Asian Label Association
Welcome 9th Asian Print Awards 2011 - The only regional awards of its kind in Asia The annual Asian Print Awards was founded to recognise outstanding achievement in the print and packaging industries across Asia. With more than half the world’s population represented in this fast growing area, communication in the form of printed matter links Asia’s diverse cultures. It is imperative that such print achievements do not go unrecognised, especially among the population base that Asia enjoys. The Awards are judged on a wholly quality-oriented set of criteria to ensure that fair play is enacted at all times. The Independent Judging Panel comprises highly qualified personnel from within Asia and around the world. The independent judging panel has no knowledge of the actual entrants details. ALL ENTRIES ARE NUMBER-CODED. Entries must be commercially produced work. The Asian Print Awards is the only regional print quality competition of its kind in Asia. Supported by leading industry-supply companies, any progressive quality print house should enter and prove that they are the best - by winning the Gold, Silver or Bronze award. Proving pride in quality awareness is what customers love to see. It’s not just empty words, you can prove it. Entries submission close on 5th October 2011 at 5pm.

How this company has won the market, and continues to grow Started in 1998 in Hong Kong with seven staff, the company was essentially involved only in IT. Today they have two offices – one in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and 50 staff. They specialise in specialty applications printing and design, focusing in short-runs; specifically light boxes, print-on-demand stickers and point-of-purchase items. How one small company has won the market, and continues to grow. We talk to Harry Chan Manager and Ken Chan, production manager from Topcheer Advertising. PPPA: Is the industry competitive? Harry Chan: Certainly. We are the closest to the customers (end-users) and we participate in the brainstorming for concepts. We work 24 hours, and we have a specific team just for
installation. We serve the retailers, telecommunication and banking companies, but this portfolio is rapidly growing as the industry fully understands the technonlogy we use, to be honest its endless what we can do says

Management/General PPPA: Do you see Top Cheer Advertising expanding? Harry Chan: Yes. The market is expanding as well. A small percentage of our clientele are from overseas. We have focused mainly in Hong Kong and China, but interest is coming from all over the region, and when we sit with our customers they really get a bigger understanding of our quality and specialty area’s we work in. PPPA: Last year, you won an award in APAM 2010. Was it important for you? Has it brought any more business for your company? Ken Chan: Winning an award at Asian Print Awards in 2010 gave our customers more assurance of our calibre. We have seen an increase in clientele as well, it showed our staff that all the effort in production and quality control really does make a difference. We will try again this year to win another award, as the benefits are much more than a nice trophy, it helps our companies bottom-line.

PPPA: What do you look for when you are purchasing equipment? Harry Chan: Digital is always evolving and we need to keep up with this, to cater to our customers needs. Both customers and technology evolution drive us to invest in newer and more technology within equipment that can speed production, make it more streamlined and improve quality. Many of our customers are not aware of how technology would have a hand in both their business and ours. In our interaction with them, we take the opportunity to educate them, enabling them to make informed decisions. The most important point is to provide solutions and application using the latest technology that is on the market for our customers. We believe in investing in latest technology for our
Ken Chan and Harry Chan Topcheer Advertising with ivan Khoo Sales and Marketing Manager Durst Asia and Calvin Tan Applications Specialist Durst Asia customers. On the other hand, we have a handful of customers who are aware of the developments so it’s also great to work with these savvy companies. PPPA: Why would a customer come to Top Cheer? Harry Chan: We are a one-stop
service centre – design, print, finishing and installation arms, which is fairly uncommon in Hong Kong. We serve retailers and are able to provide the marketing collaterals that retailers need, both indoors and outdoors. We also work hand in hand with traditional offset printers where a job needs more than what we do, this also takes away

Management/General 13 the stress from our customers as they don't want to deal with other vendors, we see this as an area of growth for us as well. PPPA: What were the toughest jobs you had to date? Ken Chan: It’s for the jackpot machines – many processes were involved. Prior to UV printing, it was all done via silkscreen. Today, it’s a mix of silkscreen, UV, security printing, and others. It's a challenge but we have mastered this type of work, when you see the finished product you think, "Wow! This is something really special, and that makes everyone happy." PPPA: You have HP, Mutoh, Roland and Durst. Why Durst? Harry Chan: We first had Lambda in 1998 in our Hong Kong office Quarry Bay, followed by Durst’s RHO Pictor 600 1.6 UV flatbed printer. Some three years later, we got into more special applications. We approached Durst for assistance as speed and size became needs. That led to the Rho 800 HS, as our volume was also increasing. The service, and especially the installation from Durst was near perfect. You may not be aware that in Hong Kong space is always an issue, and when we looked at getting the Durst Rho 800 HS into our plant that sort of presented another problem. But with their technicians we managed to achieve the near impossible, and today the Rho 800 is the pride and joy of our operation.
As the customer base expands, we will also have to expand, and are looking at digital print in the normal sense, and also looking at increasing our capacity in China as well. The future for this company in Hong
Kong is not only looking bright, but it will drive the industry to even greater heights with the work they produce. One thing for sure, next time you see a POD or billboard or bus stop image, chances are it’s from Topcheer HK, ahead by miles! •

Up close with Ian Scott, MD of GMG Worldwide GMG has a new managing director at the helm. We spent a few moments asking him what direction he will drive the comapny into as he looks forward. How long have you been in the graphic arts industry? Ian Scott: I’ve spent most of my working life in the Graphic Arts industry — I’m the son of a printer: I have red ink flowing through my veins! I did work as a dive instructor for a while in the South of France, but now I look ridiculous in a wetsuit. What to you think has been the key to GMG's success? What are its strengths? Ian Scott: Well for me, GMG has always adapted very well to market needs. It’s always had a very strong commitment to developing the very best, market-leading technology. At the end of the day it’s the people that ultimately form your core strength, and the employees at GMG are without doubt some of the cream of the business — both in R&D and sales. It’s very rewarding working in a ‘no compromise’ company. What advantages are there for GMG to have promoted an MD from within rather than bringing in from the outside? Ian Scott: Well maybe that’s a question for Robert [Weihing, GMG Owner]! I guess I’ll hit the ground running, as it were, as I know the company inside out. I know Robert and Joerg well [GMG Owners] and that we all work together well. Personally, I’d like to think I was the best man for the job in or outside of the company! You've been a part of GMG for 8 years. How has the company evolved in that time? Ian Scott: GMG has become a stronger brand in the years I’ve known it. It’s done this I think by consistently pro-
lem solver with customers and build loyalty. At the end of the day, our customers can be a huge sales force for us — talking about our software and recommending it to others. Ultimately, it’s what we should be heading for.
ducing the best technology in the industry and by listening closely to the customer’s issues. We’ve certainly developed closer relationships with the major industry hardware producers and this has seen our presence increase. Adapting our core software to the needs of specialist sectors such as LFP and digital has also been a big development. How is the graphic arts industry changing in your view? Ian Scott: Obviously, it’s becoming leaner, faster and ever-more reliant on technology. The industry is hiring less experienced colour management experts — primarily to cut operating costs — and instead relying more and more on technology. This is all good news for us! What's your personal business philosophy? Ian Scott: I’m not sure I have one! I’ve never been known for being a philosophical thinker! I believe in hard work and surrounding yourself with the best people. I’ve always tried to be a prob-
What challenges are facing the company in the coming years? Ian Scott: Like all business, the economic downturn has hit our customers greatly. GMG software though has been seen as a way of streamlining processes and cutting costs through lack of wastage and less time spent in prepress with less mistakes. So I see the greatest challenge as maintaining our products as a must-have in a market where greater efficiencies are desired. What aspects of the business will you be looking to build on? Ian Scott GMG is in very good shape at the moment, so I see my job as building on and maintaining the company’s existing strategy for future growth. This includes becoming an invaluable tool to the digital print sector and LFP sector, and maximising our business and technology partnerships. You’re not going to see any radical changes to GMG in the next few years, just lots of small improvements. What innovations can we expect to see from GMG in the next few years? Ian Scott Of course, most of our R&D has to remain confidential, but what I can say is the marketplace needs ROI and quality; all our new products ideas are focused around these two vital requirements. •

Significantly enhanced functions for the Prinect print shop workflow • New MIS from acquisition of software manufacturer CERM launched as Prinect Business Manager • Enhancements in growth segments MIS, web-to-print, and digital and packaging printing
Four areas in particular have been driving business in the print media industry in recent times – management information systems (MIS), web-to-print solutions, and digital and packaging printing. These developments have prompted Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) to extend the functions of its Prinect print shop workflow in these areas in particular.
For the further development of the Prinect print shop workflow, Heidelberg is focusing on four growth segments in the print media industry – MIS solutions and web-to-print as well as digital and packaging printing.
In future, Prinect will be the only workflow solution in the industry to offer a fully integrated MIS (management information system). This system is based on the MIS technology developed by software manufacturer CERM, which Heidelberg acquired at the start of the year. The solution is gradually being introduced worldwide under the name Prinect Business Manager. The Business Manager has a broad application spectrum and a modular design, which makes it ideal for various sizes of print shop. Full workflow integration of management processes with the Prinect Business Manager The now introduced integration of Prinect Business Manager into the Prinect production workflow based on JDF/ JMF is a technology market leading development that ensures intensive process automation, improves transparency considerably, and simplifies data handling. This helps print shops significantly improve their competitive edge in a tough market environment. In the next development stages, which are already under way, the Prinect Business Manager from Heidelberg will provide a dedicated solution that accesses the same database as the produc-

To ensure your printshop is perfectly equipped for the market, all processes need to be transparent and easy to follow. That’s why Heidelberg developed Prinect – integrating, controlling, and accelerating your entire production process, and ensuring you a smooth workflow that offers you maximum quality and flexibility.

tion workflow. As a result, job planning and production data will be available in the same system as, for example, job processing and materials management data. This will give rise to a print shop workflow with an unprecedented level of integration that covers all areas of a print media company and thus offers the highest level of process automation available in the print media industry to date. “Thanks to the integration of MIS and the production workflow, Prinect will deliver even greater transparency and automation in future. This means, for example, that changes made to jobs at short notice will be implemented automatically in Prinect in terms of both machine selection and materials management,” explains Christopher Berti, Head of Prinect and CtP at Heidelberg. “We are driving forward the merger of two system environments that have thus far remained separate in many areas despite JDF integration.” Support will still be provided for the Prinect Prinance MIS solution previously offered by Heidelberg. Connection of third-party MIS to Prinect and partner programs will continue. Web-to-print business models still offer excellent potential for the industry The market potential of web-to-print solutions (W2P) continues to rise – both for print shops and industry suppliers. In future, the extended Prinect functions for W2P will offer Heidelberg customers the opportunity to move into this market segment with a highly automated solution. Upcoming Prinect versions will offer a webshop interface
and a W2P workflow, enabling users to automate processes such as creating mixed forms or selecting the most suitable production technology. The W2P functions also have direct access to the central Prinect database and thus the MIS and production workflow. In this way, print buyers can place orders or issue print approvals online via customized W2P portals. All the relevant information is automatically available to the job management and bookkeeping departments as well as prepress, press, and postpress. The Partner Program from Heidelberg for connecting W2P solutions from RedTie, EFI Digital Storefront, PageFlex, BrandMaker, Neo7even, and MSVisucom will remain in place. Digital printing: Full workflow integration is key to improving efficiency The Prinect Digital Print Manager, which is used to connect digital presses of various manufacturers, is being expanded and enhanced with new functions in cooperation with Ricoh. In future, a single workflow for digital and offset printing will make it possible to automate the processes of creating and costing a job, selecting the most suitable production technology or hybrid production, and performing inline finishing in an imposition layout. To achieve this, for instance, color management will be optimized in the workflow so that a particular color in the digital print will match the corresponding color in offset as closely as possible. What's more, it will still be possible to connect digital presses from HP, Canon, Xerox, and Kodak via the Prinect Digital Print Manager.
Integration solutions for packaging printing Due to the highly industrialized nature of folding carton and label production, the complete integration of all print shop operations is even more important for these applications than for commercial printing. Here, too, Prinect offers comprehensive functions for cost-effective production and sustainable data management. First and foremost, Prinect focuses on optimizing makeready times for presses and for die cutters and gluers in postpress with the aim of cutting production costs. Material savings, reliability in production, and optimum repeatability are further factors that play a key role in the further development of the workflow for the packaging sector. In this way, the Prinect Package Designer – the highly productive CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/ Computer Aided Manufacturing) software that integrates the structural design in Prinect – will provide graphic designers with contours, 3D images, and dimensions via a special Illustrator plug-in. This enables them to use Adobe Illustrator to create the graphic design directly using the contour data and to run the 3D check straight away. Sheet assembly functions are also being constantly expanded to meet customer demands in this area. Furthermore, production managers particularly appreciate the clearly structured and precise production information that is used to approve and reliably execute the planning, costing, and workflow optimization processes. •

BS Print achieves Heidelberg’s ISO 12647-2 certification It’s also the first printer in Malaysia to obtain Heidelberg’s ISO 12647-2 International Standard Certification. N Saha, managing director of Malaysia-based BS Print, shares with Christel Lee his thoughts on attaining this milestone. N Saha, managing director of Malaysiabased BS Print, with Bent Serritslev managing director of Heidelberg Malaysia tion process, there were many things involved. We had to print a particular set of forms adhering to the designated colour and density. Preparation was the toughest in the whole process.
PPPA: Congratulations on your ISO 12647-2 certification! What is the biggest benefit for you and your customers? N Saha: It guarantees that BS Print has full control of the processes in the plant and its perimeters – prepress, printing, colour management and consistency. It also allows us to standardise our processes. PPPA: There are printers who feel that they don’t need the certification and can still deliver quality. What is your comment to that? N Saha: There are customers overseas who are particular about quality. Having this certification gives distant customers the added assurance on quality. Prior to this, we have had customers who requested our print samples and the sending, reverting back and forth has taken a lot of time. Certainly, there have been numerous skeptics! ISO certification may appear to many as a marketing tool, or an in-
strument to charge more for the work. To us, however, it’s evidence of our pride in producing quality. The certification has given us tremendous overseas exposure, and we have an edge in Malaysia. However, I would like to emphasise that our certification was not due our customers’ request for it! PPPA: Do you have any particular customers who are sticky about such certification? N Saha: We have customers whose first question was “Are you Fogra certified?”, next was “Are you ISO certified?” Local companies are not very particular in comparison to those from overseas. PPPA: How long did you take to do the assessment? N Saha: We took two to three months. It involved very lengthy operations – preparation and printing. The preparation alone took some three weeks. During the audit, we were also required to do a lot of explaining on the produc-
PPPA: You are a firm believer in quality equipment, we recall BS Print made a bold investment in 2010. Between November 2010 and February 2011, a brand new CD 1024, a CtP system and a reconditioned SM 74-4 joined the stable. Which part of the whole process in the certification was the most intensive? N Saha: The press! I recall we had to print 4000 sheets, and every 400th sheet was taken out, placed side-by-side for assessment – registration, colour density and the like! I personally oversaw the process, including the quality check. PPPA: What is your next step for the business? N Saha: We are placing more attention on the overseas market now – particularly Europe, UK and Australia, since we have noticed an increase in interest from overseas clients. We are currently in the midst of negotiating. About Heidelberg’s ISO 12647-2 certification Heidelberg’s ISO 12647-2 certification is an evidence of customers’ commitment to quality. Issued by Heidelberg, it applies to print and proof processes for sheetfed offset printing. Print operators are also trained at the end of the process to ensure capability of maintaining the standard on an ongoing basis.

Biggest sheetfed offset press in the Asia-Pacific region On 12 October last year the biggest sheetfed offset press in the Asia-Pacific region launched into action up bang on schedule Linocraft Printers in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, following an installation and commissioning period of just five weeks. The highly automated Rapida 185 sixcolour coater press for a sheet size of 130 x 185 cm (51.18 x 72.83in) is the company’s second KBA press and joins a five-colour Rapida 105 with coater which was delivered in 2006. The imposing installation underscores KBA pole position in large format, both in Asia and the rest of the world. The big press has catapulted Linocraft Printers to an even higher print level of print technology in South East Asia. Not only has it cut production and delivery times for existing customers, it has also attracted new accounts. Partnership with outstanding prospects Linocraft Printers was established in 1972 and has evolved into a fullservice print and packaging provider
on a soaring growth trajectory. It is associated with shareholders of Malaysia’s biggest logistics group, Tiong Nam Logistics Holdings Berhad. While Linocraft’s production halls house a number of small-, medium- and largeformat presses from other vendors, the Rapida 185 is undoubtedly the flagship, and has enabled the company to expand its already strong position in the highvolume and VLF packaging sectors. Linocraft managing director and CEO Andrew Tan Woon Chay says: “The Rapida 185 is a logical consequence of our company development and an expression of our satisfaction with KBA. We were looking for attractive, cost-effective technology that would address our packaging production demands one hundred per cent.
KBA’s specialists provided invaluable support. Originally we had planned to install a Rapida 205, which has an even bigger format of 150 x 205 cm. But in the end the Rapida 185 proved to be more appropriate for our needs. It, too, has enormous growth potential and a number of unique features that distinguish us from our competitors.” Packaging for top brands Linocraft started out as a printer of books and commercials. In 2000 it expanded into packaging printing,

of sheet, we can print everything in one pass.” Total quality monitoring Quality monitoring is also very much better with the KBA Rapida 185. Andrew Tan Woon Chay explains: “During the selection procedure one of our top priorities was to raise the bar in quality monitoring. That is why the Rapida 185 is equipped with DensiTronic Professional density measurement and control. We are planning to add QualiTronic Professional inline colour measurement and control so as to further enhance our efficiency in quality control and documentation when the investment is appropriate.” The big Rapida now runs in two shifts, six days a week. “We have transferred a lot of jobs from another large-format press to the Rapida 185 because it is better, faster and more efficient. We print six to seven jobs per day, with an average run length of 30,000 units. Our new Rapida 185 has fulfilled all our high expectations in terms of colour stability, product quality, makeready times and production speed.” • and this has since become its primary business. As Andrew Tan Woon Chay explains: “A few years ago the ratio of commercial to packaging was 80:20, now it is 20:80. Packaging printing has become our biggest product line, and with the high-performance KBA presses we have achieved global standards.” Linocraft’s reference list features international brands such as Dyson, Hewlett-Packard, Motorola, Panasonic, Loreal, Fedex and Sony. Packaging for the food and beverage industries is another growth market, and here Linocraft supplies top names such as Coca Cola, MeadWestvaco and Tiger Beer. The Rapida 185 can print high-volume packaging for electrical goods much faster and more cost-effectively than
smaller presses. Says Andrew Tan Woon Chay: “Prior to installing the new KBA we printed large items of packaging in multiple parts and then had to glue the lid and base onto the main body: now, with the 185’s 2.4 square metres

The most important local exhibition in Jakarta After a long absence Heidelberg Indonesia participated in a local show again. FGD Expo 2011 was a well visited 4 days show with sheedfed equipment displayed from various manufacturers. In total of 36,917 visitors were registered during the show period. The Expo focused on the design, publishing & packaging industry in Indonesia. At the show professionals from the printing, packaging and promotional industries, including entrepreneurs, suppliers, regulating agencies, business players, and other individuals, gathered under one roof to meet, communicate, network, share information and experiences, and develop business relations. Heidelberg Indonesia was the only German manufacturer exhibiting equipment, including Prepress, Press and Postpress, focusing on Short Run Printing with an impressive line-up of a Speedmaster SM 52-4 colour press,
Stahl KHC 78 folder and a Polar 115 XC Plus cutter. Furthermore, the new Prinect S pre press production workflow was launched and Platewriter 75 i-CtP was on display. Heidelberg’s booth was one of the most impressive of the show. The focus for Heidelberg was to showcase the performance of the SM 52-4 press, equipped with the Press Center Compact, Autoplate and the 15,000 sph speed package. This combination is capable of job changes of less than 10 minutes and thus is a highly productive machine for short run multi colour jobs. Furthermore, stressing the ecological benefits of
Heidelberg technology under the HEIECO approach, the press was equipped with the FilterStar dampening solution filtration system, which extends the lifetime of the dampening solution for up to 6 months. The Stahlfolder KHC 78-4KLL-FHC was displayed and used to produce a “Christmas tree” fold, in order to stress the versatility of this Stahlfolder, in addition to the usual 16 and 32 page signature folds. Optional gate fold equipment and glue attachments are available as well. A lot of interest was also shown in the new Polar 115XC Plus cutter with the new big touch screen display. Easy programming, accurate cutting, safety and high reliability make Polar cutters to the synonym for quality cutting machines. Heidelberg staff gave 6 presentations and live demos every day which were very well attended and resulted in several equipment orders being concluded during the expo. “As the general economy and therefore print in Indonesia is on the rise, Heidelberg chose to exhibit at the FGD show to our commitment to the industry and demonstrate the latest available technology for printers”, explained Peter Janusik Managing Director of Heidelberg Indonesia “The saying seeing is believing is what we wanted to highlight when demonstrating the Heidelberg and Polar products made in Qingpu, China – highlighting their exceptional build quality and performance”. He added. “Many customers appreciated our booth concept and design, commenting on the consistent appearance of the Heidelberg image, no matter where they are in the world, and confirming that the quality coming from our factory in China is second to none. Peter Janusik concluded “With a number of new equipment orders placed, going to the FGD show was certainly the right decision for Heidelberg Indonesia”.

High Volume: one recipe for success in commercial printing Developments in commercial web offset printing in recent years started with 32-page presslines, moving through 64 and 80 pages, right up to a 96-page printing system.
Through ongoing product evolution resulting in ever higher productivity with the same printing quality, commercial web offset printing grew its market share. Why are high volume web presses and especially the new 96page generation a logical consequence of this development? A look at the print and advertising market Printed advertising is growing again, supported by the positive influences of cross media. Things looked different in 2009 when the financial
and economic crisis caused the print volume in Europe to decline by around 15 percent, and investments in commercial web offset presses to fall to approximately one third of the average annual value before the crisis. On top of the downturn in the economy, there were additional structural influences caused by advertising spending shifting away from print and towards online media. Nevertheless, in the course of the economic recovery in Europe, advertising spending for print media has grown since the first quarter of 2010, in some cases even by double
digit percentages. Also in 2010, paper consumption in Europe for the heatset web offset segment rose by almost seven percent compared with the previous year. A summary of the development trends of the printing segments mainly produced with high volume systems shows the following scenario: Household advertising in the form of leaflets and flyers that land in the consumer’s letterbox separately or inside other media are still indispensable for trade and industry to stimulate the buying impulse. The central success factors of this advertising form are clever regional distribution, creative product design, and its communication capability. In the field of catalogs for trade and industry, the so-called Big Books are giving way to shorter run catalogs that appear more frequently. Especially the printed version of entertaining magalogs, a cross between a magazine and a catalog, remains the anchor for cross media marketing campaigns. With magazines and periodicals, the title variety trend continues, above all with medium and short runs. Here publishers increasingly rely on the success model of combining lifestyle topics. The dynamic growth of the Corporate Publishing segment continues unabated. Even in the age of digital natives, printed customer magazines to strengthen customer loyalty and generate demand in a cross media communications mix is still a success model. In general, it can be seen that, due to An outlook on industrial-scale commercial web offset printing.

the tendency towards shorter runs and faster turnaround times, publication gravure is losing market share to the competing process of commercial web offset. The challenges are price and capacity Meanwhile one can speak of a new era in the production efficiency of commercial web offset. The production volume is increasingly overlapping with that of gravure. Despite tapping new customer groups, a recovery in advertising spending, and positive development outlooks for innovative forms of printed advertising, commercial web offset printers are facing a number of major challenges. Although even before the crisis year 2009 there was a certain consolidation of capacity in both gravure and web offset in Europe, often through shutting down old written-off presses with comparatively low productivity, the massive pressure on selling prices for printed products and in turn on the profitability situation of the industry continues. Therefore reducing costs is the central requirement of all companies involved in the value-adding chain. This also gradually leads to a market shakeout, i.e. further shutting down of uneconomical production capacity. In the future this development will intensify because, over the medium or long term, total print volume will tend to stagnate, at least in Europe.
The market calls for innovations Precisely on account of these continuingly difficult market conditions, commercial web offset needs innovations that bring more cost reduction potential than merely a few percentage points. Groundbreaking
concepts are called for that lift production efficiency to a sustainable new level. One such technological development is a concept demanded by the market – the 96-page LITHOMAN S. The development of a 96-page heatset rotary press with a web width of 2,860 millimeters is thus a logical technology advancement that follows the trend for increasing productivity in web offset through wider webs that has meanwhile been taking place for around 15 years. Altogether more than 350 long-grain and shortgrain LITHOMAN presses are in production worldwide, and around 50 of these have a web width of over two meters. The market success of these so-called UWWO (Ultra Wide Web Offset) printing systems started in 2005 with installations of the first 2,060 millimeters wide 80-page presses in Germany, Italy and Spain. These UWWO presses with web widths of 2,060 millimeters up to 2,860 millimeters produce a gross output of between 3.6 and 4.3 million pages per hour. Through this development in productivity, web offset is increasingly entering the domain of publication gravure.
Print Pack Publish Asia • 8/2011
Sheetfed Offset 37 CtP prepress technology for web offset has considerable advantages regarding costs and throughput time compared with printing cylinder engraving and cylinder handling for the gravure process. Here the costs per square meter of an imaged print form for offset are only around 15 to 25 percent of the costs that gravure incurs. The makeready time savings from approval of the print data up to the start of the production run are in a similar ratio. Web offset printers utilize these advantages for inexpensive and fast production of split runs such as imprinting dealer addresses or regionally differentiated price information in leaflets and flyers. Another influence on the technological development of web offset compared with publication gravure that should not be underestimated is the intense competition between suppliers of press, prepress, and platemaking equipment. In past years the manufacturers’ high level of R&D funding aimed at gaining competitive advantages in the offset segment has, besides the increases in productivity and quality already mentioned, reduced the manufacturing costs of printed products. The economic efficiency of 96-page printing systems The jump to 96 pages and a 2,860 millimeters web width is a logical progression based on LITHOMAN technology that has proven itself in more than 350 installations. Against the backdrop of the market situation described above, the marketability of a 96-page long-grain (4 x 12) press concept was intensively discussed shortly before development started. Here the aspect of high level of economic efficiency through full-width web operation was of central significance. The divisibility of a 96-page sheet through 8, 16, 24, 32 and 48 pages together with one or two combination folders or former folders results in very high production flexibility. The complete working width of the press can be used for a wide variety of jobs, which ensures a high level of economic efficiency. Based on the experience gained from some 50 LITHOMAN installations with web widths of 2,060 millimeters and 2,250 millimeters, manroland commenced the further development to a 96-page press about the time
of drupa 2008. As the development work started, it was evident that this new dimension in commercial web offset would require more than ever a comprehensive system approach because established limits in many areas were exceeded. This applied to the availability of paper grades used in heatset web offset as well as adequately dimensioned printing plates and platesetters, and also handling of paper reels weighing up to seven tonnes, or plates with a surface area of more than three square meters. In 2008, eleven leading suppliers from the PrintCity Alliance got together to clarify these questions and many more. The findings from this project work were published at the time of IPEX 2010 in a special report entitled Ultra Wide Web Offset. Design modifications for the new LITHOMAN S printing unit compared with the proven 80-page press (2,250 millimeters web width) covered among other things redimensioning of the rollers and the use of new materials such as compound materials to reduce mass and ensure the necessary rigidity. In addition, the wider web width makes it necessary to use gapless blanket cylinders (sleeve technology). The recipe for success of the high volume presses was maximum output through web width and printing speed along with a very high level of automation. This combination permits economical production of both long and short runs with high or low pagination. Therefore, the 96-page LITHOMAN has the same high level of automation as the
other manroland high volume presses, including the PPL/APL automated plate changing system for the shortest changeover times. A new, fullyintegrated regulation system is used to control the inherent fanout effect of the 2,860 millimeters web width. The press circumferential format of 1,228 millimeters provides optimal DIN A4 production in combination with pintype folders. A pioneering spirit safeguards the future With the structures of the advertising and media landscape changing, the print market has to reposition itself. Printing companies must respond to the stronger market segmentation with improved business and production processes. This development necessitates a pioneering spirit, which the high volume printing system complies with, and enables publishers to reach their goals: they want to be profitable and this entails retaining advertising customers and readers and generating additional business. An important factor here is low production costs in the inserts, magazines and catalogs segments, which extremely productive high volume commercial web systems ensure. In recent years, these cost reductions have enabled printed products to defend their position as an attractive and efficient communication medium for advertisers, publishers, and industry in general.•

Keen to be green How environment-compatible is your production? Printing companies are increasingly judged by this. Consumable materials from printcom are especially environmentcompatible and contribute to sustainable production. Above all, specific washing agents and fountain solution help to avoid pollutants and waste or save energy. Here a decisive factor for printcom products is also their environment friendliness that is certified by a national environmental seal of approval or international environment standards. An alcohol-free, please Measured by volume, isopropanol (IPA) is the most significant air pollutant in many printing companies. According to the application, printcom offers specially developed fountain solution additives for alcohol-reduced or alcohol-free printing. printcom fountain solutions are used all over the world, meeting the requirements of different water qualities, as well as special conditions for foodstuff packaging or in critical microbiological environments. However, alcoholreduced or alcohol-free fountain
solution concentrates alone are not enough. Because these agents tend to contaminate faster, the demand for a circulation system that keeps the fountain solution clean for as long as possible is growing. This requires special, easy to install filtration devices that not only delay contamination but also permit longer intervals between changing the fountain solution and reduce the amount that needs to be disposed of. Besides that, the filtration devices work with returnable filter cartridges so no waste is generated through used filters. Less is often more printcom is currently developing fountain solution additives that show a considerably reduced buildup of paper particles and ink residue on the blankets and so they need to be washed less often. Besides higher productivity, there is less used washing agent and wash-
up paper waste to be disposed of. In most cases, the benefits are greater for webfed presses than sheetfed presses. In an ideal case, wash-ups are reduced by half. The potential savings are not only to be found in longer intervals between wash-ups but also in the time needed for this task. The dosage of solvent additives in the washing agent influences the amount of wash-up fluid mixture that must be disposed of after each cleaning. In principle, washing agents with high-performance additives can be used much more sparingly for removing oil, grease, and dirt than low-dose solvents. This is In addition to printcom consumable materials, manroland offers a host of environment-compatible solutions for webfed and sheetfed printing systems, right up to technologies for energy and heat recovery or for reduced paper waste and energy waste through friction. All of these modules contribute to sustained green production.

because high additive washing agents combine spontaneously and stably with water and dissolve printing ink more easily, and the amount of washing agent needed can be reduced by 50 percent or more. Besides the obligatory approval for compatibility with the press and industrial safety regulations, tested washing agents such as those offered by printcom also exactly provide the specified cleaning performance. A similar scenario with coating When the job structure necessitates frequent ink changes, the printing units must be washed-up more often. For pre-cleaning the rollers, printers as a rule use paste that then needs to be removed by a roller washing agent. This procedure doubles washing agent consumption. Part of the residual fluid is waste, but part of it vaporizes to form Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that pollute the working environment. The situation is similar when coatings are used. Volatile isopropanol or water-alcohol mixtures are often used to clean coating circuits, coating plates, and anilox rollers. Besides the safety hazard that comes from the low flashpoint of these materials, the user is exposed to strong fumes. With both inks and coatings, water-based washing agents together with a retrofit provide a suitable alternative. An additional supply circuit in the roller train and a coating cylinder washing device not only speeds up the wash-up process. Because it is automated, washing-up the printing units and coating cylinder is definitely much more user-friendly. •

Sustainable standard It can be hard for individual printers to develop a measurable environmental policy but the forthcoming ISO 16759 should address this.
For a growing number of printers, sustainability and working to protect the environment are becoming more important. This is not just because many printing company owners believe in helping the industry to be more environmentally friendly, but also because their customers are putting them under increased pressure to do so. Print buyers want to know that their media investments can make some contribution to their own corporate sustainability message. This matters more and more to their employees, to their shareholders and of course to consumers.
dividual products and it is not specific to the printing industry. What Printers Want Printing company owners need help to adopt new ways of doing business and this is what international standards should provide. When it comes to sustainability, printers and their customers want a formal framework against which print media products can be measured and the results certified. Printers want to be able to confirm to their customers that the carbon footprint for the print they produce complies with an
international standard. And print buyers want the assurance that a printer’s calculations are transparent, clear and comparable across sectors and geographies. They want fact-based assurance that print media are indeed sustainable. So far, no such standard or universal tool for data collection has existed. Sustainability messaging and environmental impact improvements have come down to the initiatives of printing industry associations willing to invest in the development of their members’ knowledge and in carbon calculators.
The problem is that running your business in an environmentally friendly way is not as simple as it sounds. Nor is it easy to explain to customers how sustainability initiatives at your company translate into a positive message for your customers’ stakeholders. Unlike other areas of the graphic arts, there are as yet no international standards to guide printers through the specifics of carbon impact reduction. Many printers are compliant with ISO 14001, but this is a management standard designed to help the business in general to reduce its environmental impact. ISO 14001 does not provide the means of measuring the carbon footprint of in-

Industry associations around the world are working hard to improve print’s environmental impact. Their collective goal is to help printing companies reduce the carbon footprints of their businesses and of individual print media products. But without an external target accessible to all printers, it is clearly impossible for print as a whole to position itself in universal terms of sustainability. Without an international standard, the printing industry has no means of capturing, reporting and tracking its constantly improving carbon footprint. This is why ISO 16759 for calculating the carbon footprint of print media is so important. ISO 16759 This international standard is expected to be complete in 2012 and is written for prepress, printers, print service providers, content publishers and other media companies. ISO 16759 provides a framework for carbon calculators, so that tools can be created specific to a given industry sector or geographical region. As long as the tools follow the framework methodology outlined in ISO 16759, the printing industry will have the means to track its international progress in reducing the carbon footprints of different media products, such as newspapers, magazines or books.
ISO 16759 is relevant for all sectors of print and for all geographies, so print buyers worldwide will be able to use ISO 16759-compliant carbon calculators to compare the footprints of different production processes. They will be able to evaluate, for instance, the carbon footprint of a particular print media product printed direct to a digital press, to a digital direct imaging press or to a conventional press. ISO 16759 has the flexibility to reflect the diversity of print media, regardless of production method, workflow, run lengths, media types, inks, coatings and finishing options. Working with ISO 16759 The standard has considerable flexibility in application. Users of ISO 16759 can define the basis on which they are calculating the carbon footprint of the print media product. The scope to write a specific definition of a print media product means that ISO 16759 can meet the needs of a constantly evolving industry, where product categories and types are changing as output and finishing technologies evolve. The print media product under study could be a 240-page perfect bound A4 book, a 16-page A3 newspaper section or a B2 sheet full of business cards. Using an inventory of the various production processes used to produce a given piece of print, the user of an ISO 16759-compliant carbon calcula-
tor can then work out the carbon impact for each stage in the workflow. This includes substrates, inks and other consumables used, for instance printing plates, and bindery materials. It can also include transport, laminating and ambient environment factors such as lighting or heat. The goal is to calculate a carbon footprint value for each stage in the inventory. This also provides the basis for comparison of the carbon footprints of different media products. ISO 16759 & ISO 14067 ISO 16759 is an implementation of ISO 14067, which provides a framework methodology for measuring the carbon footprint of products and services. The ISO 14067 standard was not written with any specific industrial sector in mind, and printing is the first industry to develop its own implementation. ISO 16759 is expected to help demonstrate the extensive progress that has been made in the printing and publishing industries over the last 20 years to reduce their environmental impacts. For the most part these efforts have been incidental to the larger effort to reduce cost, improve efficiency and enhance competitiveness, particularly in recent years when print has faced stiff competition from electronic media. Sustainable Print Digital production tools, extensive

Management/General 43 consolidation and efficiency gains in the paper industry, and substantially improved forestry management worldwide, combine to make the printed word the most sustainable media of all. Print is the only media that captures and stores carbon, that can be recycled multiple times, and for which end of life is essentially benign. This all adds up to an extremely positive message for media professionals and producers and, of course, for their customers. And it is extremely good news for the future of print. ISO 16759 provides an international framework within which industry has the flexibility and scope to create sector-specific carbon calculators. ISO 16579 in Action It is hoped that ISO 16759 will encourage media buyers and consumers to think more carefully about how they invest in and use media. ISO 16759 provides the means of quantifying, communicating and reporting the carbon footprint of print media, so it is a means of facilitating the continuous
monitoring of print’s carbon footprint. This will lead to enhanced credibility of the printing industry’s efforts to manage and reduce its carbon footprint and that of the raw materials used. The carbon footprint of various print media products can be benchmarked against similar products so that over time data will be available to assist media buyers in making media investment decisions. This data will also provide factual support for messages of print’s sustainability.
Compliant tools provide print media buyers and consumers with a means of tracking the reduction in GHG emissions for different product types over time. This performance tracking will provide the printing industry with considerable data with which to defend itself against accusations of environmental hostility, particularly when compared with digital media. ISO 16759 can even be used to calculate the carbon footprint of non-print media, but that is another story.

Gallus EM 410 S raises the bar By commissioning a Gallus EM 410 S, Obchodní tiskárni Kolín (OTK), one of the leading packaging and label manufacturers on the Czech market, is boosting productivity and expanding its range of applications many times over. Obchodní tiskárni Kolín (OTK), a print shop based 60 km east of Prague, has always been one of the most important packaging and label manufacturers on the Czech market and remains so to this day. OTK's product portfolio ranges from flexible packaging and forms to graphic and adhesive labels. The company extensively updated its production facilities for self-adhesive labels at the start of June this year, installing a new Gallus EM 410 S nine-colour flexographic press – the only one of its kind in the Czech Republic. A further flexographic press from Gallus has long been in use at OTK and is greatly valued for its reliability. However, after purchasing this Gallus press more than twenty years ago, OTK equipped
its pressroom with other brands of flexographic presses until the management team decided this year to return to tried-and-tested Swiss quality. The new machine is now located next to the older, still fully functional narrowweb Gallus R 250-F press, providing an interesting contrast between the very latest cutting-edge technology in narrow-web printing and a machine that is several generations older. As its name suggests, the new ninecolour Gallus EM 410 S press can handle a maximum printing width of 410 mm, with a maximum motif length of 660 mm. Its high level of modularity and versatility supports a wide range of jobs. Options include combining flexographic printing with
further printing and finishing processes in a single pass. A whole range of substrates, including paper and various film types (PP, PET, PVC and PE), can also be processed by the Gallus EM 410 S. Furthermore, the newly installed press provides a significant productivity boost throughout the labels sector, not least as it can be operated at a proven speed of 150 metres/minute. The letter "S" in the name of the press stands for servo drive technology, which replaces the central shaft, and sleeve technology. Servo drive technology cuts setup times for job changes quite significantly, lowers startup waste and enhances the quality of the final print. The unique seamless sleeve system used on anilox and printing cylinders for rotary presses in the EM and S series plays a considerable role in reducing operating costs. Sleeves are changed from the operator's side in a process that is extremely simple. All these features make the Gallus EM 410 S ideal for cost-effective processing of a wide range of production jobs. While the high production speed enables processing of high-volume jobs, the fast job changes create the necessary scope for producing shorter runs with minimal waste. First installation in the Czech Republic The new Gallus press is unique not just because it's the first of its kind in the Czech Republic but also because its features have been customised to OTK's specific requirements. As well as the nine flexographic printing units, a screen printing unit can be added

at any location, which also extends the options for special-effect and other special inks. Screen printing is currently used, for example, for printing Braille – a legal requirement for labels in the pharmaceutical industry. Naturally the press is also fitted with delamination and relamination mechanisms, which enable printing directly on selfadhesive substrates. An optional turnover fitting also allows double-sided printing. The Gallus EM 410S narrow-web rotary press also has a module for lamination and hot foil embossing, and the end of the production line features a trio of workstations that can be fitted with tools for die cutting, perforating, embossing etc. An unusual option here is notably the installation of embossing tools in the third finishing module. In the future, OTK would also like to retrofit the Gallus EM 410 S with a special embossing system that will enable the embossed motif to be placed in a particular position regardless of the running direction of the printed substrate. However, investing in this type of module depends on the number of jobs requiring this process. Official commissioning of the press The new press was installed at the print shop in May this year and the
official commissioning ceremony took place on 14 June, with OTK's guests including not only its most important customers but also representatives from the supplier company Heidelberg Praha. The event aimed to introduce the customers to the varied processing and production capabilities of the new Gallus EM 410 S, which greatly extends not only capacity but also the range of applications at the print shop thanks, among other things, to its optional functions. Josef Squerzi, head of self-adhesive labels, confirmed that investing in the state-of-the-art Gallus press opens up new opportunities for OTK, particularly in the field of labels for the pharmaceutical industry. The company also aims to use the press extensively for high-quality and technically complex labels and special labels such as in-mould. Franz Schöny, Managing Director of Heidelberg Praha spol. s.r.o., responsible for supplying the new press to OTK, underlined the importance of the collaboration between OTK and Heidelberg in his speech. He also explained that his company is looking to enhance this further through new technologies and service support.•

Even though the new press in itself has already increased OTK's overall production capacity for selfadhesive labels, it has been running in threeshift operation since commissioning. It has already been decided that the new Gallus EM 410 S will not be the only installation in the self-adhesive label line, as it is soon to be augmented with a rewind and cutting system and multifunctional high-performance diecutting unit. "This investment is in line with our strategy to continue developing our self-adhesive labels line," said Petr Ryska, CEO of the OTK Group, commenting on the purchase of the new press. He explained that the Gallus EM 410 S is the first press in OTK's self-adhesive business that no longer works using the older solid cylinder technology but instead harnesses cutting-edge sleeve technology. Ryska added that he sees a considerable increase in the speed and ease of performing setup and changeover work in particular. The company opted for Gallus aluminium sleeves, he said, because they exhibit high mechanical resistance and excellent dimensional stability and therefore ensure high print quality. •

Flexible packaging market with automated register controls One of the Middle East's leading suppliers of flexible packaging, Dubai-based Positive Packaging United, has specified QuadTech's Autotron 2600 with the Clear Logic Register Guidance System for its new Cerutti gravure press, in order to ensure a high-quality, defect- free supplies of material. Positive Packaging United is boosting its capacity with another state-of-theart press in order to meet the growing demand for high-quality flexible packaging in the Middle East.
Mr. Pranesh Kankanwadi, Managing Director of Positive Packaging United, Dubai
"We see the inclusion of automated press controls as vital, in order to assure consistently high quality standards demanded by local consumer goods customers, whose brands depend on distinctive, high-impact packaging to succeed," commented Mr. Pranesh Kankanwadi, Managing Director of Positive Packaging United. Headquartered in Mumbai and part of the Enpee Group, Positive Packaging has become one of the large flexible packaging suppliers, with monthly output of over 4000 tonnes (approximately 8.8 million lb) across manufacturing facilities in India, Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates. The Dubai Factory, Positive Packaging United supplies a host of major global brand owners, such as Henkel, Mars, Nestle and Unilever, as well as many niche brands. QuadTech's AutotronTM 2600 with ClearLogicTM was selected by Positive Packaging United because it provides accurate register control on any gravure press. Specialized, compact solidstate MiniCamTM scanning heads can detect a wide range of pale and lowcontrast marks, such as glues, varnishes, inks and transparent surfaces, without compromise in performance. The size of a 35mm film canister, the MiniCam is small enough to be placed very close to the nips of a press. The Autotron 2600 with ClearLogic
enables the Positive Packaging United team to meet the increasing demand for design complexity, where precise control over trapping, repeat length and pattern consistency are vital. Sophisticated surface finishes, a greater number of colors, reverse printing and finer design detail are standard requirements on printing jobs. ClearLogic, the user interface, features user-friendly screens that require fewer touches, removing much of the complexity potentially involved in the set-up process. The packaging-specific software accompanying the system is compatible with a wide range of materials and die-cutting processes. This is highly beneficial to a company like Positive Packaging, which converts many opaque, transparent and reflective substrates, such as BOPP, metalized film, high-gloss cast polypropylene film. The system offers fast set-up times of just a few minutes, even when changing to a different substrate type and thickness. This simplicity is
ideal for an environment like Positive Packaging where productivity depends on minimal downtime as nearly half of the company's jobs are between 25,000 and 30,000 linear meters. Autotron's mark-recognition system helps reduce make-ready waste by locking on to even low-contrast marks at make-ready. It provides secure mark localization and a quick transition to the new production substrate without needing to stop the press. In this way, makeready waste can be confined to a few hundred web-meters. A key factor in the decision to invest in the Autotron 2600 system was the close relationship that Positive Packaging has enjoyed with QuadTech for many years. "QuadTech's technical support crew provides training sessions so that the operators can exploit the full potential of the system from the beginning. We also receive on-line remote diagnostics, to prevent any problems from emerging," Mr. Pranesh Kankanwadi explained.

Tablets to reach 195 million units by 2015 Sales of media tablets to reach 195 million units by 2015, causing paper use in magazines to fall by 20% and to half in fifteen years time across the world. Media tablets are on pace to become a ubiquitous, mass-market, consumer product faster than any-other previously released, technological device. The powerful implications of this rapid adoption on publication paper markets is the subject of a new study The Impact of Media Tablets on Publication Paper Markets, published by RISI, the leading information provider for the global forest products industry. The market for media tablets - consisting of tablet computers (including Apple's iPad) and electronic readers (including Amazon's Kindle) exploded in 2010. By the end of the first year of availability, over 15 million tablet computers were in use. In North America alone, the size of the electronic reader market almost doubled, with over 10 million in use. Early-on, signs of trouble for the publication paper market became clear:
*In 2010, the top free app in Apple’s iTunes store was iBooks. *A Morgan Stanley inquiry discovered that 42% of US tablet owners will cancel their print newspaper subscription *In May of this year, Amazon.com announced that ebook sales now exceed those of printed book sales in the U.S. "Many graphic paper producers make their living selling paper to the publishing industry, those companies will be greatly affected by media tablets," explains John Maine, RISI's Vice President World Graphic Paper and Study Team Leader. "Significant demand impacts could come as soon as 2012."
The Impact of Media Tablets on Publication Paper Markets finds that by 2015, most publishing paper end uses in North America, such as magazine, newspaper and book publishing, will fall 12-21% compared to their 2010 levels. This is on top of the massive collapse that occurred during the recent recession. Paper use in North American books, magazines and newspapers could see another 40-50% fall over the next 15 years. Market declines are also anticipated in Europe, especially for printed newspapers, but the percentage losses in the Western European market will be somewhat less than North America because of a reduced rate of media tablet adoption and fragmented media markets. The Impact of Media Tablets on Publication Paper Markets forecasts the decline by grade and end-use in the Publication Paper Market over the next five, ten and fifteen years, analyzing the effects of e-readers and tablet computers on the North American and Western European markets. The forecast covers three scenarios: a base case, strong impact case (with quicker diffusion of tablets to the mass market) and a weak impact scenario.•

EasySert – an allout winner Once again, the benefits of the EasySert inserting system have enabled Ferag AG to win over a South African customer, with the company awarding special points for the simple handling and consistently high net output, which is unique in this performance class.
In South Africa, Caxton CTP publishes 120 newspaper titles either on its own or in partnership, bringing the total weekly circulation to more than 2 million copies. The daily newspapers are printed at a total of nine facilities. The Cape Town printing centre, where capacity has been extended by a Manroland MediaMAN for contract printing jobs, is one of these. The expansion in printing capacity entailed an adjustment of capacity in the mailroom, where the sharp rise in demand from the South African inserting market was the main focus. For automatic inserting, Caxton CTP sought an easy-to-master solution that delivers a consistent net output of 25,000 copies per hour. Here, with its EasySert inserting system, Ferag was able to win Caxton CTP over right down the line and enable the company to make an uncomplicated start in automatic inserting. A total of two EasySert inserting lines have been installed, each equipped with six hoppers, while a MultiStack compensating stacker takes on the production of standard bundles at the end of each line. One reason for the high performance level of the EasySert inserting lines is the JetFeeder hoppers, which are easy to use and also process an extremely broad range of product thicknesses and formats. The repair function is an integral part of the FlyStream system. It ensures the processing of complete collections only – incomplete

IGAS 2011 on track for Tokyo A press conference held in Tokyo for leading Asia Pacific regional media confirmed that the International Graphic Arts Show – IGAS 2011 – will take place according to plan at Tokyo Big Sight from September 16 to 21.
July 29). The exhibition area in 2011 is approximately 60% of the size of IGAS 2007, following the effects of the global economic crisis as well of course as the events and aftermath of March 11. Organisers are expecting 100,000 to attend the six-day event.
In light of the catastrophic trio of events of March 11, including what is now known as the Great East Japan or Tōhoku megathrust earthquake, the ensuing tsunami and the resulting problems with reactors at the Fukushima I and II Nuclear Power Plants, the organisers of IGAS, the Japan Graphic Arts Suppliers Committee (JGASC), were at pains to point out that it is safe to travel to Japan and that the infrastructure at the exhibition building, Tokyo Big Sight, was not affected by the above incidents. Whilst the Japanese people and industry have been urged to implement a 15% reduction in electricity consumption due to the reduced electricity generation following the shutdown of a number of nuclear reactors, this reduction is apparently being achieved with minimum disruption – most noticeable by visitors as dimly lit and minimally air-conditioned public areas. Stakeholders in the Japanese graphic arts supply industry decided, almost
three months after the disaster, that the best way forward was to support the recovery of the industry by continuing with plans to stage IGAS as normal, whilst offering the industry’s support for those most immediately affected by the disaster - including the residents of approximately 4.4 million households in northeastern Japan who were initially left without electricity and 1.5 million without water. In the immediate aftermath of March 11, as digital communications broke down, residents of the affected areas came to rely upon analogue communications: paper-based communication was the only way many residents could keep in touch with events unfolding. “It is time to reflect on the true nature and value of paper communication at this time,” says JGASC and IGAS president, Yoshiharu Komori. IGAS will occupy all halls of Tokyo Big Sight’s East Building, where 308 companies will exhibit on 2718 stands (as at
Being held exactly six months after the earthquake, organisers are using the event to provide assistance for the restoration of the printing industry in affected areas. Support activities, such as the presentation of donations, special exhibitions in support of reconstruction, a reconstruction assistance ‘stamp rally’ and more will rely upon the cooperation of visitors and exhibitors alike. A member of the league of four largest printing equipment exhibitions in the world held on a rotating basis, IGAS includes lectures and conferences, among them the International Forum on the Environment, Global Print meetings, the Asian Symposium (Japanese Society of Printing Science and Technology), the Autumn Seminar (Japanese Society of Printing Science and Technology), the World Printing Conference (Japan Federation of Printing Industries) and the All Japan Printing Industry Association Forum (All Japan Printing Industry Association). Meanwhile, the research activities of 14 laboratories at universities all over Japan are displayed in the “Advanced Technology Zone” which has become a highly anticipated offering of IGAS. Other industry groups scheduled to meet include Global Print, the Japan Printing Machinery Association, the All Japan Printing Industry Association and CIP4. •

Wide Format / Proofing Technology
Vast potential of its high speed, high quality :M-Press Leopard Following its official launch, Agfa Graphics has now released full details at FESPA Digital of its new :M-Press Leopard which is targeted at the growing numbers of users who want the speed and quality of offset litho and screen-printing but with the convenience of a wide-format ink-jet platform. Designed on the same lines as the :M-Press Tiger, this new machine offers very fast throughput rates and the ability to produce doublesided print with precision registration.
Although the concept behind the original :M-Press's with in-line screenprinting and high end digital capabilities has made it a firm favourite amongst print houses throughout the world, Agfa Graphics has acknowledged that many users want only the benefits obtained from its high quality digital technology. As a result, the company has used the same advanced components and construction found in today's :M-Press Tiger and adapted these into a new dedicated wide-format ink-jet platform called the :M-Press Leopard. Thus, the newly introduced :M-Press Leopard is designed to target the midsized print service provider whose output requirements sit in the bracket of 200,000 to 500,000 m2 of print per year. This productivity strategy is also based on reliability, on extremely high print quality and, although the printer doesn't incorporate a screen-printing facility, on its feeding and unloading table produced using Thieme's existing technology.
The design of the :M-Press Leopard is based on a manual loading and offloading concept. This functionality is designed to accommodate changing job types and double-sided output which cannot be handled practically with a fully or partially automated system. A solidly designed and constructed platform, the Agfa :M-Press Leopard produces accurate registration at sizes as small as A3, thanks to the 29 lay-on pins which align the material precisely. The design of the powerful vacuum bed makes loading and offloading fast and foolproof, with quick swapping of media and efficient and accurate recto to verso (front-to-back) turning for double-sided prints. The design of the vacuum bed includes 55 separate zones for optimum hold-
down on different sizes of sheet. Lighter media is aligned using the front pins whilst, to maintain optimum stability, a series of rear lay pins is used to hold heavier substrates firmly in place. Agfa's advanced shuttle design is incorporated into the :M-Press Leopard and this utilises its established UPH 2 (Universal Print Head) technology that incorporates greyscale variable droplet technology which results in fewer passes being required to achieve the required quality. Its drop sizes range from 10 picolitre through to a maximum of 26 picolitres. Using Agfa's Wave Form and ink optimisation capabilities, the volume of the base sub-droplet is controlled to generate the finest and most accurate output. This feature negates

Wide Format / Proofing Technology the requirement for additional colours beyond CMYK, thus reducing overall ink costs, and smooth highlights, sharp text and vivid solid colours can be produced without noise or grain. The Agfa :M-Press Leopard benefits from its :Apogee workflow which includes all necessary functions so essential to the colour accurate consistency required for wide-format applications, such as for high end retail advertising and point-of-sale. This workflow software also simplifies prepress time; it is configured for true JDF connectivity, with the advantage of sophisticated and effective variable data printing and versioning (:Apogee Vibe) bringing much needed versatile customisation into today's jobs. With a maximum print size of 1.6m x 2.6m, the Agfa :M-Press Leopard is geared for fast job change-over and extremely high output quality, suitable for even the closest viewing. It can work with flexible and rigid materials up to 5cm in thickness, and its low ink consumption and versatility are designed to challenge both offset and screen-printing in terms of running costs and print standards.
Maximum print speeds for the Agfa :M-Press Leopard are 483 m2/hour and, even in photographic quality mode, the machine achieves 283 m2/ hour. This versatile printer is driven by the criteria needed to produce finished prints in the optimum time, not being compromised by the need for fast job change-over or the swapping of materials from one type to another. productivity wide-format ink-jet printer which is designed to accommodate a variety of sizes and weights of material should find that the new ruggedly constructed Agfa :M-Press Leopard matches their requirements. The benefits of fast change-over, precision accuracy on double-sided prints and a reliable and consistent engine technology has resulted in a machine which doesn't compromise any area of the production process. •

News Fuji Xerox axes April
Fuji Xerox has ceased selling cut-sheet paper manufactured by one of the big two paper companies in Indonesia, April, due to concerns about the Sumatran tiger, an issue which is also causing rival APP considerable grief. Fuji Xerox is one of April’s big two cut sheet paper distributors in this country, Officeworks being the other. Fuji Xerox blacklisted cut sheet paper from APP in 2004. APP is currently battling the attempts of Greenpeace to have its paper products banned here. Virtually all major Australian paper merchants supply APP stock to the commercial print industry. While much paper sourced from Asia is currently under sustained attack from the environmental lobby, the attack also includes paper sourced from native Australian forests, including that supplied to Australian Paper to make its top selling Reflex brand. Paper manufacturers look to external accreditation agencies such as FSC to validate the environmental credentials of their papers, however there is a growing concern in the paper industry that bodies such as FSC, which have no direct connection to or interest in print, and which some claim are linked to antipaper groups such as the WWF, are wielding too much influence. One industry insider reportedly said, “The print industry has been brilliant at paying FSC for the privilege of promoting them, and giving them far too much power, how has that happened it’s a business masterstroke on the part of FSC, and is certainly not in the best interests of print.” Analysts see the growing influence of FSC as akin to that of Adobe, who some claim virtually hold the print industry to ransom by virtue of their almost total dominance of the market, and for whom print is low on its list of priorities.
Introducing the first compostable confectionery packaging
Joint project by Innovia Films, BASF SE, DFTA and Flint Group The sustainable and enduring use of resources plays an increasingly important
role worldwide. This is also true for the packaging industry. Products need to be efficient and sustainable at the same time. More and more biodegradable components for packaging have been introduced by the supplying industry, especially in recent times, and now a compostable confectionery wrapper has been produced in a joint project. The packaging is based on a layout from Kalfany Süße Werbung GmbH & Co. KG. BASF SE has provided the newly developed and fully compostable lamination adhesive Epotal® ECO which is certified by DIN CERTCO. Also compostable are the NatureFlex™ lamination films supplied by Innovia Films for the confectionery bags and wrappers. The printing took place in the technology centre of DFTA (association for flexo printing) in Stuttgart, using printing inks and plates from Flint Group. The wellestablished and proven flexo printing plate nyloflex® ACE Digital was used in the process, which is optimally suited for the printing of flexible and aseptic packaging. The printing ink FlexiPrint MV that was used for the project is heavy metal-free and also suitable for composting. High colour strength and excellent gloss can be achieved with this ink system that is free of TAA and phthalates. The new confectionery packaging has been distributed with great success at various exhibitions and events.

Silverpoint installs HP Indigo 3550 for short-run and proofing
The highly rated commercial printer with a complete plant in Mahape (40 kms from Mumbai) and offers a full range of print and value added services, installed an HP Indigo 3550 to achieve its goals. "We are excited to offer our customers true lithographic quality printing on virtually any substrate, and the lower environmental impact the press offers is just as important as the quality," said Saifee Makasarwala, COO, Silverpoint. "We never make a business decision without putting a ton of consideration into its environmental impact. We like how the HP Indigo 3550 removes nearly all the makeready waste in production for more-efficient short-run printing." Many of the artists and graphic design professionals working for Silverpoint's clients have high expectations in terms of colour quality and accuracy.
Makasarwala said: "We lay a lot of emphasis on managing the colour of the print jobs we do. It is a standardised process right from capturing images to pre-media and later, printing. Apart from this, choosing the correct paper accentuates the desired colour and sharpness." More than 60% of printing at Silverpoint is done on speciality paper. The company’s art of printing is visible in the anomalous approach towards print technology which includes etching of paper, an array of fabrication and finishing techniques, innovative concepts and designs among others. The company was the pioneer for printing on uncoated paper in India. "We consider our customer base to be the most creative in the industry," added Makasarwala, "so the HP Indigo ability to run CMYK inks plus Pantonelicensed spot colors and white ink is exciting for us and it really unlocks the artistic potential of our customer base." The HP Indigo 3550 is HP’s flagship sheetfed press designed to produce 8,000 images per hour of paper format 330x482mm with a wide colour gamut with up to five-colour printing. It is capable of an automatic duplex, in-line quality printing control that offers a resolution of 812 dpi, 812 x 1624 dpi H. The press is suited to handle short- to medium-run length jobs as well as highvalue applications such as variable-datadriven marketing collateral, photo books and personalised direct mail.
Jetrion for short run labels
The EFI Jetrion digital label press is aimed at label printers looking to work with short runs, just in time and variable data printing In the fledgling digital label printing sector the EFI Jetrion digital label has already achieved high credibility by winning the Label Industry Award for New Innovation. According to the company the Jetrion 4000 and 4830 UV inkjet systems combine EFI’s core strengths of workflow, rip technology, ink development and machine manufacturing to offer converters an affordable route into short run, variable data printing. With installations across Australia, Asia, Europe, North and South America, EFI says the Jetrion 4000 and 4830 has broken down cost barriers to allow converters and brand owners of all sizes to take advantage of the multitude of opportunities offered by digital technology. Russell Robertson, DES sales director of Label and Packaging Markets says, “Jetrion is aimed at label printers looking at the short run option, with fast turnarounds. You can change jobs so quickly, in fact you can change on the fly with about 15 seconds between the two jobs. This means that in many cases you may have printed an entire job while a conventional press is still being made ready.” According to Robertson, the growing need for variable data label printing is also driving label printers to look at digital presses. He says, “Some sectors such as pharmaceuticals are looking to put increasing amounts of variable data on labels, and there of course digital rises to the fore.” Robertson says, the crossover point for the EFI is at about 30,000 labels, anything below that and the Jetrion will score. He also says that in the digital label market the price point of Jetrion makes a compelling argument, especially for label printers looking for a straight four colour and white printing option. It will print on virtually any standard media - although some cast coated stocks may need a primer – as it is a UV printer. It doesn’t need a controlled environment and finishing can be in line or offline.

News Labelexpo Europe. EFI says Jetrion Industrial Inkjet Systems enable label converters, and direct mail and packaging printers to embrace the new world of digital printing.
There are no click charges or need for OPV to protect the image Robertson says, “There are strong drivers for digital label printing. First of all customers are becoming astute at targeting different market areas and demographics, which means lots of shorter runs rather than one long run. Secondly just in time printing allows the end user to reduce working capital tied up in excessive stored inventory by replacing it with on demand printing. And of course cost is a big driver, digital printing means short runs are very cost effective.” With speeds of up to 30.5m per minute at more than 1,000 dpi with greyscale technology, the Jetrion 4000 and 4830 systems deliver full-colour label and variable data printing up to 139mm wide on the 4000 and 210mm wide on the 4830. The system also features Jetrion’s advanced UV4000 ink set which EFI says provides durability and eliminates the need for costly over-laminates. The Jetrion is integrated with EFI’s Fiery XF rip software, making it, says the company, the most versatile and scalable platform in the industry. This combination provides a PDF-based workflow, top-notch ICC colour management, support for different input file types and the ability to generate CMYK expanded gamut outputs. Robertson says Jetrion inks provide outstanding colour reproduction across a wide range of substrates, and ensure that users get the lowest possible cost per print. Label Award EFI’s pioneering developments in inkjet technology were recognised at the Label Industry Global Awards, held during
Jetrion was announced the winner of the Label Industry Award for New Innovation at a gala dinner during Labelexpo Europe. The judging panel praised the company’s pioneering developments in inkjet printing technology and software, which have seen the Jetrion 4000 UV inkjet system become a market leading, full-colour narrow web alternative to toner-based digital printers. Russell Robertson at DES says, “To receive the award after such a short space of time is a fantastic honour. It is testament to the hard work of the EFI team and to the input and support from the customers, without whom we could not have achieved it. EFI began Jetrion seven years ago and now it has a full portfolio, which includes software, printers and ink. Providing such a complete offering was a key reason behind the win and it also allows us to supply label converters with affordable, high quality products. This is a one stop solution from DES and EFI”.

No. 1 in black & white in continuous feed printer market According to InfoTrends, Océ also captured the number one position in the b&w continuous feed printer market for the fifteenth consecutive year. “Although a lot of the focus in the industry is around color, the volume of documents printed in black & white remains high. The b&w printer market remains a cornerstone of our strategy and business,” said Landesberger.
