The path forward

Philosophy of A Shoe Sales Man: The Path Forward By: Adrian Edge I've found it to be a fair bit of solace to appreciate the road behind me. I have come to understand that the moment I am running, is towards something unknown. And that the horizon, despite it's unparallelled grandeur, will always be something just out of reach. This concept is both an infinitely sad and joyous. This means that when I am running, I will always have somewhere else to run to. But that means when I wish to run no more, there will only be the choice to continue. Time is like that. Perhaps that is why I am always happiest when I am running. I don't feel like to stop is a choice. Even when I am dragging my feet, I am still unwillingly moving forward. It was Martin Heidegger(German Philosopher) that stated we do not exist outside of time, that instead we are time. I think what he meant by that is instead of believing that time was some separate entity, that humans have some sort of access to, time is rather a piece of who we are. Time is created by us and is creating us as well. To me, this creates a strange and common problem. As the past becomes more plentiful through experience and grows into something truly beautiful and terrible, we can often find ourselves staring back; Attempting to relive those moments that brought us both positive and negative consequences. We can find ourselves stuck in the moment of something with the refusal to look forward for the fear of what lies ahead. We can focus so much on the future, that we lose touch of what we have right now. It seems to me, like all of life, it is a matter of balance. To enjoy my running while it happens, to remind myself to occasionally glance back to what was, and to spend the time to enjoy the thought of what might be. Because regardless, I am still moving forward.
