Catching and Releasing Trout Today's anglers can take simple steps to improve the quality of future fishing. Some anglers practice catchand-release fishing all or much of the time, while others release only sub-legal (undersize) trout. The guidelines below are intended to help anglers reduce mortality of trout that are released. How many of the measures are you using? • handle fish as little as possible and release them quickly - do not fight fish to exhaustion • minimize or eliminate the time fish are out of the water • consider using only artificial lures - their use is mandatory on some waters • when a fish is deeply hooked, do not try to remove the hook - clip the leader instead • during the warm summer months when stream temperatures are elevated, do not fish for trout if you plan to release them - these fish are already stressed and additional handling may kill them (For additional guidance, check out Help Trout & Salmon Beat the Summer Heat) • likewise, do not fish for trout in spring holes when water temperatures are in the mid 70s or higher (especially if you plan to release them)

Fishing Responsibly in New York State Courtesy NYS DEC From small headwater tributaries and tiny ponds, to large rivers and lakes, New York is blessed with abundant fishing waters. To help ensure that the state's fish populations remain healthy, New York's Department of Environmental Conservation continually monitors the resource and employs a wide range of fishing regulations. These fishing regulations are frequently evaluated to ensure the best possible fish populations are maintained in the Empire State's diverse waters. Anglers can assist this effort by fishing responsibly. Be sure that you know and understand the regulations for the waters that you will be fishing. In addition to following fishing regulations there are other ways that you can insure that your fishing will not harm aquatic resources or others enjoyment of them. Through following the simple guidelines below, anglers will help make sure there will be great fishing for future generations to enjoy. Non-toxic Sinkers and Jigs The loss of sinkers and lures is a routine part of fishing. Unfortunately, lost sinkers, especially split shot, may be mistaken for food or grit and eaten by waterbirds such as ducks, geese, swans, gulls, or loons. Toxic effects of even a single lead sinker can cause birds to sicken and increases the risk of death

through predation, exposure, or lead poisoning. As responsible anglers, we should seek to reduce the unintended effects on the natural environment and leave no trace of our presence. A trip to your favorite tackle shop will reveal a variety of alternatives to lead split shot, sinkers and jig heads. By switching to nontoxic sinkers with your next purchase, you can assure that your fishing tackle choices are helping to reduce the risk of lead poisoning to birds. New York State passed legislation that will prohibit the sale of certain lead sinkers. Beginning in May 2004, the sale of lead fishing sinkers (including "split shot") weighing one-half ounce or less will not be permitted. Protecting Wildlife and Fishing Privileges When fishing, anglers need to be conscious of their effects on the environment, and make sure they practice their sport in a manner that has a minimal impact on all the state’s natural resources. Discarded monofilament line, along with old fishing lures and gear can potentially harm wildlife. For some species, the results can be fatal. It’s up to all anglers to be responsible and protect the state’s wildlife and environment. Monofilament Line Experienced anglers recognize the need to frequently cut back or change to fresh monofilament

fishing lines. The relatively soft composition of these popular lines makes them easily damaged while playing or landing fish. When replacing or fixing damaged line, be sure to properly dispose of any excess. Monofilament line degrades slowly in the environment, with heavier lines taking much longer to break down than light lines. Carelessly discarded monofilament line can seriously harm wildlife. Animals can become entangled in, or ingest the line, whereby starvation, strangulation or deep wounding are possible. So, be sure to remove any discarded line as well as any other monofilament line that you may encounter while fishing. Litter An unspoiled setting greatly adds to most people’s enjoyment of their total angling experience. Too often litter identifies popular fishing spots and often some of this litter such as bait containers, lure packaging
and discarded monofilament line is undeniably associated with the presence of anglers. When you leave garbage behind, you not only affect wildlife-- you also leave the impression that anglers are thoughtless and don’t care about the environment. Affected landowners may close the area to fishing. So, be responsible and try to leave the area you visit even cleaner than when you arrived.

Fishing Responsibly in New York State
Continued from page 7
Retrieve All Lures and Gear Including those that got snagged in tree branches or on submerged vegetation or logs where possible. Animals may mistakenly ingest, or become entangled in, or get accidentally hooked by fishing equipment carelessly left by anglers. Non-Native Plants and Animals Many waters in New York State have been affected by the unintentional introduction of non-native plants and animals such as zebra mussels, Eurasian water milfoil, water chestnut and the river ruffe. Often, when species such as these are first introduced, there is an absence of natural mechanisms such as predators or diseases to control these new organisms and so their numbers can skyrocket out of control. The new invading species may rapidly displace native species by outcompeting them for resources such as food and growing space. As a result, the entire natural balance and species composition of the aquatic system can be seriously disrupted, including the fisheries. Anglers can help maintain the state’s great fishing by carefully following a few simple guidelines to prevent the spread of unwanted aquatic species. To Stop Aquatic Invaders: Remove all mud and aquatic plants from all gear, boats, motors and trailers before departing from an access site. Drain all water including bilges, live wells and bait tanks before departing from an access site. Dry boat and equipment thoroughly after use, or flush bilges and clean boat with very hot water or steam clean. Do not transport fish from one body of water to another. Do not release unused bait into any body of water. Do not dispose of fish carcasses or by-products in
any body of water. Do not assume that a body of water is already contaminated and ignore protective measures. Fish as Bait As previously mentioned, the introduction of nonnative fish species into a body of water disrupts the established delicate balance of nature, and can have disastrous affects on local fisheries. As an example, many of New York’s lakes and ponds that once supported outstanding brook trout fisheries have become heavily populated with baitfish or small panfish that outcompete the native trout for food and living space. Round whitefish, an Adirondack native species, has become endangered in New York State, largely from aggressive competition from non-native species. In many instances, it was anglers that unknowingly introduced these non-native species by emptying their bait buckets into the water at the end of the day. To guard against such unwanted introductions, as well as the spread of other undesirable aquatic organisms such as zebra mussels and the parasite that causes whirling disease that can be present in the water in a bait bucket, DEC places some restrictions on the use of baitfish on certain waters in the state. Before using baitfish, anglers should make sure it is okay to use them on the waters they plan to fish, and remember: Never use baitfish in waters where their use is prohibited. Never release live bait from your bait bucket into any of New York’s waters. Never stock any species of fish in any water without first obtaining a free Fish Stocking Permit from your Regional Fisheries Manager. Always dispose of water from your baitbucket on land, never pour it into a lake, pond or stream. Always encourage others to follow these guidelines to help New York’s native fish populations to remain healthy and keep fishing productive.

Adirondack Canoeing UPPER SARANAC LAKE the largest of the Saranacs, offers 37 miles of shoreline and stirring views of the distant High Peaks, as well as 20 primitive campsites available on a first come basis. The numerous ponds to the west of the lake are ideal for short paddles, or as starting points for longer trips into the Saranacs. MIDDLE SARANAC LAKE features numerous islands and some of the finest natural beaches in the area. Paddle north to Weller Pond, a lovely and secluded wilderness pond. There are five campsites on Weller Pond and twenty on Middle Saranac, both on islands and on the shore. LOWER SARANAC LAKE is our favorite for family day trips, with numerous access points and convenient boat and canoe rentals. Given its proximity to the village of Saranac Lake downtown is one mile from Ampersand Bay, the Lower Lake is ideal for easy day tripping. 15 miles northwest of the village of Saranac Lake. The St. Regis is the largest wilderness canoe area in the Northeast U.S., offering some of the most stirring and serene paddling to be found anywhere. The Canoe Area is easily accessed, making for a great selection of half day, full day, and multi day excursions. We recommend the historic “Route Of The Seven Carries,” beginning at Little Clear Pond and ending at Upper St. Regis Lake. You can camp along the way, or do the trip in an easy day! There are numerous primitive campsites throughout the Canoe Area which are available on a first come basis. Note that motor boats are not permitted on these waters.

Saranac River Trail Greenway The Saranac River, winding from the Adirondack Mountains to Lake Champlain, has always offered many opportunities for recreational activities such as fishing and paddle sports. Now, with the development of the Saranac River Trail Greenway, visitors and residents will have even more opportunities to enjoy the river, including hiking and biking in the summer, as well as cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. The Greenway, when complete, will meander through the river valley for 27 miles from the City of Plattsburgh to the Town of Saranac, connecting with other community trail systems and significantly expanding public recreational access to this natural scenic and historic area. Two sections of the Greenway are now open (see below), with more to come. You can find more information about the Greenway and follow its progress on Facebook and Instagram @ SaranacRiverTrailGreenwayInc. Saranac River Trail, City of Plattsburgh. This paved trail can be easily accessed from the downtown parking lot at the end of Durkee Street,
by Bridge Street Auction. A footbridge takes the trail across the river and along the south bank. After crossing a second footbridge, the trail turns left and continues along Pine Street. Be sure to stop here to visit the Max Moore Memorial Treehouse, a universally accessible treehouse overlooking the river. The trail continues across South Catherine Street and follows the river as it winds behind the SUNY Plattsburgh campus, ending at George Angell Drive. There is a small parking lot here. From the downtown access point to Angell Drive, this section of the Greenway is approximately two miles long. Treadwell Mills Connector, Town of Plattsburgh and Town of Schuyler Falls. Take Exit 36 off I-87 and follow Route 22 north. Access to the trail is from a parking lot on the left, across the railroad tracks, about half a mile before the entrance to the Plattsburgh International Airport. The trail can also be accessed at the Lower Saranac Hydroelectric Project on Military Turnpike. Parking is available on the north side of the dam. This 1.5-mile graveled trail passes through wooded areas, under the I-87 bridge that spans the river, and along the power canal that feeds

the hydroelectric project’s turbines. It’s a moderate walk, with interesting views of the dam and the limestone outcrops that shape the river’s
course. From the Greenway trail, you can also access two unimproved trail loops that will take you through the woods along the riverbank.

Lake Champlain Basin Program
A VIBRANT REGION
Ringed by mountains and fertile lowlands, the Champlain Valley is filled with water carried from the surrounding land by a large network of rivers and streams. Rain and melting snow cascade down the rugged peaks of the Adirondacks, meander through the fields of Québec, and roll through the hills and mountains of Vermont. These tributaries, and their associated lakes and ponds, drain a far-flung watershed known as the Lake Champlain Basin. At 8,234 square miles, this drainage area is remarkably large, measuring 19 times larger than the surface area of the Lake itself. With waters in New York and Vermont in the United States, and the Province of Québec in Canada, Lake Champlain crosses political boundaries and unites a culturally diverse area. Beginning near Whitehall, New York, the Lake flows north over 100 miles to the Canadian border and the outlet of the Richelieu River. The Richelieu then flows north to the St. Lawrence River, and onward to the Atlantic Ocean. Lake Champlain’s natural resources and connectivity with other waterways have long made it an ideal location for human settlement and trade. Since the arrival of the first Native peoples, the history of the region has been inseparable from
the Lake. Today, more than 600,000 people live in the Lake Champlain Basin and millions visit each year to enjoy its waters and other natural and historic features. The Champlain Basin is covered with a patchwork of natural and human communities; a landscape in constant change. The watershed’s natural diversity includes significant freshwater wetlands, complex aquatic ecosystems, a world class fishery and abundant wildlife habitat. The waterways used by humans are also vital corridors and migration routes for animals including large mammals, fish and waterbirds. Many rare and endangered species of plants and animals also find habitat in the conservation areas and working lands of the Lake and Basin. The Lake’s intricate shoreline, measuring over 587 miles,

features rocky bluffs, sand and cobble beaches, deltas and a variety of wetlands. More than 70 islands dot the waters, and numerous inlets and bays add to the complexity of the Lake’s narrow profile. At its deepest, the Lake plunges down 400 feet, with an average depth of 64 feet. The southernmost regions of the South Lake are much like a river, which widens into the scenic expanse of the Main Lake. At Malletts Bay, the Lake reaches its greatest width, stretching 12 miles across. To the north, the Champlain Islands define an area known as the Northeast Arm, and in the far northeastern corner are the shallow waters of Missisquoi Bay. Each lake segment has unique characteristics and water quality issues.
Culture of Stewardship A healthy Lake Champlain is integral to the region’s quality of life, providing drinking water, recreation, fish and wildlife, and scenery for residents and visitors to use and enjoy. These natural and cultural resources attract business, tourism, and a thriving cultural scene. For centuries, human activities on the land have also profoundly influenced the Lake. Pollution, overfishing, and dams have dramatically changed aquatic communities. The alteration of shorelines and rivers, the destruction of wetlands, and the arrival of nonnative species also have had an impact. Erosion and stormwater runoff bring sediments, fertilizers, and other pollutants into the water, with excess nutrients that can fuel the growth of unwanted plants and algae. Bacteria, toxins, airborne pollution, and climate change also threaten water quality and the Lake ecosystem.

Partnerships are working throughout the Basin to protect and restore Lake Champlain and its watershed. Efforts are underway to control stormwater and agricultural runoff, stabilize river channels and protect wildlife habitats. Other priorities include ecological restoration, management of aquatic invasive species, and reduction of toxins. Citizen participation, community education, and sound management are all essential to the success of these initiatives. Lake Champlain and its watershed have shaped our history, our communities, and our lives. The stewardship of a healthy Lake will help to create a sustainable future for all of the Lake Champlain Basin.

Hiking Trails The High Peaks area continues to see increasing numbers of hikers, increased congestion and decreasing opportunities for solitude. While the rising number of visitors to these areas has resulted in trail erosion and damage to vegetation in heavily used areas, many nearby areas continue to see relatively light use, less trail damage and improved opportunities for solitude. The following hikes offer excellent opportunities for hikers preferring to seek alternates to many of the high use trails in the High Peaks Wilderness. Baker Mountain Moody Pond Road, Village of Saranac Lake: 0.9 mile one-way. This trail offers outstanding views of the Saranac Lakes, the High Peaks and McKenzie Mountain Range. Baxter Mountain Located 2.0 miles east of intersection of NYS Routes 73 and 9N at the top of the hill. The trail is south of Route 9N, 60 feet east of the intersection with Hurricane Road. 1.0 mile one-way. It offers good views of Dix, Giant and High Peaks Wilderness Areas. Cooperkiln Pond From NYS Route 86 in Wilmington, go 2.8 miles up Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway to the junction with Franklin Falls Road, on the right, thence 0.7 mile on Franklin Falls Road to the trailhead on the right. Cooperkiln Pond is 2.7 miles one-way from the trailhead. Floodwood Mountain NYS Route 30, between Fish Creek Ponds and Saranac Inn. Follow the FloodwoodDerrick Road 7.4 miles and turn left onto Floodwood Boy Scout Reservation Road and continue 0.2 mile to the parking area. The trail is 1.7 miles one way to the summit. The trail offers good autumn views of the High Peaks, the Saranac Lakes, and Tupper Lake. Giant Mountain Access is rom NYS Route 9N; the trail is located 4.5 miles west of Elizabethtown, on the south side of the highway. This is a nice, easyto-moderate 2.6 mile one-way hike to Owl’s Head overlook. Giant Mountain summit is an additional hike of 4.8 miles from the overlook. The total trip from the trailhead is 7.4 miles. Access from NYS Route 9, referred to as the East Trail to Rocky Peak Ridge and Giant Summit. The trail starts at a parking lot 4.9 miles north of the junction with Route 73. This is a rugged 8.0 mile one-way trip to Giant summit, but it has three great intermediate points: Blueberry Cobbles, at 2.0 miles; Bald Peak, at 3.9 miles and Rocky Peak Ridge at 6.7 miles. Hammond Pond A single trailhead provides access to Ber rymill Flow-Moose Mountain Pond, Hammond Pond, Challis Pond and Bass Lake. From I-87, Exit 29

Bike Paths
Biking Trails, Paths & Routes - There are many great trails and pathways in the Adirondacks that are specifically for biking. Below is a small sampling of some of the road and mountain trails: Pine Pond, Lake Placid Area Possibly Lake Placid’s most popular trail, Pine Pond is a 14-mile round trip that takes you to a great swimming hole. Bloomingdale Bog, Saranac Lake Area An elevated, sandy pathway with many open views that utilizes an abandoned D&H railroad right-of-way and bisects a plant-rich bog community. About 8 miles one way. Brewster Peninsula Nature Trails, Lake Placid A compact network of easy trails traversing gently rolling terrain and winding through a mixed forest and along the shore of Lake Placid. A brochure is available from the DEC, or you can contact a local bike shop or chamber of commerce for more information Hayes Brook Truck Trail, Paul Smiths Region A 7.2-mile round trip on wide dirt roads traverses a pine plantation and forest and leads to an old sheep meadow. Spur trails lead to Hayes Brook and to a lean-to on Grassy Pond. Contact a local bike shop or chamber of commerce for more information Flume Falls Trails, Wilmington Mountain biking trails in Wilmington (near Whiteface Mountain). Dirt roads and single track of varying degrees of difficulty, these trails connect with the Whiteface Mountain trail system. Jackrabbit Trail Trails along the railroad tracks, on an extension of the Jackrabbit Trail, and behind the parking lot where the tracks cross Route 86 between Saranac Lake and Ray Brook. The Peninsula Trails An easy access trail in Lake Placid with a variety of difficulty levels and swimming opportunities. The main trail brings you right to the shores of the lake. Connery Pond Truck Road A short dirt road suitable for all ability levels. Part of this Adirondack bike trail is in the Wilderness area and is closed to ATBs. Lake Champlain Bikeways An 1,100 mile network of interconnected bicycle routes, this route stretches from the southern Adirondacks and the Vermont Green Mountains, all the way north to Quebec, Canada. Originally a 350 mile loop around Lake Champlain, this extensive network of trails offers shorter biking routes with varying degrees of difficulty to satisfy the whole family. This trail system includes four ferry crossings, and two bridge crossings. River Forks Trail Traveling upon back roads from Jay to AuSable Forks this loop provides views of the Jay Range and the convergence of both East and West Branches of the AuSable River at AuSable Forks. Adirondack Marathon Trail As the name implies, the loop follows the Adirondack Marathon course established in 1997. It’s all-paved and generally flat-to-gently rolling. You will, however encounter a hilly section between mile four (4) and mile twelve (12). Traffic is generally minimal. When you arrive in the hamlet of Adirondack, don’t forget to stop at the General Store for refreshments. A good start/end point is in downtown Schroon Lake, where food, parking, and visitor information is available.
Fort to Fort This flat, all-paved tour follows the Champlain Bikeway between Crown Point State Historic Site at the bridge to Vermont and Fort Ticonderoga in Ticonderoga. Traffic is generally minimal. A recommended start/end point is at the Lake Champlain Visitors Center at the bridge. At either end, plan on touring these world renowned Revolutionary War historic sites. Food, lodging, and parking are available in both Ticonderoga and Crown Point. Iron to Iron This hilly ride is for advanced riders looking for a good workout. Be prepared for some occasional stretches of unpaved road surfaces; a cross-bike is recommended. Traffic is generally minimal. A recommended start/end point is at the Iron Center, near the Amtrak Station in Port Henry or at the Penfield Museum in Ironville. Food and lodging are available in the Port Henry/Moriah area. Wet & Wild This day-long ride takes in two of the most remote paved roads in the Adirondacks. Grades become gentle after a hilly climb out of Moriah Corners and the route winds through woodland and open marshlands. Traffic is generally minimal. A recommended start/end point is at the Iron Center, near the Amtrak Station in Port Henry. Food and lodging are available in the Port Henry/Moriah area. Coon Mountain Circuit For those wanting to combine cycling and hiking, this route is your ticket. Near the half-way point on Halds Road is the trailhead to Coon Mountain. A short hike up affords breathtaking views of Lake Champlain and the surrounding valley. With the exception of a short section along Route 22, the route has little traffic. Terrain is rolling. A recommended start/end point is in the hamlet of Essex, where food, lodging, parking and the ferry are available. Or, bicyclists can start/end in Westport, which also has food, lodging, and parking, as well as an Amtrak station. If starting from Westport, take Route 22 north to County 9, and at the top of the first hill take Sherman Road to Halds Road. Return to Westport on County 9. Rolling Reber Ramble As the name implies, the route is rolling, especially through the woodlands along Reber and Mountain Roads (be prepared for the occasional steep hill). Traffic is minimal with the exception of Route 22, and where frequent trucks carry wollastonite on the short stretch of County Route 57 between Jersey and Mountain View Roads. (Wollastonite trucks use Mountain View, Route 57, and Stowersville Roads during the work week.) A recommended start/end point is in the hamlet of Willsboro, where food, lodging, and parking are available. Surrounded by Water The route travels around Willsboro Point, offering plenty of views of Lake Champlain. The only steep hill is immediately north of the bridge over the Boquet River on Route 22. All roads are paved except for a 1/2 mile section. When traveling around the Point, be vigilant of vehicles pulling boat trailers. A recommended start/end point is in the hamlet of Willsboro, where food, lodging, and parking are available. Northern Adirondack Coast Bikeways Acres of Apples As the name suggests, Acres of Apples winds through a magnificent apple country landscape of orchards and farms. The loop is all-paved and flat-to-gently rolling with two steep hills within the first mile of the loop. Traffic is generally minimal. A good start/end point is the Port Kent ferry dock where food and parking are available. Food is also available along the route at one of the many farmstands and restaurants.
