Este libro es el resultado de varios meses de experimentación e investigación en el tema de minerales, sus formas, sus estructuras y sus compuestos químicos. El enfoque al finl se redujo a los cuarzos. No se supone que sea un guía literal or una traducción de un libro científico aunque su estructura se base en la de uno. Las imágenes que se va a topar son producto de una mezcla entre ciencia y artes gráficas que se supone deben ilustrar la simpleza de los elementos en crudo, lo que los compone, y que son los que componen los paisajes en las fotos y en nuestros propios paisajes. Nuestro planeta esta vivo, siempre cambiando. Crece bajo nuestros pies, y va a seguir creciendo y cambiando y transformándose, uniendo continentes, girando alrededor de nuestro sol por millones de años. Algunos científicos incluso sugieren una era en la que los humanos ya ni van a existir. Esto no se supone que haga que uno se preocucpe por la cantidad de años que nos quedan o si es cierto o no. Sino más bien que lo haga sentir como que pertenece, no sólo como un ser en sociedad, sino como parte de una especie que tiene su propio tiempo y espacio en la magnífica existencia terrestre.
This book is the accumulation of months of research on minerals, their forms, structures and chemical compounds, where the primary focus is quartz in particular. It is not meant to be a literal guide or a translation of a science book, even though it is inspired by the structure of one. The images you will encounter are the product of the mixture of graphic and science, they are meant to illustrate the simplicity of the raw elements that form the landscape in these pictures and our own surroundings. Our planet is alive, in constant change. Under our feet it grows. It will grow and change and morph, bringing continents together, spinning away around our sun for millions of years to come. Some scientisits even suggest that humans may not exist by then. This idea is not intended to make anyone worry about the length of our existence, the years left or whether it is true or not. Instead, it will make you feel like you belong, not only as a social being, but as part of a species that has its own time and space in the ever so magnificent Earthly existence.

This project was inspired by my personal admiration for geology and geological processes. Before deciding to learn graphic arts I had a very strong interest in science and geology in particular. These past months I have been able to explore both and being able to combine science and graphics has been one of the best things about FMP. After weeks of thinking about what I wanted to say, “ If man was crystal” came to me as the ideal name because, even though we do say we are related to all things that inhabit this planet, I think we don’t really believe it. For me, that’s the beauty of trying to understand the Earth and how it is formed, going beyond nations, language, age and all the other human limitations. Hot rocks and water have formed our planet, and it doesn’t matter where you are from, it is something we all can relate to; the beauty of genuine belonging. If we were made of crystal it would be more obvious, but our mortal fleshiness doesn’t allow us to understand that these rocks are part of the raw elementsthat also makes us. Having said this, it is easy to understand why, as humans, we don’t see ourselves this way. I can only hope to ignite curiosity inside someone and that this curiosity will eventually becomes fascination about the anatomy of our planet. I do hope you enjoyed it.
