- Rumduol’s husband is a construction worker. Every evening, her husband has a drink with
friends. Rumduol has an 8-month-old daughter and has not been healthy and looked pale since her pregnancy. She did not go to the health center for a pregnancy checkup. Rumduol’s husband: Hi friend! Now it is nearly dark. Go home and enjoy one liter of wine! Friend: Yeah it is good because I am having a waist pain (They sit and drink happily) Rumduol: Today my cake did not sell well! Where are the villagers? Oh I must go to breastfeed my child who has been left to my mother for an afternoon! Rumduol: Mom, how is my daughter? Did she cry much? Rumduol’s mother: Yeah your daughter cried but now she has stopped and is sleeping in the hammock. Rumduol: How could you console her to stop crying, mum? Rumduol’s mother: I fed her with porridge and sugar water, so she stopped crying and fell asleep! Has your husband come home yet? Rumduol: I don’t know, but he is always coming home late and getting drunk. Now I take my daughter back home. Sam: Hi Bong Rumduol what do you have for dinner? I don’t know what I should cook! The child of Rumduol’s starts crying! Oh Bong Rumduol your child cries. She looks thin and has a fever! Rumduol: My daughter gets a fever and diarrhea very frequently. I don’t know what is happening! Sam: Your child is thin and you also look pale. Have you and your child gone to the health center? Rumduol: Never. Her husband is coming: Hi Ms. teacher Village chief: Oh Ms. teacher is here! Did you tell Rumduol to take her child to have her weighed and receive anti-worm drugs and attend the Kitchen Program? Sam: Not yet! Oh Bong Rumduol as you have just heard from the village chief, you mustលtake to have her weighed and her health checked because it is អ្នកសម្របសម្រួ បង្វែរចូyour លគំនchild ិតពភា ិ កា very important for you and your child. Rumduol: Yes I am taking my child to have her weighed and consult with the doctor! Thank you!
Facilitator gets the participants into a discussion.
2 : Brainstorm discussion
Open a discussion about Rumduol’s family and the child after watching the play. Brainstorming question: What type of person is Rumduol’s husband? How can we deal with the problem if we were Rumduol? What are the adverse impacts of feeding a child with liquid sugar porridge? Did Rumduol provide her child with sufficient complementary food? Why? Would her child be healthy if she provided sufficient complementary food? What can we do to help her and her child to avoid pale skin and diarrhea? Answer Commend her and her husband to attend the discussion group to obtain new awareness Encourage her husband to take his child and wife to the health center to obtain advice from a doctor Encourage her to cook multi-nutrition food for her child and herself The husband must encourage his wife to eat additional food, so that she will have sufficient breast milk for the baby What problem will a child face if we don’t provide him/her with sufficient food? Answer The baby doesn’t gain weight (he/she loses weight) He/she is thin, pale He/she is not as active as other children He/she gets ill frequently He/she will not do well in his/her study when attending school His/her parents loose time and money in taking care of the child He/she may die if there is no timely resolution What multi-nutritious food should be additionally given to a child? Answer A varied diet comprised of vegetables, fruits, meat and fish Orange/red fruits (carrot, sweet potato, pumpkin, ripe mango, ripe papaya and avocado) Green vegetables (cabbage, ivy gourd, moringa leaves, pumpkin shoots, star gooseberry) Fish, meat, liver, eggs (nuts, including cashew, and all kinds of beans) etc. Grind all ingredients so that the meal is easy to chew, swallow, and digest for the child Add butter or oil in the food for children at all times Cow milk may be added into the food and can be used instead of water when cooking porridge. Continue breastfeeding the child until he/she is 24 months old or over, whenever he/she is hungry. 3 : Brainstorm for participants to practice in the group or individually at home Develop a plan with the participants and share it with members inside/outside the group about the importance of providing a varied diet for a child aged 6 months or over For a child aged from 6 months to 1 year, breastfeeding should be conducted before providing other meals Cook nutritious foods for a child aged 6 months or over
Provide additional nutritious meals two or three times/day to help the child to grow well and be strong The child must be breastfed until the age of 24 months or over The participants must provide feedback when meeting the next time to share their experience and practice
Message: To help children to grow well and become strong, 2 or 3 kinds of nutritious ingredients must be added in the food for children (butter, oil, peanuts, eggs, beans, vegetables and fruits) at all times!
4. Learn to read write and calculate
Encourage the participants (parents, child caretakers) to draw tables or pictures in their notebook Encourage them to choose keywords and learn to write and read them loudly all together បបរ
ម្ាយទន់
ធញ្ញ ាតិ
ចម្ររុះ ច+ំំ+រ+ំំុះ
ចម្ររុះ
ចម្ររុះ
រវមំ ឹ
Write these words on the flipcharts on which the tables are drawn and break down the keywords (no need to write them on new flipcharts) Break down the keywords that the participants have learned to write and read and then put
them together to form sentences, for instance:
សណ្តែកដ ី ..សី....ដក......ណ្ដក......(សីដកណ្ដក)
Number calculation practice: Rumduol and her husband buy some food from market for the family. She spends 3,000 riels for fish, 4,500 riels for cooking oil, and 2,500 riels for peanuts. Question: How much did she spend on food? Method 3000 + 4500 + 2500 = 10000 riels 5.
