What is Creative Thinking?
A way of looking at problems or situations from a fresh perspective that suggests unorthodox solutions.
Creative thinking can be stimulated both by an unstructured process such as brainstorming, and by a structured process such as lateral thinking.
Lateral Thinking the solving of problems by an indirect and creative approach, typically through viewing the problem in a new and unusual light. - Edward de BONO
Why Do We Need It?
In this very competitive society we live in, the need for creative thinking is now more in demand more than ever.
Both the corporate and organizational landscape require creativity from their staff and employees, may it be to come up with superbly packaged products, enticing marketing campaigns, and innovation breakthroughs.
Who can learn It?
“Creative thinking is not a talent, it is a skill that can be learnt. It empowers people by adding strength to their natural abilities which improves teamwork, productivity and profits.
- Edward de BONO
Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up. - Pablo Picasso
Creative thinking is not for the artistic people alone. People who work in other fields need to fire up their creative thinking to get out of the rut called “creative block.
Creative Block: A common problem among creative thinkers.
But What does Creativity Mean? Creativity is innovation ● Creativity is thinking outside the box ● Creativity is improvisation ● Creativity is professional growth ● Creativity is being a risk taker or mold breaker ● Creativity is passion ●

Creative Design Thinking
Creativity exercise for designers
A creative person must possess these 3 human abilities: 1. ability to make connections 2. ability to look at things differently- observation- look at things differently
3. ability to generating ideas under certain specified requirements
1. How to start making connections between various things? Exercise 1:
1. How to start making connections between various things? Exercise 2: To accomplish this exercise the most important thing is to switch off your “good sense” and give all the freedom to your imagination. Are you ready? Let’s start!
1. How to start making connections between various things? Exercise 2: 1. Pick up any random item, just write anything which comes to your mind first: e.g. a bottle, a leaf, a flower‌
Exercise 2:
For me it was…
Exercise 2: 2) Analyze this item at least for 10 minutes, try to see new features that you didn’t notice in the beginning. Try to think about this object from different perspectives: shape, texture, material‌
Exercise 2: 3) Draw this item in the middle of your mind map. Put arrows around it and start to write all things that surround you, e.g. table, chairs, cup of coffee, etc.
Exercise 2:
For me it was…
Exercise 2: 4) Now it’s the time to make connections. Start thinking how you can connect your central object with other things. Maybe it is the shape of this item you can use? Don’t be too literal: you can just use certain features or elements of your object. Record all ideas on your mind map. 5) Draw your creations…
Exercise 2:
Do you want to see my results?
2. ability to look at things
differently- observation Exercise 1: 1. look at the image on next slide.
3. ability to generating ideas under certain specified requirements
How to develop creative ideas within established theme? Find it out by completing the following exercise:
Step 1- Task Assignment 1. Decide the theme and item to design under a concept. 2. Imagine yourself in the role of a client, putting objective for a designer. 3. Some assignment examples: a. Chandelier in the nautical style b. Bed with organic shapes c. Table lamp for the space in Indian style
Step 2- Brainstorming Now on this step you need to write all possible associations with the defined theme. The best way to generate ideas is to use mind map: put the topic in the centre and surround it with arrows for writing all associations that come to your mind. Have a look at mine:
Mindmap
Step 3- Creating Mood Board Your mind map will help you in your search. Among your finds select the ones which attract you most:
Mood Board
Step 4- Designing From you mood board start to pull out the shapes, textures, forms, colours. Think on how you can use them in your design. Remember:
