s the interest for modern and alternative ways of gardening grows all over the world, pioneers are experimenting, developing new methods and trying to spread the word about soilless growing. When it comes to that, MamaPublishing is not to be overlooked. Tigrane Hadengue and Michka Seeliger-Chatelain created MamaPublishing in 2012 in Spain, as the sister company of MamaEditions that they founded in 2000 in Paris,

France. After thirteen years of experience and about 30 French titles, they decided to evolve into international reference books specializing in the fields of indoor and high-tech gardening. “With MamaPublishing we wanted to develop our gardening series while reaching a wider audience, from domestic gardeners to professionals”, says Tigrane. While expanding, they have kept the same vision: publishing high-quality works, supporting internationally recognized authors and being authentic. And it has worked!
Their book Hydroponics for Everybody by William Texier, has been a real success all around the world. First published in French, it is now translated into English, Spanish, German, Czech and Russian. “And there are more to come!” says Michka. The Dutch and Italian versions are in progress. "Because they cover everything about home horticulture and are well illustrated, those books are bibles for people who want to work on basic gardening or high-tech installations, and that is why they are such hits."

Culture en Int é rieur by Jorge Cervantes, available in 3 formats – Master, Basic and soon Mini – is also a MamaPublishing bestseller, with more than 70,000 copies sold. “The author is a worldwide reference for indoor gardening and those books – which target both professionals and enthusiasts – are sold all over the world”. MamaPublishing has developed an innovative concept with these series. Not only are the books practical guides for indoor gardening
and hydroponics, but they also provide people with a directory of professionals. " It is not always easy to find your way around in highly specialized sectors such as hydroponics. We wanted to help readers to get in touch with all types of professionals and also to provide them with information about festivals and trade shows.” The directories, which are updated every year are also an unconventional way for distributors to advertise. By adding those lists of professionals at the end of
their books, MamaPublishing turns them into real tools, reaching a large public and giving their advertisers a lasting worldwide visibility. Based in France, Tigrane and Michka travel all around the world to trade shows and festivals. They will attend "The Soilless Gardening Expo" In Mumbai, India on February 7 and 8. You will be able to find them at booth 18.

General Hydroponic Europe
G
eneral Hydroponics was founded in the mid 70's near San Francisco, California, by a group of scientists, researchers and technicians. Today, GH is recognised by the international scientific community for its reliability, the quality of its products and its sense of innovation. Within a few years, its reputation crossed international borders, extending to Canada, Australia, and on to Europe, where GH Europe was established in 1995, in the south-west of France. Since the beginning our objectives have remained the same: to stay at the cutting edge of technology, to offer the best quality of service, and to bring solutions for some of the environmental problems that our planet faces today.
to grow anywhere, from the city to the most remote country-side. One of the first concepts we developed in California was the "Family Farm". A Family Farm allows a family or individual wherever they are based, to produce part of the vegetables they consume, eliminating the expensive middlemen, and eventually providing surplus to sell within the local farmer's markets, co-ops, restaurants, etc. In our greenhouse in the south of France, we study the potential of several high cash crops, that will give the grower an alternative to traditional crops, and will allow him to step out of the vicious circle of subsidies.
Our technology is called "Aerohydroponics": plants grow without substrate, in a perfectly balanced flow of nutritive solution, saturated with oxygen. (A more detailed description follows).
We especially study the field of medicinal plants, where there exists a constant demand of quality stock, and where it is urgent today to stop the gathering of many endangered species, as is the case, for instance, of Arnica montana. Our research is aimed on selecting the right species, optimising their harvest and increasing their content in active principles.
Thanks to its flexibility, this alternative growing method holds an enormous potential of opportunities. It can be adapted to most situations, allowing one
Today, after years of research, we are proud to offer you a new concept in growing: Bioponics or organic hydroponics (Patent N° 0511569), which associates

the advantages of hydroponics with those of organic cultivation, within the concept of durable development. Aware of the insufficiencies in the food and water supply on the planet, we participate in food development projects in the third world. Indeed, by adapting our technology to the existing resources,we teach populations a way to provide for their immediate basic needs and to create, whenever possible, an unexpected but well needed source of income. As environmentalists, when possible we utilise recycled materials. To respond to the problem of electrical consumption, we are currently testing in California, the first systems powered by solar energy. Our line of products is vast, often unique, and always in evolution. It is developed by our team of researchers, thoroughly studied, and then tested in our greenhouses in California and in France. Today our products are used by grower’s worldwide. They are sought after by the most important laboratories in the world and NASA uses Floraseries and the AeroFlo in their studies on cultivation in their space stations.

magnetic ballast/reflector system which is easy to hang and will provide plenty of light while running quietly and safely. It includes the bulb, hangers, instructions and lighting recommendations. It may require a plug adaptor or voltage converter for operation in India. Media-based systems such as ebb-and-flow, top feed or bottom feed systems rely on a growing medium to support the plants and hold nutrient solution around their roots. Most operate on timers, alternately wetting the medium to wash out salts and replenish nutrients, then draining so the plants can draw in oxygen. With these systems, setup is more complex, costs are higher and media needs to be replaced occasionally. These systems need to be protected from power outages, which can leave vulnerable roots high and dry if the pump stops running.
One complete ebb and flow kit available exclusively from Hydrofarm is the Active Aqua™ Grow Flow Ebb & Flow System. This includes 12 2-gallon bucket growing modules, a digital controller, a 55 gallon distribution reservoir, two 250 GPH high flow pumps and all the fittings and tubing needed to install the system. It is also expandable up to 48 growing modules. Make sure that your lighting components are compatible before you purchase them. “Intelligent” dimmable ballasts such as Hydrofarm’s stateof-the-art Phantom ™ series are among the ballasts that knowledgeable growers are choosing for their sophisticated features, super reliability and energy efficiency. The best reflectors, such as Hydrofarm’s premium Daystar®AC Reflector or the value-priced Xtrasun® Aluminum
Wing Reflector, create wide light spread and run at a cool temperature, something to consider in enclosed grow rooms. Again, some electrical products may require plug adaptors and/or voltage converters. As you gain more experience and knowledge about soilless and indoor gardening, you’ll quickly discover how much technology is changing and improving this worthwhile endeavor. We’re now able to grow food in places once thought impossible, and the world will eat better and more frequently because of it. The experts at Hydrofarm continue to lead the way by bringing the best and most innovative products to the market. You can depend on their knowledge and expertise as you learn more about this fascinating way of gardening.

You Can Grow Fresh Air Indoors
E
ver thought about the quality of air you breathe? Is the air at your home or office pure and fresh?
We are aware that air pollution is a grave challenge to the environment as well as health. Most of the people tend to think that air pollution takes place only outside. This is not so because air pollution can be found both indoors and outdoors. In a day, on an average we take 23,000 breaths. Studies have revealed that indoor air can be 10 times more polluted than outdoor air. Every year, several people fall prey to health hazards caused due to the pollutants present in the air. Homes and offices harbor pollutants that get trapped indoors. Some pollutants enter the structures via wall paints, carpets, furniture and other new objects while some exist because of the things already put into use. Chemicals and allergens accumulate in the dust. Amongst the common air pollutants, the most notorious ones are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Particulate Matter (PM 10 & 2.5), Nitrogen Oxides, Carbon Monoxide (CO), Ozone (O3) and Sulphur Dioxide (SO2). They can be in the form of gases or particles.

These pollutants cause eye irritation; respiratory symptoms; lung impairment; asthma; headache; nausea; damage to the liver, kidney, and central nervous system; cancer and in extreme instances, even death. As a matter of fact these pollutants may raise a question mark on your well-being and life. Before things get worse, it is imperative to take precautionary measures.
We have talked a lot about air pollution and its adverse effects on humans. Now is the time for solution. Soilless gardening or Hydroponic Culture is one of the tidy, efficient and effective solutions. Hydroponics – a subset of hydroculture is a technique of growing plants by using nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. Normally, soil acts as a reservoir of nutrients that are essential for the growth

of a plant. However, the soil itself is not necessary for the growth of a plant. Researchers had found earlier that plant roots can absorb the mineral nutrients dissolved in water, not in soil. Then, a soilfree method of growing plants i.e. hydroponic culture emerged. The roots of some plants like those of terrestrial origin can be grown with their roots submerged in the mineral nutrient solution or in an immovable medium like perlite, charcoal, gravel, clay-pebbles, coconut husk and other suitable materials. Needless to say, plants have amazing potential of detoxifying the air. Indoor plants help in removing chemical toxins present in the air. They remove air pollutants by absorbing harmful gases through their leaves and roots. The ability of an indoor plant to remove harmful chemical moving in the air is an example of phytoremediation. They produce oxygen which helps in enhanced levels of oxygen & therefore improved air quality inside the building. Some plants produce oxygen during the day time and some during the night time. Keep

a mix of these two kinds of plants so that oxygen supply into the air remains constant. Place small green plants in the corners of the rooms or in the passage. You can also replace some of your VOC – emitting show pieces with new indoor plants. Some of the plants that help in removing VOCs are Aloe Vera, Spider Plants, Boston ferns, Purple Waffle plants, English Ivy, Areca Palms, Golden Pothos, Japanese royal ferns etc. If you practice gardening in a conventional way, roots may decay if you don’t take proper care of it. You need to change water and treat soil on a regular basis. With hydropones, you overcome all this. As hydropones, re-circulate water within its system for consecutive 10—15 days, you don’t have to water them daily. So, they are water-efficient too. And as it is a completely soil-proof process, plants are liable to stay free from soil-borne diseases as well as from the possibilities of catching dust, molds and allergens. Hydropones are the plants that receive a balanced and
higher level of nutrients to grow. Comparatively, they are greener, healthier and more efficient in producing oxygen and eliminating toxins present in the air. They are very efficient to perform the detoxification action in the indoor environment. With an increased level of oxygen supply in the blood, one can experience a significant decrease in the instances of sleep apnea, poor concentration, forgetfulness, mood swings, restlessness, depressive thoughts, fatigue, decrease alertness, memory and judgment. Moreover, they do not require a lot of space. And as the system is self-regulating, it does not demand too much of manual labour. The best part is that hydropones can bring down the expense to almost 20% as compared to the conventional method of gardening. Studies have also found that clean air can reverse the effects of air pollution. Clean air can bring down the instances of Eye Irritation by 52%, Respiratory Symptoms by 34%, Headaches by 24%, Lung impairment by 12%

Vertical Kitchen Garden The Vertical Kitchen Garden is a vertical food production system designed for home and commercial farmers. It lets even inexperienced growers grow fresh healthy vegetable in fraction of the time than it would take to grow the same crops in soil. It is based on the principal of hydroponic farming. This is green & sustainable vertical growing system. Since it is a closed system 100% of the water and nutrients are recycled. This means crops uses as a little 5 Percent of water normally required in soil for conventional farming. The PH balance maintained by the ionic minerals in the nutrients
solution helps in prevent disease, thereby reducing the necessity to use organic or conventional pesticides. This helps in producing ‘Green’ healthy, Pesticide free food crops in the comfort of your own backyard. Almost any crop can be growing in the Kitchen Garden. We have, developed the system keeping in mind ambient climate of the subcontinent. The system can grow highly nutritious and fresh crops in fraction of the time than it would to grow the same crops in soil. It highly oxygenates the roots to grow healthy strong plants. Increased oxygen to root system helps to prevent disease
and improve plant growth. The Tower Garden uses a water based growing system that features a highly oxygenated environment for the plant roots.

VYDRO VYDRO® substrate is the ideal water management and growth medium layer for any type of green roof, living wall or grass growing application.
Capable of absorbing up to 30 times its own weight in water, VYDRO® substrate is proven to work well in hot, dry countries where water for horticultural purposes is often in short supply. Independent research has shown that grass planted on a layer of VYDRO® substrate requires far less watering to remain lush and green. When irrigation is reduced by just 20%, conventional grass samples go into stress and begin to yellow, while grass planted on VYDRO® substrate retains its color – even when watering is reduced by up to 40%. For more information about Huntsman, please visit the company's website at www.huntsman.com e-mail: vydro@huntsman.com www.thevydroeffect.com

THE TRIMPRO EXPERIENCE – A Profile of the World’s Leading Trimmer Manufacturer
T
RIMPRO plant leaf and flower trimmers respond to virtually every trimming need of today’s growers with their design simplicity, reliability, and overachieving efficiency. Canadian manufacturer TRIMPRO is today’s acknowledged world leader/ innovator in the category it not only created, but has worked tirelessly to develop since introducing its first model in 2003. Currently the company manufactures 9 superbly engineered trimming units, designed and refined using more customer input than any of their kind, and boasting quality component materials such as British stainless steel and Brazilian leather among their many standout features. For convenience, TRIMPRO has organized plant trimmer models by the type of plant drying methods customers favour, and for which each machine has been specifically designed. Choosing the machine best suited to a particular drying method, and level of production, will ensure greater efficiency and the best possible results in the processing of valuable produce. Essentially there are 3 types of unit: 36

Manual Control Units
– where branches are rotated over the trim grate by hand, or flowers are moved by hand around the trim grate, offering optimal manual control of the trim.
Robotic Touch Units – in which flowers are moved gently around the trim grate by leather fingers, essentially imitating and replacing the action of your own hands. Airflow Units – in which flowers are tumbled gently by a ‘whirlwind’ airflow over the trim grate surface, in a sealed environment and with minimal contact. Key to TRIMPRO’s rapidly growing global success are its units’ excellent performance and acknowledged durability, making them a far smarter investment than many competitive models, particularly those known by many as ‘oneseason wonders’. Manufactured to the highest standards and using only the most durable and reliable components, TRIMPRO equipment also has one of the best support networks, with parts and helpful information available virtually anytime, to ensure minimized downtime and the consistency of a customer’s operation.
UNPLUGGED While imitations continue to be introduced, none can match the TRIMPRO true value proposition, the superior all-around performance, or warranty and UNPLUGGED after sales service commitment. Over 12,000 operators worldwide would likely agree – choosing a TRIMPRO plant trimmer is one of the easiest and smartest business decisions they have ever made. Hydroponic Micro Farms By Noucetta Kehdi – GHE
G
eneral Hydroponics was founded in California in 1976, by Lawrence Brooke. At that time most people didn’t know what hydroponics was, except for scientists who used it for research, governments to grow food for their troops, and some of the first industrial greenhouse owners for largescale food production… and a group of visionaries gathered around GH. Our option at GH, since the very first days, was to open our technology to the main public, including plant collectors, home gardeners, and family farmers. At the time when the first industrial greenhouses were developing, we had already opted for small scale, local, high quality food production, replacing soil and soilless methods of growing plants with aero-hydroponics, our specialty. Precursors as always, our vision was a sustainable, human-size hydroponic family garden, with priority given to quality rather than quantity, and durability rather than economical growth at all costs.

Salad and herbs in a micro farm in Perm - Russia
You might say that family gardens are nothing new; they exist since the beginning of times. And you are right. The “only” innovation we bring is “hydroponics”, as a viable and ecological alternative to plant production, with multiple advantages http://gb.eurohydro. com/hydroponics.html). Most importantly: • Hydroponics can be installed everywhere: in the countryside and in the most crowded city,
in poor regions and in extreme conditions, bringing food production closer to the end consumer, and reducing the carbon print of process sing and shipping to the strict minimum. • It can take any shape and be adapted to any space. Considering that hydroponics, when well managed, can give as much as 30% more yield, the smallest growing area becomes a potential garden. Especially in crowded areas.
• It insures high quality, nutritious and safe plants for your family and community. • It uses 80 to 90% less water than the same crop grown in soil. • It helps optimize the potential of your plant’s genetics • It uses no herbicides and generally resorts to integrated pest management. • It is has an excellent return upon investment. • In 1991 in Sebastopol, California, William Texier and myself created one of the first hydroponic micro farms in the world, the “White Owl WaterFarm”, which inspired several hydroponic operations since then. During a few years this is where we acquired most of our knowledge and experience, growing a large variety of plants from tomatoes to peppers and chilies, salads, herbs, peas and beans, kale, chard, and many more. We even tried carrots and beets, just to test feasibility.

the demand from the North of San Francisco bay restaurants and fine groceries. With fresh, flavorful produce and rapid local service, the White Owl became rapidly fully self sufficient.
Then, in 1995, we created General Hydroponics in the South West of France, built more greenhouses, and extended our experience to numerous other varieties, including medicinal, Tomatoes growing in a micro farm in California
The White Owl was a 450 m2 setting covered with different size AeroFlos. We used Flora Series and our pH regulators, nothing else, and got the best results. Our greenhouse had a very basic but sufficient program regulating ventilation and temperature, as this is priority. We wanted to keep it a low-cost but durable investment and accessible to our purse, so we kept it simple, with the human eye as the main control. For sales, we specialized in Genovese basil and yellow and red sweet peppers following

aromatic, roots and rhizomes, cacti, rare, collectibles, etc, all of them growing in our hydroponic systems and with our nutrients. We can easily say today that since 1991 we grew more than 500 different varieties, which gives as a unique experience growing plants hydroponically. With quality in mind since the very beginning, GH created our first hydroponic mineral nutrient, Flora Series (FloraGro, FloraMicro and FloraBloom) in 1976. Efficient and easy to use with only 3 products to mix and clear feeding charts, Flora Series serves your plants with a balanced diet in an extremely efficient way. The purpose of this multi-component concept is to obtain a high-grade, complete, liquid, and very soluble nutrient that would be easy to adapt to the largest range of plants, while offering them the best nutrition according to their needs and life cycles. To make sure we produce healthy and safe foods we use purified mineral salts, and blend them in-house, following accurate proprietary formulas created by our researchers and tested in our greenhouses. And to guarantee optimal results, we regularly update our products with the latest scientific discoveries … but in a reasonable way, keeping in mind sustainability and durability. To address the organic food production sector, William Texier invented and patented “bioponics” (organic

hydroponics) in 2004 in France, with BioSevia. This is the first liquid nutrient to comply with European regulations on organic agriculture, while giving the best results in hydroponics. Depending on legislations and countries, “bioponic” products may, or may not, be accepted by organic regulators. Generally the simple fact that you are not growing in earth will remove
definitively this possibility. But fertile soil and space are not always available, and in our hydroponic micro farms we promote “reasoned” agriculture where the safety of food and self-sufficiency are among the main priorities. In 2008 we completed BioSevia with General Organics, including new and unique supplements for hydro like worm casting or nettle brew.
Concerning supplements, we did not use them much until well into the late ‘90s. Our experience growing plants in hydro with only Flora Series and well-balanced EC and pH levels, had always given us the most plentiful crops. However, the more we learned about plants and plant nutrition, the more we learned about the advantages of some supplements. These products do not bring more food to the plant; they optimize growth in different ways, depending on their nature: humic and fulvic acids help better assimilate mineral salts, silicate powder helps develop resistance to pests and disease, nettle brew helps improve immune system, etc, etc. So that today, in our plant production projects, be it salads, tomatoes, basil or strawberries, we continue using mainly Flora Series and the regulators. Depending on needs, and what we have to achieve for our plants, we will add supplements. For instance, just last month, we saved a small production of salads growing in an AeroFlo with General Organics, from a pythium attack by adding Mineral Magic for a few days. Our hydroponic micro farm concept would not be possible without the systems. Our choice goes to the AeroFlo. After 25 years growing plants in hydroponics, and trying many other systems, this is still our favorite for small and large operations. The AeroFlo is a high-tech machine adapted to
investment, low in maintenance and user friendly. Depending on crops, we may also use our “DPS hydro” systems, especially for rhizomes like ginger or mint production.

our daily needs. It maintains the perfect level of oxygen in the nutritive solution, and has an excellent circulation rate, two basic conditions for good growth. It is fast, flexible and modular, and may be used for propagation as well as production. The AeroFlos adjust to all growing areas. It is a onetime, long-term
If hydroponic micro farms like the White Owl WaterFarm were a little too advanced for their time in 1991, they are right on the spot in 2014. Some already exist here and there on the planet, and they are spreading fast. Wherever they are, they encounter large success. Today one of my goals is to develop hydroponic micro farms as widely as I can because they are the right answer to many social and ecological difficulties humanity is facing. Those small size, low investment/high return operations will provide healthy food locally, and participate to the community’s welfare, bringing back the production of basic foods into the hands of each and everyone of us, exactly what our society needs today. In my dreams I can see little models of the White Owl sprouting everywhere on our planet, and in all the neighborhoods worldwide. Hydroponics and Its Types
T
he word “hydroponics” comes from greek “hydro” – water and “ponos” – work that can literately be translated as “working water”. In hydroponics plants are grown without water but with the help of nutrient solutions that contain all the necessary elements available for plants to absorb them while being in right concentration. Plants' roots are hold in the substrate that does not have any impact on the plants nourishment. Sometimes there is no substrate at all.
In hydroponics there are a few dozens of hydroponic systems that can be categorized in six main types: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Wick system Deep water culture N.F.T system EBB & Flow system Drip System Aeroponics

These six types can be divided into two large groups: 1. “Passive” or wick systems In this case the nutrient solution is delivered to the roots by means of capillary force without any mechanical influence (one end of the wick is in the nutrient solution and the other is in the plant pot). The wick system belongs to this group. 2. “Active” systems The circulation of the nutrient solution and the aeration is conducted with the help of some mechanisms. Nourishment and air are delivered to the roots through pumps. The other five types belong to this group.
Let us examine each of these hydroponics systems in details:
1. Wick system This type is the most simple hydroponics system. It belongs to the so called passive systems and is based on the capillary force that does not require any mechanism. Nourishment is delivered to the roots with the help of wicks going from the tank to the substrate (Picture 1). Thus, different materials can form the substrate. Among them there are coconut fiber, pearlite layer, vermiculite etc. This system is used for the ornamental gardening with normal soil (one end of the wick is placed into the water or special solution and the other one is in the pot with soil). This system has one and rather important drawback: it works only for relatively small plants. Big and hygrophilous plants need more nutrient solution than they can get from filters. In such cases the plants are grown with the help of another system. Due to this disadvantage wick systems are not very wide spread.

2. Deep Water Culture This is the most simple hydroponics system. The plants are fixed on the platform that is often made of foam plastic (Picture 2). This platform drifts in the tank filled with nutrient solution. Plants roots are constantly placed in water to obtain enough oxygen. The aeration of the nutrient solution is done with the help of a special pump. The solution is changed on a regular basis. This system is ideal to cultivate small fast-growing plants that need a lot of liquid (for example salad). But it is not suitable for big long-standing ones. To grow a big plant, a modified version of this system was invented. It is called the J-Racks system (or the fixedplatform system). In his case the platform is attached to the tank with nutrient solution and special racks are fixed to support the plants (for example tomatoes). This type of hydroponics systems is suitable to acquire first experience and skills in hydroponics.

Picture 3. N.F.T
3. N.F.T. System The nutrient solution is transferred from the tank to the container where the plants are fixed in small plastic cups with holes for roots to grow. The nutrient solution is delivered with the help of a pump. The solution gets to the roots and then drops back into the tank. The flow is either maintained constantly or switched on automatically within small time periods. The roots are in touch with a thin layer of the nutrient solution that is constantly on the tank bottom. Roots receive
enough oxygen due to humid air above the nutrient solution. In such type of hydroponics solution you will not need the timer for the pump. There is no substrate used except for air what helps to keep it cheap. The main disadvantage of this system is the sensibility for power shortage or pump breakdown. In case of the lack of electricity roots start drying almost immediately. As a solution autonomous energy sources are used (batteries) as well substrates to prevent roots from drying.

4. EBB & Flow System Nutrient solution is delivered to the roots in the substrate (haydite, pearl-stone, gravel, coir etc) and then it flows over into the tank. The process is automatic as the pump is connected to the timer. When the timer is on the pump starts Tank delivering nutrient solution to the roots. When it is off the solution gets into the tank by itself (Picture 4). After all the solution is gone into the tank the roost are aired.

The flooding is done a few times a day that depends on the culture and the substrate type. The disadvantage is hidden in the energy shortage and the pump breakdown. In case of breakage plants can die if haydite or likewise substrates are used (the ones that do not hold liquid properly). That is why it is advisable to use substrates that hold moisture well (coir, vermiculite etc).

5. Drip System This is the most popular hydroponics system. The timer operated pump delivers nutrient solution that goes through pipes and drips at the root of each plant. Plants roots are placed in the substrate (Picture 5). It is possible to use separate pots to make it easier to remove, to change or to withdraw plants. There are two types of the Drip system:
46
| Soilless Gardening India Magazine • February'14
a) Recovery Drip System. The overage flows back to the tank and is reused. You will not need an accurate water management plan so you can resort to a simple timer. Nevertheless you should keep an eye on acidity level and the solution composure. b) Non-Recovery Drip System. The solution is not used twice. That is why the timer is to be set thoroughly. It should be more accurate to avoid any overage to prevent roots from rotting. This system requires less time for maintenance since the pH level and the nutrient balance remain the same thus making it unnecessary to check it. As all other active systems this method is vulnerable to energy shortage as well as pump and timer breakdown. Besides pipes can get clogged.

Picture 6. Aeroponics
Aeroponics is the most state-of-art hydroponics system. The plants are fixed on the top of the container. They are hung and their roots are in the air. Inside the container there are sprays that are activated by the timers and the pump. Sprays regularly shower the roots with nutrient solution (the time interval is calculated on the basis of the time required for absorbing). Thus roots are constantly in a mist of oxygen and nutrient solution. High aeration encourages shorter periods for growing. In hydroponics it is very important to set up the timer correctly. It will maintain a short cycle and switch on the pump for a few seconds every minute. The system disadvantage is the roots drying in case of energy shortage or timer and pump breakdown.
After Analyzing Six Types of hydroponics Systems a Few Conclusions Can be Drawn: • All the hydroponics systems are effective if the conditions are respected as they give to plants everything they need and in right proportions; • Almost all the types of hydroponics solutions are automatic that requires less involvement of a worker; • All the hydroponics systems imply the pH and nutrient level checks. Nevertheless, the most rigorous control is required for reversible systems (the level changes rather quickly);

| Soilless Gardening India Magazine • February'14
• The shortage of all the active hydroponics systems is the dependence on the electricity as well as the pump or timer (when they are required); • To avoid plants dying it is advisable to use moisture holding substrates (coir, vermiculite etc) especially in hydroponics systems with high vulnerability to energy shortage or the pump breakdown; • Hydroponics equipment is rather expensive but you can resort to economical methods or prepare some equipment yourself. Main hydroponics principles remain the same.
