MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR & GROUP CEO

HUMAID MATAR AL DHAHERI

I am pleased to share with you the ADNEC Group Annual Report for 2022, which showcases the outstanding results and milestones that we achieved over the past year. The report demonstrates ADNEC Group’s pivotal role in supporting economic diversification and reaffirming its position as a key player in shaping the future of the tourism sector around the world.

ADNEC Group’s annual report outlines our accomplishments, mission, and key activities in 2022.

In line with the Group’s efforts to establish Abu Dhabi’s position as the region’s pioneering tourism hub and realise the country’s vision of developing a diversified, knowledgebased economy, ADNEC Group adopted a new corporate identity. The new identity centres on diversifying the Group’s operations by focusing on a number of promising sectors, including: Venues, Events, Hotels, Food & Beverage along with Services and Tourism.

With its business units that cover a range of sectors, the Group brought AED 3.56 billion direct and indirect income to the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in 2022, recording a 48% increase compared to 2021. In doing so, the Group has contributed a total of more than AED 43.26 billion direct and indirect economic income to the Emirate since its establishment in 2005. The Group provided more than 21,000 job opportunities in various support sectors, an increase of 31% from 2021, which also served as a key driver for the Emirate’s economic growth.

I am proud to share with you that the number of exhibitions, conferences, and specialised events that we hosted in 2022 increased by 37% compared to 2021, which has led to a significant increase in the total number of visitors, for the events hosted by the Group at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, which increased by 155% compared to 2021. In doing so, the Group contributed to raising hotel bookings in Abu Dhabi by more than 438,000 new hotel rooms.

At ADNEC Group, we are committed to measuring visitor and exhibitor satisfaction, which is critical for the success of our events. As such, I am pleased to share that our customer happiness index has risen to reach 96.1%, one of the highest globally in the sector.

Aside from this, we have witnessed the expansion of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre to more than 153,000 square metres, making it the largest in the region. As part of our expansion, we also launched the Marina Hall, the largest of its kind in the Middle East, covering an area of more than 10,000 square metres.

Our achievements have extended far beyond the UAE, where we witnessed the start of the third stage expansion work at ExCeL London centre, in which 25,000 square metres of exhibition areas were added. In 2022, ExCeL London also hosted 250 events, 15 of them being held for the first time.

Furthermore, the ADNEC Group’s business units delivered outstanding results in 2022, boosting the Group’s contribution to the local economy. Tourism 365, the Group’s tourism subsidiary which was launched in 2021, opened new offices in Germany and Jordan to expand its reach, while also working with more than 100 major global travel companies to promote tourism in Abu Dhabi, and enhance the emirate’s regional and global positioning in the wider tourism sector. ADNEC Services expanded its work, where it held a range of additional activities in the UAE and Arabian Gulf area. In addition, Capital Catering, the Group’s food services and hospitality subsidiary, provided more than 14 million meals to clients.

With all of these achievements, we have added nine prestigious accolades to our impressive record of accomplishments, bringing our total number of awards to 119.

The exceptional results driven by ADNEC Group’s efforts are a testament to our success in attracting tourists and visitors. ADNEC Group aims to support the sustainable growth of the tourism sector in the emirate, by focusing on providing world-class services to meet the expectations of our clients across the globe.

HIGHLIGHTS

1 Long Term Lease

Al Ain Convention Centre provides the city of Al Ain with an exceptional venue for exhibitions, conferences, weddings and other special events.

From the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Al Ain Convention Centre (AACC) focused on providing support to government and the community in relief efforts for the pandemic. These exceptional circumstances required exceptional support till the end.

It was a critical priority for the government and public health services to ensure that services were provided to the community. Our flexible infrastructure helped relieve pressure on medical facilities in the city.

AACC was still able to host multiple corporate events while having SEHA in house, by isolating part of the venue for public access.

These events included the Burjeel Royal Intensive Care Conference- BRICC- which was attended by international Speakers,

Emirates Heritage Club - which supports the community in preserving the UAE’s heritage, government events such as ADNOC Distribution and Al Ain Distribution Companies meetings.

Reactivating these accounts was an opportunity to boost Al Ain Convention Centre’s presence in the market and changed the venue’s reputation from being a centre for COVID-19 assessment back to being the venue of choice in Al Ain.

HIGHLIGHTS

ESG

2022 was a significant year for sustainability, with ExCeL becoming the first UK venue to achieve carbon neutral status via the internationally-recognised PAS 2060 standard. The venue also finalised its first full ESG Strategy, achieved recertification of its ISO 14001 and ISO 20121 status, and continued supporting its key charity partners.

Key events

Despite being closed for the first six weeks of the year, ExCeL staged more than 250 events, 15 new shows and its first immersive experience, Jurassic World: The Exhibition.

Noteworthy events included the all-electric Formula E motorsport championship, which welcomed more than 30,000 fans, and the London International Horse Show – both broadcast live to millions of viewers. Other key events included MCM Comic Con, the Pokémon World Championships, IAAPA, World Travel Market (WTM), Brand Licensing Europe and the International Liver Congress (EASL).

Dock edge development

Planning approval was granted for the redevelopment of the venue’s dock edge. Redevlopment of this 1km waterfront stretch is part of a wider strategy to attract major global brands and immersive experiences. Works will begin in Q1 2023 with the first phase due for completion in Q3 with the opening of a large-scale immersive experience celebrating Disney’s 100th anniversary. This follows the success of Jurassic World: The Exhibition, which sold more than 320,000 tickets –the show’s highest European attendance to date – and is the venue’s longest running in-hall event.

Digital transformation

In 2022, the venue was transformed following the installation of two further stages of digital infrastructure. This investment has improved wayfinding, the visibility of event and brand messaging and has led to additional revenue streams.

EXPANSION PROGRAMME (PHASE 3)

Due for completion in Q4 2024, the venue’s 25,000 square metres expansion project achieved a significant milestone in 2022, with the first phase of the works completed. McLaren Construction were appointed to deliver the construction phase of the project, commencing in January 2023.

TRANSPORT Infrastructure

In May 2022, London’s long-awaited Elizabeth Line opened, to resounding positivity from visitors, exhibitors and organisers alike. The high-speed line has significantly reduced journey times from central London to the venue, allowing a direct route from Heathrow Airport in just 43 minutes. Further improvements were made to the DLR service, with train frequency to ExCeL doubling. These improvements, combined with existing infrastructure, have made ExCeL one of the most connected venues in the world.
