Fake foods such as candy bars, fish, cheese and tomato sauce are just a few of the items confiscated by Interpol police. These products could have ended up on American dinner tables, according to Dr. John Spink, Associate Director of the AntiCounterfeiting and Product Protection Program at Michigan State University. “Consumers are being cheated.”
Here in the U.S., Food and Drug Administration agents are also on the hunt for counterfeit foods and ingredients. They’ve seized everything from fake olive oil to phony, pricey wine… all of which the FDA agents insisted are counterfeit. “We think we’re buying a high value or specific type of product and the bad guys have swapped it out with something that’s inferior,” explained Dr. Spink. The problem is so widespread, that a national database was recently created to try to track it. The key word here is “try.” That’s because it’s hard to catch during production and shipping. And once it makes it to market, consumers don’t realize they’ve been ripped off, unless they get sick. “Food adulteration is designed to not be detected. So, frequently adulterers do not use fake ingredients that would cause immediate health problems.” In a new study, Dr. John Spink crunched the database to find the top fakes. 16% involved olive oil: often diluted with cheaper oils. 14% involved milk found to be watered down. 7% was adulterated honey: intentionally mixed with sugar and corn syrups. 2-4% involved fruit juice, watered down or diluted with other types of juice. Not only are you not getting what you paid for but it could be downright dangerous. “The bad guys aren’t following good manufacturing practices. There’s such a risk for contamination that can be very lethal,” said Dr. Spink. The most recent case involved vodka laced with methanol which left some British college students with permanent vision damage. Many legitimate companies are now hiring security firms to monitor their products. “We’ve unfortunately found counterfeits of pretty much any product that you can think of,” said Tara Steketee of OpSec Security. Something that just popped up recently, garden variety tomatoes being marketed as the expensive heirloom ones. Consumers we talked to were shocked. “It could really hurt someone,” said one man. One woman said, “Very concerning, to me as a mom.” Another indicated that, “It would be overwhelming to me to try to police that.” And she’s right. For every port investigators inspect and each case police crack, experts know there’s always more. “There’s not ten of these bad guys in the world and we can go arrest 8 of them. There’s a near infinite number of fraudsters and there’s a near infinite type of fraud,” Dr. Spink pointed out. If you suspect you’ve purchased a fake food or counterfeit product, take it back where you bought it and demand a refund. You can also report fake foods to the FDA or the Florida Department of Agriculture.

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – If you have received a text message claiming you have won
a $1000 Walmart gift card, it’s not a store promo—it’s part of the latest identity scam. Some of the most active ways ID thieves are trying to scam your identity are coming through as text messages from your phones, iPads or other digital devices. It’s called “smishing,” after the text’s SMS service capabilities and the older “phishing” scams that have been around for years using regular e-mail. The latest one comes into your text service like this: “Dear Walmart shopper, you have just won a $1000 Walmart gift card. Click here to claim your gift”. Cyber-fraud Investigator James Porter of the Secret Service’s Miami Field Office said this attempted ID theft is sweeping the country. Porter said it’s an innocent looking message that could easily be mistaken for a great deal. “I’m sure many people when they’ve receive a text message like this assume they have free money coming their way,” he said. After numerous calls from its customers, Walmart recently posted an extensive warning on its internet site that the gift card text was indeed a scam. The Secret Service warned this kind of high-tech fraud is aimed at getting customers personal ID and banking information. “Once a victim provides that type of information they then become subject to identity theft or possibly having your entire bank account taken from you,” Porter said. The original website the text linked the message to “claim your gift card” has been taken down; investigators expect a new one to pop up any day now.
That’s why they warn consumers to not respond to any unsolicited e-mails, text messages or phone calls seeking your confidential information. Something Extra:
Bye-Bye
Bookstores? Reporting Antonio Mora
Are we nearing the end of the book as we know it? This week, numbers show that for the first time, E-books outsold hardcover books in the first quarter of this year. And it wasn’t even close. The Association of American Publishers reports adult E-book sales soared more than 28% to $282 million, while adult hardbacks sold just under $230 million. The silver lining for hardback lovers is that sales were up for them as well. Real books aren’t going to disappear yet. Paperbacks still sell more than E-books, but paperback sales have plunged and the gap is narrowing. For booklovers, it’s the stuff of nightmares to think of a world without libraries or bookstores. And there are millions out there who refuse to make the switch. Blogger Perez Hilton amusingly wrote that he won’t until they come up with an iPad cover that smells like a new book. I love that my house is full of bookshelves and a couple of thousand books. But I’ve become part of the problem, now reading E-books far more than anything else. They are the wave of the future, but I hope we don’t ever fully leave the past behind.

MIAMI (CBS4) – Fran Lixie told CBS4’s Chief Consumer Investigator Al Sunshine, that it all started with a knock on the door about two years ago. A salesman from “State Energy Conservation” asked what the Cooper City family was paying for their monthly electric bill. The retired Marine said it ran about $150 to $200 over the summer. That’s when the salesman told Lixie, ”He said it could bring our electric bills down below that $150…ah, to about $100 he told us…it could bring our bills down to about $100 a month.” How’d the company say it would cut his electric bills? For $1,500, they’d install a Kvar power optimizer. The Kvar unit is promoted as a “power factor optimizer” that makes electric motors run more efficiently, using less electricity. To make the deal even better, Fran was told he could finance the bill with no payments for a full year. Shortly after signing the contract, the family says a local electrician arrived to wire up their Kvar energy-saving box. Fran says it didn’t cut his bill. “It hasn’t done anything, all it does it stay up there and leave the little light on,” said Lixie. Fran even found his electric bills are even higher now than before the Kvar was installed. What about that “Year of no payments?” He told Sunshine that shortly after the box arrived, so too did the bills. After several harassing phone calls from the finance company, he finally told them the energy saver didn’t work and he wasn’t paying for it. Fran remembered the call. “They said you signed, you got a bill and we don’t, we already gave the money to the company, State Energy.” State Energy Conservation bases its’ local offices in a Ft. Lauderdale
business plaza. Lou Banos, a salesman for the company, told Sunshine when he showed up at the office of the company, that a Kvar box saves him money every month and he insisted its a money saver for his customer too. “I’ve cut people’s bills in half, reducing their bills,” explained Banos. He said the company never promoted savings of 50%… only up to 25%. And Kvar’s own website advertises savings of just 6 to 10% for regular residential customers. What about cutting Fran’s electric bill way down to just $100 a month? Banos explained, “I don’t know who that gentleman was, but we have never told anybody to say such a thing. I it’s stated right here..up to 25%. To tell someone it might, it might save them 10% on their bill, kind of under-promising with what the manufacturer is suggesting. We don’t make this up.” Kvar’s boss says the Lixie’s were “absolutely duped” because the energy savers retail for about $400 and cost about another $100 to install. He’s now in contact with the family to figure out why the Kvar box didn’t save them any money. The head of State Energy Conservation said he’ll give the family a refund and remove the Kvar box, a product he told Sunshine, they don’t sell any more. The family did finally get its’ money back. Both State Energy Conservation and Kvars’ manufacturer said they have plenty of satisfied customers. While Kvar insisted it’s energy saver can cut monthly residential electric bills by about 6 to 10%, FP&L says those kind of power modifiers don’t work. It says the best way of saving money on electric bills is turning down your hot water heater so it works less and turning up your a-c thermostat so it doesn’t use as much electricity.

AAA’s Top Picks
For Safe Cars For Teens Fret not parents, the American Automobile Association has made a short list that narrows down safe car choices for teens without having to break the piggy bank.
For most teens, color, speed and style rank higher than safety on the list of wants when a new car is in mind. “Unfortunately, teens have the highest crash rate of any group in the United States. When purchasing a new or used vehicle, safety features should be top of mind,” said John Pecchio, manager, AAA Traffic Safety, The Auto Club Group. Each year the auto group comes out with a list of the safest cars on road for teens. This year they’ve selected: Volkswagen Golf/Rabbit TDI: Roomy and flexible despite its compact exterior dimensions, these hatchbacks have precise handling and stability control. Ford Focus: The latest models give parents the MyKey feature, which limits speed, radio volume and prevent teens from turning off safety systems. Honda Civic: A perennial and parental favorite, the Honda Civic offers solid handling, a stout structure, easy maneuvering and good fuel economy. When shopping around, do note model types, as the Si model may be too powerful for younger drivers. Hyundai Sonata (2011+): Handling is secure and the ride is comfortable. Ford Fusion: With secure handling and a comfortable ride, newer models have optional cross traffic alert feature, which makes backing out of a parking space safer. Kia Sportage: A midsize crossover utility vehicle is economical, dependable and comes with a wide range of safety features.

World’s First Of Its Kind Surgery Saves Miami Girl’s Life To see 20-month old Lyna Gonzalez, you would think she’s just like every other toddler at that age – vibrant and energetic.
“She’s perfectly normal, thank God,” said mother Tammy. But it wasn’t always that way. During her pregnancy, Gonzalez’s doctors discovered a benign tumor the size of a tennis ball growing on her unborn baby’s mouth. Doctors told Tammy there was little chance her daughter would survive birth – and if she did, she would require an immediate tracheotomy in order to breath and have multiple surgeries thereafter. “It’s the most horrible feeling you could ever image; physically, emotionally, mentally,” said Gonzalez. After a lot research and heart ache, Tammy sought help from University of Miami/Jackson Memorial fetal surgeon Ruben Quintero. Quintero, a pioneer in fetal medicine, has treated many birth defects and high risk conditions while the baby is still in the womb. “The concern with these tumors is they grow very rapidly, the cause bleeding which leads to the death of the baby,” said Quintero. In May 2010, Quintero and Dr. Eftichia Kontopoulos operated on
Tammy’s baby in utero. Using an endoscope guided by ultrasound they performed a first of its kind surgery and removed the tumor from the fetus’ mouth. “This was an opportunity to expand the field we have developed, to treat birth defects in utero,” said Quintero. The surgery was performed in the 17th week of the pregnancy and Tammy, who was under local anesthesia, was awake during the procedure. “I could see it floating down,” said Gonzalez. “It was like this huge weight had been lifted off. It just floated away and I could see her face.” Quintero said these types of oral tumors develop in 1 and 100,000 pregnancies. On October 1, 2010, Leyna Mykaella Gonzalez was born healthy, weighing 8 pounds, 1 ounce. The only sign of the surgery is a tiny scar on her mouth. This case was recently published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology as the first of its kind.

Tapping Away Anxiety and Stress Reporting Vanessa Borge

Christine Cramer used to suffer from such severe anxiety that she was unable to perform simple tasks such as doing her taxes or driving over bridges. “I became paralyzed with fear,” said Christine. Brittany Watkins suffered from emotional food cravings that were ruining her life. “Every time I was stressed or emotional or upset I would always look for sweets to make me feel better,” Watkins said. But now both women say they’re living free of their fears, thanks to an alternative psychotherapy treatment called EFT, which stands for ”emotional freedom technique… also known as “tapping.” The practice involves stimulating certain accupressure points on the body while you focus on what’s stressing you out. It can be done with the aid of a therapist or alone during a moment of anxiety. “It tells your body that the stressful thought you’re having isn’t a real threat to your survival. And once you break the association in your mind between the stressful thought and the fight or flight response one time, it stays broken,” explained Dawson Church, PhD Research Director of the Foundation for Epi Genetic Medicine. EFT was introduced in the 1990s, but recently its popularity has surged. This year, more than half-a-million people signed up for the world tapping summit. “I believe within a few years we’ll see it in many hospitals, many mental health clinics,” declared Church. But the question remains: does it work? Church and fellow tapping practitioners have published many small-scale studies showing positive results.
Like this one, to be published in the October Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, that found stress hormone levels dropped 24% after tapping. No drop was found in the control group. “So their internal stress biochemistry changed as their emotional state changed as well,” explained Church. But not all researchers are convinced. a study out of Canada found that while tapping accupressure points did show a significant decrease in anxiety and fear, tapping other parts of the body, or even a doll, offered similar results. The American Psychological Association says many more large-scale, peerreviewed studies must be performed. “Has this tapping therapy been proven effective?” we asked. “We don’t think so at this point,” said Rhea Farberman Executive Director for Public and Member Communications American Psychological Association. But Brittany and Christine say they’ve found their answers and are grateful that tapping has given them a new lease on life. “Rather than popping a pill, we can tap a couple of accupressure points and immediately neutralize any negative, negative symptom we have,” said Brittany. “That’s amazing!” The APA suggests sufferers look into proven forms of psychotherapy, such as contacting a mental health professional with proper training. They do not consider EFT a good alternative.

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) –
The last day of school students walked out ready to enjoy their summer vacation. While the children are getting over the excitement of the end of classes, school officials are already thinking of next year and new changes that will be implemented. “If fundraising had been done in the past on items that were not supposed to be sold like carbonated beverages or candy it just can’t occur on school campus or one hour after school lets out,” said Penny Parham with the Department of Food and Nutrition of MDCPS. In the past this new rule was recommended, but now it will be enforced. Under the Wellness Policy, bake sales will still be allowed but what is sold must comply with the guidelines. For example, sugary snacks will be replaced by trail mix and original chips with baked ones. CBS 4’s Marybel Rodriguez spoke with students and parents from Everglades K-8 who were torn on the policy. While some said they can understand where they are coming from, others feel it will affect them financially. “It would be difficult because a lot of our clubs like cheerleading and basketball use that method to get money,” said Zoey Penalver. Another change that will be seen, there will no longer be unhealthy snacks or drinks in the teachers vending machines. “Those vending machines will also follow the guidelines” said Parham. A Blue Light
Warning For The
Sleep Deprived
Mommy blogger Titania Jordan tosses and turns for hours each night, and she thinks she knows why.
“From about 7 PM ’til midnight, I am in front of a screen. I’m on the computer, I’m on my mobile device,” said Jordan. Titania is on to something. Researchers, including Harvard University’s Dr. Steven Lockley, have long known that light suppresses melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep. But nowadays, we’re flooding with light, long after the sun sets, whether we’re texting, emailing or catching up on TV. Dr. Steven Lockley is the author of “Sleep: A Very Short Introduction. ”It’s a very unnatural thing for us to do, and so when we expose ourselves to light at night, we tell the brain that it’s daytime.” That makes it harder to catch some Z’s and shifts our internal body clock or circadian rhythm. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has said it’s important to raise a red flag about blue wave lengths… the kind emitted by energy-efficient light bulbs and electronic gadgets. “We know that blue light has the greatest propensity to alter circadian rhythms, and yet now-a-days it seems that blue is the color du jour,” said Dr. Nathaniel Watson of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. According to a poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation Sleep in America in 2011.. 95% of Americans use electronics a few nights a week within an hour before bed. Dr. Lockley says even dim light can be problematic. ”We’ve done a number of studies to show that light levels that you would be normally exposed to in the home in the evening, for example from a bedside lamp, are very easily capable of shifting the body clock.” And research has shown our health may be at risk. Studies have linked
REPORTING Marybel Rodriguez blue light and poor sleep to depression, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular problems. Also, ”Shift workers have been found to have about a 50% to 60% increased risk of cancer, particularly breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men,” said Lockley. What’s a gadget addict to do? Have a regular bedtime routine. Sleep in a cool, dark room. And, most importantly, power down early… ideally two to three hours before bed. “If you must have screen time before going to bed then limiting the amount of light that’s emitted from the screen would be helpful, so you can turn down the brightness,” explained Dr. Nathaniel Watson with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Titania cut back on screen time, and she says the results were eye-opening. “It was fabulous! I didn’t go to sleep right away, but I found myself feeling much more relaxed,” said Jordan. Exposing yourself to lots of bright light during the day can also help. Dr. Lockley explained how it keeps you alert and helps your body clock reset each night.

Salt
The Big
Shake Up MIAMI (CBSmiami.com)
REPORTING Cynthia Demos
For health officials, salt is seen as a public enemy. “Many Americans don’t know that unseen salt drives up blood pressure.”
But is salt as dangerous as we think? One science journalist recently made bold claims in a New York Times Opinion piece, which questioned the truth behind what we’ve been told about salt. “Our obsession with salt is misguided. It’s the wrong suspect. The crime is hypertension, heart disease, strokes premature deaths. Our salt consumption is not the issue,” declared Gary Taubes. Taubes isn’t a scientist but a writer who does independent research challenging nutritional science. He’s the author of, “Why We Get Fat.” But his questions aren’t the first to blur the picture on salt, questions were raised as recently as 2011. The Journal of the American Medical Association published a study done in Belgium which found the opposite of what doctors have been telling us for decades; that low salt intake can actually increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Doctors from the CDC to Harvard dismissed the research as flawed but Taubes said studies like that shouldn’t be ignored. “Did we misjudge salt? Not at all,” said Dr. Darwin LaBarthe. LaBarthe is a former Director of the Centers for Disease Control’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention. He said he doesn’t believe contradictory research is ignored. “They simply are a minor part of a vast body of evidence from studies all over the world that have established the very close link between the amount of
intake in everyday and our levels of blood pressure, consequently, the risks of strokes, heart attacks, dementia and other cardiovascular complications,” said LaBarthe. The CDC recommends that adults should consume no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. That’s about a teaspoon. That recommended number is smaller, 1,500 milligrams per day for people 51 or older, African-Americans or those with existing health issues. Some question whether those guidelines should be so broad. One preventative cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic said individuals have varying sensitivity levels to sodium. He believes the true role of salt and it’s health impact is incomplete. “But I think we do know with fairly good certainty is that the extremes of salt intake, very low intake and very high intake may be harmful for the general public.”

Toxic Treat
Warning For Dog Owners Reporting Al Sunshine
Chancy, a 10-year old Pug… dead from kidney failure. Teri, dead from kidney failure. 9-year old Sampson, a Fox Terrier exactly the same. And Roja also died from kidney failure. Keith Graves was Roja’s owner. “The vet said she was suffering from kidney failure and that she had a toxin in her kidney.” What do all these dogs have in common? They all ate Waggin Train Chicken Jerkey treats.
Waggin Train is made in China by Nestle Purina. The company insists its products are safe. But according to the owners of the dogs that ate the Waggin Train Chicken Jerkey Treats, they all displayed similar symptoms: lack of appetite, lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. Candace Thaxton was Chancey’s owner. “Chancey was one of the friendliest dogs.” After Candace lost her beloved Pug, she got a new puppy, a mixed breed named Penny. Candace soon began feeding Penny Waggin Train Jerky Treats and suddenly Penny was vomiting just like Chancey had before dying. “We took the puppy into the vet the next morning and the results came back that the puppy was in kidney failure,” said Candace. Penny recovered, as did Sophie, who first got sick on a Saturday. Her owner stopped giving her the chicken jerky treats for two days… then started doling them out again. “On Monday she started the lethargy and vomiting and the diarrhea all over again.” Since 2007, the Food and Drug Administration has been actively investigating illnesses associated with chicken jerky treats made in China. The latest warning came in November of 2011. At that time, only 70 complaints had been filed. Today, the FDA reports nearly 1,000 such reports. That spike prompted the FDA to send inspectors to China. So far, their report has not been made public. The FDA can only say that “no specific products have
been recalled because a definitive cause has not been determined.” Although dogs have fallen ill and even died all across the country… “I’m devastated because I know it came from my hand. I fed him the treat that killed him,” said Sampson’s owner, Terry Safranek. … we discovered that the product remains on local store shelves. “I hope people get rid of them,” said Bonnie Rohn, Teri’s owner. “I say shame on the pet stores and the companies that are having them made in China,” exclaimed Sophie’s owner, Sandi Stephens. Dr. Shannon Jordan, a veterinarian, says don’t wait for an official recall. “If you have a bag in your cupboard… throw it out.” And don’t wait to get your dog help. “You may start off with simple signs of not eating and vomiting and it may progress to the point where we can’t… those kidneys can’t repair themselves,” said Jordan. There are chicken jerky treats that are made in the USA, so read the packaging carefully if the “MADE IN CHINA” label is one you want to avoid. Also, an online campaign is collecting signatures on a petition to demand the Chinese products be recalled.

Publix To Add Space For More Craft Beers Craft beers are fun, trendy, flavorful and growing in popularity among the masses. People who love to drink them will travel miles to get their favorite microbrew for flavors ranging from peach to pizza. In some neighborhoods, finding a good craft beer may be as easy as going to the local Publix supermarket. The Lakeland based grocer wants to satisfy their customer desires with a larger selection of microbrews. Although the change is not company-wide, new stores and remodeled stores will make more space for microbrews. According to TheLedger.com, Publix spokeswoman, Shannon Patten said this about the addition, “As we develop new store prototypes, or if we remodel an existing store, we are dedicating a larger section for beer. It’s a very important category for us.” Some stores already have sections devoted to craft and seasonal beers. For more information contact your local Publix Super Market.

Mediterranean
Divine French Dining With Italian Twist
Reporting Lisa Petrillo
South Floridians love to eat out. There are plenty of remarkable restaurants where diners can find delicious deals but there are also exceptional eateries that bring in the crowds despite sometimes hefty prices. One of those restaurants is nestled in the heart of South Beach at 23rd Street off Collins Avenue. Villa Azur Restaurant and Lounge is a pleasure to the palette as well as the eyes. The romantic decor is a mixture of both antique and modern motifs. The bar is engaging and relaxing and the outdoor patio area gives customers the feeling of being in a garden somewhere in the French countryside. “That was the goal to get you to feel like you’re in Europe. As soon as you come in, you feel out of Miami. People are so surprised. They love it,” said owner Michael Martin. Martin is one of three owners of Villa Azur, along with restaurateur Jean Phillip Bernard and actor Olivier Martinez, also known as Halle Berry’s guy. The restaurant opened last March to rave reviews. The menu is mostly French Mediterranean prepared with an Italian twist. Entrees average in the mid $30′s price range with classic Italian meals like Morel Mushroom Rigatoni and the signature French dish Bouillabaisse. “We did it Mediterranean. We didn’t want it just be French food. It’s more Italian, Provencal, to have more choices for people to come here. We want them to have a taste of Europe when they come here,” explained Martin. Executive Chef Michael Benza served CBS4’s Lisa Petrillo one of his favorite dishes; Italian beef tartar followed by that Bouillabaisse and then some pasta. “Magnifique,” exclaimed Petrillo. Villa Azur is open 7 days a week. For more info: www.Villaazurmiami.com.

Adopt
Puppies & Kittens In Miami

cbs4 Newspaper
For Information Call: 305.477.1699
Everyone falls victim to puppy love and kitty cuteness from time to time, but only on rare occasions do potential pet owners succumb and commit to a furry forever family. When it’s time to do it, to find your family’s next fur baby, it’s time to adopt. Finding the right agency doesn’t have to be a hardfought search; these are Miami’s best pet adoption options, full of furry fellas ripe for the pickin’.
Humane Society of Greater Miami Soffer and Fine Adoption Center North Miami Beach, FL - www.humanesocietymiami.org
The Humane Society is a well-known household name for a reason. For one, you can adopt a puppy or kitten for a nominal fee that includes vaccinations, spay or neuter, a microchip and a bag of dog food. Puppies also get a dog tag included in the price. The only requirement to adopt these cuddly creatures is a valid I.D. and a copy of your rental lease, if you are a renter.
Miami-Dade County Animal Services
Miami, FL - www.miamidade.gov Miami-Dade County Animal Services is home to myriad abandoned and homeless animals. Unlike the Humane Society, these loveable creatures face the possibility of euthanasia. That’s why this is the perfect place to adopt a puppy or a kitten. Your adoption fee includes vaccinations, a microchip, a tag for puppies and that warm fuzzy feeling that comes with saving a life. Potential owners must bring a valid I.D. and proof of residence.
Friends Forever Rescue
Miami, FL - www.friendsforeverrescue.com Friends Forever Rescue specializes in adopting dogs. All of its dogs are rescues, and it hosts a virtual shelter that allows you to find the perfect pet online, or go to PetSmart on Saturday and Petco on Sunday to see the puppies in person. If you’re looking for kittens, it also has a limited selection of felines. Adoption requirements include mailing or faxing an application from its website, and paying an adoption fee in cash or check only. All pets are spayed or neutered.
Dalmatian Rescue, Inc. and Pets at Risk Rescue
North Miami Beach, FL - www.dalmationrescue.com Pets at Risk Rescue, like many pet adoption agencies, does not have a physical address. Its adoptees are taken care of through a network of foster care volunteers. Potential owners need only go to its website to view the dogs up for adoption. Complete an application its website, fax vaccination records of your current pets, submit to a home visit, pay a fee, and sign the adoption agreement. The fee includes vaccinations, spay or neuter, and your pet will already be house trained. Cat and dog breeds in addition to dalmatians are available through the Pets at Risk Rescue program under Dalmatian Rescue Inc.
The Cat Network
Miami, FL - www.thecatnetwork.org The Cat Network is an ASPCA-affiliated company that also utilizes a network of volunteers and foster homes instead of housing cats in a shelter. You can choose from an array of cats and kittens online knowing this organization works hard to save cats through nonlethal population control, such as sterilization, instead of euthanasia. Your adoption fee includes deworming, vaccinations and spay/neuter. Find the adoption application on its website and rescue one of more than 7,000 cats adopted through the group since 1995. Click here for its adoptable dogs as well.

Healthy Food Truck
Rolls Into Miami-Dade County Public Schools Reporting Marybel Rodriguez
School may be out but Miami Dade County Public Schools want to let students know they are not forgotten: their very first food truck
is rolling into schools near you. “We thought it should be a neat idea to provide a truck with fresh made food to our students and see what happens,” said Carol Chong, Director of Food and Menu Management with MDCPS. The food truck has been visiting two high schools in Miami-Dade County. Chong said the response has been great. “The students love it,” said Chong. During the school year many students receive free or reduced lunch, that is why Chong says they came up with their kitchen on wheel a way of getting fresh and healthy food out to the students. The menu always varies, food truck serves from cheese burgers to pork sandwiches with a salad, fruit, milk or juice and best of all the meals are free. “We love it many students will now be able to eat” said Arlenee Arrechea, a student at Miami Springs Senior High School. Several sponsors are providing the food including The Schwan Food Company. “We didn’t think twice about it we thought it was a great idea and wanted to be a part of it,” said Schwan Food’s Joe Adour. The free lunches are not only given to students attending summer school or practicing sports, any child who is under 18 and sees the food truck can stop and get a free lunch. During the summer the food truck will be visiting two Miami Dade County Public High Schools. For a complete list of where the food truck will be visit their website www.nutrition.dadeschools.net.

Is
Camping
The Right Vacation For You And Your Family?
cbs4 Newspaper
45
For Information Call: 305.477.1699
In these times of financial strain, screen-time overload and general family fragmentation, camping has become the go-to vacation plan for many. Tent, trailer or lodge camping can provide lasting memories and family bonding at a surprisingly affordable price. But before jumping on the camping bandwagon this summer, take a good look at your family and ask yourself “are we — or can we be — a camping family?” Nothing is more frustrating than when good intentions and exciting plans result in a miserable or simply disappointing experience.
Things to consider:
Do you mind getting dirty? If you need to bathe every day or have your kids clean and sparkly at all times, camping may not be for you. Do you require fancy accommodations, with air conditioning and cable TV, and a constant connection to the world? If Hilton hotels are your idea of slumming it, camping may not be for you. Do you need gourmet meals, prepared and served by someone else, as a part of your vacation? If cooking over a gas stove or open flame seems more annoying than relaxing, camping may not be for you. Now that you are ready to take the camping plunge, let’s look at the who, what, where, when and why of camping. Who? You can really bring almost anyone camping, as long as you have room and the proper equipment. Newborns aren’t be the best candidates, however, as they require more than their fair share of supplies and attention. And tending to them by the glow of a flashlight is difficult. But kids young and old, who don’t necessarily depend on a strict routine, will love the novelty and adventure of camping. It’s also a great way to stage family reunions on a budget. Many parks and campgrounds have facilities for larger groups. People can go their own way and meet up with others when they feel like it. People get to see each other without the family overload. What? As in, what to bring. Like any other vacation, camping requires efficient packing. It’s important to bring all the necessities without overpacking. You’ll need food, of course, and somewhere to put it. Dry goods and anything that can be grilled are the easiest (don’t forget the makings for s’mores). A cooler and
plastic bins work great for storage, and they can be stowed in the car trunk so wildlife doesn’t indulge in your next meal. Look up the weather where you’ll be and bring along the clothing layers you’ll need to be comfortable. Have enough for numerous changes, especially for the kids who will inevitably get dirty. You’ll need somewhere to sleep, whether that be a tent or a trailer or, in a pinch, the backseat of a car. Accommodations will depend on just how close your family wants to be to each other. Camping supplies will also vary from family to family, but there are a few constants. Never go camping without a first aid kit, sunscreen and bug repellant. A few games can be helpful too, for evenings and when it rains. Where? Camping is an extremely versatile vacation. Your family can go to the beach. Your family can go to the mountains. Your family can visit historic sites and natural settings all over this great country of ours. Big cities are perhaps the only destinations not convenient to affordable camping. There are state and national parks with campsites, not to mention private campgrounds, pretty much everywhere. Figure out where you want to go and what you want to do, and then research camping facilities nearby. But plan way ahead since popular destinations, like national parks, often fill up months before camping season begins. When? Warm weather is the best time for camping with the kids. The amount of supplies is enough without the added heavy clothing. And with warm weather comes all the outdoor activities that make summer so much fun. If you don’t mind sleeping bags and extra clothing, late fall is also a beautiful time for camping. The parks are less crowded, and the foliage can be spectacular. Why? That’s easy! Camping is fun and affordable, giving everyone a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life and creating lasting family memories. Just be sure to bring your camera. Enjoy your trip!

Read The Fine Print:
Drugs and Hair Loss Reporting Cynthia Demos Lovely locks, the kind of pretty, full hair that Jennifer Lopez has, has women spending an endless amount of time and money to make their hair look nice. So you can imagine how devastating something like near baldness would be. “I lost probably over two-thirds of my hair in a six, seventh month period,” said one woman who did not want to be identified. Her type of dramatic hair loss can be caused by prescription drugs. “I would have done anything to get my hair back. But then my health was suffering,” she explained. Many women turn to wig stores for help. One tried giving up her medication to save her hair. But it didn’t work, and she had to go back on her pills. “All the medications caused me all the problems,” she said. According to another anonymous patient, “There’s no such thing as no side effects. Everything that you take, they can fix one thing and something else goes wrong.” These are not powerful drugs like those used in chemotherapy known to cause hair loss. These are common medications that millions of people take every day for all kinds of health problems, drugs like antibiotics, antidepressants, cholesterol, and blood pressure drugs. Some women blame hormone therapy for their hair loss. “It’s like a stab in my heart,” confessed one of the women. Mary Speciale said her hair started falling out after hip replacement surgery 18-months ago. “I took some of the medications post-operatively and no one told me they could cause hair loss.” “We don’t know if it’s due to the surgery itself or due to medication she got for anesthesia. Sometimes they’re given medications during surgery so it’s very difficult to pinpoint,” explained Dr. Richard Mizuguchi, Director of Hair Loss and Restoration Institute. As he examined Mary’s hair he noted, “You are shedding a little bit.” “Had I known then what I know now, I would have done some things differently, perhaps,” Mary admitted.

Empty Nest Divorce Rate Rising
Reporting Cynthia Demos
Debbie Jenkins thought she’d be married forever. But it wasn’t meant to be.
“I had my family and my children to help me through it,” she said. The 52-year-old mother divorced her husband after two decades of marriage. “Emotionally, physically we just couldn’t relate to each other anymore,” explained Jenkins. “We have to accept things as they are, not as you wish them to be,” insisted fifty something Thatia Cuchera. She ended her marriage last year. “I decided to take the risk on myself and take a chance on myself,” Cuchera said. These women have plenty of company. Since 1990 the divorce rate has doubled to 1 in 4 for couples over age 50. And researchers found after age 40 it’s often the wife who wants the divorce. “People are no longer willing to compromise to live an unhappy life just for the sake of a marriage,” said divorce attorney Barry Wineberger. He also explained how important longevity is to this trend. “We are all living longer. Spending four decades, five decades, six decades with the same person is becoming more difficult.” Rachel Sussmen counsels couples and says there are other reasons. “Women in their 40′s and 50′s and 60′s feel very youthful, And if you’re in a marriage that your needs aren’t being met we have choices today.” Researchers found this generation of women has more financial independence. And baby boomers put an emphasis on individual happiness. Should you live 2 people unhappily or as roommates under the same roof? Why should you have to live that way? Financial adviser Jeff Landers cautioned that splitting up later in life can be complicated. “With timing, issues become very, very critically important, because people who are in their fifties or maybe early sixties when timing is right around the corner,” said Landers. But for these new divorce’s, it’s time to enjoy their independence “I was there to take care of everybody’s needs and I just feel like it’s my time now.” What really has changed is what’s inside of me and I feel so much more confident and so much more sure of myself.”

How To
Live To 100
If you want to make it to 100, get some sleep! New research from United Healthcare studied baby boomers and centenarians asking the latter about their secrets to aging success. The biggest difference between the old and the not-so-old: the centenarians get a lot more sleep. 71% of them reported getting eight hours or more of sleep a night. Only 38% per cent of baby boomers do. There’s also a bit of a gap when it comes to diet. More than eight in ten centenarians say they eat balanced meals while only 68% of boomers do. Still, a lot of boomers will reach 100… 600,000 are expected to be centenarians in 2050. There are fewer than 75,000 now. The centenarians and boomers surveyed were also asked to choose a favorite dinner guest from among fourteen famous people including the President, Paul McCartney, Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. The top choice for both groups: Betty White. Some things and people clearly get better with age.

Does The ZEO
Reporting Cynthia Demos
Help You Get Your ZZZZZ? Freddy Rozen is a photographer, yearning to sleep better, longer and deeper.
“I really don’t sleep too much,” said Rozen. David Williams is a teacher. He admitted that he wakes up to every noise in the middle of the night. “Sometimes I wake up and I’m still tired,” Williams said. Carla Zyngier is a banker who said she too is curious about her sleep. CBS4’s Cynthia Demos put the three ‘guinea pigs’ to the test. The ZEO is a sleep manager that claims to track how well you sleep. You put the monitor around your forehead like a miner’s light. The device reads your sleep habits through the blue tooth on your smart phone and the results are kept every night to mark your sleep pattern. “I think it’s interesting,” said UHealth Sleep expert Dr. Shirin Shafazand. We brought the device to her for an analysis. She said it measures one brain wave. “In a sleep lab we measure several brain waves,” said Shafazand. “It’s more accurate but this is a good start.” The ZEO tells you how long you sleep. All of our testers slept
around five hours a night, not the seven to nine that experts say are needed. The results show how many times you wake up, how much REM sleep you get, how much light sleep you are getting and it shows your deep sleep. It combines all the information and depending on your age, a sliding device in the package gives you what the company calls a “ZQ” score. If you are in your 20’s you want about 7.3 hours of sleep with 1.6 REM, 83 minutes in deep sleep and 16 min awake. That ZQ score would total 86. Someone in their 40’s needs 6.8 hours of sleep with 1.4 in REM, 56 minutes in deep sleep and 28 minutes awake. That would be a ZQ score of 74. The reaction from our guinea pigs? David Williams said it was “right on the money.” Carla Zyngier told Demos, “It was a confirmation about how I sleep.” Freddy Rozen said, “I loved it.” CBS4’s Cynthia Demos said, “We leant you the device and you liked it so much what happened?” Rozen replied, “The minute I had to return yours, I bought one!” At the beginning of testing the device Freddy was sleeping about 5 hours and not getting enough REM or deep sleep. His ZQ score was low but after reading the ZEO website and finding out the habits he needed to change he made some adjustments. “I had a habit of pigging out or bingeing before bed.” Dr. Shafazand said the information online is what’s most appealing. ”What I like is the sleep management tips that come with it, “ said Shafazand. Freddy also watched his caffeine intake and made other suggested adjustments and suddenly a real change was noted. His ZQ score went from 54 to 76, just perfect! The ZEO proved perfect to helping Freddy get his zzzz’s. The device will run you about $100.

Top Tips To
Shed Weight Lots of people want to drop a few pounds and look better for swimsuit season. While the thought of joining a gym is just not happening for some people, there are a couple of things that can be done to help you lose weight. Enjoy The Meal
The more you see the more you eat! According to Harvard Health Blog, by eating slower your body will have more time to let you know when it’ full. By chewing slower and taking time to enjoy your meal, you give your brain time to process a series of signals which indicate you’re when you are satisfied. This small step can go a long way. You might be surprised to see how much less food you need to feel full.
H2O Never Tasted Better
According to Reader’s Digest, treat yourself to some orange juice in the morning, but after that stick to water. Soft drink lovers consume an extra 245 calories a day. That’s almost an extra 90,000 calories a year, just on soft drinks. By switching to water you can save yourself money and about 25 pounds worth of calories a year. Doesn’t that taste better?
Work It
Yes I said it! Exercise. While this may be hardest part of losing weight for many people, there are many ways to do exercise. You just have to find what you like. Look into what classes your local gym has to offer. According to WebMD, you can even start with something small like walking or working out on an elliptical machine. Move around! The more exercise you do, the faster you will see results and feel better. Remember exercise and a healthy diet go hand in hand for weight loss.
Lighten The Load
One of the biggest secrets to cutting calories is smaller portions. According to WebMD by just reducing your portions by 10 to 20 percent, you can lose weight. Don’t panic! You do not have to cut your portions all at once. You can work your way towards smaller portions by cutting a bit each day until you have reached a portion that leaves you satisfied. According to Brian Wansink, PHD, author of Mindless Eating, use smaller bowls, plates and cups so food will look more plentiful, making you feel less deprived.
Buddy up
Don’t go at this alone. If you know a friend who has a similar resolution then buddy up! Feeling a major craving for junk food? Call your buddy for support. With this system, you will be less likely to cheat. You can even invite him or her over and cook some healthy meals together!

Overall Property Values
Up Slightly In Miami-Dade
Reversing three straight years of declines, Miami-Dade County saw a modest increase in taxable property values for 2012. County property appraiser Pedro J. Garcia said the overall increase was 1.98 percent. “For the first time since I was elected, we can finally say that we can see the light at the end of the tunnel,” said Garcia in a written release. Garcia said 18 of Miami-Dade’s municipalities saw increases in property values ranging from a modest 1.30 percent in Coral Gables to a significant 11.78 percent in Indian Creek. Bal Harbour saw a significant increase of 35 percent as the result of the new Saint Regis luxury hotel and condo complex. Without this development, Bal Harbour’s growth would have been 3.6 percent more in-line with other municipalities in the area. “In my opinion, the real estate market has hit bottom and in some areas of Miami-Dade County we are seeing a recovery,” said Garcia. But it wasn’t all good news. Seventeen cities showed a decline in value but six of them were less than one percent. In those cities with significant declines, such as Florida City (6.3 percent), El Portal (4.13 percent), Homestead (3.8 percent) and Opa Locka (2.36 percent), the declines were less than in the previous three years. Garcia noted that there was also a slight increase in new construction, but not at the level of the boom years. “And most important to note, I believe confidence is up in the real estate markets. New large scale development projects are beginning to break ground or in the planning stages,” said Garcia. In August, property owners will be mailed their Notice of Proposed Property Taxes, commonly called a TRIM (Truth in Millage) Notice, which will reflect the Property Appraiser’s assessment of their individual property values. The TRIM Notice also provides detailed information, such as which exemptions were applied to each property and the dates and times of the taxing authorities’ budget hearings.

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami.com) –
South Florida Sheds
More Than 13,000 Jobs In May Reporting Tim Kephart
The Florida unemployment RATE continued to decline in May, dropping to a seasonally adjusted 8.6 percent. It’s the lowest the unemployment rate has been in the Sunshine State since December 2008. Overall, Florida’s decline in unemployment has mirrored the U.S. unemployment rate, though the U.S. rate ticked up last month. The same can’t be said for South Florida. Looking at the local numbers Broward County’s May unemployment rate rose 0.1 percent from April to settle at 7.3 percent. The numbers translate to more than 72,000 people out of work in the county, or roughly 2,022 more than in April. Miami-Dade County’s unemployment rate spiked in May. The state reported Miami-Dade’s unemployment rate rose by nearly a full point to 9.8 percent in May. In April, Miami-Dade’s unemployment rate stood at 9.0 percent. The rise meant that an additional 11,623 workers were laid off in the county. Still, in a year-over-year comparison, Miami-Dade County’s unemployment rate had dropped from 12.3 percent in May 2011 to May 2012’s 9.8 percent. Monroe County continued to pace the state with an unemployment rate of 4.9 percent. The rate rose 0.1 percent from May, but was still the best unemployment rate in the state. Overall, South Florida shed 13,373 jobs in May. Only eight out of Florida’s 67 counties continued to have unemployment rates above 10 percent.
