Antech releases new catalogue
The new Antech antenna catalogue is now available in New Zealand
The quality of sound from a car radio depends just as much on the aerial as it does with the receiving unit and speakers. WoF changes by July Changes to New Zealand’s warrant of fitness system, which will see annual inspections for cars registered after 2000, are expected to be in place by July 2013 if not earlier. The key changes to the warrant of fitness system (WoF) include: An initial inspection for new cars, followed by annual inspections once vehicles are three-years-old. Annual inspections for vehicles three years and older and first registered on or after January 1 2000. Six-monthly inspections for vehicles first registered before January 1 2000. The Government says the new inspection frequency regime recognises concerns about older vehicles by making sure vehicles registered before January 1 2000 remain on six-monthly inspections. Ministry of Transport research shows that the package of changes will benefit motorists and businesses by $159-million a year, and by at least $1.8-billion over 30 years. This includes savings in inspection

and compliance costs, justice and enforcement costs, and time spent by motorists getting their WoF. Associate transport minister Simon Bridges says these savings will have a flow-on benefit for the wider economy. “We took these concerns into account in designing a WoF package that backs up the changed inspection frequency over time with other measures, such as information and education campaigns and more funding for police enforcement.” Changes to the WoF system will be made through the Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Standards Compliance 2002, and are expected to be in place by July 2014 or earlier.

Extending the variable frequency range for CoF gives the ability to reward operators with good safety records through longer periods between inspections, while still closely managing operators with poor safety records. Changes to the CoF system will be made through the Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Standards Compliance 2002 and are expected to be in place by July 2014 or earlier.

In an automotive environment like ours, that is too long and too far. Minor repairs will turn into major work, negating any theoretical savings. “Surely the onus must be on improving safety levels, not eroding them. Even recently released research by the Monash University Injury Research Institute which was co-sponsored by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) casts doubt on the likely outcome and cost of the changes being proposed; if the so called experts aren’t sure of what might happen, why are we pushing ahead?. “Government could have streamlined our cumbersome annual licensing process, made individual motorists more accountable for the risks they represent and improved the integrity of the existing inspection process. Instead
they are selling this reform to New Zealanders on the back of the potential that they can save themselves around $50 a year.” According to the MTA carrying out fewer inspections will mean some providers will simply opt out of the business, meaning some motorists will have to travel further and take more time to have an inspection carried out, as well as adding to the jobless total, while pushing more skilled people out of the industry. Missed opportunity
The Motor Industry Association says it was always in support of extending the time period between vehicle inspections. “We saw this issue as being relevant to vehicle owners, and not one about job protection for the corner garage. The current system may have been suited to vehicles built in the 1950s and 1960s, but was no longer appropriate for the modern motor car”, says CEO Perry Kerr. “Our research shows that new vehicles are regularly serviced during their first three-year period and we know the franchise dealer will, while servicing the vehicle, ensure that it is safe to operate on our roads. Hunter gets a fast workout Steve Rushbrooke says that with the new Hunter HawkEye Elite wheel aligner at his new Te Awamutu tyre store, it won’t be long before the 250 alignments per month they were averaging on just one machine are eclipsed. Steve has also hung on to the Hunter DSP600 Digital Imaging Aligner that has served him so well, in order to cope with the growing demand. Unusual business model
Tyreland says it is an unusual business model which is turning the heads of many independent tyre retailers and automotive service centres looking to perform better in the extremely competitive New Zealand tyre market. The Tyreland model is a joint venture. Which brings together a group of like-minded owner/ operator tyre retailers as shareholders in the Tyreland group. “The joint venture model is a refreshingly different style that our people find more attractive than the franchise model with its pyramidshaped chain of command and money flow,” says Tyreland spokesperson Ian Fraser “Each Tyreland member retains the independent ownership of the dealership, and control of operation and profits. Lucas batteries from Appco Appco offers automotive trade customers a full three tier range of Lucas automotive batteries. These include the Ultra High (UHP) Performance' High Performance (HP), and Extra Heavy Duty (EHD) batteries. The three tiers represent different levels of battery performance as well as different features and benefits. Lucas UHP batteries feature the sealed maintenance-free (SMF) technology, including a recombinant lid system which collects any gas released during the charging process, converts it back into a liquid, and recombines it with the acid. This completely eliminates the need for water top-up, while also protecting installers from any possible acid splash. The lid design also incorporates a safety spark arrestor plug. This is a one way valve system that allows excessive gases to escape the battery, but prevents external ignition sources from entering the battery itself. Workshops need to be aware that there are significant differences in battery case technology that are all being distributed under the SMF banner. The first generation of these batteries actually utilises a generic lid design with standard screwin top caps that are typically covered by the top label. This system is designed as a shortcut in the manufacturing process, enabling a single lid type
to be used for all battery variations. This type of lid design does not efficiently recombine the gases within the battery back into electrolyte. As a result premature failure is a potential danger due to liquid loss. This type of battery is also still exposed to external ignition sources. Severe loss to property is a potential consequence from a battery exploding due to the internal gases being ignited. Another feature of the SMF case design is the ergonomic carry handle, which when folded away presents a fully flat battery top. For over-the-top style clamping systems this means there is never any danger of handles and vent caps preventing the easy and safe installation of the battery. The built in state of charge and electrolyte indicator enables both the technician and the consumer to determine the battery's state of charge. The Lucas High Performance range has slightly lower CCA ratings than it's Ultra High Performance equivalent. The product features an open top lid system with screw in vent caps rather than the recombining lid technology requiring the need for water top-up occasionally if water levels drop below the top of the plates. When testing the product the use of a hydrometer is required in order to accurately measure the levels of sulphuric acid within the battery as the High Performance
lid does not feature a magic eye indicator. The Lucas Extra Heavy Duty range of batteries has slightly lower CCA ratings than their High Performance equivalent and also features an open top lid design.

Getting the best Scan Tools have become increasingly important to all types of workshops as a necessary means of automotive diagnosis. In this advertising feature Motor Equipment News has endeavoured to collate a selection of the latest equipment to help workshop owners and managers to make an informed choice. We also take a look at compressors and torque wrenches. Should you invest in a scan tool? According to Ed Baard at Sulco Tools and Equipment, more than eight years ago Scan Tools were priced around $14,000, but now products such as the Autosnap are available from just under $3,000 plus GST, which makes them more affordable to the independent workshop owner. Ed says that investing in a scan tool will save wasted time and money and minimise the risk of losing a customer if they discover your workshop is ill-equipped to diagnose their vehicle, plus there is the potential to earn additional revenue from finding faults and fixing them. “It’s important for independent workshops to gain knowledge by using scan tools,” says Ed.
“Workshop technicians will not learn about the modern systems if all the scans are sent away to another workshop because of a lack of suitable equipment. There is the issue of time and money wasted sending the vehicle to another workshop and getting the driver back to work if the Auto Electrician is too busy to help immediately. “Scan Tools also save time when diagnosing vehicle faults,” says Ed. “You may with a bit of luck find the fault by testing all the sensors with a multimete but then you run the risk of creating more fault codes. “With a scan tool you will find the fault codes more often, and in many cases such as the airbags and ABS, all you have to do is clear the codes and the check lights will go out. Sulco introduces the iScan-II WT do some programming, says Sulco. On BMWs it can do single ECU offline programming that programmes series models, including the E65, E60, E90, and E70. On Volvos it has a generic ETM reload and the TCM update.

Sulco says that many workshops want more coverage on European models such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW, and the new Autoland iScan-II WT provides three scanning solutions in one unit, handheld, cloud, and interface module simulator (IMS). The Autoland iScan-II WT hand-held unit is very capable on Europeans, and it has all of the quick service features workshops look for in a scanner, such as reading and clearing DTCs, looking at live data values, activating components, clearing adaptations, and resetting service reminders. Coding the machine is easy, and it will even

This software lives in the cloud server, and users can download a user interface software to a PC, and run a RS232 cable between their PC and the i ScanII WT BU. The next step is to run the normal diagnostic connector from the BU to the car. (AC-EC + AC-EC 16 pin). Technicians choose the DOL from the BU menu choices, and then it is in the PC car link mode. Bring up the PC link software on the PC and choose the desired brand, model, and function. Now technicians are using the second scanner. Its software is different from that on the handheld. The DOL has a bug trace or logging feature that will allow feed back to the engineers so the software can grow more capable.
Interface Module Simulator (IMS) Autoland has engineered the WT to work as the factory interfaces do. The IMS has a large menu of choices. Technicians can pick IMS MB, IMS BMW, IMS VASS, IMS Jag/LR/Ford/Mazda, IMS TYT, IMS Volvo, or IMS Porsche! Each manufacturer has different licensing requirements and they change frequently, so it is best to check those out.
Each of the OE manufacturers has their own multiplexor. Mercedes has been using the C3Star and is moving on to the fibre optics capable C4 SDConnect. BMW used the yellow DK head for all until they required the orange OPS for many cars around MY 2004. Then it was the OPPS and now it is ICOM A, B, and C. Volvo has Dice. VW-Audi has the VAS5054A. Land Rover shares the VIM with Jaguar. Ford shares its VIM with Mazda, which is now a separate software. Toyota uses the Mongoose. Porsche has the KTS 650.
Each line differs in functionality. Mercedes DAS and Xentry is PC based, and many workshops have this software on PC. With it they can code and programme all that does not require SCN. Mercedes allows licensing for access to their FDOK server and SCN coding of TCM and ECM’s for additional fee’s. BMW’s DIS/TIS/SSS allows all coding and
tool FEATURE NEWS programming on MY cars up to 2010, as long as they do not have a higher i level than is available in the 04 of 2009 DIS update. BMW allows all functions VIA J2534 access to www.BMWTechinfo.com accept keys. Volvo is currently allowing the application of the Vida 2010A through the I-Scan II for diagnostics, not programming. Currently if workshops want to programme new Volvo modules they require a subscription and the factory Dice. VW Audi allows all diagnostic and requires subscriptions to its Geko server for SVM/Geko coding. Land Rover Jaguar allows all diagnostics through the WT. Ford allows licensing through the factory and has legitimised the i Scan II and the WT as acceptable interfaces. Toyota is allowing diagnostics as well as programming.

Take calibration seriously
According to HTC, industry leaders and regulators all agree that a calibrated torque tool must be used to manually check all wheel nuts for correct torque. In fact, it is recommended that a
manually calibrated torque wrench is used for the final tightening - and that impacting tools are not used to tighten wheel nuts to levels approaching the recommended torque settings. HTC says it is recognised that failure
to tighten wheel nuts to the specified torque, in the correct sequence, is one of the main causes of wheel loss or wheel insecurity. Over-tightening, causing stretched/broken studs or studs being pulled through the hub, is another cause of wheel loss/damage and downtime. HTC says that it is not worth the risk to use un-calibrated torque wrench. It says that a calibrated torque wrench is workshop owner's first line of defence against being liable as the cause of wheel loss, damages, or injuries. In HTC’s experience, the majority of torque wrenches that have not been calibrated in the last 12 months, are out of spec by more than the allowable margin of four percent. The solution is simple and easy
according to HTC because it carries out repairs with genuine parts, and it will calibrate and certify manual torque wrenches to international standards and under Telarc Q Base,from 1.2Nm to 1,500Nm onsite or larger torque tools up to 35,000Nm in its torque laboratory. HTC says it’s onsite service covers the whole country and eliminates almost all down time as workshops are not left without a tool. If repairs take longer than expected, HTC says it offers hire wrenches at a discounted rate to keep clients working. Limping Hyundai The AECS Helpdesk presents a case study of how it fixed a 2008 Hyundai H1 diesel van, with a replacement engine, that wouldn’t allow full acceleration without bogging down into limp home mode. Problem presented

This van had its sump holed in its original engine, losing all of its oil. The replacement engine came from an identical 2012 van which was damaged in an accident. The engines appeared to be identical so were most of the sensors and actuators. There were many problems getting the van to go, but it finally got going by swapping all the engine’s sensor and actuators. The engine was accelerating fine when driven easily but bogged down when the driver accelerates fully. After bogging down it went into limp home mode and only drove very slowly. Every time the engine goes into limp home a fault code is set: “rail pressure too low”.
The garage with the problem vehicle has technical support from AECS as part of an equipment purchase package. Since the garage only bought a Launch scan tool AECS tried to test as much as it could, but a number of oscilloscope recordings were needed. The vehicle was transported to AECS headquarters in Hastings, rather than being sent to an ATS scope owner, as would normally be done.
Where to start? As in almost all cases with common rail diesels, the most important signs are the rail pressure and the injector pattern. However, in this case the engine was running

well, it was only the rail pressure fault followed by the limp home that was the trouble. AECS decided to start with a scan tool recording
System knowledge Knowledge of the system is vital before technicians can do any diagnostics. The rail pressure in this Hyundai Bosch CP3 system is achieved by a gear lift pump inside the high pressure pump, which draws fuel from the tank and pushes the fuel through a suction control valve (SCV) into the high pressure pump. The high pressure pump pumps into the fuel rail, which has the injector tubes and a pressure sensor connected to it. Also connected to the end of the fuel rail is a pressure discharge valve (PDV). The SCV controls the pressure in the rail by allowing diesel into the pump. Allowing more diesel into the pump than what is used will increase the pressure and vice versa. The PDV controls the pressure in the rail by opening or closing the rail to the return a certain amount. The opening rate of the PDV valve is a variable electromagnetic force working against the variable hydraulic diesel fuel pressure. The ECU will determine the rail pressure set point (desired rail pressure) based on operating conditions. Both the SCV and PDV will get to work to make the actual rail pressure match the desired rail pressure by changing the current through both those valves, through duty cycle control.
Let’s measure AECS used the Launch scan tool’s recording function just to see where to go.
The actual pressure kept perfectly following the desired pressure while slowly accelerating to cut-off speed and decelerating (first part of the graph). When full acceleration takes place the desired pressure goes up to 136 MPa, but the actual pressure does not rise above 92MPa when the vehicle falls into limp home, yet the pressure is able to get up higher than 92MPa.
Why? Why does the pressure follow fine while slowly getting up to max and not when getting up to max pressure quickly? Remember there are no hints or tips under the bonnet. At first AECS suspected the frequency air mass sensor, as a quick snap open of the electronic throttle might have created a sudden air rush. The sudden air rush could have set the requested torque (and desired rail pressure) too high. AECS has seen a number of similar frequency air mass sensors reporting an air quantity which was too high. The SCV, pump and PDV might not have been able to raise the pressure quickly enough, causing the fault. Lowering the frequency with the ATS scope signal generator made this engine run beautifully. A new air mass sensor was ordered, but did not fix the problem.
A scope is a must This is where the scope is a must. AECS recorded with the ATS 5004d 4 channel scope. The channels recorded are: Ch1 Press dump valve, Ch2 Injector, Ch3 Suction control valve, Ch4 Rail Pressure sensor. The PDV (Ch1) and SVC (Ch3) were converted by the scope software into analogue lines. Both were set up so that an increase

NEWS tool FEATURE in the duty cycle should have an increase in pressure as result. AECS tested that with the ATS 5000 signal generator. First it accelerated gently, just like the recording with the scan tool.
With the ATS 5000 scope and signal generator AECS activated the SCV to fully open and the PDV to fully closed. This should increase the rail pressure dramatically on this running engine. No matter what
this system is the PDV discharge line, so if there is a faulty pressure relief valve, it must be this valve which is leaking.
Bingo AECS checked the return line with a clear hose while the valve was fully activated (closed) with the signal generator of the ATS scope. During light acceleration a tiny bit of return flow was visible, but during hard acceleration full flow took place, just as the kink appeared in the graph. A new rail with PDV was ordered and

Both the SCV and the PDV traces did not move to ridiculous values, meaning that the ECU has the rail pressure under control, i.e. the actual rail pressure follows the desired rail pressure. Next it had to accelerate fully.
AECS did, according to the scan tool it could not get the pressure above 110 MPa at 4500 RPM. The rail pressure should easily rise to double that. AECS supplied the pump with external diesel to make sure there were no restrictions in the supply. No difference.
fitted-with perfect results. The old PDV was taken apart and some dirt was found in the valve. The ball bearing needs to seal properly when the magnetic field of the solenoid pushes onto the ball. In this case a tiny bit of grit kept the valve open on a small leak, increasing the square surface area of the valve where the hydraulic rail pressure acted upon. An increase in pressure created a strong enough force to open the ball bearing valve in against the electromagnetic force the solenoid valve needle put on the

Conclusion This job ended up being very expensive as a result of the work all workshops involved had done. AECS spend 24 hours on this job, which puts it among the harder cases it has dealt with. Yet it was so simple in the end, it always is. reader reply 0130221

The full acceleration recording told an important story. The pressure did not rise linear: at the indicated area the pressure seems to suddenly stop rising quickly, yet the only items that are affecting the pressure (pump, SCV and PDV) seem not to be responsible for backing the pressure increase off.
What’s faulty? There could still be four possible faults: SCV, PDV, pump, rail pressure sensor. All of these items had been replaced at some stage. Testing was the next step.
Next AECS suspected the rail pressure sensor. It altered the signal from the rail pressure sensor to a higher value, but still the engine was bogging down with fully activated SCV and PDV valves.
Pressure relief valve Looking at the scope recording where the kink is in the pattern, it looks just like the pressure graph of a mechanical Diesel pump increasing rotational speed, when the mechanical pressure relief valve opens to the return. Time recognises Goodyear innovation The Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Company’s air maintenance technology has been named one of Time magazine’s “Best Inventions of the Year 2012.” Each year Time magazine’s technology editors list the year’s most important innovations. This year’s list includes 25 inventions, which in addition to Goodyear’s air maintenance technology, includes NASA’s Z-1 space suit, the Tesla Model S electric car and indoor clouds. Goodyear’s air maintenance technology (AMT) will help ensure the optimum tyre pressure is maintained and as a result, could mean substantial savings at the fuel pump. All of its components, including the miniaturised pump, will be fully contained within the tyre. “As soon as the pressure in these Goodyear tyres gets too low, they know it,” the Time editors wrote about Goodyear’s AMT. “An internal pressure regulator opens to allow air to flow into a pumping tube, and as the wheel
turns, the flattened part helps squeeze air from the tube through an inlet valve into the tyre.” “We are honoured to be named as one of Time magazine’s ‘Best Inventions of the Year 2012’,” said Goodyear’s chief technical officer Jean-Claude Kihn. “This award recognises the

White is the top colour
White and white pearl dominates the global automotive colour popularity ranks for the second consecutive year, according to the 2012 DuPont automotive colour popularity report. Black and black effect moves into second place in the global ranks, largely due to the increased popularity in the Asia Pacific market as this colour has a worldwide perception of high quality and luxury. Silver fell to third, as its popularity has waned. The DuPont report, in its 60th year, is the largest and longest running report of its kind in the automotive industry. It is the only report to include global automotive colour popularity rankings and regional trends from 11 leading
automotive regions of the world. White/white pearl moved to top the ranks in Europe in 2012, and was in the leading position as the most popular car colour in North America (U.S. and Canada), Japan, South Korea, Russia, South Africa and Mexico. Overall, white and white pearl represents 23 percent of the global market in DuPont’s 2012 report. Over the past decade, white has held significant rankings in automotive colour popularity and is widely seen in other consumer products worldwide. During this timeframe, white’s popularity had been highlighted across all vehicle segments, though historically, it had been most popular among the
truck segment. Past advancements in pearlescent whites enabled this colour to initially break into the luxury segments. “Today, white tri-coats are more readily applicable to the global manufacturing base and evoke quality and value among a variety of vehicle segments,” says DuPont colour marketing manager Margaret Lockhart. “Solid whites have been seen in vanilla shades, stone shades and the current preference of bright whites.” Black/black effect led among vehicle colour popularity in China, but took second place in the global ranks with 21 percent of the world’s share of automotive colour. Silver rounded out the top three global colour choices, topping the ranks in South America, Brazil and India, but slipped four percentage points to just 18 percent of the overall global automotive market from 22 percent last year. “Silver peaked during the start of the digital age between 2000 and 2006,” says Lockhart. “We’re seeing more luxury vehicle purchases now that the economy has started to stabilize, and vehicles painted black/black effect are seen as luxury status symbols in several key global markets.” Red, grey and brown/beige each gained a percentage point since last year’s report, while blue maintained equal share from the 2011 rankings.

The Ultimate Shine Competition was open for entries from September 1 to October 31 2012, allowing a time for contenders to prepare cars and get the photos needed for the competition. Meguiars says a high standard of entries was received this year. The high gloss and reflective shine on the cars entered was impressive, making it much harder to cast that final vote. The objective of the Ultimate Shine Competition is to reward the car(s) that best represent the term ultimate shine, therefore it came down to the reflection and shine seen on the

cars in the photos. The entry criteria was simple – the car had not just be shiny but have a mirror-like reflective shine. The Ultimate Shine title is given to the car that best represents what Meguiar’s stands for as a brand. The winning 1946 Ford Coupe was not only favoured by many of the judges, it also won a high percentage of the public votes, staying in the top five throughout the competition. The Ford Coupe has beautiful curves that reflect the surrounding environment, the depth of colour and wet look shine right down to the wheels and tires combined to give the best representation of what Meguiar’s is all about. Rachelle and Brendon Armstrong winning prize included $1,000 cash prize, a Meguiar’s product prize pack and a VIP photo shoot. The competition is scheduled to run again from September 2013 when the New Zealand’s Ultimate Shine title will be re-crowned.

Isuzu world champions Isuzu New Zealand recently won the World Isuzu Technicians Competition (I1-GP) in Japan, beating the best Isuzu technicians from around the globe, including defending champions Australia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, the UK and Japan. New Zealand champions Mark Broadbent and Ashley Bennellick, along with coach Trevor Moreland first represented New Zealand in 2011 and narrowly missed out on a podium finish but have now secured first place in the 2012 competition by the narrowest of margins over host nation Japan. Mark is from Auckland Truck Specialists, Ashley is from TDM (Transport Diesel & Marine) in Auckland and coach/manager Trevor Moreland is from Isuzu New Zealand. Many of the 25 international teams competing at the Isuzu Training Centre in Tokyo, have been training for more than six months for the event, testament to the high calibre of technicians in New Zealand.
The event consisted of a timed written exam and two timed practical events based on simulated “real life” service related processes including fault finding (electrical and mechanical) and an engine repair. The strongest area for the Kiwi contingent was the engine repair as they powered ahead of Japan to take the title. Isuzu aftersales manager Trevor Moreland said prior to this year’s I1GP that he was confident of achieving an even higher placing in Japan than 2011. “Ashley and Mark had worked incredibly hard this year to secure another national title and combined with their 2011 experience at the worlds I was confident they would do even better,” says Moreland. “I’m incredibly proud of my team for their hard work and dedication in their pursuit of becoming the best Isuzu technicians on the planet, and now they can truly say they are the best of the best.

Bearing elements for amphibious excavators For construction work in a harbour and land reclamation work amphibious excavators are used on all construction projects that are located on lakes, rivers or in coastal areas. But working in water also has its challenges according to ContiTech Vibration Control. Movements of the excavator and weight transfer resulting from the additional weight when the bucket is full cause various stresses and have an effect on the entire stability of the machine. ContiTech Vibration Control has developed a conical bearing suitable for the demands of amphibious excavators. For use as an excavator slew bearing, two separate bearing elements are braced against each other over a rod. Inside, the conical bearing has a large rubber pad, which provides good lateral stability due to its specially designed contour. Thanks to its high spring stiffness of 2,200N/mm, the conical bearing effectively reduces the swaying of the amphibious construction vehicle. Installation of the bearing means it is tear-proof and thus optimal for use in construction machines. It can also be used optionally as an un-

Iveco at Dakar 2013 Italian truck manufacturer Iveco recently competed at the Dakar 2013 with a squad of five rally trucks. Considered the world’s premiere off-road rally, the Dakar challenged teams over some of South America’s most difficult terrain. Dakar champion in 2012, Team De Rooy drove one Iveco Powerstar and four Iveco New Trakkers along the route which starts in Peru, before crossing through Argentina and ending in Chile. Iveco launched a project named “You are in the Dakar,” in collaboration with Radio Deejay, a popular Italian radio station, and Deejay TV. Through this initiative, an extreme sports journalist and blogger named Gross and Radio Deejay’s very own DJ Vic reported on the high profile event throughout race. Gross acted as the official voice of Team Iveco and its drivers (Miki Biasion, Gerard De Rooy, Hans Stacey, René Kuipers and Jo Adua) following each stage of the race and sent daily updates to http://
dakar.iveco.com/en. A filmmaker accompanied him, recording a Dakar-Iveco documentary about the race, vehicles and drivers along with behind-the-scenes footage from the team’s camp. The website http://dakar.iveco. com/en showed the race results and performance stats for Team De Rooy. Photos and video footage sent from South America were posted online for fans to review. The design of the website is divided into two sections. This idea reflected the two sides of an Iveco Trakker, a heavy vehicle that is ideal for both daily on/off-road transport applications, as well as extreme off-road situations such as the Dakar. The first section of the website profiles the New Trakker by showcasing its technical specification and highlighting what makes it stand out from the competition. The second section of the website is dedicated to the Dakar. All stages of the race were listed along with a dedicated team

Bernard Carpinter reports on the start of the 2013 motor racing championships The 2013 New Zealand motor racing championships got under way at Teretonga, with a few of the newgeneration NZV8s and a strong field of 15 international drivers for the Toyota Racing Series. The new-generation (Schedule TLX) NZV8s feature a common race-type chassis, extra power, six-speed sequential gearboxes and metal bodywork of any large four-door sedan for which a suitable V8 engine can be found. Three turned up at Teretonga, Holden Commodores for Aussie Jason Bargwanna and Cambridge driver Nick Ross, and a Toyota Camry for Hamiltonian Martin Short. Two other cars are under construction but could not be completed in time. And Short made history when he drove the brandnew Camry to victory in the opening race of the championship. He was the first to win an official

races such as the Daytona 24-hour. “That’s awesome, absolutely great,” Short said after the 10-lap race. “We only got the car going on Tuesday and it works great straight out of the box. It’s got good acceleration out of the corners, it puts the power down well.”

Former Bathurst 1000 winner Bargwanna chased Short through the opening laps of the first race but then an electrical problem forced him to slow and come into the pits. The crew disconnected the alternator and he returned to the race, running on the battery and finishing third in class behind Ross. But Bargwanna struck back to win the next two races, helped by strong starts. In the final race the new cars started behind the old ones and the Aussie was dynamite as he carved through the traffic to establish a five-second lead after half a dozen laps. “That was my strategy – to push hard in the early laps and use my experience in passing those cars,” he said. Short finished second both times, but he followed Ross for a long time in race two before Ross made a gear-change mistake and slowed momentarily. The field of the older (TL) cars was short of big-name drivers, most of whom had moved over to the rival V8 SuperTourer series. Talks are well underway involving NZV8s, V8 SuperTourers and MotorSport New Zealand with a view to uniting the two main series in 2014. If that happens the big championship would probably be spread out through the year rather than being crammed into a few months over the summer. New talent in the form of rookie Turua-based brothers AJ and Brad Lauder – just 18 and 16 respectively – made an impressive debut in the TL class, both driving Falcons. Between them they won
all three races, AJ taking the first and third and Brad the second. They had expert assistance from their grandfather Frank Radisich, a top driver in his younger days and of course the father of Paul Radisich. The 15 internationals competing in the Toyota Racing Series (TRS) included five returning for a second season. They are quality young drivers looking to advance their careers or just keep race-fit between seasons, and the format of five meetings on successive weekends is perfect for those based in the Northern Hemisphere where it is too cold to race in January. To illustrate the quality of the field, Felix Serralles (Puerto Rico) and Alex Lynn (UK) finished third and fourth respectively in the 2012 British Formula 3 championship, a very important series that has been a stepping stone to Formula One for many drivers. Aucklander Nick Cassidy won the 2012 series and he was defending his title. Invercargill’s Damon Leitch also returned to the series after success last year and Bay of Plenty driver Michael Scott moved up to the TRS after showing good potential in the last Formula Ford championship. Austrian Lucas Auer was the first to shine, qualifying fastest for the first race and winning it with apparent ease. He is the nephew of former F1 star Gerhard Berger and says his uncle is helpful with advice. Cassidy was second ahead of Lynn and Serralles. Brazilian Pipo Derani had pole position for race two

and he made full use of it, pulling away to win from Serralles, Lynn, Cassidy and Auer. The racing was mostly processional. The feature race, the Spirit of a Nation Cup, required a safety-car period early on, while Serralles was leading. On the resumption Lynn got a jump on him and pulled alongside, even slightly ahead, going into the very fast Loop corner at the end of the main straight. Their wheels touched – possibly because of a strong wind gust – and Lynn was launched high in the air, over a tyre barrier. The car landed upside-down and rolled onto its wheels. It looked bad but the British driver walked away uninjured and later praised the safety of the car’s chassis. Serralles carried on to win the race and take a fivepoint series lead over Auer, with Derani third overall and Cassidy fourth. The Kiwi had been forced to start the final race from 16th on the grid after striking tyre problems – including a puncture – during the second qualifying session. Christchurch driver James Munro, just 15, made a stunning debut in Formula Ford as he took the chequered flag in his first two races in the category, although a time penalty for jumping the start dropped him an official fourth in race two. Michael Collins (Christchurch) and Brendon Leitch (Invercargill) each won a race and shared the lead in the series.
Superbikes Meanwhile, the New Zealand Superbike Championships got under way, but without ninetimes champion Andrew Stroud, who had broken his collarbone in a crash at Manfeild in December. That seemed to leave the field open for Australian Robbie Bugden, who had already won the NZ title four times, but some of the other Kiwi riders were keen to have a crack at him. Bugden duly won the first two races at Ruapuna, including New Zealand Grand Prix. His only opposition came from fellow Suzuki rider Craig Shirriffs, the Feilding racer pushing the Aussie hard for the first half of the race before he had to slow down because his front tyre was losing its grip. Bugden races for Peter “Red” Fenton’s Christchurchbased Volvo Triple R team, and said the GP victory had special significance for them. “The team’s been through hell and back over the last two years,” Bugden said, referring to the earthquakes. “It’s great to do this for the team. I spend three or four months a year in New Zealand now. I love the place.” Round two at Timaru saw more of the same in race one, Shirriffs right on Bugden’s tail all the way but unable to pass. In race two Shirriffs again shadowed the Aussie star most of the way but this time he pounced just before the end, braking very late and shooting up the inside as they went into the chicane before the final straight. “That was my plan all along,” Shirriffs said. “I was faster than him there and if I’d passed him anywhere else he would have got me back. I went in a bit hot and ran wide. Robbie said afterwards he thought I wasn’t going to make the corner.” The finish to race two was particularly exciting because Hamilton rider Nick Cole (Kawasaki) had caught up with the leading pair and was right behind Shirriffs. Double win for Woolhouse
A record crowd watched Whangarei driver Daniel “Fanga Dan” Woolhouse (Castrol Edge Holden Commodore V8) claim his second win in a row at the third round of the 2012/13 Cody's D1NZ national drifting championship in the Bay of Plenty on Sunday. More than 5,000 spectators flocked to the two-day meeting held on a tight, technical temporary drift course in the grounds of Mount Maunganui's Bay Park stadium with the win seeing former D1NZ champion and recent Whangarei round winner Woolhouse further extend his early season lead in the overall series points standings and take the lead in the three-round BP Ultimate 98 triple crown competition from round one winner Curt Whittaker (Autosure 2JZ Nissan R34). On a day which saw top qualifier and three-time former D1NZ champion Gary “Gaz” Whiter (Tectaloy Nissan S14 V8) end his day against one of the unforgiving concrete walls and high-profile international “Mad Mike” Whiddett (Red Bull/Speedhunters Mazda RX7) fight back from a bruising Top 16 clash with Gary Tenana only to lose out to series young gun Nico Reid (Luxury Sports Nissan S15) in the Top 8, Woolhouse won the day from Aucklanders Andrew Redward (Achilles Tyre Mazda RX7 V8) and Hugo Mclean (Grabatool/Hoonigan Toyota Levin 20B). Mclean, who has developed a cult following around the world thanks to his now Mazda rotary-engined Toyota Levin, was the big mover of the meeting, battling his way into podium contention after qualifying in 25th position. While his passage into the Top 16 was helped when battle partner Bruce Tannock (Achilles Tyre Nissan S13) hit the wall, he had to work doubly hard for his other wins, having to go One More Time to beat defending Cody's D1NZ title holder Curt Whittaker to progress to the Top 8 and One More Time again against series pioneer Sean Falconer (Falconer Motorsport Nissan S13) to get to the Top 4. Though he was finally beaten there by eventual runner-up Andrew Redward, Mclean took on and beat Whangarei round runner-up Nico Reid in the battle for

the final podium spot, his first in the D1NZ Pro ranks. The big news in the Pro-Am support class was the performance of local driver Jodie Verhulst (Mag & Turbo Tauranga/Elf Toyota Supra), the country's top female drifter qualifying third and finishing second overall to round two category winner Darren Kelly (DKM Fabrication Nissan Skyline R32). Kelly, on the come-back trail after blowing a turbo and scoring no points at the first round of this season›s Cody›s D1NZ series at Manfeild, had another dream run at the Baypark stadium, claiming the top spot in qualifying before beating Vincent Hopkins (Nissan Skyline R32) in the Top 16, Joe Kukutai (Kukutai Transport Nissan Skyline R32) in the Top 8 and Michael Thorley (Femme Fatale Nissan Laurel) in the Top 4. Verhulst also had a strong early run beating Adrian Rivers to progress to the Top 8, Adam Davies to make it into the Top 4 and former motorcycle champion Sam Smith from Pukekohe to get into the final two. Of the other local drivers competing at the event, Cole Armstrong (V Energy Nissan Skyline R34) qualified eighth, but lost out on his Top 16 battle
with Nico Reid. Ben Belcher (Green Brothers Racing Mazda RX7) qualified 27th but lost to Armstrong in the Top 32 and Aden Omnet (Adenstyres.co.nz Toyota Altezza) qualified 16th but lost out to Sean Falconer in the Top 16. Jodie Verhulst's partner, Drew Donovan, also lost his Top 16 battle but it was always going to be a struggle; having run a bearing in his car's Chev V8 engine in practice on Saturday. He and his crew worked most of the night to fit a borrowed Nissan six-cylinder one so that Donovan could compete on Sunday. V8 Supercar racer Shane van Gisbergen (Federal Tyres Ford Falcon V8) returned to the Cody's series for his second outing in the Federal Tyres› Rattla Motorsport Ford Falcon at Baypark, and after qualifying 12th overall won his Top 32 battle against fellow Aucklander Sky Zhao (2 Degrees Nissan 570Z) but lost out to Zak Pole (Bullit HD Nissan Skyline R33) in the Top 8. The battle for Cody's D1NZ National Drifting Championship honours heads to Hampton Downs now where the fourth round of the 2012/13 title chase will be fought out over the March 01-02 weekend.

Fastest qualifier Clark Proctor (March 73A-1)
Kiwi racing great Ken Smith (Lola T332) was the toast of the large crowd at the first NZ Festival of Motor Racing - celebrating Denny Hulme meeting at Hampton Downs, the 71-year-old, in his 55th year of competition at a national level, completing a winning MSC NZ F5000 Tasman Revival Series trifecta with a lights-to-flag win in the final 15-lap feature. Defending MSC series champion Steve Ross (McRae GM1) ran the wily veteran close - the margin at the chequered flag just 0.139 of a second - and fastest qualifier Clark Proctor (March 73A-1) made up time on both over the last three laps, but as was the case in the other two MSC series races over the weekend, Smith was in front when it counted. “Clark actually said to me before the race that if I got alongside him he would let me go because he reckoned he‘d sooner hunt me down for 15 laps rather than have me hunt him down and I was fine with that, chuckled Smith.” And Steve Ross? “He did get alongside me at one stage with both of us sliding around a bit but I knew I could get four or five car lengths on him coming out of that final corner but whether I could have held him out for another one lap or 10 I don‘t know.” Smith and Proctor got the better of Ross off the rolling start but Ross had muscled his way past Proctor by the second lap and was ahead of the first of the UK visitors, Greg Thornton (McRae GM1), faststarting Australian Paul Zazryn (Lola T332) and fellow visitors Peter Dunn (March 73A/05), Michael Whatley (Surtees TS8) and Mark Dwyer (Lola T400) when the yellow flag came out while safety workers retrieved Bill Hemming‘s stranded Elfin MR8. After two laps under the yellow flag Smith got the best of the re-start with Ross and Proctor tucking in behind and easing away from Thornton, Zazryn, Whatley, Dwyer, Dunn and Brett Willis (Lola T330). As the race progressed Thornton retained a lonely fourth place, Zazryn, Wrigley and Dwyer remained close and category young gun Alan Dunkley (Lola T142) started making his presence felt. Brett Willis was
