Words : Adrienne Jordan
This year marks the 50th anniversary of The Sound of Music, the musical-turned-film and one of Hollywood’s most successful movies. Today, visitors to Salzburg can see many of the places featured in the film, including Mirabell Gardens, Residence Square, St. Peter’s Cemetery, and the Dom zu Salzburg cathedral.

ARE ALIVE
he fascination with Salzburg’s musical backbone is never-ending, from the genius beginnings of Mozart, to 200 years later with The Sound of Music, which won five Oscars in 1965. Millions around the world fell in love with Maria, the lead character with a passion for Salzburg’s lush mountains and joined on her journey with the Von Trapp family. A bewitching mix of medieval and modern buildings give way to world-class museums, quaint boutiques, and historic cafes, making the Austrian city an enchanting place to visit.

SOUND OF MUSIC ATTRACTIONS BAROQUE GLORY
A
t the beginning of The Sound of Music, Maria leaves the convent and begins her journey to the Von Trapp household. En route, she sings “I Have Confidence” inside the beautiful Residence Square, a stopping point next to the archiepiscopal residences in the heart of Salzburg’s Old City.

he exquisitely manicured Mirabell Gardens might be the most memorable destination in the The Sound of Music. Colourful pansies, peonies, and tulips are planted in beautiful curves imitating baroque lace patterns. It’s easy to see how Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau wooed his paramour, Salome Alt in the 17th century with this romantic display.

Maria and the Von Trapp children sing “Do Re Mi” through these gardens, circling the sculpture of the dwarf comedian inside the Dwarf Garden. They also run down the lush pergola walk, which leads guests to the Hedge Theatre and Mirabell Maze. Inside the garden sits the Pegasus Fountain featuring Greek figures twisting and reaching with dramatic facial expressions, each representing an element: fire, air, earth, and water. In the summer, the gardens come alive with street musicians, and every Thursday morning, the farmers’ market at St. Andrew’s Church in Mirabell Square is packed with fresh produce. Close by, The Sound of Music puppetry performances are staged by the 100-year-old Marionette Theatre.

Like Maria, visitors can dip their hands in the Residence Fountain, an impressive marble sculpture bearing four snorting horses – stately steeds rooted in rock – and a Triton with a shell. The fountain, built in 1666, is the largest baroque fountain outside of Italy, and inspires the Old Town’s nickname “The Rome of the North”.

T
he grey, imposing Fortress Hohensalzburg that peers from the top of the Mönchsberg, or Monks Mountain, can be seen from almost every area of Salzburg (and can be seen in the background of many scenes in the film). Visitors can access the fort by taking a quick ride on the funicular; at the top, some of the Sound of Music film locations can be viewed from an aerial perspective, including the Nonnberg Abbey, Leopoldskron Castle and Hellbrunn Palace.

hile in Salzburg, be sure to tour the DomQuartier, the former centre of power for the prince-archbishops. Recently renovated to connect all three buildings inside the Residence Square (Cathedral, Residence and Benedictine Monastery of St. Peter), visitors can glide through the halls as if they themselves were a figure from the monarchal rule. Open to the public include art from Rembrandt and Hans Makart, as well as the treasure room of the archbishops bearing testament of their surprising obsessions including collections of seashells and fish from around the world.

Inside Monks Mountain lie 4th century Catacombs, believed to have been unearthed during the rock slide of 1669. Peer out from a window inside the Catacombs, and you will spot the Dom zu Salzburg Cathedral, its two green domes visible in The Sound of Music wedding scene. At the base of the Fortress, the St. Peter’s Cemetery was where the Von Trapp family hid from the Nazis in the film. If you take a close look at some of the names on the tombstones, you will notice that a number of famous people are buried here, including Joseph Haydn, Mozart’s sister, and American general Harry Collins.

The E. Rothbart porcelain shop on this street sells miniature cats, pigs, and dogs and other knickknacks. For the fashion-forward, Via Venty is a chic boutique displaying European designers including Luciano Barachini and Innate. To take a break from shopping, pop into the 1820 St. Sebastiankirsche Church, which has a slight mildewy smell reminiscent of what churches without modern ventilation must have smelled like 200 years ago.

The must-try Mozart dinner
The Getreidegasse, located in the Old Town, is the other main shopping street in Salzburg, with small romantic passageways and courtyards tucked between narrow houses. This 5th Avenue or Rodeo Drive equivalent is decorated with ornate wrought-iron signs that bear trademark names the likes of Swarovski, Hermès, Louis Vuitton. This is also the destination to purchase traditional and present day Austrian clothing such as dirndls and lederhosen from the shops Dantendorfer and Stassny. 36

inzergasse is a trendy street bearing landmarks like the familyowned Hotel Stadtkrug and 1,000-year-old historic buildings that were once a place for trades such as apothecaries, clockmaking, and butchery. Now they host shops like Yves Rocher and Hannah Trachten which form the backdrop to lovely street scenes, such as couples walking hand-in-hand and young women bicycling with their tiny Maltese companions.
Museum Der Moderne is situated on top of Monks Mountain and affords the best views of the city. The new curator, Beatrice Von Bormann, is spearheading summer exhibitions like Salzburg Unbuilt, E.A.T.: Experiments in Art & Technology, and Andrea Fraser. At Mozart’s Birthplace Museum on Getreidegasse Street, families can see how the young musical genius lived as a child, including furniture from the 1800s, letters from school, and photos of the family.
S
alzburg is home to a food scene that cannot be found elsewhere: main courses and desserts are delivered with authentic Viennese flavours with local twists. A fantastic start to a Salzburg visit is to partake in a thrilling performance at the Mozart Dinner Concert inside a building dubbed “The Oldest Restaurant in Europe”, dating from 803AD. Mozart’s most famous and delightful arias are delivered during a three-course meal inside a room lit by ornate candelabras and chandeliers. Another Viennese dinner experience not to be missed is at s’Herzl, located in a historic goldsmith shop at Hotel Goldener Hirsch on Getreidegasse. This traditional Austrian restaurant serves Viennese-style chicken with Klostersalat by female staff dressed in dirndls. It is recommended to whet the appetite with the local brewed Stiegl beer and a pretzel. Situated within the same hotel, the Bar Hirsch has a famous cocktail called Susanne, in honour of a young girl who came to the bar with her parents and was not able to drink. As she grew older, Susanne added vodka to her signature concoction of orange juice, tonic water, and cassis. The grand historic Hotel Sacher is a popular lunch place where visitors can savour the local dessert, Salzburger Nockerl, named after its resemblance to the three mountains of the city.
WHERE TO STAY:
The Hotel Goldener Hirsch (“Golden Stag”) is located on the main shopping street, Getreidegasse. The elegant hotel attracts classical music lovers worldwide due to its proximity to shops where guests can purchase traditional costumes and then walk a few steps to a concert at the Grosses Festspielhaus. WHAT TO GET: The Salzburg Card, which gives one-time free access to all of the tourist attractions and museums in the city (www.salzburg. info/salzburg-card) 37
