How to Care for Babies Having Diarrhea

Message Parents: If your baby has serious diarrhea, take him/her to the nearest health center or hospital to receive a zinc supplement. Zinc helps your baby to quickly recover from the illness.

Target group: Women and child caretaker 1. Coordination method: 1.A-Beginning of activities:  Ask the participants to sit in a circle and greet them  Record attendance by loudly calling the participants by their names  Recall previous topics or action plans  Ask about problems or raise brainstorming questions to be linked with new topics  To create a pleasant atmosphere, the facilitator asks the participants to sing the following songs all together: 1. I’m happier (the same melody as for the song Cotton Flower) 2. Feeding a variety of food 1.B How to draw two jars with flowers  Be ready to draw two jars and a flower in each jar. The first jar has a leak with water flowing out, contains a wilted flower and next to it is the picture of a child having diarrhea and sitting defecating.

 The second jar contains a fresh flower, is full of water, and the child is healthy.

 Select four volunteers to do a role play of a family with positive and a family with negative attitude, each of them having a child with diarrhea o The first family does not bring their child to the health center and fails to provide sufficient water o The second family takes their child to the health center. They receive advice and medication from the doctor, including:

- After the play, start to brainstorm and dicuss 2 : Brainstorm discussion  First, read the following to the participants  Diarrhea is a disease that can be prevented and cured. However, there are still children dying from diarrhea because very few children receive proper treatment according to the recommended method (Oralit, breastfeeding and hydration) (About 5,700 Cambodian children aged below 5 years die every year) (Health Magazine No. 41, 2009)


 Second, discuss the role played story about negatively and positively behaving families with the following questions: - What does the story tell us? - What do you see in the picture? - In your family, has any child ever had diarrhea? - Have you brought the child with diarrhea to hospital? ( Yes,  No  Why?) - Have you ever heard about or received zinc from a health center? Let the participants answer  Can diarrhea be prevented? Answer  Diarrhea can be prevented and cured  Wash your hands before touching food  Always drink clean water (boiled or filtered water)  Cook the food properly  Cover the food and maintain hygiene  Defecate in a toilet and wash hands after using the toilet  How can we help a child aged 2-24 months when he/she has diarrhea? Answer  Breastfeed the child more frequently  Take the child to hospital to obtain zinc from health workers to help the child quickly recover from its illness  Provide the child with sufficient water to prevent dehydration  Try to feed the child with Oralit frequently (properly dilute it)  Follow the advice of health workers on the provision of zinc for children  Treat the child as advised (10-14 days) Answer  What are the advantages of zinc for a child with diarrhea?  Zinc is very important for the enzymes and hormones in the body  The immune system needs it to function properly  Zinc is also important to recreate the inner layer of the intestines  It reduces the duration of diarrhea, which is important because extended diarrhea will put the child at a high death risk and can cause slow development  What are the advantages of Oralit for a child who is dehydrated due to diarrhea? Answer  It reduces the duration of diarrhea and reduces nausea  It rapidly replenishes the water lost due to diarrhea  New Oralit powder is produced with a small amount of sugar and salt and used across the world

 Take the child to the nearest health center or hospital if his/her situation is not improving  Provide him/her with sufficient water to prevent dehydration  Follow the advice of health workers  Wash your hands before touching food  Always drink clean water (boiled or filtered water)  All food needs to be well-cooked  Cover the food and maintain hygiene  Defecate in a toilet and wash hands after using the toilet

4. Learn to read  write  and calculate

 Number calculation practice: Sophary and her husband took their child with diarrhea to hospital to receive treatment. They spent 12,000 rieles on gasoline for their motorcycle.  Question: How much money do the have left if they had 40,000 riels?


Method  40,000 R – 12,000 = 28,000 riels
