GET YOUR SPARKLE ON 4

inside & out‌ Let your inner sparkle come out this holiday season with foods that will make you glow, workout routines that will make you shine, and skin care regimens that will make your skin luminous.

. . .diet, exercise, skin

5

EAT RIGHT

...get glowing

It is the holiday season, so a little over indulgence is allowed. However, consider satisfying your cravings with healthier options or smaller portions. Begin your grocery shopping in the produce section. Fill your cart with fiber and antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables such as raspberries, blueberries, broccoli, kale, spinach, snow peas and carrots. These foods contain substantial amounts of antioxidants and beta-carotene, which help to prevent cell damage and slow down aging. Fuel your body and rebuild essential collagen by consuming proteins and essential fats; these will keep you satisfied and moisturize your skin from the inside out. Then, treat yourself to foods high in omega 3’s like avocados, salmon and unsalted nuts.

6

WORK IT OUT ...feel great

The essential rule about workouts is very simple…do something you enjoy or you will do nothing at all. The best holiday gift to yourself is making a workout plan and sticking with it, spending this holiday season feeling good inside and out! It’s not about losing weight—though that’s always a bonus-- but about feeling energized and stress-free. Different workouts achieve varied results depending on your specific goals. For flexibility and healing, Yoga or Pilates can work wonders for both mind and body. Let your inner dancer shine with Zumba, a perfect balance of cardio and fun that mixes body weight exercises into a cardio-dance workout. If focusing on building muscles and strength is your thing, invest in free weights and you can shape up anywhere! Sweat and shine wherever you feel comfortable and happy--in the park, in your living room, or even on the beach. 7

RAMP IT UP

...for luminous skin

Once you have that inner glow going, make sure it shines through to the outside. A moisture-rich skincare routine is essential during the holidays to ensure smooth, clear, luminous skin right through to the New Year! Cold weather coupled with overheated environments, late nights and excessive alcohol can result in dry, chapped lips, scaly patches, flaking skin, acne breakouts and more.

Always remove makeup. No matter how late—or early—you prepare for bed, be sure to cleanse your skin of makeup. Failure to take this crucial step causes clogged pores, premature wrinkling, acne and breakdown of healthy collagen in your skin—causing even more wrinkles. For a simple quick solution, use makeup removal face wipes to save time, as well as your skin. Sleep is the best, because when you’re sleep-deprived your body produces more of the stress hormone cortisol. Elevated levels of cortisol can lead to increased tension and inflammation in the body, hurting your skin’s quality. So, pack in some extra zzzzz’s.

8

Keep hydrated. Dehydration has been shown to be linked to blemishes. Drinking plenty of water decreases the concentration of oil on the skin, promoting a healthy texture. Sufficient hydration makes skin look plumper and minimizes wrinkles. Celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston and Ellen Pompeo credit drinking lots of water as the secret to their supple, glowing, camera-ready skin. Moisture .In winter, humidity levels plummet and dry air can dehydrate your skin and strip it of the lipids essential to the skin’s protective outer layer. This allows irritants to enter more easily, causing redness and flaking. Dry skin emphasizes wrinkles, so, if you don’t hydrate before applying base makeup, the lines and imperfections in your skin will look much worse. For best results, wait about five minutes before using foundation so your moisturizer or primer can be properly absorbed. Pamper your skin with a luxurious pure 24K gold facemask. These masks contain colloidal gold, caffeine and peridot, a combination that maintains collagen levels, minimizes aging, plumps and hydrates cells, and inhibits the breakdown of elastin in your skin.

Cheers to a sparkly holiday season! 9

Go Green

MOVE OVER KALE ‘Tis the season of comfort foods, traditional family recipes, and overindulgence! So there’s no better time to pack in the greens for dietary balance. Get a head start this holiday with healthy greens to keep your digestive system working right. Vary your greens, and put kale on the back burner (temporarily) to give other glorious greens a chance to shine!

Alkaloid Buildup It’s not that we’re tired of kale—our concern relates to a condition called “alkaloid buildup.” When consuming raw, leafy greens, we’re ingesting small amounts of toxins that occur naturally in the plant. The purpose of these toxins is to ensure that the plant species doesn’t go extinct by making it inedible to other animals. After several years of consuming the same dark leafy greens, it’s possible for those toxins to build up in your body, resulting in thyroid problems including fatigue and nausea. While alkaloid buildup doesn’t happen all that frequently, we still want to be doing everything we can to avoid it! 10

Some Green Swaps to Try! FOR SMOOTHIES: Substitute the kale and spinach in your morning green smoothie for another dark green leaf like Swiss chard. Add a banana and you won’t be able to tell which green you’re drinking! FOR SALADS: With just a hint of tartness and spiciness in the leaves, arugula is a refreshing addition to your salad. FOR SOUPS AND STIR FRY: Cabbage and collard greens lose their tough texture when simmered in soup. For stir-fry try some flavorful bok choy! 11

the pressure‌ The holidays always intensify stress levels. As much as we look forward to this time of year, it can become overwhelming. Shopping, buying and giving gifts, traveling, visiting relatives-the list goes on and on. As pressure builds and anxiety mounts, a supposedly enjoyable season can make us crazy! 12

5 tips to stress less: 1. Plan Ahead Even with a late start, having a plan will keep you organized. Make lists, have some extra gifts on hand, check travel schedules, organize your holiday outfits, get your hair and nails done a week early and squeeze in a relaxing massage!

2. Get enough sleep Try not to stray too far from your regular sleep schedule. Yes, there will be late nights, but staying up watching movies, then sleeping in until noon is only going to make getting back into the swing of things—and keeping energy levels consistent-- ten times harder.

3. Easy on the alcohol It’s the holidays! CHEERS!! Enjoy your wine with dinner and your special spiced eggnog, but remember that engaging in excessive drinking isn’t the way to reduce stress. No one wants to feel groggy and hungover while little ones are squealing over gifts and adults are having loud conversations. If you have overdone it, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

4. Exercise With the abundance of treats and overindulgences during the holidays, getting in some regular exercise will really benefit you. That doesn’t necessarily mean hitting your usual 5 a.m. gym wake-up call-- it is the holidays after all-- but heading out for a run or a trip to the yoga studio could help alleviate stress and muscle tension.

5. Place less emphasis on gifts. Placing too much emphasis on gifts can diminish the most memorable and special aspects of the holidays. Try focusing less on the gift-giving and more on spending time with family and loved ones. Time is one of the greatest gifts you can ever give.

DITCH NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

...Live with Purpose, All Year Long

2017 is going to be the year without

new gym memberships, to-do lists or diets. This is the year to start living with purpose. The typical pattern for resolutions: make them on January 1st, stick to them for a few months (if that), then start to slack off on all those good intentions. Halfway through the year we’re disappointed in ourselves for not keeping the promises we made, and we end up thinking “There’s always next year” to compensate for the guilt we feel. 14

This year, it’s time to take control and start living life the way you want to, with purpose and joy.

One of the biggest problems with resolutions is the feeling that you need to wait until a new year to start things fresh, with a clean slate. But imagine living with purpose and changing your mindset – when you want to start something in your life, instead of waiting to make a resolution,

Just do it.

15

16

So, why do we make resolutions in the first place? Resolutions come in many shapes and forms. In some cases, a resolution is a way to break a bad habit. Whether that bad habit be: smoking, unhealthy eating, not exercising regularly, staying in a bad relationship, or not spending time doing the things we love, bad habits are hard to break. Instead of making a resolution to quit bad habits, cut them out of your life one at a time and replace them with new, good habits. Get started by going through your every day habits, and write down whether these habits are benefitting you, or hurting you.

How can I tell if my habits are beneficial? Think, does this habit make you feel good, always? Sure, having several alcoholic drinks a night might make you feel good in the moment, but the next day it’s likely you’ll feel: depressed, dehydrated, have a headache or stomachache, and you would have spent money on something that’s already gone. If you find yourself with habits that only make you feel good sometimes, then it’s probably not benefitting you long term.

Does this habit inspire positive thoughts and behaviors? Make sure the habits you’ve cultivated are benefitting your body and your mind. Some people love going for a 5 a.m. run every morning, but this might not be the best habit for you. While running is a great exercise, if it’s blossoming resentful and negative thoughts then it’s only benefitting you half as much as something else could. Focus on developing a habit that you, and only you, benefit from.

Does this habit enrich my life? It’s very easy to fall into bad work habits. You’re busy, you have continuous deadlines, so you work longer and harder, thereby burning yourself out, depriving yourself of sleep, and losing concentration. You find yourself working more just to keep up! Make some changes by organizing your priorities, taking short breaks, and doing something you enjoy each day.

1. Homemade Cookies This is definitely a gift that won’t go to waste! Find out their favorite flavors and whip up a small batch of cookies to last them once the leftovers are gone. 22

For convenience and ease of storage, our favorite is the flat top flower stopper from `www.charlesviancin.com.

8. Coloring Books For the kid in you...In the winter months, it’s easy to get bored. Satisfy the kid in everyone and hide a mini coloring book in their stocking. Adult coloring books are great for stress relief, anxiety and relaxation in general .

9. For Pets Don’t forget about a gift for your pet! Grab a few of their favorite treats, a squeaky toy or a brand new water bowl to pamper your favorite fury family member this Christmas. Better yet, let them open their own stocking and sniff out the all the treats.
