Plattsburgh, NY. Attracting sailboats from throughout the northeast and Quebec, racers face a “no guts, no glory” competition known, since 1978, for its spirited fun and, sometimes, high-seas adventure. When skippers, who compete around the world, claim Lake Champlain as “sailing at its best,” we know our waterfront treasure is no fools gold! Kids and Family Activities We look forward to having you join us this year for wonderful events for you and your family.

UPPER SARANAC LAKE the largest of the Saranacs, offers 37 miles of shoreline and stirring views of the distant High Peaks, as well as 20 primitive campsites available on a first come basis. The numerous ponds to the west of the lake are ideal for short paddles, or as starting points for longer trips into the Saranacs.
578 State Route 3, Plattsburgh, NY 518-561-7689 www.unos.com
MIDDLE SARANAC LAKE features numerous islands and some of the finest natural beaches in the area. Paddle north to Weller Pond, a lovely and secluded wilderness pond. There are five campsites on Weller Pond and twenty on Middle Saranac, both on islands and on the shore. LOWER SARANAC LAKE is our favorite for family day trips, with numerous access points and convenient boat and canoe rentals. Given its proximity to the village of Saranac Lake downtown is one mile from Ampersand Bay, the Lower Lake is ideal for easy day tripping. One popular trip begins in Lower Saranac, continues down the Saranac River, through Oseetah Lake and Lake Flower to the boat launch downtown. For overnight excursions, there are over 55 campsites located on the islands and on shore. NOTE: The 87 campsites on Lower and Middle Saranac Lakes comprise the Saranac Lake Island State Campground, maintained by the New York State DEC. All sites are accessible by boat only, and there is a fee for camping on these sites. Reservations may be made via the internet at ReserveAmerica.com. Or by Calling 800/456-2267.
586 State Route 3, Plattsburgh, NY 518-324-1100 www.plattsburghsuites.hamptoninn.com THE ST. REGIS CANOE AREA A pond hopper’s paradise located approximately 15 miles northwest of the village of Saranac Lake. The St. Regis is the largest wilderness canoe area in the Northeast U.S., offering some of the most stirring and serene paddling to be found anywhere. The Canoe Area is easily accessed, making for a great selection of half day, full day, and multi day excursions. We recommend the historic “Route Of The Seven Carries,” beginning at Little Clear Pond and ending at Upper St. Regis Lake. You can camp along the way, or do the trip in an easy day! There are numerous primitive campsites throughout the Canoe Area which are available on a first come basis. Note that motor boats are not permitted on these waters.

Disc Golf (a.k.a. Frisbee golf)
Similar to golf, the object of Disc Golf is to complete each hole in as few throws – or strokes – as possible. Instead of using a golf club and ball, disc golfers use a flying disc to reach the hole. Each hole starts from a tee box and is completed once the disc lands in the “hole”, which is a disc-catching target. While Disc Golf can be played with just one disc, discs are designed to fly with different characteristics. Different discs can be used to hook and curve around trees or other obstacles, roll on the ground, or fly over trees. Disc Golf is an inexpensive outdoor activity for everyone from school aged to golden aged. Discs can be purchased for as little as $8 each and they last forever….unless you lose one in the trees! Cadyville Disc Golf Course 16 Rec Parkway Cadyville, NY. The course is on flat terrain with some woods but mainly open. It is the first year-round course developed north of Saratoga in New York State. It is an 18 hole course. Come and check out. There are no fees to play the course. We are offering a disc golf loan program where you can stop by our office and borrow discs for up to one week. You will need to leave a $20 deposit for the discs, but you get it back when the discs return. Please, call us at 5626860 to check on the availability of discs. The Village of Champlain has a nine hole disc golf course. The course is available to all residents and visitors. It is adjacent to the park area on River Street which
has picnic tables and barbecue grills, and will be open on a year round basis for the enjoyment of all. Ausable Chasm Disc Golf Course located at the Ausable Chasm Campground and Recreation Center in a dense pine forest. The course starts with two fairly open holes, then finishes through heavy woods. Two sets of tee boxes at each of the 9 “holes” make it easy enough for kids and beginners and challenging enough for advanced disc golfers. Play is free for campers and day guests may purchase a Rec Center day pass for $5 ($25 season pass) which includes access to the mountain bike trails and campground pool. Disc rentals and sales are available at the campground lodge. Complimentary lessons as well as a beginner friendly tournament every Saturday in the summer. Call the campground for more information at 518834-9990. Twin Ponds Campground & Disc Golf Course Private Course 18 Holes Some open holes on the front and densely wooded on the back with some water holes! Bike Paths & Trails Biking Trails, Paths & Routes - There are many great trails and pathways in the Adirondacks that are specifically for biking. Below is a small sampling of some of the road and mountain trails: Pine Pond, Lake Placid Area Possibly Lake Placid’s most popular trail, Pine Pond is a 14-mile round trip that takes you to a great swimming hole. Bloomingdale Bog, Saranac Lake Area An elevated, sandy pathway with many open views that utilizes an abandoned D&H railroad right-of-way and bisects a plant-rich bog community. About 8 miles one way. Brewster Peninsula Nature Trails, Lake Placid A compact network of easy trails traversing gently rolling terrain and winding through a mixed forest and along the shore of Lake Placid. A brochure is available from the DEC, or you can contact a local bike shop or chamber of commerce for more information Hayes Brook Truck Trail, Paul Smiths Region A 7.2-mile round trip on wide dirt roads traverses a pine plantation and forest and leads to an old sheep meadow. Spur trails lead to Hayes Brook and to a lean-to on Grassy Pond. Contact a local bike shop or chamber of commerce for more information Flume Falls Trails, Wilmington Mountain biking trails in Wilmington (near Whiteface Mountain). Dirt roads and single track of varying degrees of difficulty, these trails connect with the Whiteface Mountain trail system. Jackrabbit Trail Trails along the railroad tracks, on an extension of the Jackrabbit Trail, and behind the parking lot where the tracks cross Route 86 between Saranac Lake and Ray Brook. The Peninsula Trails An easy access trail in Lake Placid with a variety of difficulty levels and swimming opportunities. The main trail brings you right to the shores of the lake. Connery Pond Truck Road A short dirt road suitable for all ability levels. Part of this Adirondack bike trail is in the Wilderness area and is closed to ATBs. Lake Champlain Bikeways An 1,100 mile network of interconnected bicycle routes, this route stretches from the southern Adirondacks and the Vermont Green Mountains, all the way north to Quebec, Canada. Originally a 350 mile loop around Lake Champlain, this extensive network of trails offers shorter biking routes with varying degrees of difficulty to satisfy the whole family. This trail system includes four ferry crossings, and two bridge crossings. River Forks Trail Traveling upon back roads from Jay to AuSable Forks this loop provides views of the Jay Range and the convergence of both East and West Branches of the AuSable River at Continued page 60

AuSable Forks. Adirondack Marathon Trail As the name implies, the loop follows the Adirondack Marathon course established in 1997. It’s all-paved and generally flat-to-gently rolling. You will, however encounter a hilly section between mile four (4) and mile twelve (12). Traffic is generally minimal. When you arrive in the hamlet of Adirondack, don’t forget to stop at the General Store for refreshments. A good start/end point is in downtown Schroon Lake, where food, parking, and visitor information is available. Fort to Fort This flat, all-paved tour follows the Champlain Bikeway between Crown Point State Historic Site at the bridge to Vermont and Fort Ticonderoga in Ticonderoga. Traffic is generally minimal. A recommended start/end point is at the Lake Champlain Visitors Center at the bridge. At either end, plan on touring these world renowned Revolutionary War historic sites. Food, lodging, and parking are available in both Ticonderoga and Crown Point. Iron to Iron This hilly ride is for advanced riders looking for a good workout. Be prepared for some occasional stretches of unpaved road surfaces; a cross-bike is recommended. Traffic is generally minimal. A recommended start/end point is at the Iron Center, near the Amtrak Station in Port Henry or at the Penfield Museum in Ironville. Food and lodging are available in the Port Henry/Moriah area. Wet & Wild This day-long ride takes in two of the most remote paved roads in the Adirondacks. Grades become gentle after a hilly climb out of Moriah Corners and the route winds through woodland and open marshlands. Traffic is generally minimal. A recommended start/end point is at the Iron Center, near the Amtrak Station in Port Henry. Food and lodging are available in the Port Henry/Moriah area. Coon Mountain Circuit For those wanting to combine cycling and hiking, this route is your ticket. Near the half-way point on Halds Road is the trailhead to Coon Mountain. A short hike up affords breathtaking views of Lake Champlain and the surrounding valley. With the exception of a short section along Route 22, the route has little traffic. Terrain is rolling. A recommended start/end point is in the hamlet of Essex, where food, lodging, parking and the ferry are available. Or, bicyclists can start/end in Westport, which also has food, lodging, and parking, as well as an Amtrak station. If starting from Westport, take Route 22 north to County 9, and at the top of the first hill take Sherman Road to Halds Road. Return to Westport on County 9. Rolling Reber Ramble As the name implies, the route is rolling, especially through the woodlands along Reber and Mountain Roads (be pre-

pared for the occasional steep hill). Traffic is minimal with the exception of Route 22, and where frequent trucks carry wollastonite on the short stretch of County Route 57 between Jersey and Mountain View Roads. (Wollastonite trucks use Mountain View, Route 57, and Stowersville Roads during the work week.) A recommended start/end point is in the hamlet of Willsboro, where food, lodging, and parking are available. Surrounded by Water The route travels around Willsboro Point, offering plenty of views of Lake Champlain. The only steep hill is immediately north of the bridge over the Boquet River on Route 22. All roads are paved except for a 1/2 mile section. When traveling around the Point, be vigilant of vehicles pulling boat trailers. A recommended start/end point is in the hamlet of Willsboro, where food, lodging, and parking are available. Northern Adirondack Coast Bikeways Acres of Apples As the name suggests, Acres of Apples winds through a magnificent apple country landscape of orchards and farms. The loop is all-paved and flat-to-gently rolling with two steep hills within the first mile of the loop. Traffic is generally minimal. A good start/end point is the Port Kent ferry dock where food and parking are available. Food is also available along the route at one of the many farmstands and restaurants.

Adirondack Canoeing And Rafting UPPER SARANAC LAKE the largest of the Saranacs, offers 37 miles of shoreline and stirring views of the distant High Peaks, as well as 20 primitive campsites available on a first come basis. The numerous ponds to the west of the lake are ideal for short paddles, or as starting points for longer trips into the Saranacs. LOWER SARANAC LAKE great for family day trips, with numerous access points and convenient boat and canoe rentals. All sites are ac-
cessible by boat only, and there is a fee for camping on these sites. Reservations may be made via the internet at ReserveAmerica.com. Or by Calling 800/456-2267. KAYAK SLALOM COURSE The Saranac River, Whitewater Practice Area Located just below the Lake Flower Dam is a 500 foot long man-made Cass I (moving water) rapid, accessed from the canoe launch in the village municipal parking lot. The Adirondack Paddlers Club maintains the site with 10 to 15 slalom gates and holds weekly training sessions Wednesdays at 5 p.m. and sponsors a slalom race in May and youth kayaking programs in July and August. The area is open to the public and free of charge. The gates are up April through October. Contact Jim Sausville at 891-2062 for more information. THE ST. REGIS CANOE AREA - A pond hopper’s paradise located approximately 15 miles northwest of the village of Saranac Lake. Regis

White Water Rafting
The best way to experience whitewater rafting in Lake Placid is a trip through the Hudson River Gorge with an experienced outfitter and a licensed Guide. With a history of transporting timber from the forests to the mills in Glens Falls, these rapids now transport thousands of exuberant whitewater rafting guests through one of the premier rafting trips in the Northeast each year. Rafting companies have been guiding rafting enthusiasts through the beautiful gorge for decades.

The excitement of the trip may vary with the water level and the season, but the beauty of this place that can only truly be appreciated from the river never changes. Trips leave from either Indian Lake, or North Creek. Both are just a short drive from Lake Placid. Depending on the conditions there may be choices for milder trips on lower sections of the River or wilder trips on other rivers. Some outfitters offer fishing trips as well as multi-day adventures.
Lake. You can camp along the way, or do the trip in an easy day! There are numerous primitive campsites throughout the Canoe Area which are available on a first come basis. Note that motor boats are not permitted on these waters. SARANAC RIVER: The Saranac offers an enjoyable and easily accessible variety of excursions. From two canoe launches in the village, it is an easy, meandering paddle to any number of take outs downstream, along NY 3. RAQUETTE RIVER: A gentle, scenic river, offering a number of charming campsites, many with lean to’s (3-sided log shelters). From Saranac Lake, access can be found either at Axton Landing (3 miles south of Upper Saranac Lake) or through a state launch site 16 miles west of the village on NY 3 & 30. Travel With Your Pet the Smart Way
Individuals often view their pets as extended members of the family. People want to bring their pets along on vacations or while traveling to visit family and friends. Until recently, it was more difficult to travel with dogs and cats. But as more and more hotel chains recognize the strong connection between people and pets, those chains are growing increasingly flexible in hosting four-legged guests. For those who will be traveling with pets, there is a right and wrong way to do so. Having a plan of action is essential to safeguard the safety and comfort of all involved. * Establish the travel method and route in advance. Go online or scour travel maps to determine the best route to your destination. Depending on the length of travel, layovers may be needed to sleep, refuel and simply stretch the legs. Determine which areas will be safe for walking a dog roadside, and look for rest stops with areas to exercise pets. Faithful, loving, loyal and true. The High Peaks area continues to see increasing numbers of hikers, increased congestion and decreasing opportunities for solitude. While the rising number of visitors to these areas has resulted in trail erosion and damage to vegetation in heavily used areas, many nearby areas continue to see relatively light use, less trail damage and improved opportunities for solitude. The following hikes offer excellent opportunities for hikers preferring to seek alternates to many of the high use trails in the High Peaks Wilderness. Baker Mountain Moody Pond Road, Village of Saranac Lake: 0.9 mile one-way. This trail offers outstanding views of the Saranac Lakes, the High Peaks and McKenzie Mountain Range. Baxter Mountain Located 2.0 miles east of intersection of NYS Routes 73 and 9N at the top of the hill.
