Target group: Men and women 1. Coordination method: 1.A- Beginning of activities:  Ask the participants to sit in a circle and greet them.  Record attendance by loudly calling the participants by their names.  Recall previous topics or action plans.  The facilitator asks about problems or raises brainstorming questions to be linked with new topics.  Create an enabling environment for the participants to sing the song 1. I am happier (the same melody as for the song Cotton Flower).

1.B- How to draw small boxes around the picture of a lactating mother  The facilitator is ready to draw small boxes around the picture of a lactating mother  Ask the participants to discuss the below questions by drawing pictures or writing words in each box 1. What meal do you feed a baby aged below 6 months? 2. Why should a mother breastfeed her baby during the first six months of age?

 After that, the facilitator thanks the participants and turns to the brainstorm discussion.

2 : Brainstorm discussion

 Begin the discussion about feeding a baby with only breast milk during the first six months of age and include several experience-related questions:  Do most people in the community feed their babies with only breast milk until the age of six months?

Let the participants answer the question

 Why should a mother feed her baby with only breast milk? Answer  Breast milk is an easily-digested meal.  Breast milk is the most nutritious meal for babies.

It helps to protect babies from diarrhea, ear diseases, respiratory diseases and other health problems. No other liquids can prevent diseases like breast milk can.  A baby fed with breast milk is normally healthier, strong and intelligent - the baby grows well and feels comfortable.  Breast milk helps a baby to stay healthy and intelligent.  What is a good method for breastfeeding a baby? Answer  A baby should be fed at one breast until it runs empty before changing to the other side so that the baby obtains sufficient nutrients and fats from breast milk. If the baby is fed with water or other liquid meals, he/she will suck less breast milk and develop slower.  No matter how hot the weather is, breast milk remains a good and sufficient nutrient for a baby’s needs.  What meal should a baby aged below 6 months abstain from? Answer o A newly-born baby should not be given food or other liquids (even water). o A baby should not be fed with bottled milk because it is difficult to maintain hygiene and it may cause diarrhea.

Message  Mother: A baby should be only fed with breast milk for the first six months of age. Even water should not be given so that the baby will grow healthy and strong.

3 : Brainstorm for participants to practice in the group or individually at home  Feed the baby with only breast milk until the age of 6 months to keep your baby strong and healthy.  The pregnant woman should go to have her baby delivered at the nearest health center or referral hospital.  Breastfeed the baby right after delivery to allow the baby to receive colostrum.  The baby will instantly receive warmth from the mother and will feel comfortable and stimulate the breast to produce milk.  The husband should make sure that the baby is only fed with breast milk as the breast milk contains sufficient nutrients for the baby from the day of delivery until the age of 6 months.  Breast milk can protect the baby against diseases.  The husband should make sure to provide his wife with one additional meal per day during her breastfeeding period.

4. Learn to read  write  and calculate  Encourage the participants (parents, child caretaker) to draw tables or pictures in their

notebook.  Encourage to choose keywords and learn to write and read them loudly altogether. Colostrum, right after delivery, feed the baby with colostrum to prevent disease

 Write these words on flipcharts on which the tables are drawn and break down the keywords (no need to write them on new flipcharts).  Break down the keywords that have been learnt to write and read and then put them together to form sentences, for instance:  ទក ឹ ដ 

Practice the numbers: Mr. Meas Chamroeun is married with Ms. Thavy. They have a baby named Meas Thavina. So far, the baby is 5 months old. If we want to count the age in days, how many days is the baby old? 1 month = 30 days in average, so how many days are there in 5 months? Method 30 x 5 = 150 days or 30+30+30+30+30=150 days.

5. Set the topic and remind of the time for the next meeting according to the timetable  Topic.............................

6. Additional information and materials for the facilitator Purpose: We will have clear understanding of the importance of exclusively feeding a baby with breast milk until the age of 6 months. Materials: Picture of colostrum breastfeeding, flip chart, tape, marker
