IN BRIEF: HEALTHCARE

PATIENT CENTRED DESIGN In a world where there are more people needing healthcare than money available to treat them, we all face the challenge of having to do more with less. We employ LEAN design principles that position the patient at the centre of the design process. By engaging with patients, clinicians, health planners and strategic consultants, we design affordable, high quality and responsive clinical facilities that

improve the patient experience. Designed to international healthcare standards, we create safe, uplifting, flexible and sustainable healthcare facilities where infection control and privacy and dignity are of paramount importance. Our experience of Building Information Modelling (BIM) enables innovation and cost effective delivery. From rural health clinics and specialist cancer care centres to large acute city hospital departments, we design healthcare facilities at all scales. Our laboratory design enables world-class medical research. Taking a bird’s eye view, we also offer master planning and space utilisation studies to help healthcare providers strategically plan and develop their estate.

REDUCING TRAUMA IN ACUTE CARE Going to hospital can be a distressing experience. To reduce anxiety we start by understanding the patient journey – balancing patients’ psychological needs with the practical and technical demands of frontline healthcare delivery. Starting with a welcoming entrance we use logical layouts, clear wayfinding, colour, artwork and lighting to enhance patient well being and aid orientation. To gain the optimum number of beds and maximise throughput, we carefully analyse and design the adjacencies between departments and core clinical areas, such as operating theatres and diagnostic facilities.

Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital ADP is redeveloping the emergency care department at this leading London teaching hospital.

WOMEN’S HEALTH For over 40 years we have been providing comfortable and welcoming spaces for women’s health, from maternity and neo-natal units to breast screening centres. Through close consultation with midwives, patients and staff we balance the need to provide optimal birthing spaces, with safe homely environments that protect mother and baby. Security can be enhanced by controlling access to spaces. Sound proofing between rooms increases privacy. Space, colour and light are utilised to create a relaxing environment, with clear wayfinding and views onto gardens used to enhance emotional wellbeing.

Shanti Memorial Hospital, Raurkela ADP’s development will bring the latest clinical technology to a multi-speciality IVF and maternity care hospital.

MASTERPLANNING Masterplanning is about looking ahead and designing a sustainable development framework that meets the strategic vision of the client and the requirements of the site. Whether planning a new development or rationalising an existing healthcare estate, we start by working closely with public and private stakeholder groups to undertake a thorough analysis of the site. By assessing and developing the requirements for internal and external spaces, we can create valuable healthcare assets that meet current and future requirements. This in turn gives identity and amenity to the spaces within and around the site, creating a positive impact on the local community.

Masterplan, Royal Surrey County Hospital ADP rationalised spaces and developed a masterplan so that the hospital could adapt to current and anticipated clinical trends.

EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH ADP has extensive experience of designing state-of-the art teaching, clinical and scientific research facilities that often house the latest technology and equipment. Creating flexible, formal and informal collaboration spaces and shared access to laboratory resources are important considerations, together with an understanding of the complex environmental and servicing requirements. Not only does this result in more efficient buildings, with far higher levels of utilisation, but also allows for social interaction and cross-fertilisation of ideas between researchers from different disciplines.

Cardiovascular Research Centre, University of Leicester ADP’s design enables world-class cardiovascular research teams to be brought together under one roof at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester.

COMMUNITY HEALTHCARE ADP has completed a number of primary care facilities that respond to local needs, including doctors and dental surgeries, polyclinics and integrated health centres. We also have significant experience of designing community healthcare facilities that bridge the gap between general practice and acute hospitals. Completed projects include outpatients departments, minor injuries units, specialist private health clinics, diagnostic screening centres, dementia care, and mental health units.

Glastonbury Health and Wellbeing Centre ADP’s design includes four doctors surgeries, a pharmacy, an optician’s clinic and flexible space for community use.

CANCER CARE ADP has significant experience in creating therapeutic environments for cancer and palliative care. Taking a holistic approach we design facilities that respond positively to all of the senses. By carefully considering lighting, colour, aroma, views, art, proportion, sound, texture and materials, we create reassuring and uplifting spaces for patients, their families and staff.

Charles Renton Unit, Macmillan/Hereford Hospital Over the last 20 years ADP has designed over 125 cancer care centres for Macmillan Cancer Support in the UK.
