Sports in Malta The most popular sports in Malta is football even though on an international level we do not perform very well. From a very young age, most young boys want to play football. They watch it with their parents on television and often support the Italian or English clubs. Lately football is becoming quite popular with girls too. At our school we have some very good female players.

. Football has become very popular with girls too

Other popular sports are basketball and waterpolo. We have clubs for rugby, athletics, swimming, hockey, tennis, volleyball, martial arts, netball, gymnastics, badminton and handball too. However water polo teams are the most successful on an international level. At school we learn the basics of most of these sports and then go on to specialise in one of them by becoming members in clubs and practising after school hours and during the weekends. Malta and the Olympic games Malta competed in 16 Summer Olympic Games and 2 Winter Olympic Games. We never won an Olympic medal but shooter William Chetcuti (who has won World Championship events) missed the Double Trap Shooting final in 2004, 2008 and 2012 by a relatively slim margin.
