BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING, KEEP THIS IN MIND: Breathe. Calm down and breathe. If you are reading this, it means that you are currently or about to be face to face with an alien life form. First of all, DO NOT RUN OR ATTACK THE ALIEN. Take your time and read through this manual. This guide will give you a stepby-step run down of how to make mankind’s first encounter with an alien life form a successful, peaceful and productive meeting. If you are reading this manual, it is assumed that the alien is not openly hostile; otherwise you would not be able to read this at all (The RUN! Alien survival kit can be purchased in the same stores where BREATHE is sold). This guide will also clear up an misconceptions on how to communicate with the alien or any assumptions on how the alien will behave. Now that has been said, turn the page to see what your primary goals for this meeting should be.

PRIMARY GOALS Before you even begin the encounter, you must first prioritize what you intend to do. The main goals for your encounter should be the following:

1 2 3 4

To find additional witnesses and/or record the encounter To prove humans as a curious and intelligent species To establish a means of communication If fluid communication is possible to determine the I.P.N.P. (Identity, purpose, needs, plans) of the alien.

IDENTITY Identity means establishing a basic way of referencing the alien. (I.e. I am Sam, a male human) and their relationship to the rest of their race (i.e. Are they a rogue expedition, or an ambassador for their collective race, or faction of their race).

PURPOSE This means determing the reason why the alien came to Earth. However, this can be difficult, in that this can often involve the aliens cultural reality (i.e. War), religion, and or customs and be completely incomprehensible to humans. Alternatively, if the alien’s purpose is akin to a scientific agenda, it may provide a valuable opportunity for cooperation or collaboration.

10

NEEDS This means determing the needs of the alien for survival. This may be related to the purpose of their visit. It may be limited to a certain location or device due to a reliance on a certain resource. Their needs may provide an opportunity to establish a cooperative partnership, thus avoiding potential sources of conflict.

PLANS This means clarifying their method(s) or strategy for securing their needs. Be aware that the alien might be reluctant to communicate its plans, or it might not have any plans at all if it crash landed or is simply on its equivalent of a leisure vacation.

11

GENERAL BEHAVIOUR GUIDELINES Stay still and do not run away. Most animals will attempt to run away. You should prove to the alien that you are different from the other organisms, and intelligent and curious as well.

Ensure that your movements are steady and deliberate. They will have a completely different understanding of body language and there is no telling how they will react to your motion. By moving steadily you are less likely to alarm or threaten them.

Do not act aggressively or try to fight the alien–they will win. Period. If they have reached our planet, it is most likely that they will be using technology that will be incomprehensible to us and far more advanced, to a point that we would be no threat to them. The fact that you are still alive means that they are not likely to harm you. If they wanted to harm you, there would be nothing you could do to stop it.

Do not assume they are infallible and know everything. Although they will most likely have more advanced technology, they will be trying to learn just as much as you are.

12

Breathe deeply and slowly. This will aid in keeping you calm and help prevent you from going into shock or hyperventilating.

If you are feeling faint or dizzy, sit down slowly to avoid passing out. The last thing you want to do is fall down, hit your head and fall into a coma when you are mankind’s ambassador.

Be humble and open minded. As they have developed on a different planet and have much more advanced technology than we do, they are likely to have a completely different understanding of how our universe’s physics and chemistry function than we do. Remember, it wasn’t that long ago that it was a commonly accepted truth that our world was flat.

Take notes on everything you observe. Anything, from their skin texture to the colour of the glow from their technology can, have major scientific significance.

13

RECORDING THE ENCOUNTER The most important thing you can do is record the encounter and ensure that there will be witnesses to the encounter besides you. Remember, if no one else was there, you might as well be crazy. fig 1

RECORDING VIDEO

fig 1

Immediately commence recording video and audio with the provided camera in the kit and any additional recording devices you may have, such as a smart phone or tablet.

Take care to not use any devices that may startle the alien. This includes flashes on camera, devices with shutter sounds or anything excessively noticeable.

14

fig 2

fig 2

Ensure that you never block or otherwise impede the recording of video or audio. Your recording should be clear and in focus to reduce the risk of being declared ‘just another bigfoot-loving nut job.’

Ensure that you have enough storage space on your personal device. There is no chance that there will be anything on your phone or camera that is more important than an alien sighting.

15

fig 3

fig 4

Record any small details you may notice about the alien. This includes anything from particular organs, devices or clothing to repeated gestures or sounds.

If possible, immediately call an emergency phone number (i.e. 911). Explain that there is a car crash or similar emergency and that there are injured people on the site, detail the location and immediately hang up. DO NOT say that there are aliens, as the call will likely be dismissed as a prank call. DO NOT use an emergency that would attract police. Ideally, you want to attract paramedics, as they are not trained to react aggressively and they are likely to have a greater understanding of biology than a police officer or fireman. 16

fig 4

fig 4

Involve other people and alert the local media. The more witnesses, the better. You can only be called crazy if you’re the only one who saw it.

If the aliens wish to take you away from your location : Leave behind your personal recording device with a note explaining what is on it and only take the provided camera. The camera within this kit is designed to be incredibly durable and have a much greater storage capacity than a regular one. Incase you don’t return, your personal device will still have a record of your encounter.

17

HOW TO COMMUNICATE After you commence recording and establish contact with the alien, you will need to figure out how to actually communicate with it. Here are some things to keep in mind.

fig 5

fig5

Mimic their behaviour at the beginning of their encounter. Remember that all of our body language is foreign to them and a clear indication of trying to interpret their signals is by mimicking them. For example, if the alien flashes a light three time, respond by flashing your own light three times. However, you should only be doing this for the beginning of the interaction, and after you should be attempting to interpret their signals to show that you are capable of comprehension.

If you can’t communicate through visuals, use the clay in the kit. If the alien does not ‘see’ it’s environment in the traditional sense, the alien will always have some way or perceiving three-dimensional objects around it. 18

fig 6

fig 6

Establish how the alien senses their surroundings. See if it responds to waving, shining lights or different colours, to establish whether it can see in the same visual spectrum as us. Check if the alien will respond to sound by speaking or clapping. The sooner you can establish what, if any, senses we share with them, the sooner you can begin communicating with them. When you move around it, keep a close eye for any appendages that seem to track your movement. This appendage will likely be their means of sensing their environment.

19

fig 7

fig 7

Do not use any earth–centric cultural references–they will not understand. This includes anything from Plato, to our ecosystem and chemistry. Even our concept of time is relative to our solar system.

Use the laser pointer to point to far away objects. If the alien cannot see it, use the collapsible prod. If the alien cannot see the laser, it will be able to sense the clay.

20

fig 8

fig 8

Establish a “I don’t understand” , “yes” and “no” gestures or symbols early on and do not change it at all. Since they will not understand our verbal or body language, by slightly changing the intonation, volume, or phrase could be interpreted as a totally new word. Ensure that your gestures are both audible and visually obvious so they won’t miss them.

Make sure all of your drawings have high contrast. It is almost guaranteed that they will not see colour as we do.

21

fig 9

fig 9

Don’t assume that they will have human emotions or sentiments.

If they do not possess some kind of universal translator or do not speak verbally, logic such as math will be truly universal.

22

fig 10

fig 10

They probably won’t believe in ‘your’ god. Regardless of your own religious beliefs, understand that they will not share those beliefs and come from a completely different solar system than we do. If humans can not even come to a concensus on religion, they certainly will not.

Symbols that we usually label ‘universal’ are not. These include things such as using arrows to point, genders bathroom signs, poison symbols, check marks and X’s.

23

MATHEMATICS If the aliens do not know anything about us, we will likely have to prove our we are more intelligent than the other organisms on the planet. They will likely attempt to pose a test to us to see if we can comprehend simple arithmetic or geometry or logic beyond simply mimicking. They might establish a binary system (true, false) that will give you a basis to respond to their next queries. This can range from a simple ‘solve for x’ type equation to drawing perfect shapes.

Operators (the symbols used to indicate operations such as addition and subtraction) are subjective, do not assume the alien will understand them.

Operators must be defined using true and false statements inorder to use artithmetic.

OUR SOLAR SYSTEM As important as it that to establish that we are intelligent, we must also prove that we are curious beyond our planet and about our place in the universe. The reason for this is to entice them to divulge similar information about their own solar system. Here is an example diagram of the solar system. Keep in mind that we based our understanding of the solar system on what we designated as planets. In reality, there is a large variety of celestial bodies and asteroid belts in our solar system.

ALIEN BIOLOGY 101 Hollywood, comic books, and literature have filled our minds with assumptions of how aliens will behave and look. Before you assume what the alien will look like, keep these points in mind. fig 11

fig 11

The thing you see before you may not be their actual body. It is very likely that they would not be able to expose themselves to our atmosphere and might be using some kind of protective suit, avatar or surrogate, or it might even be a highly advanced automated probe.

fig 12

Aliens could come in any shape, form or size. Do not expect the alien to look like the depictions of aliens in science fiction. It is near impossible to accurately depict what life on another planet would look like.

Just because it isn’t moving doesn’t mean its dead. Keep in mind that plants on earth don’t move fast enough to see but are still very much alive.

29

fig 13

fig 13

Natural selection and evolution is likely to be a constant throughout the galaxy. Thus all aliens would have a concept of evolution. However this does not mean that earthling methods of reproduction (such as sexual reproduction) is prevalent among their species.

They may not be able to breathe our air. Do not attempt to interact with any assumed breathing apparatus they may have. Also, be cautious if entering any contained atmospheres they may lead you to.

30

fig 14

fig 14

Don’t automatically assume that the life form needs to be carbon-based. There has already been evidence of arsenic based life on Earth. Why should life on another planet be carbon-based?

They may have no immunity to our microbes and we may not be immune to theirs. Do not exchange bodily fluids and avoid all direct bodily contact.

To physically point to something on the alien, use the extendable prod. This will allow you to avoid any physical contact with the alien. 31

fig 15

fig 15

Just because it looks like a head does not mean it is one. You should not automatically try to assume the roles or functions of their body parts. They will have biology that is completely different than anything we have on Earth. So Just because it looks like an eye, does not mean it is one.

32

fig 16

fig 16

Try not be startled by the alien’s appearance. It could be as afraid of you as you are of it.

If it seems to have trouble moving it probably has trouble adjusting to our gravity.

GOOD LUCK.
