New Caffeinated Potato Chips Offer

Boost Of Energy

Reporting Jorge Estevez

MIAMI (CBS4) – If you need a jolt of energy, coffee and sodas are not the only answer anymore. A new kind of potato chip can give you the same buzz you’d get from energy drinks and they look and crunch the like any other chip. In addition to potato’s salt and spices, they have B vitamins, caffeine and taurine, an ingredient commonly found in energy drinks. “I think they’re trying to target the young those who are athletic or wish to be,” said Jo Ann Hattner, a nutritionist who is surprised to hear of yet another energy product. Hattner questions whether coating potato chips with energy supplements really give you much of a boost. “It’s what I call an image food. 70 milligrams of caffeine is really not that much, you might get that in a shot of espresso,” said Hattner. With espresso you’d get fewer calories. The Arma energy chips, for example, come with 70 milligrams of caffeine and 290 calories. Compare that to a can of Red bull which has 80 milligrams for 110 calories. A shot of espresso offers the same boost with only 5 calories. So gram for gram, if you are watching your weight, this

product may not be for you. “We strive for whole foods as much as possible that would give the most energy over a sustained period of time,” said personal trainer Elizabeth Bachrad. But just because they’re not for the health conscious doesn’t mean they are not for people looking for a tasty treat with a bit of a boost. However, the product is not recommended for pregnant women and children.

Rubio Weighs In On

Contraceptive Controversy Reporting Jim DeFede

MIAMI (CBS4) – “Is contraception wrong?” CBS4’s Jim DeFede asked Senator Marco Rubio in a recent exclusive one-on-one interview.

“In terms of?” he responds. “Birth control,” I said. “Of course not,” he replied. “Who says it is? You’re going to get into this whole argument about contraception. No one has ever said that contraception should be illegal, that contraception should be discouraged, that people should be looked down upon for using it. The only argument that there ever has been about this issue isn’t even about contraception, it’s about religious liberty.” If Senator Marco Rubio sounds a little defensive on the issue it’s with good reason. Earlier this year, Rubio co-sponsored the Blunt Amendment, a measure that would allow any employer to stop providing insurance coverage for items such as birth control if the employer finds those items morally objectionable. The amendment was intended to counter a proposal by the Obama Administration – but many saw it as a massive over reach on the part of Republicans into the reproductive rights of women. On its own, it is hard to know if the amendment would have stirred an ongoing debate. But presidential candidate Rick Santorum set the stage for the controversy by vowing, if elected, he

would use the presidency to rail against the use of contraception. “Many in the Christian faith have said, `Oh that’s okay, contraception is okay,’” Santorum told an interviewer. “We; it’s not okay.” Then there was Republican Congressman Darrell Issa’s decision to hold a hearing on contraception but refuse to allow any women to testify. And finally there were the comments by Rush Limbaugh about Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke, in which the radio host called the coed “a slut” and “a prostitute” because she believed her school, despite its religious affiliation, should cover the cost of contraceptives. Amid this backdrop, Rubio suddenly found himself at the center of a political firestorm. Democrats, hoping to tarnish the possible vice presidential candidate, began referring to the Blunt Amendment as the Blunt-Rubio Amendment. The name stuck. And virtually overnight, Rubio was being accused of waging a war on women. Even Rubio admits Republicans lost the rhetorical argument. “Well look rhetoric is powerful in politics,” he said, somewhat chagrined. “You have a very effective communicator as President, who has gone around

saying, `This is about contraception, this is not about religious liberty.’ Early on in the debate it was about religious liberty. Unfortunately the rhetorical argument was lost.” And with it could go the presidential election. Recent polls show that in twelve key swing states – including Florida – President Obama has now opened as much as a twenty point lead among women. Pollsters argue it is largely the result of the contraception controversy. “So how much damage has this ended up causing the Republican Party?” I asked Rubio. “I don’t know,” he said bluntly. “I don’t know the answer to that. “ During a recent interview with CBS4 News, Rubio spoke at length for the first time about the controversy. And although the amendment he co-sponsored is dead, he continued to defend his position “The question is whether the federal government should have the power to require a religious organization to pay for something that the religious organization teaches against,” he argued. “And if the federal government has the power to do that, then what limits to its power does it have? What religious liberties do we have? That was the fundamental argu-

ment here. “ “But isn’t it then a dramatic shift in power to the employer,” I countered, “who suddenly has almost like a fiefdom over his employees and can decide, based on his moral beliefs, what he will provide for his employees?” “I don’t believe that is the way the law could be applied,” he said. “I don’t believe that somebody could all of a sudden decide, `Hey I change my mind, I’m all of a sudden not going to provide for any health insurance coverage that covers this because I think it’s wrong.’” Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski — who voted for the Blunt-Rubio amendment – recently declared she made a mistake. And in a radio interview in Alaska last week, Murkowski said she was advising her colleagues to rethink their efforts to undermine access to birth control. “It makes no sense to go down this road,” she said. “It makes no sense to attack women. And if you don’t view it as an attack on women then you need to go home. You need to talk to your wives, you need to talk to your daughters [and] ask them if they feel this is an attack.” “First of all it’s not an attack on women,” Rubio told me when I read Murkowski’s comments. “Nor is she

saying that it is. I think what she is saying is that is how it is being perceived. And as I’ve told you before rhetoric is reality in politics.” I asked Rubio if he had taken Murkowski’s advice and spoken to his wife about how women perceive this debate. “You know I haven’t had a conversation with her about the bill in particular,” he said. “Early on I did,

when it had to do with religious liberty, and I think most Americans early on felt like it overstepped the bounds of religious liberty.” Rubio might want to consult with his wife on the issue — and although her vote might not be in doubt, there are a lot of independent women voters who are dumbfounded that in 2012 their access to contraception is being threatened.

Pythons April 20, 2012

Moving From The Everglades To

Reporting Jorge Estevez

The Concrete Jungle

Pythons have been getting a lot of attention lately. The snakes have spread across South Florida, and the nuisance has lead to a ban which has spiked a campaign from those in favor and those against the reptiles who are not native to Florida. Some groups are grateful for the ban, which begins in late March, others feel it will not do anything but create unnecessary panic. Pythons are hard to find, tough to capture and impossible to control. Proof can be seen in pictures obtained by CBS4 across South Florida of python sightings: from a farm in Homestead, to an African python found south of Bird Road, to one found in Kendall and another in Miramar. The pictures taken by various trappers and government agencies uncover a new reality: snakes are popping up across south Florida. “We don’t know if it’s tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands,” said Eric Stienmetz, with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, who patrols for pythons in the Keys. The mangrove swamp area provides endless pathways where pythons can move freely and eventually spread across even more urban areas. Under a watch for almost ten years by government agencies, the python population has grown. New numbers from Everglades National Park show that in 2002, it stood at about 20, in 2006 it jumped to around 175 pythons captured, it peaked in 2009 at about 375 and then dropped in 2010 to 325. Besides being a nuisance, studies show pythons have proven to be damaging to our eco-system. “They eat our local deer, hogs, raccoon, possums, the key largo wood rat,” said Steinmetz. If not properly fed, they can also pose a danger to people and pets. A scenario that is all to familiar to the Moore family in Key Largo. “Next thing I know, my wife is shaking me and said John, John, get up, get up. What’s wrong? What’s wrong,” said John Moore. He awoke to find a snake slither onto his couch in his docked house boat. “I saw a python with its head looking at the cat and the cat was looking at it. It looked like it was going to get it at any time,” said Moore. The cat survived and the snake got away. Further north, off Biscayne Blvd. and 71st street, a snake was discovered just this month in the yard of a house in the upper east side of Miami. Professionals with Expert Wildlife Trappers Inc. are responding to more snake calls from unsuspecting families worried for their safety. “If a snake gets inside the house, they don’t know how to handle it,” said

Osmar Silva, owner of Expert Wildlife Trappers. Maps also show that the snakes are spreading. Tracking from the website, www.Eddmaps.org shows hundreds of reported incidents across Florida. To help control the population, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission now has a hotline, 1-888-Ive-got1. “The goal is to be able to find exotic wildlife out in the environment and to be able to respond and take them out of the environment,” said Jenny Ketterlin Eckles, a biologist with FWC. The group www.SavetheBurms.org addresses the overpopulation. They work closely with FWC to find homes for pythons. “If someone wants to get rid of the animals, we have to provide a home for them it is necessary,” said Matthew Passman. People have had them for pets for years. According to experts, the secret to maintaining a healthy python is to properly feed it. By doing so, you ensure the python will not go on the attack for food. Gathering food is the main reason why experts say pythons become aggressive. Pythons are believed to have escaped into the wild for two reasons: people may have released them after not realizing how to take care of them, and Hurricane Andrew in 1992. The storm may have done damage to pet shops in its path, sending snakes to roam free in the Everglades. So with hundreds of acres of Everglades, extermination is not an option, according to experts. “They are very good at hiding. Even a 16 foot snake can disappear in the saw grass,” said Ketterlin Eckles. Experts feel we need to make policies for proper management of a majestic species which is thriving in the Florida landscape. “They are going to reproduce faster. We are going to have more of them,” said Steinmetz

New Details Emerge In

Miami Beach Official

Corruption Reporting David Sutta

MIAMI (CBS4) – Documents

obtained by CBS4 show a system of corruption and payoffs that spans not just a few months on Miami Beach but perhaps more than a decade. As the booze was flowing at Club Dolce on Ocean Drive, code and fire inspectors looked the other way. All the while cops were running drugs to Aventura. The federal investigation all started with Miami Beach senior code inspector Jose Alberto. While the city was honoring him recently, the FBI says he and a network of his inspectors were shaking down the owner of Club Dolce. The establishment is now closed. The alleged operation was quite simple. According to an FBI informant, Alberto threatened with huge fines of $40,000 to $50,000. It was enough to shut clubs down. Alberto allegedly than offered to make the fines and violations go away with payments. As the money flowed, more than $15,000 to Alberto according to documents, the inspections and problems went away. When it came to fire inspections, Chai Footman offered up his services to undercover agents as long as he could quote “hang out and party and chill.”

Footman was known to party and on one night out, the FBI says he rang up more than $3500 in free booze and food. Eventually the beach’s senior fire inspector allegedly got involved. Henry Bryant was recorded on numerous occasions taking kickbacks for “taking care of things”. Bryant had a clever way of demanding money, according to the documents. He would always say he needed it for charity. In one instance he’s recorded saying he needs to buy 20 bicycles for kids that cost $100 each, meaning he wanted $2,000. Documents show Bryant bragging about how he and Alberto worked together. “I have worked with him for about 12 years on every little gig I had.” He went on to say “We kept a place open that violated every (expletive) rule in the law but the guy was paying us four grand.” Bryant continued on telling undercover agents he been in business for 25 years and confirmed he would not get caught. Over the holidays Bryant would take things even

further. According to the FBI agent, Bryant agreed to run drugs. Undercover agents supplied him with duffle bags of sham cocaine. On two occasions Bryant allegedly delivered the drugs to a car parked in the Aventura mall and then at a nearby Publix. As disturbing as the accusation is, it’s who he did it with that has raised eyebrows. Bryant claimed to have Miami Beach and MiamiDade cops escorting the drugs to Aventura. Miami-Dade officer Daniel Mack was charged as part of the operation. However, he may just one of many corrupt officers still on the job. Bryant told undercover agents he had connection to eight dirty cops to make even more drug runs. At $3500 a pop, it was good money until they were busted this week. This story is still developing and we will continue to follow it.

Get Your Mortgage Paid For By Turning Your House Into A Billboard

Reporting Jorge Estevez

MIAMI (CBS4) — Would you paint

your house orange or green, if it meant living mortgage free for a year? Some local residents are hoping to turn their homes into gigantic billboards and cash in. Thousands are applying for the chance at a transformation to turn their classic Florida homes from drab to fab. “I don’t mind. I don’t care what color you paint my house as long as you pay my mortgage,” said Claudette Marc, who applied for a chance to have her house painted. Marc lives in northwest Miami and wants her home to spruce up their neighborhood.

“I think it will be beautiful. I think people will admire it,” said Marc to CBS4’s Jorge Estevez. The marketing company Braniacs from Mars came up with the idea to use people’s homes as advertisements and transform them into gigantic billboards. Brainiacs CEO Romeo Mendoza cannot believe the response he has received from thousands of people across the country. “We are a very out of the box marketing company. We provide unique marketing solutions for large and small businesses,” said Mendoza. Just how far out of the box? One family in Buena Park, California, is getting their mortgage paid for a year. “We thought it would be nice to have a company pay the mortgage so we could pay down our bills

and the credit card balances and stuff like that,” said Scott Hostettler. The company behind this idea budgeted for a hundred paint jobs but had no idea the depth of need. “Now we’re easily surpassing 40 thousand applications and it’s really all over the world,” said Mendoza. Among the applicants, Claudette who discovered the contest on line while searching for ways to help pay her mortgage after losing her nursing job. “I have three kids and my grandson so taking care of them, the house, and the bills, is just hard,” she said. In order to qualify, you must own your home. Chances are if you live in a gated subdivision, your home owner’s association won’t let you go through with it if you get selected.

New Device Can

Detect Heart Attacks Early Reporting Cynthia Demos

MIAMI (CBSMiami.COM) – What

if you could get a warning that you were about to have a heart attack and you could get to the hospital to prevent it from striking? A trial is underway to make that device available in the U.S. The new pacemaker-like device will vibrate and an alarm, worn like a pager, will go off if you are about to have a heart attack. “They’re able to read signals before patient develops symptoms,” said cardiologist Dr. Juan Carlo Londono. Dr. Londono is the principal investigator of the “angel med guardian.” Humberto Alvarez uses the device and showed CBS4 that it’s placed on his chest and is covered by a scar. Alvarez is one of the patients in the trial. “With the device I feel comfort and have peace of mind,” Alvarez said. You could compare the device to a seismometer in the earth’s surface that detects an earthquake. The device can detect tremors in your heart before the heart attack even happens. When the device goes off it signals if it is an emergency or if

you just need to see your doctor. “When they come in earlier and get treated rapidly we save lives,” Dr. London said. Alvarez had the device surgically implanted two months ago just six months after he had a heart attack and thought he was going to die. If the device ever goes off, he’ll know what to do and hopefully never have to endure the trauma of a heart attack again. “This is my angel,” Humberto said. The device is approved in South America and Europe, but is seeking approval in the U.S. There are 350 people in the countrywide trial so far; 600 more people are needed. The researchers are looking for people that in the past six months had a heart attack or severe chest pain. To take part in the trial either call angel med at 305-858-4300 or go to www.angel-med.com.

Broward Identifies

Multiple Cases Of

Whooping Cough Reporting Tim Kephart

Whooping cough is the most dangerous for babies. In an infant, the cough can be minimal or not present, but the disease can cause babies to stop breathing. FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami.com) – Broward County Health officials reported Saturday they have discovered four confirmed cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis. The confirmed cases were reported in three school age children and one adult. Since January, numerous counties in Florida have seen a spike in whooping cough cases. That’s also in line with outbreaks that have been happening in multiple states across the countries. Most cases of whooping cough impact children, but adults have also been known to contract the disease. The disease is highly contagious and targets the respiratory system. Most people develop symptoms of whooping cough in a week to 10 days after

being exposed. But, the disease can lie dormant for a long as six weeks before beginning to affect someone. The symptoms usually begin with cold-like symptoms and can also include a mild cough or fever. After a week or two, severe coughing can begin. The severe coughing fits can be followed by vomiting. Whooping cough is the most dangerous for babies. In an infant, the cough can be minimal or not present, but the disease can cause babies to stop breathing. The disease is treated with antibiotics. Whooping cough vaccines are given to adults when requested and are part of the normal vaccines children get. You can still get the disease even if you are vaccinated, but the infection is usually much less severe.

Zoo Miami Mourns Loss Of “Jack” The

Komodo Dragon SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (CBSMiami.com) – Zoo keepers and employees at Zoo Miami are mourning the death of its oldest male Komodo dragon. “Jack,” an approximately 24-year-old male Komodo dragon died at Zoo Miami Friday morning. The official cause of death will not be determined until a variety of tests are completed which could take several weeks. Though Jack had appeared to be a bit lethargic in recent days, there were no obvious signs that would indicate a clear cause of death, according to Zoo Com-

munications and Media Relations Director Ron Magill. Jack arrived at the zoo in June of 1995 along with a female named “Lubier” as part of an historic agreement between Zoo Miami (then Miami Metrozoo) and the Taman Safari Park in conjunction with the government of Indonesia. Together, they were the first pair of Komodo dragons to go on public display in the state of Florida and in 1998 made history when they produced 28 eggs of which 27 hatched making it the largest clutch ever produced outside of Indonesia. Komodo dragons are the largest, most powerful species of lizard on earth. Males reach a length of nearly 10 feet and a weight of close to 250 pounds. Komodo dragons are classified as endangered animals. The total population of Komodo dragons is believed to be approximately 6,000. They are found most commonly on the island of Komodo, which is one of the islands that make up the Republic of Indonesia. Komodo dragons are a type of monitor lizard. Jack and Lubier have left an important legacy through their offspring which can be found in zoo collections around the world.

Car Design Make

Car Seat Usage Problematic

Reporting Tim Kephart

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – If you’ve ever tried to install a car seat, you know how frustrating it can be for even the most seasoned parent. According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, there’s a reason for this, cars aren’t being set up properly to make car seat installation easy. The IIHS focused on the system known as Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, or LATCH. The system was originally designed with standard hardware to make car seat installation easier. Even with the LATCH system, the installation of a car seat is still problematic. “Installing a child restraint isn’t always as simple as a couple of clicks and you’re done,” says Anne McCartt, the Institute’s senior vice president for research and one of the report’s authors. “Sometimes parents blame themselves when they struggle with LATCH, but oftentimes the problem lies with the vehicle, not the user.” The IIHS found that only seven vehicles out of 98 analyzed had a LATCH system in the middle of a second-row seat, which is the safest place for children to travel. In addition, the lower anchors for the system were visible on just 36 of the 98 cars studied. IIHS researchers looked at three factors in making their determinations: Depth, Clearance, and Force. Depth referred to how deep in the seat the anchors were. Clearance refers to nothing obstructing access to the anchors. Researchers said force was based on using less than 40 pounds of force during installation. Several 20111 models did meet all of the easy-installation criteria including: • Audi A4 Quattro • Cadillac Escalade • Chevrolet Equinox LT • Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab • Chevrolet Suburban LT • Chevrolet Tahoe LS • Chrysler Town & Country (2010) • Dodge Caliber Mainstreet • Dodge Grand Caravan Crew • Dodge Ram 1500 crew cab • Ford Escape XLT • Ford F-150 SuperCrew Cab • GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab SLE • Honda Pilot EX-L • Kia Sedona LX • Land Rover Range Rover Sport • Mercedes-Benz C300 • Mercedes-Benz E350 • Mitsubishi Eclipse coupe GS • Mitsubishi Lancer ES • Toyota Tacoma extended cab On the other hand, researchers found several 2011 models that didn’t meet any easy-installation criteria including:

• Buick Enclave CX • Chevrolet Impala LT • Dodge Avenger Express • Ford Flex SEL • Ford Taurus Limited • Hyundai Sonata Limited • Toyota Sienna XLE

Eliminate Excessive Sweating With New Device

Reporting Rhiannon Ally

They are some of the hottest fashions, but some of them end up in Megan Marsh’s giveaway or throw away piles. All because of sweat stains and odor. Whether she’s hot or cold it doesn’t matter. It started in her early teens and got worse as she got older. “I have excessive sweating. When I’m out I worry about it, put tissues under my arms,” explained Marsh. She’s tried everything, but nothing worked. For a luxury event planner like Marsh, it’s not only embarrassing, but costly. “I have dry cleaning bills that I would rather do without,” said Marsh. “I’d sometimes rather throw the clothes out than pay for the dry cleaning bill. It definitely doesn’t make you feel confident, not good for dating, not good for job interviews.” It’s normal to sweat a little but for people like Megan who sweat excessively, a condition called hyperhidrosis, it makes people self-conscious, tense, and for many, it’s almost too much to handle. It’s a problem men and women face. “Sweating is one of the most embarrassing things that can happen to you. It gives away your emotional state, whether you’re nervous or upset,” said dermatologist Ava Shamban. In the past, Shamban has used Botox to temporarily fix excessive sweating. But it doesn’t fix the odor. A new treatment is changing that. “miraDry” is a brand new device that destroys not only the sweat glands but the glands that produce the odor in our underarm area,” explained Shamban. Using microwave energy, a form of electromagnetic energy, the device essentially eliminates the sweat glands from the inside out. A special grid is laid out onto the armpit to pinpoint exactly where the sweat glands are. Then the area is numbed. Next the hand piece suctions the skin “up” to bring the glands closer. Then the device essentially heats them up and eliminates them. Since sweat glands don’t grow back, the doctor says results are lasting. “In my opinion, Botox only lasts three to six months at least. And in my opinion, because the exocrine gland is destroyed, this may be permanent,” said Shamban. The process takes two treatments, each about a half-hour. The area may feel sensitive and swollen for up to a week, but Megan says even after one visit, she sees results. “No sweat, no smell,” Megan proclaimed. Now she’s ready to stop sweating the small stuff and those clothes she thought she’d have to give away, “They both always showed sweat and now I can wear them sweat free. Look at how cute they are!” said Marsh.

Pet Plaque Products Might Not Deliver On Promises For pets, just like their owners, problems with their teeth can sometimes signal serious health issues. “Disease can go to the kidneys and the heart and the brain and really cause a lot of damage,” explained Dr. Jan Bellows of the American Veterinary Dental College. Experts say brushing is best, but that can be difficult for many dogs. “It’s kind of a problem where she has such a small mouth. It’s tough to get a brush in there,” said dog owner Lori Macaione. Your vet can help, but dental cleanings can require general anesthesia, which can be expensive. There are a number of dental products available at pet stores to help owners keep their pets teeth healthy, but according to Dr. Bellows, they don’t always deliver on what they promise. “A lot of times the product will say it will do something, but there’s no research that shows it actually will,” he said. The Food and Drug Administration regulates medical claims made on some pet products, but unless the item contains a drug or promises to cure a disease, experts say it is up to consumers to figure out what works and what doesn’t. According to Dr. Bellows, some products designed to remove plaque may actually hurt a dog’s teeth. “Because they’re too hard to chew on,” he said. The Veterinary Oral Health Council is a scientist-run group that reviews research submitted by manufacturers and awards a seal of approval to products that work. “Look on the back of the container and look for a Veterinary Oral Health Council Seal. If you see one it’s a product considered safe and effective,” said Dr. Bellows. “These are products that have been shown to be effective by independent studies, research that shows they will control plaque and will control tartar.” The VOHC reviews research submitted by manufacturers. Only 29 products have the seal so far. So if you’re wondering if your pet needs the proper help for their teeth, the breath will tell you. “If your pet’s breath doesn’t smell like roses, there’s a problem,” said Dr. Bellows. Brushing a dog’s teeth may be tricky, but experts say if you start them young, many will become more tolerant. It is cheaper than using special products or going to the vet and it will keep them healthier.

Hot Dog! Group Wants

“Butt Cancer” Warnings At Marlins Park

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – It’s as American as apple

pie. A beer, a dog, and a baseball game. But at the new Marlins Park, the food police are trying to kill that image, posting a huge billboard aimed at baseball fans linking that all-American hot dog to, no kidding, butt cancer. Piggybacking on the attention the Miami Marlins are getting for their new ballpark, the billboard near the park was paid for by the Physicians Committee or Responsible Medicine (PCRM) which timed the launch of the billboard for Wednesday’s Marlins home opener. The billboard shows a cartoon of a man in a hospital gown, butt hanging out the back, holding a hot dog, with the blunt message “Hot Dogs Cause Butt Cancer.” In more precise terms, the PCRM is referring to colon cancer, not something most baseball fans want to think about as they head to the ballpark to catch a game. But the PCRM said the message is serious, and that processed meats like hot dogs have been linked to colon cancer. “A person who averages a hot dog each day increases his risk of colorectal cancer by 21 percent,” said Susan Levin of the PCRM in a statement. “And

Reporting Dave Game

many people feed their children bacon for breakfast, hot dogs for lunch, and pepperoni pizza for dinner. The cumulative risk of all that processed meat can be enormous.” In fact, the PCRM said during baseball season alone, Americans will chow down 7 billion hot dogs. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, last year 22 million of those were eaten as people watched a ballgame. So why target the Marlins and their fans? According to the PCRM, MiamiDade has one of the highest “butt cancer” rates in the nation, with about 13 hundred people a year diagnosed with the cancer. The group also objects to the Marlins’ “all you can eat” buffet offered at the ballpark, which apparently lets you eat all the hot dogs you want. While the organization wants to get fans thinking, they also want the Marlins to get into the act, by posting warning messages with their cancer alert anywhere in the stadium hot dogs are sold. They sent their request to Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, but as of opening night, there was no sign of the hot dog health alerts at concession stands. And why the term “Butt Cancer” on the billboards? Chalk it up to medical misunderstanding; the organization said it’s research shows more than a third of Americans have no idea where their colon is, lending new meaning to the phrase “can’t find you butt with both hands.”

Cosmetic Procedure Gives Patients The Gift Of

Height

Reporting Jorge Estevez

Can you imagine growing six inches in just three months?

It’s possible, and it’s not a growth spurt. A new medical advancement that is lengthening people’s legs and it’s done right here in South Florida. Two kinds of people get their limbs lengthened; one is often a child who suffers from some form of dwarfism. The other is a perfectly healthy able–bodied, average-sized individual getting a major surgery simply for cosmetic reasons. Recovery for Kenny Zaidner is intense. Watching a session may make you feel uncomfortable but for this South Florida teenager, the pain is worth it. At 14, this is Kenny’s second surgery to grow taller and correct a form of Dwarfism. After the first surgery two years ago, Zaidner grew 4 inches taller. “This is what’s making me grow and going make my life much better,” said Zaidner as he pointed to two devices piercing his skin and screwed into his thigh bone. The device, called fixitures, are attached through the skin to a bone after it’s broken. It literally pulls that bone apart lengthening the leg up to six inches at a time. “You are really changing their lives, improving their function and doing things they were never able to do before,” said Dr. Dror Paley, founder of The Paley Institute. But this medical marvel is now even more miraculous. Dr. Paley, who practices at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, has developed a new way to extend limbs without any exterior device. “I am having leg lengthening done,” said one of the first ever patients undergoing this new kind of procedure. The man doesn’t want to be identified because this healthy able-bodied 30-something is not lengthening for medical reasons, but for purely cosmetic ones. In the end he is looking to gain two inches and go from 5’ 8” tall to 5’ 10”. For that growth, the man underwent surgery to implant a telescopic metal rod, called a Precise Nail, inside his thigh bone. The rod expands inside a person’s body much like an expandable shower curtain. The rods are held in place by two screws at the top and two at the bottom. “It is going to have a very positive consequence on my life,” said the man to CBS 4’s Jorge Estevez. How does it work? A machine provides magnetic energy and causes the gears inside the rod implanted in his thigh bone to stretch. “Without penetrating the skin, just remotely from the outside, we can make it lengthened and shorten at any speed we want,” said Dr. Paley. For seven minutes a day, this procedure grows the leg by a millimeter. The man elected to pay to have the surgery. The procedure costs $85,000. “There is cosmetic procedures done. Women get them done. Guys get them done. It is not any different,” said the man. And while the internal precise nail is available for adults, It has not yet been adapted for children like Zaidner who will be attending physical therapy for another few weeks. Zaidner and his parents are debating a third surgery that will get him to 5’ 6” tall. The goal is to have the internal precise nail be fitted for children but the fact that they are still growing makes it a challenge. The procedure is covered by insurance if in fact the patient suffers from a medical condition like dwarfism.

New Technology At JMH

Helps Fight Potentially

Deadly Aneurysms MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) — A South Florida hospital is treating brain aneurysms with new technology. The treatment is minimally invasive and can help get life back to normal for so many people including Bernadette Fields. Last June doctors told Fields she had a large brain aneurysm, which is the bulging of a blood vessel, behind her eye. “What ran through my mind is that it could break and I could die. That’s what went through my mind,” said Fields. For four months, the 72-year old woman waited in fear for her life because doctors said she could bleed to death if the aneurysm ruptured. Given Bernadette’s family history, she had reason to worry. “Well my father had an aneurysm,” she explained. “He died from one.” Fields got good news from Dr. Ali Sultan, a neurosurgeon at Jackson Memorial Hospital, when he told

her about a new FDA approved Pipeline Embolization Device. It’s a small mesh tube inserted through an artery in the leg and threaded to the area in the brain where the aneurysm is located. “We’re able to treat aneurysms that we’ve never been able to treat in a short amount of time and in a very safe manner,” explained Dr. Sultan. Fields is the first patient to have the procedure performed at Jackson Memorial Hospital. In photos shown at a news conference at JMH Wednesday, the aneurysm was bulging prior to the procedure. After the procedure, the bulge was gone. “What this does is it allows the aneurysm to shrink over time,” said Dr. Sultan. The worry is over for this hardworking waitress. Now she’ll continue living her life to the fullest. “She’s pretty lucky that we’re able to treat this with this type of stent because her particular case was more dangerous than the average aneurysm in that area,” said Dr. Sultan. Jackson is just one of 30 hospitals nationwide now performing this newly approved procedure.

Asperger’s Syndrome A Tough Fight For Autistic MIAMI (CBS4) – Five-year-old Rocco Armao likes to play and have fun like any child his age. Two years ago, he was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, the highest functioning form of autism. “I knew that he wasn’t meeting the milestones that he should be,” said Rocco’s mom, Valerie Armao. “He wasn’t engaging appropriately with the other children.” According to austimsspeaks.com, autism is the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the United States. Five-year-old Rocco began having problems attending birthday parties, going to the park and playing with other children when he was three. “His main preference was to play by himself or be with an adult.” said Armao. The child’s speech, vocabulary and knowledge are well above the level of a kindergartener. All of those are common traits of a child with Aspergers. But he does struggle with sensory issues, fine motor skills and behavior. Rocco told CBS4’s Kara Kostanich his favorite dinosaur is the tyrannosaurus rex. He held his hands in a “U” formation when he said his favorite football team was the University of Miami Hurricanes. After being asked to leave his preschool class permanently, due to behavior associated with Aspergers, Rocco’s Mom enrolled him

into a school that specializes in working with children with autism. He also began treatment and therapy at the Miami Children’s Hospital Dan Marino Outpatient Center. “I feel like a giant weight was lifted off my shoulder,” said Armao. “Now he is at the place he needs to be and getting the helps he needs to excel.” Rocco is not alone in his fight against autism. Statistics show autism now affects one in every 88 children in the United States. But for this young Miami Hurricanes fan, the future looks bright. “There’s nothing he can’t do. I think he is going to excel; I think he is going to surpass everyone expectations,” Armao said.

Social Media

Consumer Savings A Growing Trend MIAMI (CBS4) – A new trend in saving money has people looking at social media for savings. People are hoping on group saving sites and buying coupons for more than just a cheap meal at a new restaurant. They are using the daily deal sites for health and medical related deals. In fact, new numbers show in 2011 consumers spent as much as $230 million on deals in the health and medical category. CBS4 caught up with Stephen Fox saving money at the dentist. “It is definitely worth it because you save a lot of money,” said Stephen Fox. Like so many south Floridians, Fox, a graduate student from St. Thomas law school in Miami Gardens, has medical needs. “I am in that strange window. I am not working full time. I am not on any group health coverage. I am too old to be under my parents,” said Fox who headed to Living Social and found a deal at the Miami Center for Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry. For $35, he received a consultation, exam, x-rays and a teeth cleaning all for an 85 percent savings. “I couldn’t believe it,” said Fox. “I thought it was a great deal and chance to get into see the dentist after a couple of years.” According to the Center’s for Disease Control and Prevention, 46 million Americans under the age of 65 have no health insurance and have to pay out of pocket even for the basic medical attention.

Reporting Jorge Estevez

“They get it at a significantly reduced price and they are able to know exactly where they stand with their mouth and have a clean mouth afterward,” said Dr. Jan Zeigler of Miami Center for Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry. A great idea right? Dealradar.com seems to find the numbers to support that, the daily deal comparison site found an increase in medical related deals in 2011 • Eye care went from 82 to 207 in 2011. • Skin treatment started at 298 and went to 1393 in 2011 • Dental grew from 764 to 4,429. • Weight Loss started 2011 at 80 and grew to 2888. South Florida daily deal Expert Natalie McNeal, who operates her site www.thefrugalista.com shared a warning to keep you from falling into the daily deal trap. “These are great deals but you need to watch out because you can end up spending so much money on things you don’t need that it defeats the purpose and you end up spending more money than saving,” said McNeal. For Dr Zeigler, the idea behind his deal was to

bring a smile to his patients “We’re in some very challenging times. I figured it was my opportunity to give back to the community,” said Dr. Zeigler whose idea is really making a difference. “I just think it is a great opportunity for people like me who are on the fringe,” Fox said. “And they don’t normally put their dental health on the highest priority but it is something important you should take care of.”

“Fifty Shades Of Grey”

Turning Women Red Reporting Lisa Petrillo

It’s the book that is sweeping the nation, with admirers calling the tome “Mommy Porn.” “Fifty Shades of Grey,” the first of a trilogy by novice writer E.L. James has even the most conservative women blushing. At a recent women’s book club in Miami, the group discussed the book. “I think they call it erotica,” book club member Andee Holland. “This is our first sexual book, and I’ve enjoyed it. It’s filled with a lot of things, not only sex but yes, it’s filled to the rim with sex.” The book centers on Anastasia Steel, a naive college student who is seduced by a rich and powerful

entrepreneur named Christian Grey. Grey tries to persuade Steele to allow complete control over her life, in and out of the bedroom. It’s the dominant man over the submissive woman, and believe it or not, women are liking that concept. “What is it about this books that’s grabbing women all over the country? “ said CBS4’s Lisa Petrillo. “I think it’s the fantasy, because it’s not what our normal lives are. At least I’m not that adventurous,” said book club member JoAnn Hilderbrandt. “It’s different and foreign and brave and fun and all of the above.” Many women are giving the book to their husbands

to read Maria Fordin is a book club member and psychotherapist who says the paths of arousal are different for men and women. Women enjoy the idea of something a “little” dangerous. “Anxiety tends to have an arousal component to it, so arousal takes place because there’s mystery and fear so when you’re reading it. You can step back and imagine. That kind of arousal and fear they go together actually” said Fordin. And like many successful books, it’s been announced to no one’s surprise that a major motion picture about the Fifty Shades trilogy will be made.

Teen Drug, Alcohol Use

Can Be Influenced By Parents FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – Most parents don’t realize that kids under 21 still consider mom and dad to be the greatest influence in their lives. Yet, far too many of these kids also say their parents haven’t talked to them about alcohol and other drugs. They also report that they drink and use other drugs at someone else’s home. Sadly, too many say they had their first drink at home with mom or dad. It isn’t a matter of “if” our kids will be offered drugs, it’s a matter of “when” and “who” will be their source of reference on these issues. Parents it’s our job to prepare them. Our kids are watching what we do and listening to what we say. And, research tells us that the longer we delay that first use, the greater the chances that they will not experience a serious

addiction issue throughout their lives. We know it’s not easy, but knowing that parents continue to be the #1 influence in their children’s lives is important. It can seem overwhelming, but websites like www.timetotalk.org can quickly bring parents up-to-speed on the latest trends. Initiatives like Family Day www.casafamilyday.org remind us all of the importance of the dinner table to foster important and continuous conversation between all family members and a great way to keep track of what is going on in our kids’ lives. And, please remember that it’s not ok to allow underage drinking and other drug use in your home. The laws in the State of Florida say it’s not ok and have established penalties www.myfcap.org. Raising

kids who make the choice NOT to use alcohol or other drugs, isn’t easy, but many parents are doing it successfully! Join the growing number of parents working towards a drug-free community for our kids!
