poor posture include: bad digestion due to weak stomach muscles, head and neck aches, and difficulty losing excess fat around the waist line. Stretching and practicing good posture can improve all of these problems while strengthening core and back muscles.
According to a study done by UC Davis, stretching can help benefit your flexibility, posture, energy levels and mood! Plus, it can also aid in injury prevention. So before you start skipping stretching at the gym, read more on how stretching is the most beneficial part of your workout!
BLOOD FLOW Just like other types of exercise, stretching stimulates blood flow. In the process of stretching, your elevated heart rate increases blood flow to your brain while providing better circulation in your entire body.
INNER MASSAGE Your outer shell isn’t the only thing that needs a massage from time to time. Stretching and practicing yoga are ways of massaging your inner shell as well! Certain stretches and movements are made to massage and strengthen digestive enzymes, promoting a healthy digestive system.
INCREASED ENERGY Along with increasing blood flow, stretching can increase energy levels immensely. Increased heart rate and blood flow to the brain can make you feel more alert in no time! Try skipping the extra coffee in the morning and do a few stretches instead, followed by plenty of water. You’ll notice the difference.

Unplugging & Getting Outside
With the weather getting warmer, it’s time to unplug yourself from those electronics and get outside! According to a study undertaken by Digital Trends, Americans are spending 4.7 hours on their phones per day. If you factor in 8 hours of sleep in 24 hours, this means we’re spending a third of our day glued to our phones. That’s just not healthy!
21
This season we want to focus on unplugging and enjoying what’s around us. Here’s what we can do:
Set aside time Instead of just saying we’re going to unplug, let’s make it happen. Schedule a certain amount of time each day to turn the phone off, as well as unplugging from other electronics. If we make this an everyday part of our schedule, we’re more likely to make it happen and to stick with it. Even 30 minutes is a good start.
Leave your phone at home If you do need to bring your phone along, take advantage of airplane mode. This way, you have your phone if there’s an emergency, but you’re also able to focus on what’s around you. So get outside, blow off the winter dust and cobwebs, and enjoy some changes of scenery!
Airplane mode When you’re not working, head outside and leave your phone at home. Whether it’s going out in the yard for a few minutes or going on a long hike, leaving your phone at home will eliminate a major source of distractions, allowing you to see things you’ve never noticed.
Q and A
with Joey Kelly
We had the opportunity recently to sit down with endurance athlete Joey Kelly. Joey has recently become our brand Ambassador for the Camouflage Men’s line. We asked him about his lifestyle and how he was able to compete so successfully over the years. Q. How important is living a more natural lifestyle to you?
Q. Do you prefer to listen to music while running or does that serve as a distraction for you?
It is very important to live healthy in keeping with nature. It helps me stay in tune with my body.
Running with music is motivational for me. It is a good exchange.
Q. What are some of your favorite hobbies?
Q. What’s the hardest part of running for you?
Sports for sure, but I also love to be in natural surroundings. And good food, I do enjoy eating!
Keeping to a training plan – it’s not always easy to keep on track for the next challenge. But when you’ve finished your training, you’re always proud of yourself.
Q. When did you start running competitively? In 1996 I finished my first triathlon. Since then I’ve run over a hundred marathons and competed in endurance events all over the globe.
Q. What do your meals look like on the day of a race? 2-3 hours before a race I prefer to eat really light. Just fruits and a little bit of bread.
Q. How do you stay motivated in the midst of a run?
Q. How important is stretching as a competitive runner?
Motivation is a very personal thing. For me I have to define a precise goal for staying motivated and it can be different for every race.
Stretching is very important. Not only does it help in achieving more strength and power, but also to prevent injuries. Never skip stretching, it can make all the difference to your performance.
Q. Do you have any tips for people who run recreationally, but want to start getting into races? The easiest way to get into races is starting with a short distance race, probably 5K or 10K. From there you can build up your races bit by bit to a half marathon and then to a marathon.
Q. Do you think men are just as interested as women in having good skin? Yes, having a good skin is a very fundamental thing. Your outer appearance has a lot to do with your internal well-being. For me, it’s a sign of good health.
Joey Kelly has finished over 100 marathons and has participated in endurance competitions – including events such as Ultramarathon, Ironman Triathlon or Tough-GuyRace, all over the world. He is the only person to have finished in each of the available eight Ironman competitions in the years 1998 and 1999.
