Buck Hunting - Let Young Bucks Go and Watch Them Grow! Every year, tens of thousands of NY hunters enjoy the opportunity to bring home a handsome 2.5-year or older buck, while about half of the antlered bucks taken in NY are only 1.5 years old (yearlings). Yearling bucks generally weigh about 20% less and have 50% smaller antlers than they would as a 2.5-year-old. The primary reason New York doesn't have more older, largerantlered bucks in the harvest is because many get taken as yearlings. But the good news is that this is changing and hunters are now taking more older buck than ever before. Hunters can continue to push the harvest ratio solidly toward older bucks simply by choosing to Let Young Bucks Go and Watch Them Grow. You Can Change Your Deer Hunting Experience Decreasing harvest of young bucks is an unmistakable trend. For NY bucks to get bigger bodies and larger antlers, they simply need to get older. Older bucks are more challenging to hunt and yield more meat for the successful hunter. These bucks create more rubs and scrapes and vocalize more - all things that add to the hunting experience. As more hunters choose to pass young bucks, all hunters will enjoy the opportunity to see and take more older bucks. Many New York hunters are already choosing to pass up young bucks.

Reeling for Recovery Did you ever think you could help end someone’s drug addiction reeling in a fish? Reeling for Recovery is an ice event like no other where all the money is being donated to Champlain Valley Family Center, a not for profit, community based organization that serves people that suffer from addiction and works diligently on prevention. Their mission statement aligns with the organizers of the tournament. The money raised goes directly to prevention efforts that serves young people of our communities to lessen the impact of this horrible epidemic that our nation is in the midst of. On February 29, 2020 ice anglers from around New England are invited to participate in a one-day event. Fishing will take place on Chazy and Chateaugay lake. The weigh in stations will shut down at 3:30 with all awards be handed out at 4pm at the Lyon Mountain American Legion Sorrell-Woodward Post 1623.

ing to raise awareness and donate all of the profits raised in conjunction with this contest. The road was very challenging as the CVFC had a strict list of rules that Mr. Haley had to comply with.

Reeling for Recovery was founded in 2017 to help aid the fight against addiction. Jeremiah Haley approached the Champlain Valley Family Center look-

So what makes my event different from the rest? First of all, we would need to talk about both lakes. As many know, both Chazy and Chateaugay Lake are over 1,300 feet above sea level, allowing them to be one of the first to lock up and last to ice out. With many natural feeder streams running into the

lake, it is a haven for smelt and many other bait fish to flourish. Over the last decade, Pike have mysteriously appeared in Chazy Lake, which the event organizer, Jerry Haley, offers an extra cash reward (on top of the grand prize) to anyone that can pull a trophy sized one out of the particular lake. The Adirondack mountains have many lakes that store big fish, but both of these lakes have 10 to 20 pound fish pulled out every winter. Ice anglers spend months looking for that perfect laker or toothy pike as they chase smelt and schools of perch into shallow water. All of the proceeds for the Reeling for Recovery event go directly to at-risk youth programs within upstate New York. From the beginning, the event organizer was very clear with the Champlain Valley Family Center that he wanted to use this money to help kids get the services they need. With the 2019 event raising close to $7,000 in its first year, Champlain Valley Family Center was able to hold several much needed summer camps. In the past, they have had to place their focus on smaller centralized areas. With these additional funds they were not only able to expand to different district, but to also increase the efficiency of the intake programs.

Reeling for Recovery Continued from Page 7

When I first got started with the idea of an ice fishing tournament, I wanted to have the best of the best for the ice anglers when it came to prizes. Reeling for Recovery paid out cash prizes for kids and adults while offering a lunker pool of high-end fishing equipment valued at over $2,000. I also gave away five fully guided trips in an auction, and close to 200 door prizes. In most derbies, you win one or the other, in my event you have a chance to walk away with all the best options. This year, I’m promising to only bring bigger and better prizes to put a smile on any ice fishers’ face. Many event goers question my rules to keep the largest lakers alive. My first year, I learned a lot about the creature’s temperament and was able to successfully catch and release over a dozen live lakers. This aspect of the event was important to me as I have been to too many events where I just see dead, unclaimed fish or some not large enough to qualify. As a taxpayer, I don’t want to see the money I spend to support Looking for a Special Holiday Gift?

my local hatchery go towards catching smaller fish just to watch it die. In my opinion, that’s a waste for all parties involved. Reeling for Recovery will be held on February 29, 2020. It will offer fun, games for youth, onsite vendors with free samples, cash prizes, over 30 raffle baskets, and an extravagant buffet. Fishing starts at 5am and all fish caught to be entered are to be at the Sorrell-Woodward American Legion Post 1623 by 4pm at the end of the day.

How to make the most of kids’ first fishing trips

Fishing provides a great way for parents to bond with their children in the great outdoors. The value of first impressions has been well-documented, and parents who want their kids to inherit a love of fishing can take the following factors into consideration so their youngsters’ first fishing trips are successful. Local programs Fishing need not be an expensive hobby, but the costs can add up. Parents who are not sure if their kids will embrace fishing should look into local programs. Many towns, especially those with reputations for fishing, host free family fishing events. These events give parents an opportunity to see if their kids enjoy fishing before they start buying them gear. Starting simple Any fisherman would love to snag a trophy fish such as a largemouth bass on his or her first trip. And while that’s possible, it’s unlikely, especially for youngsters. Such fish tend to be difficult to catch, even for seasoned fishermen. When taking kids fishing for the first time, fish for something that’s somewhat simple to catch and capable of being caught throughout the day. If you aren’t familiar with your local rivers or lakes, visit a local outdoors store and ask for advice about which local bodies of water are home to fish that kids might be able to snag. Though it’s not imperative that kids catch a fish on their first trip, doing so might make them more enthusiastic about their next trip. Having fun

Don’t make the day all about catching fish, as even the most seasoned fishermen have their off days when nothing is biting. If the focus is on catching fish, kids might grow discouraged and not want to come back if they don’t catch anything on their first trip. Focus on the fun everyone is having rather than the fish they are (or aren’t) catching. Some youngsters might just be thrilled to spend a day out on the water with their parents. Encourage that enthusiasm and kids are more likely to remember their first fishing trips fondly. Break time Kids might not have a full day of fishing in them on their first trip. Frequent breaks to explore nearby nature, enjoy a snack or even toss a ball around can keep children from growing bored throughout the day. Fishing is a family-friendly activity that youngsters can enjoy from the moment they first pick up a rod.

Small Game Hunting Successful Squirrel Hunter"Small game" includes upland and migratory game birds, small game mammals (e.g., squirrel, rabbit), furbearers (e.g., fox, coyote), and reptiles and amphibians. Game species may be taken only during their open seasons. Hunters taking wildlife on licensed shooting preserves must comply with regulations governing those shooting preserves. To enhance the small game hunting experience, the Department has several programs to either keep accurate counts of takes or raise and release species to increase hunting opportunity. Among the programs in place are required reporting of turkey take, Pheasant Release Program and Grouse and Woodcock Hunting Log. To learn more about these and specifics of the hunting regulations, go to the DEC website or contact DEC for a copy of the NYS Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide for the current year. Learn about DEC's Young Forest Initiative, which will dramatically increase young forest habitat for popular game species like American Woodcock and Ruffed Grouse on Wildlife Management Areas.

Protected Wildlife In New York State, nearly all species of wildlife are protected. Most species, including endangered species, songbirds, hawks and owls are fully protected and may not be taken. The few unprotected species include porcupine, red squirrel, woodchuck, English sparrow, starling, rock pigeon, and monk parakeet. Unprotected species may be taken at any time without limit. A hunting license is required to hunt unprotected wildlife with a bow, crossbow, or firearm. General Small Game Regulations You may not use a rifle or handgun to hunt pheasant or migratory game birds. You may not take a turkey with a rifle, or with a handgun firing a bullet. You may hunt turkey with a shotgun or handgun only when using shot no larger than #2 and no smaller than #8. Air guns may be used to hunt squirrels, rabbits, hares, ruffed grouse, and furbearers that may be hunted (e.g., raccoons and coyotes) and unprotected species. Air guns may not be used to hunt waterfowl, pheasant, wild turkey, or big game. A bow or crossbow may be used to hunt small game. A crossbow may not be used in Westchester or Suffolk counties. See Crossbow Hunting for additional information.

Turkey Hunting Regulations General Information A turkey permit and a hunting license are required while hunting wild turkey. You may buy only one turkey permit per year. If you have filled your bag limit, you may call turkeys for another hunter, but you may not carry a bow or firearm. If you have taken a turkey which is unfit for consumption, authorized DEC staff may issue a special permit to take another. You will have to surrender the carcass. Call your local wildlife or law enforcement office. Manner of Taking You must carry your hunting license and turkey permit while you hunt. You may hunt with a bow or crossbow. You may not hunt turkey with a crossbow in the fall in the Northern Zone if you are using dogs. You may hunt with a shotgun or handgun only when using shot no larger than #2 and no smaller than #8. You may use a muzzleloading shotgun. You may not take a turkey with a rifle, or with a handgun firing a bullet. You may not hunt with a dog during the spring season. You may hunt with a dog during the fall season. You may not use bait to hunt turkey. You may not use an electronic calling or amplifying device to locate or hunt turkeys during the open season. You may use decoys. A scope of any type is allowed. Spring Turkey Season In the spring you may take two bearded birds. You may only take one bird per day. Immediately after taking a turkey, fill out the carcass tag and attach it to the bird. You do not need to save and send in turkey legs in the spring. You do need to take careful spur, beard, and weight measurements for reporting. Spur measurements: spurs should be measured from the tip of the spur to the base of the spur, where it emerges from the scaly part of the leg. Measure to the nearest 1/4 inch. Do not measure to the forward edge of the leg, only to the base of the spur. Beard Measurements: beards should be measured from the tip of the beard to the base, where it emerges from the skin. Butt the end of your ruler against the base of the beard and extend the beard along the body of the ruler. Measure to the nearest 1/4 inch. Record the weight to the nearest pound. Fall Turkey Season The statewide season bag limit is one bird of either sex. See the Turkey Season map for season dates. Immediately after taking a turkey, you must fill out the carcass tag in ink and attach it to the bird. If you take a turkey, save one of its legs. Return it in the leg envelope you will receive. The legs are used for age and sex information. You may not hunt turkey with a crossbow in the fall in the Northern Zone if you are using dogs.

Don’t Stalk Turkeys. It doesn’t work and it is dangerous. Never wear turkey colors - red, white or blue. Assume anything that sounds like a turkey is another turkey hunter. Call with a large tree at your back. If you see another hunter....DON’T MOVE. Never wave, whistle or make any turkey call or animal sound. Speak Up in a loud, clear voice to identify yourself. You’ll never buy store-bought again after trying this venison jerky recipe Yield: 2 pounds venison jerky Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 6 hours Ingredients: 4 pounds venison 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 2 teaspoons chili powder 2 teaspoons garlic powder 2 teaspoons onion powder 1 teaspoon Hungarian hot paprika, more if you want it hot 1 teaspoon liquid smoke ¼ cup packed brown sugar ¼ cup soy sauce ¼ cup teriyaki sauce ½ cup Worcestershire sauce 3 tablespoons hot sauce (or to taste) Directions: Trim fat from venison (if there is any) and slice into 4-inch strips. The venison pieces should be between

1/4 and 1/2 inch thick. It is easier to slice the venison if it is partially frozen. Pound meat lightly and set aside. Combine rest of ingredients and mix well. Pour this marinade over the venison strips. Cover and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, line cookie sheets with foil. Place venison strips on sheets – do not overlap meat. Preheat oven to 150-175 degrees, or the lowest temperature it has. Bake for 3 hours; turn venison strips over and bake for an additional 3 hours. Venison jerky is cooked when meat is dried out. Enjoy.

Atlantic Salmon Celebrated in the Lake Champlain Basin Grand Isle, VT – For just the third time in more than 150 years, scientists have found naturally-reproduced Atlantic salmon fry in the Lake Champlain Basin. The discovery this summer in the North Branch of the Boquet River in New York is an encouraging milestone for scientists and anglers. And it is timed perfectly, as the LCBP and partners celebrate the International Year of the Salmon. The LCBP is working this year with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum (LCMM), and other partners to showcase the “Salmosphere” and to highlight the role of salmon in the history of the region and efforts to restore this important fishery. Dr. Eric Howe, LCBP Director, said, “The International Year of the Salmon comes at an exciting time for Atlantic salmon restoration in the Lake Champlain Basin. The recent confirmation of natural reproduction and new advances in restoration science are good reason to celebrate this magnificent species.” Andrew Milliken, USFWS Project Leader for the Lake Champlain Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office said, "We are thrilled to celebrate the return of natural reproduction of salmon in the Champlain Basin during the International Year of the Salmon and recognize the cooperative efforts of many partners that have worked for many years to make it happen." The July discovery of fry in the Boquet comes three years

after the first natural salmon reproduction was confirmed in the Winooski River after a long absence in the Basin. Atlantic salmon were once abundant in local waters. Colonial-era reports share stories of horses refusing to cross salmon-clogged streams and of soldiers harvesting the spawning fish with pitchforks. But by the mid-1800s, the fish were gone, victims of dams that blocked access to spawning areas, habitat destruction, and other human pressures. A number of commemorative events are sharing this history and the story of recovery across the Lake Champlain basin in 2019: • The LCBP and USFWS developed a series of traveling exhibits that interpret the life cycle, history, and efforts to restore salmon in the Basin. The exhibits are on display at more than a dozen venues throughout the year, and are available for loan. • The LCMM’s replica canal schooner Lois McClure shared the history, ecology, and conservation story of the Atlantic salmon in Lake Champlain on its 2019 voyage around the lake. The interpretive exhibits are traveling with the schooner, which will be open for tours at the museum in Vergennes, VT in August. • The LCBP, USFWS and Peregrine Productions partnered to produce Bringing Back Salmon, a three-part video series that chronicles Atlantic salmon restoration efforts in the Basin, including the removal the Willsboro Dam on

the Boquet River, advances in restoration science, and the mutual benefits of salmon restoration and water quality improvement. • The LCBP also has developed a National Park Service Passport for collectors and a trivia challenge based on the traveling interpretive exhibit. Participants can earn a special-edition, International Year of the Salmon coin. • Two salmon-focused “missions” that use the educational Agents of Discovery App are available at the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge in Swanton, VT and the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. • A Salmon Festival is planned for October 5, 2019 in Richmond, Vermont. The day-long celebration will include talks on salmon restoration and conservation, salmonthemed videos, a guided paddle on the Winooski River, a

stocking of fall fingerling salmon, and fly-casting lessons. These efforts to commemorate the International Year of the Salmon recognize and depend on the work of the Lake Champlain Fish and Wildlife Management Cooperative. This partnership between USFWS, Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, New York State DEC, and other state agencies, universities, and research organizations have worked to restore salmon in Lake Champlain since the early 1970s. Many anglers, educators, and conservationists also have worked tirelessly to restore the Atlantic salmon fishery in Lake Champlain. Ice Fishing Techniques Jigging If you are using an ice fishing rod and hook-and-line while ice fishing, then a good technique to try is jigging. You can use lures or live bait while jigging. Follow these simple steps to practice this technique: • Drop your line and let your jig hook sink to the bottom. • Then slowly (very slowly) raise your bait up about a foot off the bottom. • You can jig up and down, side to side or up and down and sideways. • If you are moving your bait too much or too fast, the fish may think it is not worth the effort to go after it. Jigging works best for smaller fish like panfish.

tor. When a fish takes the bait, the reel turns and releases the line and flag at the same time. The flag "tips up" alerting the angler something is on the line. Tip-ups work best with heavier braided line and a larger lure, and typically attract larger game fish. • Once your tip-up is set up on the surface above your hole, drop your line in the water until it hits the bottom (usually stirring up the water). • Then raise the line slightly above the floor. • The line can either remain still or if you are not in a shelter, the wind can provide a natural jigging movement. Many anglers try all techniques simultaneously to see which works best for that particular body of water, the species available and the conditions of the season. If you plan to use multiple fishing rods or tip-ups, make sure you check the regulations from your state agency as some have limits on the numbers of rods an ice angler can use, or require permits. Clothing for Ice Fishing These are some basic items for warmth to bring on your next ice fishing trip. • Layered clothing. Staying warm and dry is important. Do not skip this step, even if you bring a heater. A moisture-wisking base layer, an insulated, wind-breaking middle layer, and a breathable outer shell are recommended. Changing weather conditions or a heater that quits working could end your day early if you aren’t prepared. • Insulated boots. Wearing moisture-wicking liner socks under warm socks and good boots can keep you comfortable. • Scarf, hat and gloves. Keeping your hands and ears warm will help you keep your whole body warm. It’s also good to bring an extra pair of gloves in case you get the other pair wet. • Ice cleats. These allow you to maintain traction, even on slick ice to keep your balance. • Ice safety picks. Wear safety picks (short plastic rods with medal picks) around your neck in case of an emergency. They are very useful if you fall in as you can quickly grab them to help you grip the ice.

General Ice Fishing Methods

Pike/Pickerel Use tip-ups baited with minnows in shallow (5-15 feet) water around or over weed beds. Pike usually prefer large (4-7 inch) minnows. Set your minnow 2 to 3 feet off the bottom or high enough so your bait is above any weeds. Pike and pickerel have sharp teeth, so a wire leader is recommended. Sunfish Sunfish can usually be found over or on the edge of weed beds in 15 feet of water or less. Try jigging with small jigs tipped with spikes from a few feet under the ice to just off the bottom until fish are found. Perch Perch can be found close to the bottom in a variety of locations from shallow weed beds less than 10 feet deep to flats in 40 feet of water. Try setting tip-ups baited with small minnows or jigging with small jigs tipped with spikes. Walleye Look for walleye around points, flats and shoals. Fishing is often best just before and after dark. Fish within a foot of the bottom. Jig with jigging spoons tipped with a minnow or use tip-ups with 3-4 inch minnows. Crappie Crappies may be found along weed edges or suspended in the water column anywhere from a few feet under the ice to within inches of the bottom. Jig with small minnows or small jigs tipped with spikes. Fishing for crappie can be very good after dark. Trout Trout can be found around points, drop offs or humps. Unlike the open-water seasons when they avoid warm shallow water, trout can be found anywhere from just under the ice to just off the bottom. Set tip-ups at a variety of depths until fish are found. Fish tip-ups baited with minnows and jig with jigging spoons tipped with minnows.
