ABOUT THE SCIENCE FAIR LOGO The original Falmouth Academy Science Fair logo was a linoleum cut designed by Ira Carmel ’89 on the occasion of FA’s inaugural science fair, held on March 17, 1989. The logo was refreshed in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Fair, but retains its original whimsical representation of the depth and breadth of the research that is conducted by our students. Whether exploring the basic elements of life or building better rockets, our students’ curiosity about the world around them is reflected in this logo and in all the work presented here tonight. Photos courtesy of Barbara Campbell, Leah Fasten P’22 & ’25, Amy Galvam, Susan Moffat, and the FA Archives.

WELCOME

P

erhaps you’ve heard the term “hard science?” It usually refers to a scientific field of study that involves quantitative investigations of the physical or natural word. Think physics, chemistry, biology and the like. So-called soft sciences, by contrast, tend to be qualitative in approach and focus on human behavior. Think sociology or psychology. In this context, the term soft sometimes has a negative connotation, as though soft sciences lack comparable levels of rigor, precision, or even value. Such terms suggest an irony that underpins Falmouth Academy’s Science and Engineering Fair: Any scientific discipline, when practiced correctly, is hard. There can be no doubt among the students that the work of preparing for science fair, with its long hours, many obstacles, myriad interim deadlines, and failed experiments, is hard work. And the impressive display you observe here today is a veritable cornucopia of hard science. But I contend that the value of preparing for science fair is rooted not in the relative hardness Matthew Green Head of School of its science, but in its unique ability to develop in its participants, soft skills: creative and critical thinking, professional networking, time and project management, adaptability, spoken and written communication, story-telling, problem-solving, flexibility, and curiosity. In an era of rapid technological change, these also happen to be the skills that employers tell us are in greatest demand and shortest supply. And, they are the skills that distinguish Falmouth Academy graduates, whether they choose careers in hard science, soft science, or no science at all. For our students, today is the culmination of all their hard work—their Super Bowl. We are delighted that so many friends, faculty, family members, and most notably, practicing scientists are here to cheer them on. It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2020 Falmouth Academy Science and Engineering Fair.

Matthew Green Head of School

I

n the era of instant social media and 24-hour news cycles, every one of us, whether a scientist or an artist, needs to assess scientific fact versus propaganda to navigate decisions in a world full of lightning-fast technological advances. How do we as parents and educators approach this challenge? How do we nurture our children’s desire for knowledge, their ability to think objectively, and their confidence to look critically at a deluge of information? The answer starts with focused, scientific work. Every day our students bring questions to class about the information they have read or heard, from friends and family or on the news and social media. At that point, we embark upon a journey of research and verification. Whatever the outcome, students at Falmouth Academy are encouraged to “trust, but verify” sources of information. All this questioning leads students toward the topic they choose for their independent research for the Science and Engineering Fair. With that choice, their topic truly becomes their issue to explore and investigate.

Jill Reves Science and Engineering Fair Coordinator

No matter the results, they learn how to report their scientific investigations with detail, interest, and most of all, integrity. Our students are the leaders of tomorrow, and I could not be more proud of them or more hopeful for our planet. Thank you for your care, time, and support throughout this amazing journey of discovery.

Jill Reves Teacher, Science Department Chair, and Science and Engineering Fair Coordinator
