Chamber of Commerce Community Christmas schedule announced Because of extreme cold December 2013, last year’s community Christmas celebration and parade were cancelled. This year, the Marshall Chamber of Commerce event is back on Dec. 5 with a plethora of activities on Marshall’s downtown square — and even a rain date. The evening begins at 5:20 p.m. when students of Shapes Dance and Acro Studio will perform. Dance students from a second studio are tentatively scheduled, but not yet confirmed. The parade begins at 6 p.m., and entries have been filing into the chamber office this past week. According to chamber officials, there are three float categories this year. Floats are entered as “nonprofits,” “business” or “individual,” and prizes are awarded in each category. The nonprofit floats will compete for cash prizes — $200, $100 and $50 for first through third place, respectively. The winner in the “business” category receives a traveling trophy that is rotated between winners each year. The firstplace individual float wins $100. Entries for the float contest are being accepted until Dec. 2. According to chamber officials, the grand marshals of this year’s parade are Wood & Huston Bank — the Business of the Year recipient — and Citizen of the Year Kay Graves. While the chamber is still ironing out the details of the celebration, much has already been planned. “Santa Land”
will take shape after the parade in the Wood & Huston Bank community room. The space is located on the north side of the square. At Santa Land, children will have an opportunity to visit with Santa. Activities also include a free showing of the 1990 hit film “Home Alone” at Marshall Cinema, located at 118 E. North St. UPCOMING CHRISTMAS EVENTS Nov. 26 City of Slater Christmas lighting ceremony on Main St. Lights go on at 6 p.m. followed by a turkey-giveaway drawing. Santa will also be in attendance. Nov. 30 Marshall Philharmonic Orchestra/Marshall Community Chorus Christmas Concert; 2:30-3:30 p.m. in Bueker Middle School’s auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. Dec. 6-7 Marshall Community Chorus performs at First Baptist Church. Performances are at 7 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday. Free and open to the public. Dec. 11 Saline County Holiday Project 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Martin Community Center The project benefits families that need help with children’s gifts and food for the holidays. Oh Christmas tree, such pleasure do you bring thee by Jesse Brown Staff Writer
ith the Christmas season fast approaching, the scramble to find and put up one’s Christmas tree is becoming paramount. For some, an artificial tree from area retailers fits the room nicely, but Christmas enthusiasts who want the real deal go out to find their perfect tree. Gary Mawson, with Blind Pony Nursery, provides the opportunity to buy a real Christmas tree for the people in Marshall and Saline County. “There are still a lot of real Christmas trees sold,” Mawson said, on whether he thought artificial trees were more common. “There are probably still as many sold now as there was 30 years ago, but there’s more population too. Percentage of people that have real Christmas trees has gone down.” Mawson said on average he sells 100 real Christmas trees every year in the Saline County area. According to information from the National Christmas Trees Association’s website, www.realchristmastrees.org, Christmas trees were first commercially sold in America in 1851. Today, approximately 25 to 30 million real trees are sold each year in the country, mostly coming from Christmas tree plantations. Mawson used to grow his own trees, mostly Scotch Pines, because the often dry Midwestern climate supported it. Today, he receives his trees from Dutchman Tree Farms in Michigan, where the wet climate helps the trees grow from six to 10 feet in height. He said he mostly receives Fraser Firs from Michigan because they’re the most practical.
W
“They stay fresher longer, they hold their needles good and they’re very aromatic,” Mawson said. “Even when I was growing Scotch Pines, I would put a Fraser Fir in my house. “When you have a Christmas tree farm, you start out planting seedlings,” he said, describing the process of continuously growing Christmas trees. “About the third year, you start shearing and shaping them. From then on, you have to do each one of them every single year. It’s very labor intensive, and it’s done June and July when it’s usually hot. It’s not a lot of fun.” On the Dutchman Tree Farms website — www.dutchmantreefarms.com — it states they inspect each seedling before planting, then monitor, trim and fertilize each tree for seven to 10 years before harvest. “We sold a lot of wholesale trees years ago back when I was younger. We sold as many as 7,500 trees in a year. At one time, we had 75,000 trees growing,” Mawson said, talking about keeping an adequate amount of trees growing each year. “That was way too many.” Mawson said he has 100 Christmas trees ordered this year and the price ranges from $25 to $125. Mawson said it’s unbelievable how much work it takes to keep a Christmas tree farm up and running. However, he still wants to keep on providing that experience to those in the county and for future generations. “I enjoy it ... It’s just the fact that I have customers who come back every year and I see their kids grow up and people that we had as customers 30 years ago, their kids are coming back to us to buy trees,” Mawson said. “It’s a tradition.”

Holiday survival guide: quick tricks to eliminate hassles and headaches (BPT) — ‘Tis the season for family gatherings, dinner parties, gift exchanges and the sound of laughter coming from around the table. With the hustle and bustle surrounding the holidays, finding ways to reduce stress can help you survive the season. Here are six simple tips that will help your holidays go from hectic to holly and jolly, with even a little time left over to relax before your guests start arriving.
CLEAN SWEEP YOUR TO-DO LIST
Getting a jump start on your home’s preparations will keep you from burning out early. Clean the house thoroughly a few weeks prior to your big event instead of waiting until the last minute. Check for any light bulbs that need to be replaced, carpet stains that need treatment, and pesky cobwebs in your fixtures. Discard old condiments in the refrigerator and add more to your shopping list. Baking soda and a warm rag left on a
take-out containers and keep your Tupperware safe at home. Pick up an assortment of blank, disposable take-out boxes from your local craft store and apply adhesive labels. Write your guests’ names on the labels and decorate the boxes for the occasion with embellishments and glue. When it’s time to fill each box as your guests prepare to leave, keep a marker and extra labels nearby so you can also write down what treats they’ll find in each container.
glass cook top for 15minutes leaves your surface sparkling - no elbow grease required. Don’t forget your oven - the self-cleaning option saves you time so you can move on to the next task.
OWN THE TRADITION
While the tradition of celebrating holidays is passed down from one generation to the next, there’s no need to hide your personal flair. Forgo a traditional centerpiece and create a tablescape reflective of your family’s personality instead. To add dimension to your dessert table, glue candlesticks to mismatched plates to create holiday treat pedestals. Only have a few minutes before your guests arrive? Use Krazy Glue Craft Gel to create centerpieces and personalized place settings out of beads, gourds, holiday baubles and handwritten name cards. Even if your handwriting didn’t score an A , your guests will appreciate the special touch.

SATISFY THE SENSES
Add a few drops of essential pine oil to your air filter to keep your home smelling festive even if you have a fake tree. For a softer scent, boil water and add vanilla extract, rosemary and a few lemon slices. Opt for table lamps in the living room instead of harsh overhead lights. The warm yellow glow will add to the ambiance of candles, fireplaces and twinkling string lights. Finally, have a few family-friendly movies on hand to provide your guests with entertainment and a little down time between dinner and dessert.

When the holidays are over, ornaments don’t always find their way back to their original packaging. Wreath bags, ornament organizers, dinner plate containers and string light storage bins keep your decorations safe during the off-season. If you have wrapping paper left over that you’d like to save for next season, cut a toilet paper roll lengthwise and wrap it around the wrapping paper to prevent unraveling. To avoid holiday emergencies next year, keep a small, unopened tube of Krazy Glue’s Maximum Bond formula with the breakable decorations to quickly fix any ornaments, centerpieces or china that might get damaged in storage. Elegant and often extravagant celebrations are at our fingertips in magazines, blogs and on sites like Pinterest and Etsy. The images inspire us to host picture-perfect holiday celebrations, but we can find ourselves in over our heads when it comes time to execute. Remembering these six simple tips will prepare you for a headache-free holiday season.
