Project
Centre for Architectural Research was a result of a study on Architectural Research and the current state of Architectural Research in different Institutions of Architecture, an attempt to bridge the various types of Architectural Research involved a study of different components of AR and the bodies that are involved with them, primarily Schools, Offices and Research After looking into these bodies and understanding the existing pattern in which research takes place in these bodies, a new module for research was created by taking bits and pieces from the other bodies and creating a new platform for research.

Dissemination of Architectural Research Architecture Student Architecture Students are involved with theoretical parts of architectural research, they push the boundaries of the syntax, this research stays with the academia and does not breach into the professional practice. Architects who associate themselves to academia are involved with the research that happens in this bubble.
Women comprise of 60% of architecture students i.e., 18,000 graduates every year. There is a potential to cater to these graduates who could be making huge shifts in Architectural Research.

Architecture is experienced by the general public by their interaction with the city, but the awareness of what architects are capable of can be achieved only through exposure to the realm of architecture,
Building Research Scientist Research stays within the CBRI and online and does not reach the community of architects. Research is often short sighted with no room for hypothetical experimentation. Number of architects in CBRI in 1970 - 35 Number of architects in CBRI in 2015 – 2 Number of students involved in building research in 5 years is 0
Architect A study of offices shows that research is an integral part of every project and there is a need to allow space for experimental research in offices. Research through Design needs to be documented and the professional practice needs to connect with the academic research.

Choosing a Site The Metropolitan city of Chennai was chosen for the modular approach to CFAR, The Site was chosen by mapping out the various Architecture Schools, Offices, Libraries and CSRI and an appropriate plot which would cater to the module was selected in Perungudi.
The Site is located in the southern part of the City adjacent to OMR , the site is characterized by a lush green landscape . the Site is of close proximity to the MRTS and 15km from the airport. The Site offers 65 Acres of Land which can be used for future development,
The Site belongs to the Central Government and a part of the site is used as a wireless monitoring Camp, which still leaves most of the site free for CFAR , The Site is flanked by Perungudi Lake in the South and a dense residential neighborhood in the north and the East which are mostly squatter settlements.

There are two main access to the Site, the northern one is used as the primary access. A central axis is created along the existing path used in the site which connects the two diversity in the building heights of the commercial offices and the settlements show the sensitivity of the site which calls for an introverted design.
The dense vegetation constraints the design so the important tree clusters were identified and were used to define the zoning and the circulation loops were identified and the existing green nature of the site needed to be retained.

The build able regions of the site was identified and the trees were analyzed based on girth and age. Then clusters of trees were identified as focal points and the shrubs and weeds were removed.
Vertical Steel Columns are erected along the vertices’s of the grid and a horizontal beam is laid connecting the Columns,
The Primary axis is identified and the circulation loops are weaved into the tree clusters.

A new module for research in architecture was achieved by separation the bodies involved with the research and clustering them into 6 forms from action to more experimental based research, the design called for a flexible built up space and the chosen site provided challenges but also opportunities to allow an environment in which the built and unbuilt blurred together created one big introverted campus. The design encourages interaction on all front each cluster consists of classrooms, offices and labs. 16

The external breakaway spaces form floating islands which connects the seven research sectors, They also share spaces by bringing these different architects, academicians together the center creates a think tank for interdisciplinary research and the constantly changing needs of the architecture Community and also bridges the gap created within the different bodies of research. The building itself as porous as it is with the blurring of transparency and breaking of hierarchy of built spaces showcases architecture in its purest form, on the drawing board. 21

kodaikanal . India A National Defense Academy for Cadets coming straight out of school into an environment of discipline and rigorous simulated training. A master plan for their various activities and a detailed design of the Academic sector was the brief. The project will provide a series of innovative spaces for research, teaching, and learning, as well as informal spaces for staff and students to interact, relax, or study in between formal classes.

Activity Mapping The cadets have rigid military routine ,by mapping out the activities they perform during the day we find the relationship between the spaces and the required proximity required in the Masterplan. The cadets spend a lot of their training in the Academic Zone and in their Quarters. They spend their mornings in the training ground and spend their afternoons in the sports area. The Quarter master,Canteen and Armory are also on their regular visits. The Training Officers have their own Quarters and the higher officers will host their offices in the Command Center at the highest point of the Site.

Masterplan The site is located in SHENBAGANUR in KODAIKANAL. Shenbaganur is famous for its natural scape and near by mudumalai forest which comes under reserve forest area. Masinagudi offers plenty of scope for tourists at the moment. Though there is no institutes proposed as on date, Masinagudiv exposes lots of scope for a campus on a hilly terrain, that focuses on Design and crafts development. The total area of the site is 110 acres.

The Academic Block is planned as a three tier terraced plan with roof forming the floor plane of the next tier, the lowest tier starts at level 173 and the second and third tier are at level 176 and 179. the block are punctured to allow natural lighting and cross ventilation of the academic blocks. the three tiers allow a visual interaction of the senior cadets with the junior cadets.

The formal characteristics of the NDA is retained in the Academic zones, by using exposed concrete , the design chars a brutalistic raw aesthetic which reflect the aspiring Cadets the formal horizontal and vertical lines created by the built form reinforce the rigidity and formality that defines an NDA. 33

The Terraced tiers open into the landscape, the rough exposed concrete is complimented with timber columns and louvers and with large glazed openings which allow a panoramic view of the site and the sunken spaced have large vertical punctures aloownig light and natural ventilation on the sides. 35

CHENNAI . India Chennai city is undergoing expansion with neighborhoods Sprouting in the outskirts and there is need for basic health infrastructure at each neighborhood level to cater emergency and epidemic situations. In context to this, a 40 bedded health care center is proposed at Mount Ponamalle high road, catering to Ramapuram and Mugalivakam.These are densely packed residential areas with a need for health care.

The vehicular and pedestrian zones are separated,this allows the hospital to be pedestrian friendly.
The vertical zoning is places along the three axis forming the emergency wing, in and out patient wing, the diagnostic and maternal ward wing.
A main axis and three secondary axis are identified for the three wings, A central courtyard separate the two wings.
The three wings are punctured to allow views into the central courtyard and the exterior vegetation . The corridor spaces are treated as semi solid spaces by using glass and timber louvers.

The Health center is wrapped with a false facade of timber louvers that removes the classic Grey depressing image of a hospital that pricks peoples anxiety,it also allows semi partial privacy while allowing light to seep through. Long strips of glazed curtain walls are used in corridor spaces which open up the common area and waiting spaces which are usually closed boxes are a stereotypical image of a hospital.

India Old Mahabalipuram Road is an IT Corridor that developed into a six lane IT Hub in the year 2008 ,a study was done in 2015 to understand the fundamental elements that weave together to form the urban fabric of this corridor. The study was divided into four stretches,my groups was the first stretch extending from Tidal Park to Perungudi Toll Gate,

OMR has a lack of open space that can be used as a public spaces, the threshold spaces often act as public spaces,NIFT has a service lane with an extended pedestrian pathway which acts as a public space. At the Thiruvanmiyur Junction a monument called the flamethrower has been constructed to act as a public space but has failed due to inaccessibility.
In the first stretch OMR has four Foot over bridges which has failed in its function as most people prefer to jay walk across the median,making foot-over areas a accident prone zones. due to being unlit at night they act as unsafe areas for pedestrians.

The Main public transport that is used to commute is the bus along with share autos,The bus stands have failed in design to cater to the users as most of the people stand on the road or after the bus stand.
The Service lanes act as threshold spaces and are often used for parking and hawkers also found near the IT parks,the commercial spaces often spill out into the service lane and act as a potential public spaces if articulated properly.

OMR was initially a two lane road with predominantly residential and industrial buildings, the road was the main connecting road from Chennai to Mahabalipuram. The Buckingham canal which is parallel to OMR was the mode of transportation till 1960,

The IT sector begins to take shape along the corridor,the large vacant lands begin to develop rapidly into glass box IT sectors and this is soon followed by an increase in demand for residential causing a spike in the adjusant lands of OMR.

Tiruvanmiyur junction is one of the busiest nodes along OMR, traffic is found to bottleneck during rush hours,a foot-over bridge connects the MRTS to the Tidal Park.

The IT corridor project phase 1 comes to a completion,, the influx in the development of IT buildings leaves a desperate need for basic infrastructure to catch up, leaving most o the residential plots left vacant due to lack of services. 48

Mapping OMR Landmarks
The character of OMR is provided by its landmarks,the various buildings and monuments along the stretch which. The prominent landmarks are NIFT,The MRTS,SRP tools ,Kanjanjavadi Temple,Tool Gate.
Landmarks are physically elements which one cannot enter but along OMR we find landmarks being spaces of important cultural value and with time various spaces have identified themselves as landmarks.
Pedestrian Network
The Pedestrian walkway has a series of blockages and the walkways are not wheelchair-accessible, the service lanes are often treated as a secondary road and as a parking lot constraining the free movement of pedestrian traffic.
The Pedestrian realm is found to be vibrant during certain parts of the day,concentrating along the threshold spaces of the commercial fronts, there is a potential for cycle lanes in the service road which could in turn reduce the traffic that bottle necks along the road. 49

The toll gate is the last junction on the study, it consists of 11 bays for 4 wheelers , a school is found near this junction without proper pedestrian pathway near this junction, children are found walking in line of traffic.

The City of Chennai has developed its IT hubs along OMR creating a need for the urban charchter to be safe and vibrant urban stretch,the study showed potential for its development, some of th emajor issues that hinder its development is the congestion during rush hours and the lack of pedestrian friendly frontage,there is a possibility to bring about densification with a diverse community by connecting the unused urban spaces and by making the roads accessible to everyone including disabled users,there is a potential for the introduction of a cycle path and vehicular free pedestrian zones,another potential is by using spaces that are not active during the night to light up and enrich the street life of the IT sector.

CHENNAI . India A Settlement to be designed on a rotating disc conceptually that personifies “ Dynamic Architecture� which promises to start a new era of built form of buildings in motion. Looking beyond the semantics of such architecture, this conception aims to rationalize and conceptualize. This project was shortlisted for the Zonal NASA Convention Trophy,The design was a Utopian settlement that revolved around the idea of buildings in motion.

Masterplan
The site comprises of a number of small rotating disks. These disks are made up of large hexagons which combine to form a circle. The hexagons are placed edge-to-edge. The base of these settlement disks are held down by screw piles which make up the foundation.

The Masterplan consists of six type of rotating pad with different function in each, this Utopian module allowed the built form to be adaptable and flexible, detachable and reattach able, so that the community had the ability to re-adapt and reinterpret its cultural aspirations with time.
Farming And Agriculture
Water and Waste Mangement
The discs on top of the existing natural features have been given the function of farming and cultivation of crops.
The water reservoir is located at the center of the city to allow the treated fresh water radially and from a high point to is distributed to the lower circumference.
Residential Cluster The residential cluster is divided into two, north and south residence cluster maintaining the axis created by the main road of the existing site.
Commercial Cluster
Institutional Cluster Institutional buildings and government offices are kept at the center of the city, this cluster is a non rotating cluster. This acts as the nucleus of the master plan. This cluster forms the core of the city dictating the running of the settlement.
Cultural Cluster The cultural cluster has been designed around an open air theater,The hexagonal units have an elevated walkway along the roof.
The commercial cluster is kept in proximity to the entry to the site to allow trade from the outside, it is also positioned to close to the port to allow trade through the sea.

The buildings in this settlement are modular temporary, easy to build structures that are entirely prefabricated and built on site based on the needs of the user.
The user puts up six piles on the vertex and sets his prefabricated ground beam. The user finds six vertices’s on the hexagonal grid system to construct his multi functional modular unit.

Wall Panel Typology
Building Elements
Wall panel panels are clip on panels that can be chosen based on the climatic need creating a climatically adapting building in motion. The panels are pre fabricated and clipped on site.
Roof Typology Modularizing the roof of buildings allows each module different insulation,space,energy and ventilation according to the function below.
Dual axis tracking is typically used to orient a mirror and redirect sunlight but the mechanism can be integrated with solar panels The building being in rotating motion allows the solar panel to track the sun and allowing a reduced solar gain yet bringing in indirect sunlight from the back.
A screw pile system allows a temporary yet stable structure for the hexagonal grid. The ground beam on the pile has an attached hydraulic jack with protects the building from differential movement and also allowing a small rise of the structure in case of flooding. 57

CHENNAI . India A Interior renovation of ST.Thomas Mar Thoma Syrian church, the project involved a design of a new Altar, False ceiling and new wiring for the church. I was involved with the Design development,Visualization and Site coordination for this project. The False ceiling was three bays of barrel vaults with gypsum boards and lit with golden cove lighting,a bay with varnished timber beams complemented the golden arches. The softwares used in this project are AutoCAD, Sketchup and Thea Rendering.

Kerala . India Muziris was an ancient seaport and urban center in Kerala, a part of the spice route that was found to be of great archaeological value. The Heritage project funded by Kerala Tourism Board. The project identifies th potential heritage buildings in the little town of muziris which used to be an ancient port along the Spice route. Benny Kuriakose has been the lead conservation consultant. I was a part of a team that spent a month in Muziris ,I was a part of various parts of the projects. I lead a graphic design team , We identified the potential nodes for Road signage and also signage for 15 heritage buildings.

A conditional assessment of Cheraman Juma Masjid, the oldest Juma Masjid in India.

Identifying the Way finding experience the tourists would take to experience the heritage museums.
The major nodal points in Muziris were documented and we designed and proposed the Road Signage
Kottapuram Fort is one the excavation site that brought to light the importance of Muziris.
KKTM is a new college for the Kerala Tourism studies and we were involved with the graphic design for the signage for the institution.
Signage for 15 Buildings which have already been converted into Museums.
Maps were designed for areas like gothuruthu which would be used in tourist brochures.

Prague . Czech Republic Maitrea is a Spa and spiritual healing center in Prague. The Spa is an adaptive reuse of an old warehouse. I was involved with the visualization of the courtyard. The two options we presented was a tropical courtyard and a Zen garden courtyard. The design played with the five senses using elements of The softwares used in this project are Draft Site, Sketchup and Thea Rendering.

Tring . uk This project involved a conditional assessment of a grade 2 heritage church,measured drawing of the church and the design of a church hall over an existing grave yard. The Grave yard stones were removed and relocated and piles were driven into the clay soil over which the new hall sits. I was involved with the measured drawings, working drawings, the conditional assessment,fire safety plans,site meetings and developing presentation boards. The softwares used in this project are Vectorworks, Photoshop.

BAmiyan . Afghanistan Bamiyan Cultural Center was a competition held by UNESCO The building structure is inspired by a meditating form in the LOTUS POSITION. The extending SILK DRAPE is a tribute to Bamiyan’s location on the SILK ROUTE The stepped roofs resemble the terraced topography formed like a silk drape. The site orientation responds to a combination of the optimal thermal efficiency from south and maximum views of the Buddha Cliff to North West I was involved with the Design development,Computational fluid analysis, Vizualization,Presentation. The softwares used in this project are Revit,Photoshop,3DS Max and Autodesk CFD and InDesign.

“ The landscape focuses on delivering long-term enhancements for the community. Along the Center’s exterior is a provision for temporary adaptable “shacks” serving as a farmers’ market or for adaptive use during festivals, local market for artists and chefs.
