We are very pleased to once again work in partnership with the IV International Jean-Marie Londeix Saxophone Competitions, as we have done for the previous editions. We would like to support the initiative of this competition, which has become one of the most important international competitions and an essential event for the saxophone in South-East Asia. With our support we equally thank Jean-Marie Londeix, who has consecrated his life to the promotion of classical saxophone, and who has always had an unwavering loyalty to Selmer since the beginning of his career. We are celebrating in 2014 the 200th anniversay of Adolphe Sax's birth. We are proud, thanks to the purchase of the Adolphe Sax et Cie company, to have been able to perpetuate the work of this great inventor. Good luck to all the candidates from all over the world for this fourth edition of the competition which promises to be a very exciting event and one that will certainly bring many new talents into the spotlight! Chatchaval Asavasopon (1959 – 2014)

The 2014 Jean-Marie Londeix International Saxophone Competition would like to recognize the unique contribution of our festival’s good friend and long-time benefactor, “Chatchaval”. His endeavors to advance music in Thailand have been recognized by Thai musicians, music educators and students who have benefited from his generosity and artistic foresight. He was responsible for developing trade with Western and Asian companies who manufacture instruments suitable for Western music and he also advanced the idea of sharing cultures by developing close ties abroad. Also, in Thailand he revolutionized the musical instrument manufacturing industry through his use of raw Thai materials such as the little used wood of rubber trees, combined with the ingenious skills of Thai artisans, to manufacture percussion instruments of quality, such as his well-known conga and bongo drums, which are 100% Thai goods. The most revered King Bhumibol Aduyadej recently celebrated Chatchaval’s activities as a patriot

and re-builder of the Thai economy for his contribution to the manufacturing of musical instruments with entirely raw Thai materials and Thai manufacturing skills. Chatchaval has contributed generously and regularly to the Jean-Marie Londeix International Saxophone Competition held in cooperation with the College of Music at Mahidol University. We will miss Chatchaval’s personal, hands-on connection to the competition, but we also look forward to future collaboration with his family and his company, the century-old Yong Seng Musical Instruments Shop. JURJEAN-MARIE LONDEIX, PRESIDENT OF JURY “The iconic 2014 Fourth Edition of the International Jean-Marie Londeix Saxophone Competition marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Adolphe Sax. This conference held in Thailand, where the instrument has long been cherished by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyade, underlines the universality of the instrument and its ongoing and increasing use as a concert instrument, a fact evidenced in the attraction it has for the valiant young players amassed here for this event. It is also very significant that this musical competition with such a high international level is taking place on the campus of the prestigious Mahidol University in Bangkok, where we welcome scores of youthful artists coming from five continents: North and South America, Canada, Australia, Asia and Europe. Some of the specific countries represented from Asia are China, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong...... This underlines an important moment in the history of the saxophone, as well as an important stage in Thailand's developing musical life scene. I want to sincerely thank Dr. Sugree Charoensook, Dean of the College of Music of Mahidol University, for his outstanding involvement and unconditional devotion to this project, without whom this event would not exist. Thanks as well go to his capable and

diligent colleagues and staff, his generous patrons, to the members of the international and distinguished jury, brought here from points around the world, and to the highly skilled musical artisans connected to this unique and exceptional event.” Jury Committee

This year we are celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of the saxophone's inventor, Adolphe Sax. I know we can all be inspired by his genius, musical traditions and especially his creativity. Shyen Lee Professor of Saxophone Artistic Director, JMLISC, WSCXV

Artistic Director: Shyen Lee It has been a great privilege for me to participate as part of the organizing committee of the Jean-Marie Londeix International Saxophone Competition since it's second inauguration, beginning in 2008. Throughout these past years I have been thrilled to meet and work with so many of the world's most renown saxophonists and composers who have come as jurors and workshop presenters in preparation for our events here at Mahidol University College of Music. I have also had the opportunity of meeting and getting to know so many of our young and talented candidates. Everyone involved in every level of the competition has shown great passion for the art of saxophone playing. This spirit, which we share, motivates me and helps me strive to be a better teacher and player. What I see in the competition is a way of recognizing and cherishing the efforts of the competitors and I encourage wholeheartedly each and every candidate. Let me express my admiration for the enormous amount of time and energy you have invested in both the physical and mental preparation of the challenging musical work before you. You are forging the saxophonist's new road into a territory as yet unexplored. Please remember, you are the developers and nurturers of our new traditions!

JURORS Dr. James Ogburn “I am honored to join my colleagues on the Jury for this year’s Jean-Marie Londeix Competition. As a composer, I find the potentials for collaboration with saxophonists to be virtually limitless. The instrument’s construction provides such flexibility, which in turn allows for limitless possibilities of sound paired with a rich and thorough musicianship. Truly it is unique and extremely rewarding for those of us who explore music primarily through graphite, to work with such an incredible utensil. How wonderful that the organizers of this event recognize the importance of including a composers voice, so that we can continue to learn from each other. This Jean-Marie Londeix Competition provides an amazing opportunity to the most promising players of the young generation. By offering the occasion

for some to collaborate with an established national orchestra (Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra), to engage with an important composer of our time (Narong Prangcharoen), and to grapple with some of the most important works of recent decades, this competition provides an excellent opportunity for individual growth, as well as offers the leaders of tomorrow the chance to flourish and distinguish themselves. To all participants, I wish you each a form of triumph: that you may grow from the experience and eventually achieve your own definition of success.” James J. Ogburn (b. 1974) began his career as a jazz and rock guitarist. rather than comparisons to other competitors. Best of luck in this endeavor and all future opportunities!” Jeffrey E. Vickers

JEFFREY E. VICKERS “Dear outstanding musicians (who happen to be saxophonists), Please allow me to offer my best wishes to all of you. Your commitment to your instrument, modern music, and the repertoire of this extremely important gathering are all to be commended. I'm eager to hear you perform selections from this exemplary list of literature. I hope that your selections have made you a better musician, through countless hours of preparation, study, insight, and collaboration with others. It is truly a great honor for me to be a jury member for this competition. Monsieur Londeix, one of the most important saxophonists in history, is the master of the modern saxophone. His teachings are unavoidable for the aspiring saxophonist, and his imprint on our repertoire is without question. Take a moment to consider the history and importance of this literature. You may perform music and techniques which were not possible or even conceived 30 years ago. This is the beauty of our instrument - the constant invention and development of both repertoire and possibilities. It is up to you to continue such evolution. Remember that you are ARTISTS, first and foremost. I hope that you will judge your success based upon your own abilities, backgrounds and previous performances,

more yourself, but also the jury will be happy to hear music and not notes!” Marcus WEISS

MARCUS WEISS “Dear participants, I’m very much looking forward to hearing you all in Bangkok! It’s a great pleasure and honor for me to participate in this jury. Also this whole competition is a wonderful achievement for our instrument, in so many respects! One of the most important competitions, who’s patron is the most important historical figure alive of something we call the classical saxophone“, finds its home in this important and thriving Asian metropole! Sure, the idea of “competition” is somehow contrary to the spirit of music itself! Competitions measure the differences. They first of all listen to the craftsmanship and sometimes to the artistery of the players, like sport events count goals and seconds and meters. But the profound core of music is the unmeasurable, the pure, the free, I mean the Art and not the artistery. This Art doesn’t come by itself, it has to be achieved, even though we already have it and feel it somewhere inside ourselves. Never forget about these two sides of the medal, i.e. the analytic work of practicing hours and hours is important and your notes and rhythms and articulations ... have to be precise and played the right way, but before going to the stage don’t forget, that it’s all about music and that you now need to forget the analysis and bring it all together, synthesize it and “sing your song“. By taking this healthy risk, not only you will be much

His repertoire includes all epochs of his instrument’s short history, from the beginnings in impressionistic France to the present. This is undoubtedly one of the most renowned competitions for our instrument and probably the only one that is deeply committed to the original saxophone repertoire, and at the same time pays special attention to the latest works for saxophone. This competition clearly continues with Jean-Marie Londeix’s extensive artistic and pedagogic legacy; this competition is also essential for the optimal development of our instrument and its exquisite sound.
