SCIENCE CENTER KAUNAS

INTERNATIONAL DESIGN CONTEST SITE AND MASSING the basic volume is defined by the main axis of the urban fabric and the river, resulting in a two storey volume to accommodate the requested 9000 sqm programme.

Science Center Kaunas is an iconic and sustainable building; a catalist to rethink and improve Neumas Island while preserving and enchancing its natural beauty. It is a place which invites visitors and the community to meet nature, science and technology. The intensions to preserve the natural areas and to connect the building to the urban fabric and led us to locate the Science Center on the Northeastern side of the Island. The site dictated a triangular shape with a clear distinction of functionality on each side of the building

The interior spaces of the Science Center are organized around an exciting, dynamic entrance hall. It is under a full-height atrium providing plenty of daylight. White surfaces make the space even lighter and emphasize the purity of the dynamic form of the hall. The use of wooden surfaces intend to make the interiors more friendly and welcoming.

ODOO PROJECT SOLAR DESIGN

Solar design the house achieves a positive energy balance by focusing on and optimizing both passive and active solutions. The surfaces facing south were doubled, letting us use actively the solar power by the cells on the southern side of the summer wall while the house can exploit the heat gains in winter. Because of the lightweight construction we designed a unique semi-passive system using water as dynamic thermal mass.

BUILT BY OURSELVES constructing the house in less than three months helped to understand our own design, the process to develop a project, giving lot of practical experience for the future.

22

— 23

PREFABRICATION & TRANSPORT a major challenge of Solar Decathlon is to assemble the house on the competition site in only ten days after transportating it from 2500 kms. To have transportable sized elements, the house was divided into four plus two highly prefabricated modules.

COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN

SCALED PAVILION

INTELLIGENT TECTONICS V1.0 was an international workshop for parametric design and fabrication strategies.

PARAMETRIC WORKSHOP

The workshop focused on the practical implementation of computational design methods in real-life architecture to the various facets of computational design thinking: from the early design phase, through the schematic planning,

projects, introducing the participants

to the fabrication and the assembly of the physical artifact. As a product of the workshop, an exhibition booth was designed incorporating a modular,

re-usable performative plate structure.

Our proposal won the 1ST PLACE in the competition of the workshop and is scheduled to be realized in January 2017 at BAU MUNICH, GERMANY.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The project is based on a system of customised elements aligned on a surface that defines the space of the pavilion. The components are made from bended sheets of ETALBOND, which have been perforated and manifactured according to an algorithm that defines their dimensions and orientation according to the curvature of the surface at any given point.

The structural resistance of the pavilion has been achieved by the overal shape, the connections between the components and the physical properties of the material. The perforations on each element are designed in a way that allows visualization of branding only from certain points of observation and perspective deformation.

COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN

BEHAVIOURAL NETWORKS Our intention was to unite and reconnect the fragmented urban fabric. Three university campuses withouot access to proper outdoor facilites and separated by heavy traffic, disconnected, somewhat abandoned blocks and an outdated podium-parking structure are calling for improvement.

MODELLING CASE STUDIES 1.0

RHINO GRASSHOPPER

Having a strong interest in varoius aspect of architectural design including projects with a focus on sustainablity and prefabrication; the last few years I got more and more fascinated about the posibilities parametric design has to offer.

I developed most of my skills via online tutorials of Thinkparametric, Studio Air and computational methods courses of University of North Carolina, limited tasks in daily architectural practice and by attending DesignMorphine’s Intelligent Tectonics V1.0 parametric design and fabrication workshop.

My aim working on the case study of Herzog & de Meuron’s Beijing Olympic Stadium was not to precisely follow and copy the building as it is, but rather to recreate the underlying logic of the geometry and the creative process, similar to having a work-in-progress model during design development.

GRADUATION PROJECT

CULTURAL CENTER SEVILLE, SPAIN

LA FLORIDA BLOCK

CONTEXT the famous La Florida block lies in the intersection of Sevilla’s two major traffic arterias. Menendez Pelayo sorrounds the historic center connecting the site to the Real Alcazar, Plaza de Espana and other monuments. The perpendicular Luis de Montoto is connecting the airport, the railway station, industrial zone and new residential areas to the city center. Plaza de la Reincarnación, the hub of the contemporary renewal of the city is also nearby. The plot itself is a scar, a reminder of the economic crisis: a protected, classicist facade sorrounds the empty, abandoned construction site of a cancelled development.

CULTURAL CENTER SEVILLE, SPAIN

CONCEPT & FUNCTION DIAGRAMS

TRADITION the concept of the cultural center was inspired by spanish patios and walled gardens, the outdoor spanish lifestyle as well as activated open air areas of contemporarycultural buildings.

The focal point of the project is the flexible plaza - the place of a wide range of cultural activites - sorrounded by the preserved facade, serving as a filter from noise and visual distractions of heavy traffic.

To maximize its surface, the necesarry functions are organized in two compact volumes: library, exhibition places, workshops, café and administration on the northern side; auditorium on the south.

CONTRAST the real challenge of the project was to figure out the building’s relationship with the exisiting historical facade. Contrary to the heavy, solid masonry work the new building is transparent and translucent, light and flexible. The top floors appear to float over the facade. They are clad in perforated metal sheets, providing the necessary shading while still allowing generous views from the inside out. The glass volume of ground and the first is fully glazed, appearing to be the continuation of the central outdoor plaza. Similarly to the floating box, the facade of the lower floors is detached from the existing walls, enhancing the contrast of the two structures. The overhanging volume of the floating box provide the necessary natural shading against the strong Andalusian sunshine. During the nigth the perforated facade turns the otherwise closed floating box into a glowing, transparent object, a fresh contemporary addition to the existing urban fabric.

UNFINISHED COMPOSITIONS

I was always interested in drawing, recognising it as a powerfool design and communication tool for an architect. During my studies I was chosen to the elite drawing classes of the University. As I felt the need to develop my skill not just in architectural drawing, I also learned in private schools Corvin Rajziskola and Szuterén Studio from painter Tamás Szigeti.
