As we pass the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, more and more homeowners are finding it impossible to find affordable insurance for their homes or condos. And they’re getting increasingly angry with elected officials who may be unwilling or unable to do anything to stop the rising rates. Like so many other local residents, Larry Jones has seen his Citizens’ insurance bills climb dramatically. The South Miami Heights resident blames state lawmakers for allowing insurance lobbyists to convince state regulators that the industry needs to keep raising rates. “I guess before the insurance increased, our insurance was almost $400$500 a year. Now we’re paying five..some areas of $5000 in homeowners insurance. Our elected officials give them all the breaks, but when it’s on the back of the people, that’s an issue and this is what’s taking place in the State of Florida,” said Jones. “It’s on the backs of the people and that’s sad”. Local insurance insiders tell CBS4 Consumer Investigator Al Sunshine that Tallahassee lawmakers for several decades now have been either unwilling or unable to pass any meaningful insurance reforms aimed at increasing competition and lowering rates. “20 years later you’re definitely feeling the effects, definitely. because we have not been able to fix the problem,” said longtime insurance agent Dulce Suarez Resnick.
Some political analysts say homeowner demand for affordable insurance could soon become a major campaign issue in upcoming fall elections. It could turn into a major political liability for Governor Rick Scott who’s pushed for Citizens to cut policies and raise rates even higher than they are now. Miami Herald political writer Marc Caputo recently told CBS 4 News, “If their insurance rates go up and up and up as incomes remain the same or fall, that’s a perfect storm that’s going to be really difficult for the governor or anyone to survive.” And here’s something else state lawmakers and insurance lobbyists may not be publicizing: Some of the largest home insurers in the country just reported their latest earnings. Allstate, State Farm and Travelers reported about $3 billion-dollars in combined earnings for just second quarter alone. And despite having $6 billion dollars in surplus reserves, Citizens’ continues to insist it needs more money and is now seeking another rate hike from the state. So what can local homeowners do about it? For both state, local and national races, find out the candidates position on better regulating the homeowners’ insurance industry to stabilize rates. If you don’t like the answer you get, consider voting for someone else.

Stocks
Soar Amidst Unemployment
Report Reporting Tim Kephart
The U.S. economy continued to trudge through a difficult fiscal quarter as the economy created 163,000 privatesector jobs in July. The number was the best since February, but the economy’s job creation pace is essentially flat since 2011.

In addition to the jobs numbers, the Labor Department said the unemployment rate ticked up 0.1 percent to 8.3 percent in July. The jobs numbers are campaign fodder for both President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney. For Obama, his campaign claims its proof of a steady, albeit slow, recovery from the Great Recession. For Romney, it allows him to pound the president that the unemployment rate continues to be over 8 percent, despite the stimulus and other jobs ideas. Still, investors were very pleased with the numbers as stocks on both the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ soared, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up more than 240 points and the NASDAQ was up more than 63 points. Additional information in the report found that wages over the last year have been matching the rate of inflation, which combined with the jobs numbers, prompted the Federal Reserve to hold off on taking any immediate action to stimulate the economy. But, things are nowhere near complete recovery. Europe’s financial crisis is hurting U.S. exports; the “fiscal cliff” that faces the United States at the end of the year is unsolved; Congress is hopelessly gridlocked at present; and the country is still teetering on the edge of a recession while trying to come out of the Great Recession. Consumers have taken heed of how businesses are hording cash and have begun doing the same, according to the latest Labor Department numbers. However, much like when businesses sit on trillions of dollars instead of investing in jobs; when consumers conserve money it cripples the U.S.’ economy.

Social Network Helps You
Know Your Neighbors Reporting Vanessa Borge
Doors closed, windows shut and empty streets; neighborhoods are less neighborly. “When I was young, I grew up, everyone knew each other,” Davie resident Kathy Bienick said. “People are always working now.”
But at the community of Country Creek in Davie neighbors are meeting and mingling at National Night Out, an annual nationwide crime prevention event. To organize it and ensure all the neighbors were in the loop, Bienick used a new social networking tool called Nextdoor. Nextdoor is a way to communicate ‘neighbor-to-neighbor’. “It’s like Facebook for a neighborhood,” Bienick said. Nirav Tolia, Nextdoor’s founder, is hoping to connect communities just like Facebook has done for the world. “Why isn’t there a service that helps us connect with those right outside our front door. That was the inspiration for Nextdoor, to bring back that sense of community to your neighborhood,” Tolia said. Just get your community signed up to Nextdoor and begin connecting… Need to borrow a ladder? Or someone to mow your lawn? How about finding out when local construction is going to wrap up? It’s how Bienick got the Country Creek neighborhood networking… “You can put up your updates, having an event, if you want to sell something, if you’re having a garage sale, if you need a babysitter,” said Bienick. Plus, you can feel safe knowing who is signing up in your neighborhood. “Every single member on Nextdoor has to verify their address so you know every single person actually live right in your neighborhood,” Tolia said. With more than 300 homes in her Davie community, Bienick said it’s the way to know who’s living next door. “It does help us get to know one another. You can communicate directly with them,” said Bienick. For more information on Nextdoor, go to nextdoor.com.

Back To School: When Does A Child Really
Need A Cell Phone?
Reporting Al Sunshine
These days, who doesn’t have a cell phone or even a smart phone and that includes many kids who aren’t even in junior high yet.
We’re talking about “tweens”, children between 8 and 12. That’s the fastest area of growth for the cell phone business but when does a child really need a cell phone? “Once they hit junior high, and they started doing things and going places and I needed to get a hold of them, that’s when we gave them their cell phones,” said mother Kristen Swanson. Kristen Swanson is not unusual. The National Consumers League found nearly 6 out of 10 parents of “tweens” have given
their children cells. The top reasons: • Safety • Tracking the child’s after-school activities • The child asked for one “It really depends on what the parent’s purpose is for allowing a child to have a cell phone,” explained neuropsychologist Dr. Pete Stavinoha who believes the ‘tween’ cell phone crash could

Consider the positive benefits, and weighing those against the potential risks.” When trying to decide whether to give your child a cell phone, the National Consumers League suggests you ask these questions: • Does your child really need one? • Will it be used to stay in touch with parents, friends or for emergency use only? • How much do you want to spend? • And most importantly; are they mature enough? “Parents should be monitoring how that child is developing. If things aren’t going the right way that’s when the child is showing they’re not capable,” explained Dr. Stavinoha. The Swansons spend around $250 a month to keep their family connected. Mom and Dad pay for the basics but each child pays for the extras like apps or internet access. Kristen Swanson thinks she’s made the right call for her family. “It really gives me peace of mind knowing that when she comes home after school, she has a way to contact me,” said Kristen.

Reporting Vanessa Borge What would you do if you received a phone call from someone who said, “We’ve kidnapped your brother, or your son or your wife and if you don’t come up with $5,000 in the next hour and deliver it to us – he’ll die?” It’s a frightening scam you need to know about the next time you answer the phone.
“He told me if I hang up the phone he was going to put a bullet in his leg, and he’ll call me back, if I don’t pick up he’ll kill him,” explained Michael Santiago who received a call and for 32 frightening minutes believed his brother Alex was being held hostage. “I was here at work and got a random call from a 305 number. He told me he has my brother. I asked him where he was, what happened to my brother.” The voice on the other end of the call said Alex hit a man on a motorcycle with his car and fled the scene. The caller tracked him down and beat Alex up. “They pulled him out of the car and hit him over the head with a bat. His head was split open and he needed stitches,” Michael said. “Basically all we are asking for are the damages to the motorcycle. It was two-grand,” said Michael. Finally, Michael was able to reach his brother. “My brother is my brother. He’s all I have so I was willing to do whatever I needed to do to get him back.” It turned out, Alex was safe and the entire ordeal was a scam. “It’s a scam that revisits itself every couple of years,” said Officer Kelly Denham from the Coral Gables Police Department. That’s where Michael filed his report and Denham said it’s nothing new to law enforcement. “This scam started in 1998 in Puerto Rico,” Denham said. In the first seven months of the year the Coral Gables PD has reported 44 similar cases to Michael’s. The victims are random; even police officers have gotten the call. “We even had our police officers targeted, but they are aware and when someone hasn’t heard of the scam it’s a very believable story,” Denham said. The FBI is called in on extortion and kidnapping cases. They’ve seen a surge as well, but more so online. “Over the last year or so we’re getting one or two a month however we’re getting one reported on the internet at least once a week,” FBI Special Agent Michael Leverock said. So what should you do in case you get the call? “Don’t provide them with personal information, and go ahead and call your relative, try and seek it out, but if something does seem amiss you can always call your local police department,” Denham said. The best thing you could do if you do receive a call and believe it’s a hoax, police say simply, hang up.

The kids are back in school and that means homework and big projects but how much work should you do to help your kids do well in class? According to the experts, it’s important for you not to do your kids big projects. “The problem is we are not letting our kids be independent and also the teachers end up not being able to tell what we did versus what our kids did,” explained Stacy DeBroff, CEO of MomCentral.com. DeBroff said this dilemma is a hot top on her website because many parents say they don’t want to see their kids stressing out and overwhelmed. “Often times the teachers say I want to see the struggle, I want to see the mistakes, otherwise I don’t know how to dive into the classroom and work on grammar or spelling or helping with a book report or poster.” DeBroff said for parents, it’s all in the pre-planning when it comes to projects. First step, create a timeline that eliminates leaving everything until the last minute. “The things that create so much anxiety are when we don’t know what our kid’s timeline is, so create one. This is an example where we are helping them, so we are saying okay what do you need; you need a box of balls? Some string? So that we don’t have the scramble the night before,” explained DeBroff. The next step is to have a box filled with supplies ahead of time. “This is an example of having cool crafts out like duct tape or magic markers or highlighters so that kids can feel even if they are not artsy, there’s a way to make those projects look terrific and it’s not a lot of work and you can help them set up for that.” Next, keep a basket handy that the kids put their nightly homework in. You’ll know what’s due but you won’t be doing the work.
“What you realize is that kids need to stand on their own and even though it’s so tempting for us to help them, really they learn to do their best when we’re cheering them on answering questions and brainstorming next steps but not being the doers.” Stressed DeBroff. You can get more back to school tips from DeBroff’s book called “The Mom Book Goes To School” or visit her website.

Inability To Watch
3-D Movies May Indicate Bigger Problem
It’s the summer of 3-D movies but, some people can’t see 3-D at all. And if you have a severe headache after watching a 3-D movie it’s a sign of a bigger problem.
Reporting Cynthia Demos
The souped-up 3-D technology is a hit at the movies this summer but a super hero couldn’t even help some folks see the images properly. Ten percent of the population can’t see at all in 3-D and 30% say it’s actually too painful to watch. “It’s such a nuisance to my eyes,” 14-year-old Siara Biederman told CBS4’s Cynthia Demos. “I try to watch the movie but every couple of minutes it goes blurry so it’s kind of hard to watch.” Instead of the film looking three dimensional Siara said things look double. Her optometrist Dr. Barry Kay from Hollywood Eyes in Hollywood, explained that it is simply her vision that is off. “3-D vision requires two eyes that see equally well and they have to be aligned and pointed in the right spot. Siara does not have good visual function.” Kay said these movies can act as a real vision test if the 3D is blurry or
makes you see double or gives you a headache, it’s a sign you need to get your vision checked. According to Kay, the ultimate time to catch the problem is before your child turns seven. After that it just gets worse. As for Siara, a quick fix is to wear the 3-D glasses over her real glasses or get contacts. Now for those with only vision in one eye or a lazy eye the problem will likely never be able to be fixed. “It’s pretty common, more than people realize,” said Kay. A tangled web that can be helped if you are willing to take a leap into addressing the problem. Dr. Kay said if you catch the problem in time you can treat it with a patch, eye exercises, or possibly by having surgery.

Rehab for ADD Medications
On the Rise Reporting Cynthia Demos
Annie Gendaszek was introduced to ADHD medications when she was just 13-years old, by a friend with a prescription. “I really liked the effect and how they made me feel, so I sought out my own prescriptions from doctors,” said Gendaszek. By the time she was in college, she was abusing the drugs daily, and she knew she needed help. “Significant weight loss, irritable moods. I started lying, being dishonest, stealing,” Gendaszek claimed. Dr. Timothy Wilens, Director for the Center of Addiction Medicine in Boston and Massachusetts General Hospital, said an estimated five to ten percent of young people are misusing or abusing ADD/ADHD medications. “If you’re just popping them willy nilly and you’re using them in context with other substances, which is frequently occurring, that could be potentially dangerous,” said Wilens. Rehab centers say they’re seeing an influx of patients addicted to the drugs. “It’s huge. I have probably a hundred clients and over 80 percent of them have been addicted to Adderall since they were in grade school. It’s an enormous rise from just ten years ago,” said Velvet Mangan CEO Safe Harbor Treatment Centers for Women. Experts blame the fact that the drugs are easy to obtain and socially acceptable.
“It’s just kind of the norm on college campuses, just like drinking is,” Mangan pointed out. Timothy Wilens, insisted, “It’s similar to misusing any kind of amphetamine or speed or cocaine. And it’s going to require abstinence from that. It’s going to require recovery management skills, how to fight urges, how to fight cravings.” Rehab centers also focus on the emotional problems behind the substance abuse. “It’s not what you use, it’s why you’re using,” Mangan pointed out. “So we focus on life skills, we focus on self-esteem.” Through rehab, Annie got the help she needed. And she’s about to celebrate four years of sobriety. “It’s a really sad and lonely place to be. But there is hope and there is a solution.” said Annie. Experts point out in addition to being harmful to your health and addictive, selling ADHD prescription or even just giving it away to your friends is actually a felony offense subject to serious penalties including fines and jail time if convicted.

Bryan Underwood is a diet model turned chef. Instilled within his blood, Underwood was destined for the culinary scene. Rather than using processed foods, Underwood stresses “real food” with natural ingredients. His downtown Miami joint serves up everything from paninis to cupcakes, topped with a healthier, but just as tasty French buttercream. Or try a smoothie made with homemade Greek yogurt; flavors include mango, blueberry and acai. If looking to throw a healthy party, Bryan is available for catering as well.
This former Food Network star now has a Univision show called “Delicioso with Ingrid Hoffmann.” And with good reason, it is the first cooking show with a weekly U.S. broadcast on a national network. The Miami native has been in the cooking atmosphere for more than 13 years. And, just for good measure, Hoffmann co-owns the food truck Latin Burger and Taco. The Latin macho burger is to die for, no joke – chorizo, Oaxaca cheese, chuck, fresh-rolled sirloin and Ingrid’s special “avocadolicious” sauce, made with Chilean haas avocados.

Reporting Al Sunshine
It’s the time of year when cooks head outside and grill up a storm.
Now, they can do that on the go with Cuisinart’s Portable Roll-Away Gas Grill. According to Dan Ackerman at CNET, “It has a built in stand that folds down, and then you can just wheel the entire thing away. You can roll it down the street, or you can put it in the back of the car.” Keep the cook cool with the Sharper Image Barbecue Grill Light and Fan. Ackerman says, “The fans take the smoke and heat and move them away from you so that you can stand there right in front of the grill, and it’s a lot more comfortable.” For something simpler, the Luma Tongs on Amazon.com light the way so you can cook your patties to perfection with the help of Brookstone’s Talking Meat Thermometer. “You just plunge it right into whatever you’re cooking, and you have a little receiver you take with you,” says Ackerman. For drinks, Opena’s iPhone case doubles as a bottle opener, and the Cooper Cooler chills beverages in a snap. According to Ackerman, “You slip in a bottle of wine, or a bottle of beer, or a soda can, a little bit of water, a little bit of ice. Plug it in and hit start, and it will cool it down in three or four or five minutes.” For tunes, turn your grilling experience green with a solar powered Boombox by Eton Rukus or try Eco Terra’s Waterproof Player. Ackerman says, “You can even put your iPhone or your iPod inside in a waterproof case and just toss it in the pool. It will actually float.” These products cost anywhere from $20 to around $230.

South Florida Store At Dolphin Mall IKEA lovers of Miami-Dade County could be in for a great surprise. IKEA, the popular Swedish-based home furnishings store, announced its plans for a Miami-Dade store in the City of Sweetwater, adjacent to the Dophin Mall. The up-and-coming store would be the second IKEA in South Florida; the first one is in Broward County. The IKEA Miami will reach up to 417,000-square-feet with about 1,500 spaces for parking. Located west of Miami International Airport, Miami-Dade IKEA customers will no longer have to travel to the IKEA Sunrise store. Pending approvals, construction of IKEA Miami could begin as early as spring 2013, with an opening as early as fall 2014. “We are thrilled with the reception afforded IKEA since entering the state nearly five years ago, so we are excited to submit plans for IKEA Miami where we can grow our Florida and southeastern U.S. reach” said Mike Ward, IKEA U.S. president. “This proposed store would complement our South Florida presence established in Sunrise and bring the unique family-friendly shopping experience closer to existing and new Miami-Dade customers.” IKEA Miami will feature nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items, 50 room-settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children’s play area and a 500-seat restaurant. A Children’s IKEA will also be included in the Showroom, providing baby care rooms, preferred parking and play areas throughout the store. Not only will IKEA be valuable for customers, but IKEA Miami expects to create more than 500 jobs during the construction phase and approximately 400 workers will be needed when the new store opens up. IKEA Miami aims to minimize impacts on the environment by including water-conserving restrooms, eliminating plastic bags from the check-out process and facilitating recycling of customers’ compact fluorescent bulbs.

Drops To Record Low Florida’s infants are surviving life-threatening diseases at its highest rate on record. Florida’s infant mortality rate fell to 6.4 deaths per 1,000 live births, a record low and down 33 percent from 1990. The good news from the Florida Department of Health (DOH) was part of the Annual Bureau of Vital Statistics’ report. “Reducing infant mortality has been a priority in Florida for many years and remains a long term commitment,” said Division Director for Community Health Promotion Betsy Wood. “The success of decreasing the infant mortality rate is attributed to multiple factors like working with systems of care, quality providers and effective health messages.” County Health Departments and the DOH central office are responsible for implementing and continuing efforts to improve infant health. In Florida, these agencies’ efforts include: • State and federal Healthy Start programs, which provide universal risk screening of all Florida’s pregnant women and newborn infants • Money-saving waivers for Healthy Start Medicaid and Family Planning Medicaid • Multiple programs funded by Closing the Gap Grants, which reduce infant mortality and improve birth outcomes For further information on infant mortality, see the 2011 Florida Vital Statistics annual report. The last thing on most parents’ mind this time of year is worrying about having identity thieves steal their children’s personal data to take out credit cards, loans, and even renting homes in their kids’ names. But it’s something that is a growing problem that parents should pay attention to. “It hasn’t really been a thought actually,” said Monica Nares, a mother of two in Kendall. “I remember their pediatricians office putting it on their initial papers and probably in their schools registration. But I haven’t really put their information out there other than those two times I can think of.” Recent studies by Carnegie Mellon University found children may be 50 times more likely to have their identities stolen than adults. The Federal Trade Commission also said it had more than 22,000 juvenile ID theft complaints in 2011. And parents should know, the problem is getting worse. “Generally, it tends to come to light once the children do turn 18 and get into the college years and obtain financial aid for the federal program. It
comes to light they may have mortgages out in their names and defaults or judgments that they’ve never had any knowledge of prior to that,” said James Porter of the Miami field office for the Secret Service. Mother of three Janelle Merritt said the identity theft problem is why she is so careful with her children’s identities. She said she asks how their records are being kept and makes sure they’re locked up, whether at her doctor’s office or at school. “When I look in their office it looks pretty concealed and it looks like it goes into a cabinet that’s locked, so I feel a little secure in that,” said Merritt. Merritt is doing just what’s the Federal Trade Commission said parents should be doing to protect their kids’ identities. Among the recommendations from the FTC are: • Ask schools and daycare centers how personal records are stored • Review school records for accuracy to see what personal information they may contain • Opt-out of school phone directories, so identity thieves won’t have your children’s home telephone numbers • Be careful what personal information you release to after-school activities. “Anyplace that you have to give the child’s information, the social security number, date of birth, first name, last name, address, that type of thing become ways that criminals might obtain it; whether it’s a medical facility or any other type of location facility that may use that information,” said Porter. “I’m still nervous, we always have fear,” Janelle said. “But I try not to live in fear; bad things can happen anytime.” Cyberscam experts said computers remain a popular way of getting kids to sign-up for free games or discounts in return for their names and other personal data; and it’s still a very common way for identity thieves to target young children.”

Inspiring Moms Take Challenging Situation
Reporting Shannon Hori
To Help Others
Two South Florida mothers have taken a challenging situation and used it to refocus their own lives and in the process, impact others. Michelle Coffey-Garcia and Claudia Orrett met in the waiting room of a therapy office several years ago, where they both took their daughters who had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Both women delivered their children prematurely and said early on they knew their girls had the motor condition. Michelle told CBS4’s Shannon Hori when a doctor finally confirmed Sami had cerebral palsy; she felt relief because she finally had a diagnosis. Claudia had delivered twin girls. She said she knew Chloe had cerebral palsy because she could compare the development to her twin sister. She got the diagnosis when Chloe was 8-months old. “You’re happy in a sense you know what your child has. But on the flip side, you’re filled with so many emotions. ‘OK, what do you do next? What’s the next step?’” Both mothers started reading everything they could about cerebral palsy. At the therapy office they would share everything, specialists, treatments, and shoulders to lean on. Claudia and her husband decided to offer a specialized therapy at the Coral Gables children’s school they already ran, Blossom’s. That’s where Michelle’s daughter also gets therapy. Then, the women who had been soaking up information for years, asked this question. “We said to each other how could we share this information, it would be great,” Claudia said. “Oh, let’s start a magazine.” So they did and called it “Unique Me Magazine.” It’s for families with children with special needs. Unique Me is now in its second issue. The women explained when it becomes profitable they plan to provide scholarships for therapy for families in need. “We ourselves are accomplishing something we never imagined. I mean, a magazine, you know,” said Claudia proudly. Michelle agreed. “You look at the magazine. You look at it and say, ‘Now I understand why we have our daughters. Now it’s all coming together.’”

Commuter Marriages MIAMI (CBSMiami.com)
Grow As Economy Slows
Reporting Cynthia Demos
Every night, Nancy Fagen comes home to an empty house and it’s not because she’s single. Her husband is three thousand miles away, at work. It’s yet another side effect of the economy forcing some committed couples into “commuter marriages.” “The first time we were apart, it was for about a month, and it was hard,” Fagen said. “It’s so lonely and I know he was lonely.” Many people are being kept apart because of the shaky job market. Some are relocating to retain a job and the numbers are showing that it’s an upward trend. About 3 ½ million couples are living in commuter marriages, which is up 30 percent since 1990. Those numbers continue to rise. “The real estate market is really depressed, so the other partner ends up staying behind until the house sells,” said Karla Bergen, a Ph.D. and assistant professor and communications program coordinator of Women’s
Studies at the College of Saint Mary. “People get married to be together and when you’re in a commuter marriage, you don’t see each other as you would normally.” It can also be an expensive proposition. A recent survey found that only a quarter of businesses offer assistance to commuting employees. But the author of “The Commuter Marriage” says cheap technology via Skype, cellphones and texting helps bridge the long distance. “It’s really good for the person far away to feel more connected and it’s also good for the person at home to feel like the person who’s away understands what’s going on,” said Tina Tessina, PhD., psychotherapist, and author of The Commuter Marriage.
45
cbs4 Newspaper
For Information Call: 305.477.1699 She said there can even be surprising benefits to a commuter arrangement. “It can refresh a marriage that’s stale because people have been together all the time and there’s nothing new happening and suddenly you get that rush of ‘Wow I’ve missed you!’” Tessina said. Nancy Fagen agrees saying absence has really made her heart grow fonder. “It’s a honeymoon! We don’t focus on the negative because we don’t have time to,” she said. The economy isn’t the only thing to blame for an increase in commuter marriages. Experts say an increase of people meeting online and a more global economy are also factoring into such arrangements.
“It’s really good for the person far away to feel more connected and it’s also good for the person at home to feel like the person who’s away understands what’s going on,”

Telling
Lies
Can Make You Physically Sick Reporting Cynthia Demos
As children we learn honesty is the best policy– but as adults–not everyone adheres to it. “I did not have sexual relations with that woman,” declared former President Bill Clinton. “I know that it’s not possible that this child could be mine,” insisted former Presidential candidate John Edwards. “I shall resign the presidency effective tomorrow,” said President Richard Nixon in 1974. Studies estimate Americans lie eleven times a week, on average. “There are lot’s of reasons people lie, personal gain, avoiding some untoward consequence, sometimes we lie to boost our self-esteem,” said Psychiatrist Dr. Robin Kerner. But whatever the reason, a new study–conducted by the University of Notre Dame suggests it’s bad for your health. “One group was specifically told to try not to lie and the other, the control group, was not given any such instructions,” said Dr. Kerner. Researchers say the group of participants who reduced lying for ten weeks– experienced significantly fewer headaches–sore throats–tenseness–anxiety–and other health problems–than those who continued to lie regularly.
“I think anything that is going to affect our stress, affects our health,” Kerner declared. Kerner says it makes perfect sense because lying is stressful. ”If I’m telling lies, especially major lies, that’s going to create a lot of internal stress which can manifest itself in a whole host of medical problems.” But it’s not just major lies that can make you sick. “Sometimes we do this to help other people, ‘Gee, I love your hair cut,’ when I don’t like it very much,” said Kerner. Researchers found even little white lies–like exaggerations–and making false excuses–can be harmful to your health. “I don’t know, I’ll have to see if it impacts my life, they say you know what happened to her, she told too many lies,” one woman told us. While some people say they don’t see the harm in telling little white lies–especially if it makes friends and family feel better–others say lying–big or small– just isn’t worth it. Dr. Kerner said it’s important to get to the root of why you’re lying–which can help you curb it. “For some people lying can become a sort of a coping strategy. So instead of dealing with the problem, they create this world of lies.”

Reporting Cynthia Demos
A controversial approach to marriage, and staying married has lots of ladies talking, especially in South Florida. In the New York Times best-selling books, “The Surrendered Single” and “The Surrendered Wife”, the author Laura Doyle claims her ‘surrendering’ approach to dating and marriage can transform relationships and bring women romance, harmony, and the intimacy they crave. But is the advice really helpful? CBS4 had four women test the books to see if it worked. Danielle Klahr, a 33-year-old single teacher said she’s hoping to find ‘the one.’ “My parents just want me to meet the right person,” explained Klahr to CBS4’s Cynthia Demos. Sabrina Cohen is 34-years-old. She is single and heads The Sabrina Cohen Foundation for Stem Cell Research. “I think for me personally, my fears revolve around my disability and myself worth,” said Sabrina who was in a car accident and is now a quadriplegic. She and her best friend Danielle are studying the book “The Surrendered Single.” Debbie Israel was also put to the test. She’s engaged and is a teacher. Israel questioned, “Do I take the plunge? Do I get married and take the chance?” Gloria Drago is the fourth woman. She’s been married for 24 years and she definitely has a goal. “Keeping things a little bit spicy and fresh, sometimes it’s not easy, especially with teenagers in the house,” said Drago. The four women met with the author of the two books. “As a woman, we actually have all the power to make or break our relationships,” explained Doyle. Doyle believes single women shouldn’t look for “Mr. Right”, they should attract him instead. As for married women, they shouldn’t try to control everything. Just surrender a little and the intimacy will be back, she said. Here are some of Laura Doyle’s key tips:
• Smile at the universe • Allow him to ask you out • Be quiet • Listen more • Talk less • Take a compliment • Accept help • Get online for dating • Remember a suggestion or advice often comes across as criticism After four weeks of implementing what the women learned from the author and in the books, CBS4’s Cynthia Demos checked back in with the ladies. The married women said the tips in the book definitely worked for them. When asked whether her sex life was better, Gloria Drago, married for 24 years, replied with a smile, “Oh yes. There were some good tips in the book, definitely.” One of the best tips Gloria got out of the book was to talk less. “Be quiet and listen that’s one of my biggest faults listening.” For engaged Debbie Israel, she had to learn how to take a compliment. “The man feels like the man and it does something to pump him up,” said Israel. The single ladies also felt the book had a positive impact. “Smile at the universe was a really good one,” said Danielle Klahr. “I noticed that people were smiling back.” While she hasn’t had any dates in the four weeks after meeting with the author, she said she felt things were getting aligned. Sabrina Cohen followed the advice of Laura Doyle and spruced up her online profile. “I changed my profile on a few sites and was straight forward and fun. Within a few conversations one guy said ‘I’d like to take you out’.” She went on the date and said he is not ‘the one’ but it was wonderful practice and definitely made her feel more comfortable for the next time.

How To Stay
Germ Free Through School Year MIAMI (CBS4) — Going back to school is synonymous for most kids with getting sick. Illnesses such as colds, flu, head-lice and pink eye are common but there are five major things you can do to stay germ free through the school year.
But do parents know what those five things are? CBS4’s Cynthia Demos put parents at Dolphin Mall to the test. She first asked father of three Ovidio Naranjo what the most important thing his kids could do to stay germ free through the school year. He said, “Wash your hands.” Correct! Miami Children’s Hospital pediatrician Dr. Marcos Mestre said the golden rule for school is washing your hands. “Obviously before they eat and anytime they feel they’ve gotten their hands dirty,” he said. He also recommends that kids carry hand sanitizer if they can’t make it to the wash room. School nurse Cindy Harrah agreed and said the second most important thing to do to stay healthy is to get into a sleep routine. “They will require 8-10 hours of sleep a night,” she explained. Number three on the list is going to a pediatrician before school starts for a checkup. Cynthia asked dad Jose Llerena if his kids went for a checkup and he said, “Yes, my wife took care of that!” Number four on the list is make sure vaccines are up to date including meningitis and tetanus booster. Number five on the list is all fitness all the time and check your child’s BMI. That’s something mom Maria Perez did last year. She said her daughter actually lost 20 pounds and is now healthy and happy for school. So parents, if your kids follow these tips they can be sick only 25-percent of the time that is a 75-percent improvement rate.

New Workout Fitness Buffs Sweeping South Florida
Reporting Rhiannon Ally
If you get bored with your workout easily, it may be time to switch it up. Interval training classes are more popular than ever and can offer a very intense workout which means more results in less time. CBS4’s Rhiannon Ally tried a class at Orangetheory Fitness. She also spoke with others in the class to see if they think the classes are worth all the hype. Andy Westbrook, from North Miami Beach, said he’s noticed results from the classes. “My pants have gotten looser; I’ve gotten better at the workout. It’s better cardio and I feel better overall.” Interval training is not as complicated as it looks. It’s short bursts of intense activity with intervals of lighter exercise. Chan Gannaway from Orangetheory Fitness didn’t go easy on Rhiannon. “You’re going to suffer a little bit and then we’ll pull you out of it. I don’t want you to suffer the whole hour,” he told her.
At this fitness center, there are trainers motivating people every step of the way. “The coaches are there, constantly pushing you, pushing, pushing, and at the end of 60 minutes, you come out exhausted with a really good workout,” said Westbrook. Every participant has a heart monitor strapped on during the whole hour.
