SCF 2021 Annual Report
A Word of Thanks from the President
Dr. Carol F. Probstfeld State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota is boldly leading on its campuses, in its community, and in the higher education industry. Guided by our values and strategic priorities, we are committed to always doing what we say, delivering on our promises, and providing a strong return on investment to our students, donors and taxpayers. This annual report provides the facts, figures and stories that describe SCF’s students, programs and accomplishments in the past year. Our achievements reflect a tremendous commitment to supporting student success and being the region’s first choice for higher education and investment. As we embark on our new 2021-2026 Strategic Plan, we stand ready to lead our rapidly growing region. Our donors, higher education partners and the State of Florida have recognized our diligence for supporting our students. This support is essential to our ability to provide the highest quality education. It is difficult to reflect on the accomplishments of 2020-2021 without fully acknowledging the challenges faced this year. The College entered the Fall 2020 semester by welcoming students back on campus while adjusting and refining the online methods used to teach students who
could not return to campus or who found digital learning to be their preference. For the first time, SCF offered Go Live with SCF Online, a synchronous learning environment for students to take live classes through video conferencing. The State of Florida, CareerSource Suncoast and Florida Power & Light joined forces to offer students an incredible opportunity for rapid credentialing. Students pursuing select workforce certificates were awarded not only scholarships to fund their studies, but career support from CareerSource Suncoast and a free laptop from FPL. The College’s impact on the health care workforce expanded with the launch of an Associate in Science in health services management degree. This two-year program will train support staff for careers in non-clinical health care roles. The degree also articulates smoothly into SCF’s fouryear degree in health services administration. Several major capital projects were completed this spring. The long-awaited opening of our new Studio for the Performing Arts marks a new era for our fine and performing arts programs. Our music and theater students have gained much-needed practice space, storage space for instruments and a new recital hall. This was made possible by the largest fundraising
campaign in SCF Foundation history. In 2019, SCF received a $3.6 million Florida Job Growth Grant. That funding helped to launch the 26 West Center, a facility built with a focus on advanced technology and entrepreneurial innovation. In what was once an aging library at SCF Bradenton, there is now a Coding Academy with robots and drones humming about and a Business Growth Lab supporting incubation and acceleration for small businesses. The 26 West Center enhances SCF’s role as an economic engine for the region. SCF also increased its capacity for offering STEM education with a sizeable expansion of its science complex in Bradenton. The renovation of one of the original science buildings and a glistening new expansion have increased lab space while creating important new areas for students to collaborate with one another. SCF’s students, faculty, staff and administration are always resilient, and just as important, flexible when faced with challenges. With our new strategic plan underway, we will continue to boldly lead as we grow and respond to our region’s workforce needs and our changing world.

Signature Programs SCF offers an array of Signature Programs in its mission to boldly engage students and the community, and to be the region's first choice for innovative, responsive and quality education. These programs are designed to meet the changing educational needs of our students and local employers to enrich the community where we live, play and work. Dual Enrollment SCF’s Early College Program, also known as dual enrollment, early admission or accelerated dual enrollment, enables qualified students to enroll in select college credit courses at any of SCF’s campuses, including online. The credits earned count toward both a college degree and a high school diploma. SCF does not charge dual enrollment and early admission students tuition or fees. Nursing Program The health and science programs at SCF are ranked among the top in the state based on student performance and affordability. Nursing is offered on all three campuses as well as online, and combines coursework on campus with guided clinical experiences in health care agencies in both Manatee and Sarasota counties. Students in the health sciences, including dental hygiene, nursing, physical therapist assistant and occupational therapy assistant, are well known in the community for their volunteerism. TRIO Student Support Services SCF was awarded a highly competitive federal TRIO Student Support Services grant by the U.S. Department of Education. Through TRIO, SCF will further its student service initiatives designed to identify and provide year-round academic and financial coaching and/or other integral services for first-generation college students, those from underserved economic backgrounds or students with disabilities. Go Live With SCF Online In direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic, SCF offered synchronous online courses for the first time. Go Live presented students the option to have online classes with set meeting times and virtual office hours to maximize faculty-student interaction in virtual settings. Rapid Credentialing As part of the State of Florida's "Get There" campaign, SCF secured grant funding to aggressively promote workforce certificates. Program participants received a tuition scholarship, complimentary laptop and career development support from CareerSource Suncoast.

The theatre program at SCF presents under the name of Studio 84 Productions. In 2021, SCF completed construction of a new Studio for the Performing Arts to enhance its performing arts facilities. Athletics SCF has six intercollegiate athletic teams: men's baseball and basketball, and women's beach volleyball, softball, tennis and volleyball. SCF 2021 Annual Report
Science and Manufacturing SCF expanded its STEM capabilities by completing an extensive renovation and expansion of its SCF Bradenton science complex. The new science building of 11,900 square feet includes a faculty office suite and a 55-seat lecture hall on the first floor; two labs, a lab prep room and a classroom on the second floor. The renovation of building 25 included new finishes, furniture, lighting, audiovisual and HVAC upgrades, full restroom remodels, front entrance and breezeway enhancements, and landscaping. The work SCF’s students accomplish in the field of science far exceeds what many would expect of a two-year program. Biotechnology students under the direction of Dr. Matthew Thomas and Dr. Eric Warrick, discovered a novel strand of DNA in an antibiotic producing bacteria. The discovery, along with the names of the seven participating students, has been published in the repository DNA database of the National Institutes of Health. Graduates in STEM programs leave SCF with the knowledge and skills to enter the workplace. SCF alumni can be found conducting research in laboratories or managing manufacturing operations at production facilities. The College is continually adapting to keep this important curriculum on the cutting edge of local economic needs.
SCF Lakewood Ranch Medical Technology & Simulation Center The Medical Technology & Simulation Center (MTSC) is a two-story, 42,000-square-foot building that houses nursing, other health professions, education and SCF’s Energy Technology Management Program. The MTSC also houses the nursing skills lab, nursing assessment lab and intensive care unit lab with state-of-the-art technology including patient simulators, electronic medical records, drug recognition system and medication-dispensing devices. The MTSC hosts collaborative training exercises conducted by SCF Bachelor of Science in Nursing students and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) students and is designated as one of four regional training centers for the Florida Healthcare Simulation Alliance. Lifelong Learning and Workforce Development SCF’s Lifelong Learning and Workforce Development programs serve business, industry, government and individuals. The College offers onsite contract training for business and industry, online courses and a certified testing center. Software training, business process improvement, leadership/management training and grant writing are among the offerings. Professional and personal development is available to individuals interested in a variety of areas, from learning computer skills, to training to be a private investigator or a wedding planner, to advancing driving skills through the Traffic Safety Institute.
SCF Venice Gator Engineering at State College of Florida Gator Engineering at State College of Florida is a collaboration between SCF and the University of Florida Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. The program allows students to begin their coursework at SCF, then matriculate to the UF campus in Gainesville to continue their engineering studies in their chosen major. Programs include computer science, digital arts and sciences, computer engineering and electrical engineering. Honors Program This interdisciplinary program is designed to challenge students and develop critical thinking. A Capstone service-learning project, which is part of the program, helps develop an understanding of civic engagement. The program includes a series of seminars featuring guest speakers.

Sandlin thrived at SCF after initially being hesitant to attend college when he finished high school. After a brief stint selling cars, Sandlin has a college degree and jumpstarted his career in government and politics with internships at the U.S. Department of State and in the House of Representatives. A big part of the SCF experience for Sandlin was getting involved in clubs, including theater and Student Government Association. He received the Outstanding Graduate Award for Spring 2020, receiving the award unconventionally during a virtual ceremony. “Every teacher I met encouraged students to get involved in clubs,” he said. “That way you met more people. That kind of involvement is super important for students.” Sandlin is pursuing a four-year degree in political science at the University of Florida. He isn’t sure where his career will take him, but he is certain his passion for meeting new people and making connections will benefit him.

“The price was right, the timing was right. SCF made perfect sense when I started college.”
Korszen is the president of the board of directors for the SCF Foundation. Now a practicing partner at The Farr Law Firm, Korszen started her education at Manatee Junior College (now SCF) and earned her Associate in Arts in 1978. Korszen faced a lot of uncertainty after graduating from Venice High School as to how she would go to college. Just like many other students over the last 64 years, Korszen took advantage of having an affordable, local option. After earning the A.A. degree, Korszen earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering at the University of Florida and proceeded to graduate magna cum laude from law school at the University of Miami. She never forgot what a difference SCF made. Korszen is excited to continue working to strengthen the SCF Foundation to increase the number of students who can receive scholarships each year and continue to build facilities and create new opportunities.
Dorothy Korszen A.A. Transfer Student
“If we need a new building, a new program, more scholarships, and to keep SCF as a vibrant part of out community, we’ve got to do the work,” said Korszen.
“I was just so grateful to have SCF close by and to have that opportunity to start my college education right away.” Miguel Garcia is a two-time graduate of SCF, earning an associate degree in 2011 and completing his bachelor’s in 2018. He has risen in the ranks of the Sarasota Fire Department to achieve the rank of battalion chief. Garcia has a passion for finding opportunities to pass on his knowledge and expertise in his profession. He serves as an adjunct instructor at Suncoast Technical College, teaching EMT and paramedic programs. He has also helped convince younger firefighters of the importance of education for their careers. It’s essential for many leadership positions in the public safety field. For Garcia, education is about timing. He earned his degrees at a pace that fit his career and family life. He believes his path to education is one that is becoming more common, with students gathering life experience before committing to a specific degree track.
Miguel Garcia B.A.S. Public Safety Administration
“For most people this is a very good choice,” said Garcia. “Why go away if you’re not ready, or pay more when you have quality and affordable college here? Stay local.”
