HUI WANG
Hui Wang is an architectural adventurist who has just finished her journey at California Institute of Architecture, LA as a March. 2 Student.
Born in Shanxi, China, a province with 80% ancient architecture which are built before 14 century and earned her Bachler's degree of architecture from Chongqing University in Chongqing, in which city there are plentiful magical architecture created under the rigorous orographic conditions, from where Hui Wang gained a conspicuous professional literacy, creative way of thinking and debating and ambitiousness to break through the boundary of architectural field as an architectural designer.
She practiced her architectural ideas in Beijing, China as a designer of large-scale public buildings, city complex programs and TOD programs in WDCE. She started to think about the relationship and interaction between the city environment and human-being and attempted to set conversation for people to perceive surroundings in more friendly ways.
Now she is on her way to break through the boundary between architectural rational action and perceptual visual experience with digital techniques with thoughtful and energetic predecessor and peer artist in SCI-Arc.

At the undergraduate level, the emphasis is on developing basic architectural concepts and design literacy, focusing on the real urban environment, especially the collision between the urban sprawl brought about by China’s rapid development and the vast rural environment under long-term historical and natural development in terms of conceptual perception, human activities, and space. Following this, applied my knowledge to challenge the relationship between human life and architecture in both concept and existence and try to improve it.

The main part of the work practice is to carry out the schematic design of large urban complexes. Before refining the architectural design itself, the relationship between the building and the urban environment needs to be explored, including the interface with the municipal network and public transportation. I have been able to improve my skills for teamwork, negotiation and coordination, and systematic thinking.

Starting with the mental and physical difference between children and adults for the purpose of solving the “In between“ spatial relationship during the communication among fixed-age students.
The children and adults were placed in the room which satisfied their own needs, and the part between rooms through revolving tem became the place of communication. This way of thinking that focused on study did not participate directly in shaping the sapce but reflect on the relationship between the sapce and man, so it avoided subconscious spatial operation because of inertial thinkg to some degree.

In 2009, the church is officially proteced by Nanchuan government as an alive relic. In the preliminary investigation about the impression and feeling about the church, 60% of the residents has no interest in catholic but has the desire of spending time in a well built and planted silent place. It reminds me of the traditional Chinese garden, especially in houses, which is always silent with great greenary and scenes from different sightviews.

Chinese cities has been developing dramatically in the wake of the exponentially flourishing of the economic. However, there is always new dilemma for Chinese people to solve between the modern life and the traditional environment.
Many traditional town in Chongqing city is the result of thousands and hundreds of years exploration of living better and the buildings there is the most suitable to people and their lives.
And then, modern time comes by.
It brings the boundary at center point of the city. Wherever a piece of land is suitable for modern building, then do it. If it is not large enough to build high buildings, the area is abandoned.
After several decades constracting, there is boundary in towns, and what want to do is to sew a zip on the boundary and complete the town again.

SLZ Center is located in the South Fourth Ring Road of Beijing, in a high-density urban environment and has high requirements for builtup area. SLZ Center is a highly integrated urban complex with a high degree of functionality. It contains a three-story mixed-use commercial center, including ten-room scale cinema with i-max. The highrise part is distributed with hotel-style apartments and rental office buildings. The underground function is a one-story supermarket and a two-story underground parking garage. Due to the special location, this project requires a high standard of human defense engineering underground and a unified design with the space of the supermarket. This project, due to its extremely comprehensive nature, posed a greater challenge to the spatial and structural design, and took more than two years for the general drawing design and schematic design alone.

This project is a large data center industrial park located in Shandong Province. We are mainly responsible for the campus design and architectural design of the database and small companies’ villas area. The small company incubator includes a centralized office building along the street and a corporate villa. Enterprise Villa is a single building designed based on micro and small business start-ups. Under China’s policy of supporting micro and small businesses, it is a building type with clear characteristics of the times, and they are simplified from the form of a single villa, with less space division and a wider scope of application, allowing for free secondary space creation and division. At the same time, due to the simple façade and huge volume of the database room, there was some discussion during the design process on how to shade the data room in order not to destroy the landscape of the corporate villa. However, in the end, the design was not implemented due to cost control.

The University of Chemical Engineering Campus Project is a brand new campus of the University, which is located in Changping District, Beijing. Detailed architectural design was required for all buildings within the scope shown. In my part, I was involved in the architectural design and construction drawing coordination of the second phase of the student apartment, as well as the architectural design of the laboratory building. also worked on frequent communication and adjustments with the owner.

This project is located in the old city center of Beijing. How to build a large volume new building in a small scale traditional building block is a huge challenge. After determining the initial design of the building’s massing and internal functions, we teamed up for a long discussion on the relationship between the building facade and the city. The response to the urban surroundings was a major theme of the project. During the design process, we considered the image of the building’s legacy from different periods

XINGHUO Station is a very special project, leaving us with a narrow site five kilometers deep along the railway line but only fifty meters wide. All the sites had to be discussed in the context of the forces and resonance problems caused by the tracks and the telltale railroad. It was very difficult to develop the project commercially. We finally set the function as a complement to the surrounding community. Since the length along the line is very long and the communities involved are very complex, the final functional distribution combined with the idea of landscape architecture provides a very rich variety of small-scale activity types. We are very happy that we can provide such a grand scale but detailed functional landscape “bridge” to the city through our design.

Functional Group Distribution
The functional distribution relies mainly on the proximity of the community properties to provide a complement to the community’s functions. For example, small office building groups are set up next to large residential communities, and extended commercial and entertainment building groups are set up next to industrial parks and art districts. The community activities and dining functions are then arranged in a nodal mode so that each community can conduct daily activities such as dining within a limited distance.

The project is located in the northeast corner of Shougang Industrial Park, adjacent to two main roads. The project underwent nearly a year-long negotiation before the specific building principal design was undertaken. The main focus was on the arrangement of the stormwater pumping station and duty room at the large full intersection and the way to connect to the metro line 6 extension and S1 light rail station site. In the architectural design process of the legacy industrial buildings were comprehensively evaluated and retrofitted to maintain the integrity of the industrial plant skyline, but also to have a better landmark of the site. The project is small in scale but rich in challenges from all sides.

Moss, the most unimpressive plant in nature, always shows as extending groups on moisty rocks and tree trunks. Moss is also the most sociable plant in nature. They grow to meet the boundary of other groups, communicates, fights and then overlaps commensally.
Moss is colorful, especially in damp air under the scattered light. Color changes, like uncertain life, like express its emotion. Moss is polymorphic but unimpressive, we cannot realize the shape differences unless we are close to them enough.
A rock-like building is ready for moss’s growth simulation. Sharp rock becomes downy when covered by moss. Shadowed holes for multiple layers of moss accumulation. The sunny side of the rock has thinner moss, for sunlight to go through the shell to light the interior up. after the night comes, the rock light it up from interiors and the warm light emits through holes of the shell, light the moss, makes it more energetic.

The whole interior is a huge communicable space with a high atrium with scenic lifts. Open spaces are always on the side of the atrium such as The music library, the exhibition, the rehearsal space and some rest corners. We can lean on the armrest of 3rd floor and listen student bands performance at 4th floor, or try to enjoy the performance at the bottom – the main stage.

MASSMOCA is a historical museum campus surrounded by beautiful greenery-yallery hills, located in north Adams, Massachusetts.
When we see through the panorama of the MassMoca, we find it is a historical campus surrounded by beautiful greeneryyallery hills. But when we talk about a museum, it appears to be a building in our mind. So how to redefine the group building, not only one museum, is the main topic in our project.
Firstly,such huge a campus has a low utilization rate. We found that the events are mainly raised in March, April and September, with little activity during the rest of the year. We also researched the commercial activities in the town, such as the amount of the restaurants and accommodations. We found that it is not enough to handle such a large number of visitors. based on people's passion for this place and the Demand needed here exceeds the current supply. So we can transform this place into a village, which would be fully used to contain more functions and activities.

That is because they are in the process of understanding the world, they are curious about everything, every normal thing which we are used to pay no attention to. For children, the school is the start place to answer, in order to recognize the world.
But it is obviously wrong if a school can only answer without asking. We all know that we sapiens achieve the life today, by questioning unimpressive things like falling apple.
This project is trying to find a way of blurring the definition of normal things so that kids will always ask what it is and find an answer themselves. On the other hand, the school will also keep asking questions, to challenge the defined world.

Clematis is a group project in which 2 Power Copies arecreated, each representing an abstraction of the vine plants and the flower. The vine plants climb across the skin of buildings, walls, fencings to integrate natural beauty, shading and cooler spaces in our architecture environments.
The two powercopies are instantiated on a 5m x 5m grid and generate sshapes that are intertwined together to create a cohesive composition. A series of external parameters like distance can influence certain characteristics of the shapes. Form and color can be controled using the parameters.

The adidas ARENA forms a distinctive landmark on the adidas World of Sports campus in Herzogenaurach. The new office and reception building marks the campus's main entrance, welcoming visitors to the adidas group's World of Sports headquarters and lending it a strong visual identity.
There is three design concept of the ARENA: Clear architectural symbol, flexible frame construction and Material efficiency.
It is 143m x 118m at a whole size and 67 inclined columns, in which including 10 groups of four columns and 9 groups of three columns. Inside the building there are 9 vertical openings pass as light wells and for vertical transparency.

Architectural creations can be precisely categorized.
This stems mainly from some basic temporal characteristics of architecture itself. In the case of houses, for example, they are characterized by sloping roofs in most parts of the world, which are determined by the climate. In areas where rain and snow are plentiful, human beings coincidentally choose to protect their houses from collapsing with sloping roofs. On the other hand, houses are built on the ground, so the condition of the ground has a great influence on the construction. In earlier times, human beings were not capable of modifying the ground and had to adapt to local conditions. Apart from the two prerequisites of the sky and the ground, which would limit the basic shape of the house, man had the power to create the house in terms of arrangement, decoration and colors related to life.
One of the reasons call this table the periodic table is to express that buildings can be classified precisely according to certain laws. Another reason is that there are spaces in this table where no examples are found, but which logically should exist, and these spaces are both a reflection and an inspiration for design.
After filling in the abstract diagrams according to the rules, found some more cases that do not fall within the scope of modern architecture or house building according to logic, including ancient architecture and virtual design of anti-Newtonian mechanics. And some other fill-in-the-blanks are completely created. Whether built or not, this periodic table of elements can be summarized as a more pure and essential architecture after removing personal aesthetic differences. This architecture, I call it the relationship between man and nature.

CONTRIBUTION: GRAD Thesis Work
The projects selected for the DD course are STUDIO students’ work from the previous year. The course consists of a group of nine students. The content includes structure and detailing, mechanical, electric and plumbing system. Calculations and analysis includes environment, fire, egress, ADA and cost estimate.
