UPPER SARANAC LAKE the largest of the Saranacs, offers 37 miles of shoreline and stirring views of the distant High Peaks, as well as 20 primitive campsites available on a first come basis. The numerous ponds to the west of the lake are ideal for short paddles, or as starting points for longer trips into the Saranacs. MIDDLE SARANAC LAKE features numerous islands and some of the finest natural beaches in the area. Paddle north to Weller Pond, a lovely and secluded wilderness pond. There are five campsites on Weller Pond and twenty on Middle Saranac, both on islands and on the shore. LOWER SARANAC LAKE is our favorite for family day trips, with numerous access points and convenient boat and canoe rentals. Given its proximity to the village of Saranac Lake downtown is one mile from Ampersand Bay, the Lower Lake is ideal for easy day tripping. One popular trip begins in Lower Saranac, continues down the Saranac River, through Oseetah Lake and Lake Flower to the boat launch downtown. For overnight excursions, there are over 55 campsites located on the islands and on shore. NOTE: The 87 campsites on Lower and Middle Saranac Lakes comprise the Saranac Lake Island State Campground, maintained by the New York State DEC. All sites are accessible by boat only, and there is a fee for camping on these sites. Reservations may be made via the internet at ReserveAmerica.com. Or by Calling 800/456-2267.

REGIS CANOE AREA A pond hopper’s paradise located approximately 15 miles northwest of the village of Saranac Lake. The St. Regis is the largest wilderness canoe area in the Northeast U.S., offering some of the most stirring and serene paddling to be found anywhere. The Canoe Area is easily accessed, making for a great selection of half day, full day, and multi day excursions. We recommend the historic “Route Of The Seven Carries,” beginning at Little Clear Pond and ending at Upper St. Regis Lake. You can camp along the way, or do the trip in an easy day! There are numerous primitive campsites throughout the Canoe Area which are available on a first come basis. Note that motor boats are not permitted on these waters.

Call for Reservations & Information

• A new “registered witness” category. All fish caught during the event must be witnessed by another person registered for the event (who understands and agrees to event rules). Last year, several anglers did not participate because they, understandably, did not want to spend three days fishing with someone from another household. An adult member of a registered Vol. 7 No. 1 | North Country Living Magazine | 29

angler’s household with the same residential address may register for $25.00 and serve as a witness-only. • New “Youth Division”. Anglers 14 years of age and under (as of June 4, 2021), who pay a $20.00 fee will be eligible to compete with other youth for prizes separate from the open competition. These prizes will be based on the pool of registration fees from the youth participants. Youth can compete in the open competition by choosing to pay the $50.00 registration fee. • Weigh Station closing times. The Rotary club will strive to keep all five weigh stations open until 8:00 p.m., but this will depend on the number of Rotarians and friends of Rotary who volunteer. In the past, only Rotarians have staffed the weigh stations. Due to COVID, we are encouraging Rotarians to staff weigh stations with family members or other persons from their “pods,” expanding our pool of volunteers. Anglers participating in the Classic will need to keep posted on the closing times for the weigh stations as this is not a promise, but a goal. • Online Updates. We expect to offer direct online options to anglers on leaderboard contenders and other important information during the tournament. Details are still being worked out, so look for the option when you register on-line for the tournament. We will continue to share standings via Facebook, the 1-800-FishLine and marine radio as in the past. • Merchandise. T-shirts will once again be available for $10.00 per shirt (with a new logo and color) and we will be adding caps this year! Shirts and caps ordered by May 21st will be mailed directly to registrants. They will also be available for purchase and pickup at weigh stations. • 50/50 Raffle. We will sell 50/50 tickets for $5.00 at weigh stations all weekend, giving registered anglers and witnesses another chance to win. • Announcement of awards. Last year we eliminated our awards ceremony and the requirement that winners had to appear in person to collect their prizes. Once again, winners at this year’s Classic will be announced on Facebook live, a final FISHLINE recording, a marine radio announcement and press release. Checks will be mailed to winners. For more information contact Tournament Chair Peter Cadieux at 518-569-2188 or rotaryfishclassic@ gmail.com.

Bike Paths & Trails

Continued from page 13

AuSable Forks. Adirondack Marathon Trail As the name implies, the loop follows the Adirondack Marathon course established in 1997. It’s allpaved and generally flat-to-gently rolling. You will, however encounter a hilly section between mile four (4) and mile twelve (12). Traffic is generally minimal. When you arrive in the hamlet of Adirondack, don’t forget to stop at the General Store for refreshments. A good start/end point is in downtown Schroon Lake, where food, parking, and visitor information is available. Fort to Fort This flat, all-paved tour follows the Champlain Bikeway between Crown Point State Historic Site at the bridge to Vermont and Fort Ticonderoga in Ticonderoga. Traffic is generally minimal. A recommended start/end point is at the Lake Champlain Visitors Center at the bridge. At either end, plan on touring these world renowned Revolutionary War historic sites. Food, lodging, and parking are available in both Ticonderoga and Crown Point. Iron to Iron This hilly ride is for advanced riders looking for a good workout. Be prepared for some occasional stretches of unpaved road surfaces; a cross-bike is recommended. Traffic is generally minimal. A recommended start/end point is at the Iron Center, near the Amtrak Station in Port Henry or at the Penfield Museum in Ironville. Food and lodging are available in the Port Henry/Moriah area. Wet & Wild This day-long ride takes in two of the most remote paved roads in the Adirondacks. Grades become gentle after a hilly climb out of Moriah Corners and the route winds through woodland and open marshlands. Traffic is generally minimal. A recommended start/ end point is at the Iron Center, near the Amtrak Station in Port Henry. Food and lodging are available in the Port Henry/Moriah area. Coon Mountain Circuit For those wanting to combine cycling and hiking, this route is your ticket. Near the half-way point on Halds Road is the trailhead to Coon Mountain. A short hike up affords breathtaking views of Lake Champlain and the surrounding valley. With the exception of a short section along Route 22, the route has little

traffic. Terrain is rolling. A recommended start/end point is in the hamlet of Essex, where food, lodging, parking and the ferry are available. Or, bicyclists can start/end in Westport, which also has food, lodging, and parking, as well as an Amtrak station. If starting from Westport, take Route 22 north to County 9, and at the top of the first hill take Sherman Road to Halds Road. Return to Westport on County 9. Rolling Reber Ramble As the name implies, the route is rolling, especially through the woodlands along Reber and Mountain Roads (be prepared for the occasional steep hill). Traffic is minimal with the exception of Route 22, and where frequent trucks carry wollastonite on the short stretch of County Route 57 between Jersey and Mountain View Roads. (Wollastonite trucks use Mountain View, Route 57, and Stowersville Roads during the work week.) A recommended start/end point is in the hamlet of Willsboro, where food, lodging, and parking are available. Surrounded by Water The route travels around Willsboro Point, offering plenty of views of Lake Champlain. The only steep hill is immediately north of the bridge over the Boquet River on Route 22. All roads are paved except for a 1/2 mile section. When traveling around the Point, be vigilant of vehicles pulling boat trailers. A recommended start/end point is in the hamlet of Willsboro, where food, lodging, and parking are available. Northern Adirondack Coast Bikeways Acres of Apples As the name suggests, Acres of Apples winds through a magnificent apple country landscape of orchards and farms. The loop is all-paved and flat-to-gently rolling with two steep hills within the first mile of the loop. Traffic is generally minimal. A good start/ end point is the Port Kent ferry dock where food and parking are available. Food is also available along the route at one of the many farmstands and restaurants.

Hiking Trails The High Peaks area continues to see increasing numbers of hikers, increased congestion and decreasing opportunities for solitude. While the rising number of visitors to these areas has resulted in trail erosion and damage to vegetation in heavily used areas, many nearby areas continue to see relatively light use, less trail damage and improved opportunities for solitude. The following hikes offer excellent opportunities for hikers preferring to seek alternates to many of the high use trails in the High Peaks Wilderness. Baker Mountain Moody Pond Road, Village of Saranac Lake: 0.9 mile one-way. This trail offers outstanding views of the Saranac Lakes, the High Peaks and McKenzie Mountain Range. Baxter Mountain Located 2.0 miles east of intersection of NYS Routes 73 and 9N at the top of the hill. The trail is south of Route 9N, 60 feet east of the intersection with Hurricane Road. 1.0 mile one-way. It offers good views of Dix, Giant and High Peaks Wilderness Areas. Cooperkiln Pond From NYS Route 86 in Wilmington, go 2.8 miles up Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway to the junction with Franklin Falls Road, on the right, thence 0.7 mile on Franklin Falls Road to the trailhead on the right. Cooperkiln Pond is 2.7 miles one-way from the trailhead. Floodwood Mountain NYS Route 30, between Fish Creek Ponds and Saranac Inn. Follow the FloodwoodDerrick Road 7.4 miles and turn left onto Floodwood Boy

Scout Reservation Road and continue 0.2 mile to the parking area. The trail is 1.7 miles one way to the summit. The trail offers good autumn views of the High Peaks, the Saranac Lakes, and Tupper Lake. Giant Mountain Access is rom NYS Route 9N; the trail is located 4.5 miles west of Elizabethtown, on the south side of the highway. This is a nice, easy-to-moderate 2.6 mile one-way hike to Owl’s Head overlook. Giant Mountain summit is an additional hike of 4.8 miles from the overlook. The total trip from the trailhead is 7.4 miles. Access from NYS Route 9, referred to as the East Trail to Rocky Peak Ridge and Giant Summit. The trail starts at a parking lot 4.9 miles north of the junction with Route 73. This is a rugged 8.0 mile one-way trip to Giant summit, but it has three great intermediate points: Blueberry Cobbles, at 2.0 miles; Bald Peak, at 3.9 miles and Rocky Peak Ridge at 6.7 miles. Hammond Pond A single trailhead provides access to Ber rymill Flow-Moose Mountain Pond, Hammond Pond, Challis Pond and Bass Lake. From I-87, Exit 29 (North Hudson), follow NYS Route 9 north to County Road 44 (Moriah-North Hudson Road), thence east 2.9 miles to the trailhead located on the right. One-way distances, depending on location, vary from 0.6 mile to 3.5 miles, on easy to moderate grades. Hayes Brook Located 3.7 miles Northwest of Paul Smiths College, on the right side of NYS Route 30. Easy access, adjacent to Mountain Pond. A mix of old roads and trails, Continued page 20

Adirondack Canoeing And Rafting UPPER SARANAC LAKE the largest of the Saranacs, offers 37 miles of shoreline and stirring views of the distant High Peaks, as well as 20 primitive campsites available on a first come basis. LOWER SARANAC LAKE great for family day trips, with numerous access points and convenient boat and canoe rentals. All sites are ac-

cessible by boat only, and there is a fee for camping on these sites. Reservations may be made via the internet at ReserveAmerica.com. Or by Calling 800/456-2267. KAYAK SLALOM COURSE The Saranac River, Whitewater Practice Area Located just below the Lake Flower Dam is a 500 foot long man-made Cass I (moving water) rapid, accessed from the canoe launch in the village municipal parking lot. The Adirondack Paddlers Club maintains the site with 10 to 15 slalom gates and holds weekly training sessions Wednesdays at 5 p.m. and sponsors a slalom race in May and youth kayaking programs in July and August. The area is open to the public and free of charge. The gates are up April through October. Contact Jim Sausville at 891-2062 for more information. THE ST. REGIS CANOE AREA - A pond hopper’s paradise located approximately 15 miles northwest of the village of Saranac Lake. Regis

Lake. You can camp along the way, or do the trip in an easy day! There are numerous primitive campsites throughout the Canoe Area which are available on a first come basis. Note that motor boats are not permitted on these waters. SARANAC RIVER: The Saranac offers an enjoyable and easily accessible variety of excursions. From two canoe launches in the village, it is an easy, meandering paddle to any number of take outs downstream, along NY 3. RAQUETTE RIVER: A gentle, scenic river, offering a number of charming campsites, many with lean to’s (3-sided log shelters). From Saranac Lake, access can be found either at Axton Landing (3 miles south of Upper Saranac Lake) or through a state launch site 16 miles west of the village on NY 3 & 30. Downstream lies Tupper Lake, while upstream are Raquette Falls, and Long Lake.

The excitement of the trip may vary with the water level and the season, but the beauty of this place that can only truly be appreciated from the river never changes. Trips leave from either Indian Lake, or North Creek. Both are just a short drive from Lake Placid. Depending on the conditions there may be choices for milder trips on lower sections of the River or wilder trips on other rivers. Some outfitters offer fishing trips as well as multi-day adventures.

White Water Rafting

The best way to experience whitewater rafting in Lake Placid is a trip through the Hudson River Gorge with an experienced outfitter and a licensed Guide. With a history of transporting timber from the forests to the mills in Glens Falls, these rapids now transport thousands of exuberant whitewater rafting guests through one of the premier rafting trips in the Northeast each year. Rafting companies have been guiding rafting enthusiasts through the beautiful gorge for decades.

Lake Champlain Basin Program

A VIBRANT REGION

Ringed by mountains and fertile lowlands, the Champlain Valley is filled with water carried from the surrounding land by a large network of rivers and streams. Rain and melting snow cascade down the rugged peaks of the Adirondacks, meander through the fields of Québec, and roll through the hills and mountains of Vermont. These tributaries, and their associated lakes and ponds, drain a far-flung watershed known as the Lake Champlain Basin. At 8,234 square miles, this drainage area is remarkably large, measuring 19 times larger than the surface area of the Lake itself. With waters in New York and Vermont in the United States, and the Province of Québec in Canada, Lake Champlain crosses political boundaries and unites a culturally diverse area. Beginning near Whitehall, New York, the Lake flows north over 100 miles to the Canadian border and the outlet of the Richelieu River. The Richelieu then flows north to the St. Lawrence River, and onward to the Atlantic Ocean. Lake Champlain’s natural resources and connectivity with other waterways have long made it an ideal location for human settlement and trade. Since the arrival of the first Native peoples, the history of the region has been inseparable from the Lake. Today, more than 600,000 people live in the Lake Champlain Basin and millions visit each year to enjoy its waters and other natural and historic features. The Champlain Basin is covered with a patchwork of natural and human communities; a landscape in constant change. The watershed’s natural diversity includes significant freshwater wetlands, complex aquatic ecosystems, a world class fishery and abundant wildlife habitat. The waterways used by humans are also vital corridors and migration routes for animals including large mammals, fish and waterbirds. Many rare and endangered species of plants and animals also find habitat in the conservation areas and working lands of the Lake and Basin. The Lake’s intricate shoreline, measuring over 587 miles, features rocky bluffs, sand and cobble beaches, deltas and a variety of wetlands. More than 70 islands dot the waters, and numerous inlets and bays add to the complexity of the Lake’s narrow profile. At its deepest, the Lake plunges down 400 feet, with an average depth of 64 feet. The southernmost regions of the South Lake are much like a river, which widens into the scenic expanse of the Main Lake. At Malletts Bay, the Lake reaches its greatest width, stretching 12 miles across. To the north, the Champlain Islands define an area known as the Northeast Arm, and in the far northeastern corner are the shallow waters of Missisquoi Bay. Each lake segment has unique characteristics and water quality issues.

Culture of Stewardship A healthy Lake Champlain is integral to the region’s quality of life, providing drinking water, recreation, fish and wildlife, and scenery for residents and visitors to use and enjoy. These natural and cultural resources attract business, tourism, and a thriving cultural scene. For centuries, human activities on the land have also profoundly influenced the Lake. Pollution, overfishing, and dams have dramatically changed aquatic communities. The alteration of shorelines and rivers, the destruction of wetlands, and the arrival of nonnative species also have had an impact. Erosion and stormwater runoff bring sediments, fertilizers, and other pollutants into the water, with excess nutrients that can fuel the growth of unwanted plants and algae. Bacteria, toxins, airborne pollution, and climate change also threaten water quality and the Lake ecosystem.

Partnerships are working throughout the Basin to protect and restore Lake Champlain and its watershed. Efforts are underway to control stormwater and agricultural runoff, stabilize river channels and protect wildlife habitats. Other priorities include ecological restoration, management of aquatic invasive species, and reduction of toxins. Citizen participation, community education, and sound management are all essential to the success of these initiatives. Lake Champlain and its watershed have shaped our history, our communities, and our lives. The stewardship of a healthy Lake will help to create a sustainable future for all of the Lake Champlain Basin.

Travel With Your Pet the Smart Way

Individuals often view their pets as extended members of the family. People want to bring their pets along on vacations or while traveling to visit family and friends. Until recently, it was more difficult to travel with dogs and cats. But as more and more hotel chains recognize the strong connection between people and pets, those chains are growing increasingly flexible in hosting four-legged guests. For those who will be traveling with pets, there is a right and wrong way to do so. Having a plan of action is essential to safeguard the safety and comfort of all involved. * Establish the travel method and route in advance. Go online or scour travel maps to determine the best route to your destination. Depending on the length of travel, layovers may be needed to sleep, refuel and simply stretch the legs. Determine which areas will be safe for walking a dog roadside, and look for rest stops with areas to exercise pets. Experimenting with different routes virtually also enables travelers to choose the most direct, most scenic or another route that fits with their travel plans. Some GPS devices can also alert to lodging and traffic conditions.

Antiques - The Modern Day Treasure Hunt Author: Tom Lange In today’s world, everything that’s old can be described as antiques and generally speaking that’s quite true. A product is considered to be an antique if it is over a hundred years old or is rare enough to have some value. In other words, these are old items that are in limited supply. An antique is something collectible. It may be a piece

of antique furniture that you want to collect to enhance the look of a room, or a piece of antique pottery to decorate a corner cupboard, or some antique books, antique camera and photographs, antique jewelry, antique money, antique car, antique clocks, or antique watches that you want to hand down to your grandchildren but the items must be rare enough to be considered an antique. The others are just secondhand goods junk. Most people have a common misconception about an antique: the older they look, the more antique they must be. Appearance has nothing to do with it, just because a piece looks like it came out of grandma’s attic does not necessarily mean that it’s an antique. The value of an antique is based on demand due to suitability and limited supply. Most people become fascinated in an antique for two reasons; either they have an interest in collecting antique purely for personal enjoyment and are willing to shell out money for antique restoration or they inherited it from a family member. The most common are antique pottery, antique car, antique furniture,

antique books, antique camera and photographs, antique clocks, antique money, antique jewelry and antique watches. However they came about it, everyone wants to be sure of one thing that what they buy or inherit will escalate in value as time goes by. That is what antique collection is all about. There are two main principles that apply when collecting an antique: The first is to know everything that you can about the antique that interests you and second is to obtain them at the lowest possible price. Doing so will not only give you satisfaction and enjoyment, but at the same time you will also be assured that your investment will appreciate in value. Some people only developed an interest in antiques because they inherited an item or a whole house full of antiques from a relative. The dollar signs started to appear and they began their hunt for some antique appraisals and antique auctions. But what most failed to consider is that much of what Great Grandmother had is probably just junk, unless she was a seasoned collector who’s into antique restoration or an expert in antique appraisals. It’s true that people could have bought a piece of furniture to decorate their home a long time ago and that furniture, if it were of fine quality, would now be worth something. But only a professional appraiser can guarantee that, and appraising costs about $100150 an hour. So if you are keen on bringing your item in an antique auction and contemplating about asking someone how much an item is worth, be prepared to shell out a few bucks for the information. Appraisers charge so much because they shoulder the lion’s share for insurance companies and lawyers settling estates. Although appraising is not an exact science, it still requires an appraiser to do lots of research and then prepare a detailed report that’s acceptable in a court of law.

TRAVEL RESPONSIBLY Travel responsibly on designated waterways and launch your watercraft in designated areas. • Travel only in areas open to your type of boat. • Carry a Coast Guard approved life vest (PFD) for each person on board. • Always operate your boat at a safe speed. • Always have a designated lookout to keep an eye out for other boaters, objects and swimmers. • Never jump a wake. If crossing a wake, cross at low speeds and keep a close lookout for skiers and towables. • Comply with all signs and respect barriers. This includes speed limits, no-wake zones and underwater obstructions, etc. • Make every effort to always go boating with apartner. • Make certain your trailer is in proper working order and that your lights work and your boat is secure on the trailer before you travel to your destination. • When trailering your boat, balance your load including items stowed inside your boat. • Don’t mix boating with alcohol or drugs.

RESPECT THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS Respect the rights of others, including anglers, swimmers, skiers, boaters, divers and others so they can enjoy their recreational activities undisturbed. • Show consideration to all recreationists on and around the waters. • Be courteous to other boaters while in boat ramp areas. Launch and retrieve your boat as quickly as possible. • Keep the noise down, especially around shore. • If crossing private property, be sure to ask permission from the landowner(s). Attention Boaters: New regulation in effect for Parks boat launches requires boaters to take the following actions before launching their boat or leaving the site: • Clean all visible plant and animal material such as weeds and zebra mussels from their boat, trailer, and associated equipment • Drain the boat’s bilge, live well, bait well, and other water holding compartments This regulation applies to all types of motorized and non-

motorized watercraft, including jetskis, stand-up paddleboards, canoes and kayaks. NY water bodies are home to an incredible array of diverse native plants, animals and ecosystems. To ensure their longevity for future generations, we need your help to protect them from aquatic invasive species. A Watercraft Transport Permit for Aquatic Invasive Species is required to transport a watercraft that has not been drained or cleaned of visible attached plant or animal material from a Parks boat launch site to a location on land. This is a selfcertified permit that must be filled out by the boater, signed and dated and kept in the possession of the individual transporting the boat.

Protecting Wildlife and Fishing Privileges

When fishing, anglers need to be conscious of their effects on the environment, and make sure they practice their sport in a manner that has a minimal impact on all the state's natural resources. Discarded monofilament line, along with old fishing lures and gear can potentially harm wildlife. For some species, the results can be fatal. It's up to all anglers to be responsible and protect the state's wildlife and environment. Monofilament Line: Carelessly discarded monofilament line can seriously harm wildlife. Animals can become entangled in, or ingest the line, whereby starvation, strangulation or deep wounding are possible. So, be sure to remove any discarded line as well as any other monofilament line that you may encounter while fishing. Litter: An unspoiled setting greatly adds to most people's enjoyment of their total angling experience. Too often litter identifies popular fishing spots and often some of this litter such as bait containers, lure packaging and discarded monofilament line is undeniably associated with the presence of anglers. When you leave garbage behind, you not only affect wildlife-- you also leave the impression that anglers are thoughtless and don't care about the environment. Affected landowners may close the area to fishing. So, be responsible and be try to leave the area you visit even cleaner than when you arrived. Retrieve All Lures and Gear Including those that got snagged in tree branches or on submerged vegetation or logs where possible. Animals may mistakenly ingest, or become entangled in, or get accidentally hooked by fishing equipment carelessly left by anglers.

2021 Mayor’s Cup Regatta & Festival is scheduled for Saturday, July 10, 2021 The Sunrise Rotary Mayor's Cup Regatta & Festival is Plattsburgh's most time-honored and highly anticipated summer tradition on Lake Champlain. Unfortunately, as a result of COVID-19 and the social distancing protocols in place at the time, the Sunrise Rotary was forced to cancel the Mayor’s Cup Festival in 2020. Fortunately, less stringent protocols were in place for water-based events allowing boats to compete in the 43rd annual Sunrise Rotary Mayor’s Cup Regatta, on Saturday, July 11, 2020. On a brighter note, Sunrise Rotary is planning to host the Mayor’s Cup Regatta & Festival on Saturday, July 10, 2021. The Club will host the one-day Mayor’s Cup Festival at a new and exciting venue and is in the process of designing a festive logo and t-shirt. Known as “the” sailing tradition of Lake Champlain, the Mayor’s Cup Regatta is the signature event of the popular summer festival in Plattsburgh, NY. Attracting sailboats from throughout the northeast and Quebec, racers face a “no guts, no glory” competition known, since 1978, for its spirited fun and, sometimes, high-seas adventure. Mayor's Cup T-Shirts The Mayor's Cup T-Shirts are a long tradition of the event. Each year's design is unique and an essential piece of the weekend's wardrobe. T-Shirts sales help Sunrise Rotary fund various community services throughout the year. Unfortunately because of COVID-19 there were no land-based Mayor's Cup activities held in last year and therefore no shirts were for sale in 2020. Not surprising, there is already lots of excitement brewing about this year's t-shirt! The Festival - Kids and Family Activities Sunrise Rotary is working on an exciting Mayor's Cup Festival calendar of events for the whole family to enjoy on Saturday, July 10, 2021 and we look forward to sharing details with you in the coming weeks ahead!
