REPRESENTATION STUDIO

STUDIO DESCRIPTION Location: Plano, Illinois Program: Visitors Center Focus: Form and Representation This studio emphasized the process rather than the outcome. Each student was assigned a different Mies van de Rohe building. From there, a series of manipulations were preformed to create a new form. - Unfold original - Impose new grid - Refold The outcome is a strange new form with the material characteristics of Mies’ original building. This class was a series of creative exercises focused on graphic representation and form making.

CHAPEL: MASSING EXERCISE
CONTENT 007 Interior Rendering 008 Axon 009 Massing Diagram PROJECT DESCRIPTION Location: None Program: Church Focus: Material This was a creative exercise using only primitive shapes to create forms. Using sharper shapes on the outside and rounder shapes on the inside to create a contrast between the interior and the exterior. In terms of material, concrete was used relentlessly throughout. A combination of CMU’s and smooth concrete was used to emphasize the project’s reoccurring notion of duality.

THE SIXTINE CHAPEL
CONTENT 011 Exterior rendering 012 Exterior rendering 013 Diagrams 014 Sections 015 Plans PROJECT DESCRIPTION Location: Los Angeles, CA Program: Chapels + Community Center Focus: Language In this project, I experimented with using a very limited formal language. The entire project is made up of cylinders. The vertical cylinders are chapels, and the horizontal cylinders make up the community center. The street level chapels have a highly regulated exterior, but have random and irregular interiors. Smooth concrete is used to make the project appear as an extension of the sidewalk-- so that any pedestrian may feel comfortable enough to enter any number of the non-denominational chapels.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Location: Angels Knoll, Los Angeles Program: Motel Focus: Modules This project looks to create a highly-differentiated faรงade using only a small number of moves. Eight modules are used as the base for the enitre project-- these modules vary in scale throughout the project. The result is a blatant exploitation of scale on the faรงade that uses the lightheartedness of shape to inform the narrative that happen within.

Axonometric floorplan of level 8 showing the connection of the building corridor to California Plaza. This drawing also illustrates the context: Angel’s Flight and Angels Knoll Park. Contextually, the building bridges the gap between Bunker Hill and the Old Financial district that are currently segregated by class. The bridge-like massing of the building serves to visually and functionally connect these two areas by mixing the contrasting programs within the districts and offering an alternative path of circulation from Cal Plaza to Hill Street. The massing was generated solely using the site’s many restrictions.
