by balance i do not mean just the ability to hold one’s balance, but rather your relationship to the space around you. grace means your relationship to the stage and the space around you---the beauty your freedom, your discipline, your concentration and your complete awareness have brought you. if you have no form, after a certain length of time you become inarticulate. your training only gives your freedom. the ideal of technique is the absence of strain; it is the rhythmic building of the body to a perfect form. it is not important that you should know what a dance means. it is only imortant that you should be stirred.

A market place spans the distance between two divided sites both currently undergoing a vast degree of redevolpment in the northern region of Paris. . This connective space of inhabitation for the epicurious will be nourished by the diversity of forthcoming projects, including a major new tram line. Given the relationship between Paris and tourism, the hotel level of this floating market provides an alternative experience to the traditional imagining of Parisian life. While guests can readily integrate into the market over the course of the day, program arrayed along the walkways of the hotel encourage a social nightlife to emerge past the market's closing hours.

A birdwatching space designed for two bodies and the accommodation of observation, rest, meditation, and inter connectedness with the natural. The basis of this project was to develop a 20x20 volume of inhabitable space based upon an abstracted square from Rothko’s painting. The resultant space is the union of two structural systems, a branchlike one exposed to nature and the linear set of members housing two intimate spaces for bathing and sleep, mark rothko’s untitled painting

A device to create a performance of shadowplay for the wearer as one meanders through the city. The experience of urban traversal is transformed into a process of wayfinding through the apertures of the fabric in harmony with an ever changing field of shadows visible only to the body within. The enclosure of fabric is developed through the rotation of pattern pieces about the seams of Le Cigale dress. The oxford shirt becomes the building material through which this logic is executed. le cigale dress pattern & oxford shirt
PERCEPTUAL DEVICE
This fashion atelier is bound by the space created from the intersection of the opera’s existing grand stair and an undulating fabric that weaves its way throughout. A pair of mirrored chevron cuts are joined and gradated in scale to both manipulate the curvature of the structure and create programmatic niches throughout. The structure becomes an exhibition space through which the design process is filtered and made visible to the public in any number of stages. metropolitan opera, nyc
FASHION ATELIER
A mixed-use center housing a range of programmatic elements from a cafe on the lobby floor to a diving pool overlooking sky and, in between, a layering of high energy spaces. The main circulatory route cuts through to create an internal chasm through which all athletic programs are connected. The sensation of openness is built upon by the skin of the building as it responds to both the circulation within and the surrounding urban soundscape. This movement reveals a hybrid louvre system of pipes/mullions that channel rainwater into the building's water supply. These louvres illuminate at night describing to the city the amount of rainfall captured within.

This project required that our team design and build a 1:1 installation piece to accommodate seating at a site of our choosing. The existing nature of our chosen site, the concrete planters located outside Wurster Hall, was to significantly inform our design for a series of continuous wood members that flowed from and around the existing concrete. The repetition of a simple lap joint and specific set of angles was implemented to achieve a seating space in which two bodies could independently enjoy a moment of reprieve under the tree’s shade. The adjacent surface area of the concrete planter could thus function as armrest or table top. wurster courtyard, berkeley LOW LINE BENCH avec judy li & lisa espinosa

Located within the Flatiron Building, this project required the construction of a screen responsive to the experience of the surrounding urban context from the perspective of an individual sitting upon Charlotte Perriand’s B306 Chaise. The angles deriven from Perriand’s Chaise are deconstructed and then reassembled using the original vertex points from B306 as connective nodes. The resultant structural web is interlaced with translucent fabric as to create a screen of variable opacity. The local passerby activates the puncuated ‘holes’ within the screen in peering through to discover what or whom rests beyond the screen. flatiron building, nyc
INSTALLATION SCREEN FOR B306C
An image can convey the nature of a given space within its frame. The reconstruction of a space as captured within Matta-Clark’s collage using three point perspective, however, reveals it to be distorted and unlike the subject from which the original images were distilled. The generation of a plan for this distorted space draws further contrast to our spatial perceptions of conventional typologies, here being the office space. gordon matta-clark’s office baroque, 1977
THE PICTURE PLANE
The image above is of a room as seen through the reflection of a mirror pivoting upon a door. The frame of this mirror is observed from a separate stationary mirror in an adjoining room. In increments, these captured frames create the seam through which an entry way is reconstructed. However, it is the white space on these pages that constitute the actual, real entry space and what we see is in fact a virtual space. entry hall, parisian flat
THE SEAM
A map can describe to varying degrees of detail the environment one may expect to encounter if followed. But if that map is drawn from a spatial event, it is at once a singular entity. Our map is and is not of the arrondissement to which the Palais Garnier belongs. It is the map of a game played within the city. The simple assemblage of a peanut butter sandwich defines the lines through which Paris is redrawn. Our collective maps when overlapped are of the same event and region, but our spatial experience have vastly different boundaries. MAKING OF A PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICH IN PARIS: -Only one ingredient to be collected per location -Time must be noted for the discovery of each ingredient -Sandwich to be constructed on the opera steps -Map to be drawn at completion of task -No external maps may be utilized -No contact between players until reunited on steps palais garnier, paris THE DRIFT avec anthony graham
