The interior design of the Community Centre is inspired by the material palette of traditional rural Hungarian architecture, featuring rich, dark wood finishes and crisp white plaster textures. This fusion of warm, natural elements with a clean, bright aesthetic creates an atmosphere of modern sophistication while paying homage to local heritage. Double-height zones add a sense of openness and grandeur, shaping purposeful volumes for community interaction. The design seamlessly marries contemporary functionality with the enduring allure of Hungarian traditions, resulting in an elegantly crafted and culturally rooted Community Centre.

Lakni Kell Volunteering Project Year: 2023 Location: Pécs, Hungary Type of project: Volunteering Role: Team Leader, Builder Volunteering Work

40

In response to the urgent call by Dr. Dányi Tibor from the University of Pécs, my involvement in a project for Ági and Tibor, a married couple facing severe poverty on the outskirts of Pécs, exemplifies the transformative power of architecture. The couple previously lived in a small, weathered structure that posed numerous challenges. With generous material donations, and under the guidance of Dr. Dányi, I participated in a project where architecture students, utilizing skills honed in Building Constructions, designed and built a new home for Ági and Tibor. This new dwelling not only addresses their immediate needs but also represents a significant improvement in terms of weather protection, insulation, and overall living conditions—a testament to the impact architecture can have in uplifting communities facing adversity.

Selected Works

In this meaningful project, I had the privilege of leading a group of dedicated volunteer students, collectively striving to enhance the living conditions of Ági and Tibor on the outskirts of Pécs. Guided by the vision of Dr. Dányi Tibor from the University of Pécs, our collaborative effort aimed to bring positive change to the couple’s challenging circumstances. My role, though humbly assumed, involved hands-on contributions at every stage – from assisting in the erection of columns and roof structures to overseeing the meticulous installation of thermal insulation layers, guiding window installations, and managing the finishing touches. This experience was a profound lesson in the transformative power of architecture when applied with a humble and service-oriented mindset. It emphasized the importance of collective effort, underscoring how the amalgamation of our skills and dedication yielded a tangible improvement in the lives of Ági and Tibor.
