A Growing Trend

A new trend in sAving money hAs people looking at social media for savings. People are hoping on group saving sites and buying coupons for more than just a cheap meal at a new restaurant. They are using the daily deal sites for health and medical related deals. In fact, new numbers show in 2011 consumers spent as much as $230 million on deals in the health and medical category. CBS4 caught up with Stephen Fox saving money at the dentist. “It is definitely worth it because you save a lot of money,” said Stephen Fox. Like so many south Floridians, Fox, a graduate student from St Thomas law school in Miami Gardens, has medical needs. “I am in that strange window. I am not working full time. I am not on any group health coverage. I am too old to be under my parents,” said Fox who headed to Living Social and found a deal at the Miami Center for Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry. For $35, he received a consultation, exam, x-rays and a teeth cleaning all for an 85 percent savings. “I couldn’t believe it,” said Fox. “I thought it was a great deal and chance to get into see the dentist after a couple of years.” According to the Center’s for Disease Control and

Prevention, 46 million Americans under the age of 65 have no health insurance and have to pay out of pocket even for the basic medical attention. “They get it at a significantly reduced price and they are able to know exactly where they stand with their mouth and have a clean mouth afterward,” said Dr. Jan Zeigler of Miami Center for Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry. A great idea right? Dealradar.com seems to find the numbers to support that, the daily deal comparison site found an increase in medical related deals in 2011 • Eye care went from 82 to 207 in 2011. • Skin treatment started at 298 and went to 1393 in 2011 • Dental grew from 764 to 4,429. • Weight Loss started 2011 at 80 and grew to 2888. South Florida daily deal Expert Natalie McNeal, who operates her site www.thefrugalista.com shared a warning to keep you from falling into the daily deal trap. “These are great deals but you need to watch out because you can end up spending so much money on things you don’t need that it defeats the purpose and you end up spending more money than saving,” said McNeal. For Dr Zeigler, the idea behind his deal was to bring a smile to his patients “We’re in some very challenging times. I figured it was my opportunity to give back to the community,” said Dr. Zeigler whose idea is really making a difference. “I just think it is a great opportunity for people like me who are on the fringe,” Fox said. “And they don’t normally put their dental health on the highest priority but it is something important you should take care of.”

One mOrning — after a pre-dawn planning session — investigators from the Internet Crimes Against Children, or ICAC, task force drove the van into a quiet, working class Margate neighborhood. Their target was a man suspected of downloading and sharing explicit images of “very young children under the age of 12 engaging in various sex acts” with adults and children, according to an arrest report. The suspect, George Baram, emerged from his house wearing a shirt that read, “It’s your lucky day.” For Baram, it turned out to be anything but lucky. As agents from the ICAC carried computers, hard drives and compact discs out of Baram’s home, technicians began sifting through the computer hardware in the van. Within a short time, they discovered the videos. An arrest report shows that

FDLE also has more agents at its’ disposal in their fight against child pornography. Last summer, agents from the state attorney general’s office joined forces with FDLE. The agents were spread across the state and it resulted in an increase of 6 officers fighting crimes against children in South Florida. “It allows us to share intelligence, share training, share information much more quickly than when we were having to be in separate offices,” Phillips said. The ICAC is comprised of agents from 57 agents across South Florida and into Naples. The task force is federally funded and is headed by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. The van has been a welcome addition to the efforts to curtail the downloading and sharing of child

he t n o e b y a m y e ple th o e p e s e h t f o e “For som ually molesting a child” verge of act Baram confessed, saying he downloaded the videos then deleted them. Baram told investigators, “that he has never touched a child in a sexual manner.” Mike Phillips, FDLE’s Chief of the Computer Crimes Center, said the van enables agents to do time-consuming forensic examinations on the spot, which is a major change. “Before we were having to leave suspects out on the streets until we could fully look at all the evidence,” Phillips explained. “We can now conduct a search warrant and make a decision and take the predator off the street so they can now longer prey on children and exploit them.” Phillips said there is a “significant increase” in child pornography cases statewide and because of the heavy caseload, Phillips said that in the past it could take up to a year to examine a suspect’s computer. Stats from FDLE show that in 2011, the agency made 1,076 arrests in child pornography cases statewide. In 2008, that number was 749. The van is assisting agents to deal with the caseload, Phillips said. He added that it also encourages confessions. While agents in one section of the van are examining the computer equipment, they can confront the suspect, who is seated in another section, with the images of child pornography found on his computer. “We have had suspects break down and cry,” Phillips said. “We’ve had suspects that become defiant, that want us to learn why this is ok. Because in their minds they truly believe that abusing children sexually is normal.”

pornography. With all the latest technology inside, the van’s cost about $100,000 and there are three of them operating statewide. The van sat quietly outside George Baram’s home in Margate as cyber detectives built their case against him. We spoke to George Baram briefly after he was handcuffed and led to a waiting unmarked police car. When asked why he was being arrested, Baram initially denied downloading child pornography. Then he said, “You download stuff, music, sometimes file names are mislabeled.” When asked if he watched the videos of child pornography that investigators say they found on his children he told CBS 4 News, “I delete them.” FDLE, meanwhile, said they expect more arrests as they use this van to continue the task force’s crackdown on child pornography. “For some of these people they may be on the verge of actually molesting a child,” said Bob Breeden, FDLE Assistant Special Agent in Charge. “For every person that we can take off the street that’s involved in child pornography that may be one child that doesn’t get victimized.” FDLE agents say parents need to pay close and constant attention to the online activities of their children. FDLE recommends a website — secureflorida.org — which has safety tips and important information for keeping track of the websites your child visits and their passwords.

If you’ve ever trIed to Install a car seat, you know

how frustrating it can be for even the most seasoned parent. According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, there’s a reason for this, cars aren’t being set up properly to make car seat installation easy. The IIHS focused on the system known as Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, or LATCH. The system was originally designed with standard hardware to make car seat installation easier. Even with the LATCH system, the installation of a car seat is still problematic. “Installing a child restraint isn’t always as simple as a couple of clicks and you’re done,” says Anne McCartt, the Institute’s senior vice president for research and one of the report’s authors. “Sometimes parents blame themselves when they struggle with LATCH, but oftentimes the problem lies with the vehicle, not the user.” The IIHS found that only seven vehicles out of 98 analyzed had a LATCH system in the middle of a second-row seat, which is the safest place for children to travel. In addition, the lower anchors for the system were visible on just 36 of the 98 cars studied. IIHS researchers looked at three factors in making their determinations: Depth, Clearance, and Force. Depth referred to how deep in the seat the anchors were. Clearance refers to nothing obstructing access to the anchors. Researchers said force was based on using less than 40 pounds of force during installation. Several 20111 models did meet all of the easy-installation criteria including:

Lindsey MargoLis is teLLing her story to prevent others from becoming victimized as well. “(The job) was like almost too good to be true,” Margolis said. And she soon learned that the job was. Margolis, 24, was desperate to find work. She says she posted her resume on a reputable employment website and received an offer to be a personal assistant based in the United States for an art gallery owner in Australia. Margolis said the job seemed legitimate and the pay was good. “He emailed me and said I’m going to be sending you some money orders,” she said. “I need you to cash these money orders and wire the money elsewhere.” Margolis showed CBS4 News copies of the money orders. Each was for just under one-thousand dollars. The money orders were payable through Wells Fargo so Margolis used her mother’s bank account at Wells Fargo to cash the money orders and wire the money to a third party in Malaysia. “A week later it turned out the money orders were no good,” Margolis explained. The phony money orders left Margolis and her mom on the hook for more than four thousand dollars. While the person in Malaysia walked away with Margolis’ money. Sergeant Jay Leiner with the Broward Sheriff’s Office says they are seeing this scam more and more often. “If somebody’s asking you to send money back that should

raise a red flag right away,” Leiner said. “A person needs to work. They think they’re doing the right thing and then they’ll go and get the checks and they want to send the money out. Then they become the victim not once but twice.” Lindsey Margolis found a new job but she and her mom will be paying back Wells Fargo for awhile. “I’m starting from scratch,” she said. “I’m starting from negative.” Sgt. Leiner said it’s difficult to track down the bad guys because they are out of the country. He said the victim’s are on the hook for the money because even though the bank cashed the checks, the checks had not fully been cleared. “Remember when you put a check in the account you’re telling the bank that we have a contract, this is good until it totally clears the system,” Leiner said. “Once it becomes counterfeit you’re held responsible.” A spokesperson with Wells Fargo offered the following advice: * Use common sense. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. * Don’t accept checks from people you’ve only

That’s The Spirit! Miramar Airline Up For Stinky Salute

MIRAMAR (CBSMIAMI) – Usually an award is a nice thing to receive, but Miramar-based Spirit airlines might not think much of an award from a consumer website looking for the Worst Company in America. Spirit made the list of possibles, and if they win, the award is, well, something the dog left at the curb. For the last 7 years, Consumerist.com has staged a “bracketsstyle” competition to select the nation’s worst company. The website starts by pitting banks against banks, airlines against airlines, etc. The second round matches different companies against each other. Eventually, as in the NCAA tournament, two

are left standing, and 1 will claim the “Worst Company” crown. n this year’s competition, Spirit was matched against Delta, but the website said Spirit edged Delta by a dozen points. Spirit is known for low fairs and news-based promotions some have criticized as tacky, but it makes up for the low fares by charging fees for just about everything, including carry-on luggage. Other companies in the running are Apple, known for it’s customer service friendliness, Facebook, and AT&T. The website said the award is modeled after a “pile of poo”.

haMMeRschlag studies the mythical sea creatures to discover how their ailments could be linked to the development of human diseases. “The shark is sending us an SOS,” he said as he traveled on a boat with his research team. “I’m attempting to draw blood.” It’s an SOS about a health threat that not only affects sharks, but also affects man. His team has found links between the sharks and diseases that cripple and kill humans. “Toxins that can give you Alzheimer’s, dementia, ALS, Parkinson’s. Pretty scary stuff,” Hammerschlag said. Back on land, his partner Dr. Deborah Mash, a professor of Neurology for the Miller School of

never expected that. That means that it is very prevalent in the shark diet,” Mash said. “The results are staggering. I never predicted that we would see the incidence of this toxin in the large number of shark samples off the South Florida coastal waters.” When asked why this toxin is so dangerous, Mash said, “This toxin has been shown to damage neurons. Neurons are the primary building block of the brain.” The toxin, which has been shown to kill brain cells, has turned up – repeatedly – in Mash’s studies of the human brain — particularly of the brains of victims of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson and Lou Gehrig’s patients.

Medicine at the University of Miami, studies his findings inside a lab. “This is a first. No one has seen this data,” Mash said. “Is there a footprint suggesting an SOS from the shark?” CBS4’s Chief Investigative Reporter Michele Gillen asked. “There is,” Mash said. “He is an apex predator, as we are. He is going to mirror what we are doing to our bodies. The shark is giving us a mirror on what is coming into our diet. Showing us what is out there in our marine environment that can damage out bodies.” The journey for answers begins with a dizzying display of precision, which begins with the intubation of the shark so that oxygenated water pours through its gills. Then, the sharks are examined, biopsied, blown on and electronically tagged. For scientists and students, this is a key moment — not only tagging the shark but evaluating the blood and stress levels of the shark, for research the world awaits. What they found in the shark fin? The neurotoxin BMAA (short for B-Methylamino-L-alanine), which is produced by an algae known as cyanobacteria, often found in lakes, oceans and the soil. “We were really surprised at the level of detection of this toxin BMAA in the shark fins,” Mash said. The team examined 100 samples from seven shark species. “We found it in all but three samples that we tested. I

“We are detecting BMAA in the brains of the patients that have donated them for research,” Mash said. “That is why we are seeing linkage with Alzheimer’s and with Lou Gehrig’s disease.” If the shark holds clues to brain-based diseases that have the potential to affect everybody — it’s even more chilling that the shark is threatened today because of a demand for soup made from its fin. “100 million sharks are killed a year,” Hammerschlag said. “A rate of 270,000 sharks per day mostly to make shark fin soup.” The soup is considered a delicacy and sign of prosperity in Asian cultures. But South Florida’s team of scientific detectives are just publishing their work that suggests consumers might want to think twice before biting into a food that tradition says will bring them luck. “If you consume shark fin products or you use this in your diet, yes, you are going to be exposed to increasing amounts of BMAA’s,” Mash said. “With repeat exposure throughout the life span, it could put someone at risk for a brain disorder like Alzheimer’s and Lou Gehrig’s disease.” All this is the first chapter of a medical mission aimed at unearthing clues that link man – the oceans top predator – and our survival. “This is all about human health and this is all about the risk to human health,” Mash said. “And the shark may give us the fundamental clue that allows us to make a great breakthrough.” May 2012 CBS4 News Magazine Coral Gables [ 21 ]

Caffeinated Potato ChiPs Offer Boost Of Energy reportIng jorge estevez

If you need a jolt of energy, coffee and sodas are not the only answer anymore. A new kind of potato chip can give you the same buzz you’d get from energy drinks and they look and crunch the like any other chip. In addition to potato’s salt and spices, they have B vitamins, caffeine and taurine, an ingredient commonly found in energy drinks. “I think they’re trying to target the young those who are athletic or wish to be,” said Jo Ann Hattner, a nutritionist who is surprised to hear of yet another energy product. Hattner questions whether coating potato chips with energy supplements really give you much of a boost. “It’s what I call an image food. 70 milligrams of caffeine is really not that much, you might get that in a shot of espresso,” said Hattner. With espresso you’d get fewer calories. The Arma energy chips, for example, come with 70 milligrams of caffeine and 290 calories. Compare that to a can of Red bull which has 80

milligrams for 110 calories. A shot of espresso offers the same boost with only 5 calories. So gram for gram, if you are watching your weight, this product may not be for you. “We strive for whole foods as much as possible that would give the most energy over a sustained period of time,” said personal trainer Elizabeth Bachrad. But just because they’re not for the health conscious doesn’t mean they are not for people looking for a tasty treat with a bit of a boost. However, the product is not recommended for pregnant women and children.

Many people believe deceMber 21, 2012 will be The end of The world. buT scienTisTs are insTead looking To The year 2040 as a poTenTial “arMageddon.” The reason is ThaT an asTeroid, AG5, may come close enough to earth in 2040 that some researchers are calling for a discussion about how to deflect it, according to space.com. No word on whether Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck have been contacted by researchers yet. In all seriousness, the asteroid has been labeled a “real threat,” but it’s only been observed for roughly half an orbit. Scientists said until they can see the asteroid make at least one or two full orbits, confidence in the calculations are not high, space.com reported. Currently, AG5, which is about 460 feet wide, has an impact probability of 1 in 625 for February 5, 2040. Scientists though are looking to see how the asteroid passes the earth in 2023 when it goes through a keyhole. For reference sake, the asteroid that may have killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago was approximately 6.2 miles wide. According to space.com, keyholes are small regions in space close to earth through which a passing object, such as an asteroid, may have its orbit shifted because of gravity into a path that could impact the earth. When AG5 passes through the 2023 keyhole, it will be

roughly 0.02 astronomical units away from earth, or roughly 1.86 million miles. But the keyhole that AG5 must pass through for it to have a legitimate shot at hitting earth in 2040 is just 62 miles wide, according to space.com. NASA said it was taking the duties of monitoring the asteroid “seriously” and said more observations need to be made before any decision is to be made about trying to deflect the asteroid with anything including a nuclear device.

“Currently, Ag5, has an impact probability of 1 in 625 for

Marijuana Billboards Targeting Seniors Popping Up Around south florida RepoRting Cynthia Demos

MIAMI (CBS4) – A South Florida man is setting out to promote the use of medical marijuana. Billboards are popping up along Sample Road in Broward County that are targeting senior citizens. The more ornate billboard says, ‘Legalize Medical Marijuana. I’m a patient not a criminal’ and another depicts an elderly person in a wheelchair. Down the road, another billboard reads ‘Reschedule Medical Marijuana, one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man.” CBS4’s Cynthia Demos spoke with folks who drove by the billboard. “For my family I don’t like it,” said Roseanne Alves. “Marijuana is a gateway drug,” said Zed Castro. The billboards are the work of 69-year-old Robert Platshorn. Platshorm said he spent 30 years in prison for smuggling marijuana, a substance he says can help people and shouldn’t be illegal. He doesn’t want others sent to prison for what he calls, ‘not committing a crime’, so he is trying to make it legal. “The billboard is a way to bring attention to the cause,” Platshorn said. In the four years he’s been out of prison he started his cause, “The Silver Tour” to promote the legalization

of marijuana for seniors. “They have the time, the inclination and the need,” he said. Irvin Rosenfels, 59, is one of Platshorn’s biggest supporters. “It’s different this time because the population has gotten older,” said Rosenfeld, who is a stockbroker in Fort Lauderdale and one of the four people in the United States with a medical okay from the federal government to smoke marijuana. “I am living proof it works,” said Rosenfeld. For 29 years, the government has paid for his marijuana, the 10 to 12 joints he smokes a day. Rosenfeld said he needs it to help control his bone tumors and it’s saved his life. “It can help millions of people,” Rosenfeld added. Tens of thousands of people will see the billboards every day for a month, and that is just the beginning of this campaign. The two billboards together cost $5000 but Platshorn also does speaking engagements and before he went to prison he was a pitch man on TV for things like knives and other items. He plans to mix his talent with his passion and put together a 30 minute infomercial to air on cable TV. “It’s the best way to get our message out and really educate the senior population on how they can live a more comfortable life and stop relying on pills,” said Platshorn.

On a Monday afternoon Miami Seaquarium’s new ropes course is packed with tourists. Attendance is climbing, new attractions are opening, and Seaquarium President Andrew Hertz is hiring. “Anytime you can give someone a job. Any chance you have to give someone an opportunity to wear the uniform with pride, it’s a wonderful thing.” Hertz said. The surge in tourism at the Seaquarium is not isolated. It can be seen across South Florida. Port Miami is booming, collecting four million passengers a year. That’s the most of any port anywhere in the world. “I think it quite simply has to do with the Miami brand. People want to be in Miami,” Paula Musto with Port Miami explained. Before cruising Monday, Sheila McNulty spent $800 over the weekend to be here. “The kids were egging me on to stay here just because it’s a fun place.” McNulty said. With three new cruise lines and three brand new ships arriving later this year the port is headed for a record year. “Record expenditures, record number of visitors, record satisfaction levels,” said Bill Talbert of Miami’s Greater Convention and Visitor Bureau. Records is all Talbert talks about these days. The numbers don’t lie; for 20 months tourist taxes have been rising, and it’s not chump change. Tourist taxes are up 16% for February over last year. It also appears to be speeding up. Miami International traffic for February was up nearly 10%. “We are very bullish on the future; very bullish,” Talbert told CBS4. “Travel and tourism is going to keep increasing.” So what changed? The weather? The sand? CSI Miami viewership? Talbert believes it’s simply Miami’s brand. “The world can’t get enough of Miami…right now,”

Talbert said. Some would call that a bubble. Even if it is though, it appears to be just beginning. “Miami is on the forefront. Miami is the ice cutter going through the glaciers. We are clearing the path for the rest of Florida to follow,” Hertz said. How hot is Miami? New York’s Kennedy Airport is the busiest airport in the nation for international flights. Predictions are Miami will surpass it this year though. It means the future looks bright if the trend continues. So you are probably wondering where is everyone coming from? According to the Department of Transportation our number one visitor comes from New York. That’s followed by Atlanta, Brazil, Chicago and Dallas.

Luxury dental spas Attracting Scared Patients reporting Cynthia deMos Most of us dread the dentist. Vanessa Santiago was no exception. “As a child I do remember crying and screaming,” said Santiago. “It was not something I enjoyed.” But if you add complimentary champagne, a spa robe and slippers for free. Paraffin wax to make your hands and feet soft and music plus cucumbers for the eyes, opinions may change. Fort Lauderdale dentist, Dr. April Patty came up with the spa like solution. All the extras are designed to retain business for Dr. Patty because competition is tough. Dentists across the country have been business decline since the economy dipped two years ago. With cuts in jobs and dental coverage, dentists have been trying to find ways to boost business. “We want to pamper our clients,” said Dr. Patty. “We want to make them feel like they are not at a regular dentist’s office.” Dr. Patty pays of all the extra touches out of her own pocket. “It’s such a small expense,” she said. “But it means so much to the client. It makes a difference to how they perceive coming to the dentist office.” To create the spa ambiance, there are several small waterfalls and aromatherapy is pumped through the air vents in the office. All the extra touches seem to be working. To round out the entire spa experience you can also pay for some of the extras like eyelash extensions or fillers or even Botox. At the end of her visit Vanessa Santiago said, “My hands are softer, my feet are softer and everything smells better. I love the dentist!”

Piggybacking on the attention the Miami Marlins are getting for their new ballpark, the billboard near the park was paid for by the Physicians Committee or Responsible Medicine (PCRM) which timed the launch of the billboard for Wednesday’s Marlins home opener. The billboard shows a cartoon of a man in a hospital gown, butt hanging out the back, holding a hot dog, with the blunt message “Hot Dogs Cause Butt Cancer.” In more precise terms, the PCRM is referring to colon cancer, not something most baseball fans want to think about as they head to the ballpark to catch a game. But the PCRM said the message is serious, and that processed meats like hot dogs have been linked to colon cancer. “A person who averages a hot dog each day increases his risk of colorectal cancer by 21 percent,” said Susan Levin of the PCRM in a statement. “And many people feed their children bacon for breakfast, hot dogs for lunch, and pepperoni pizza for dinner. The cumulative risk of all that processed meat can be enormous.” In fact, the PCRM said during baseball season alone, Americans will chow down 7 billion hot dogs. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, last year 22 million of those were eaten as people watched a ballgame.

So why target the Marlins and their fans? According to the PCRM, Miami-Dade has one of the highest “butt cancer” rates in the nation, with about 13 hundred people a year diagnosed with the cancer. The group also objects to the Marlins’ “all you can eat” buffet offered at the ballpark, which apparently lets you eat all the hot dogs you want. While the organization wants to get fans thinking, they also want the Marlins to get into the act, by posting warning messages with their cancer alert anywhere in the stadium hot dogs are sold. They sent their request to Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, but as of opening night, there was no sign of the hot dog health alerts at concession stands. And why the term “Butt Cancer” on the billboards? Chalk it up to medical misunderstanding; the organization said it’s research shows more than a third of Americans have no idea where their colon is, lending new meaning to the phrase “can’t find you butt with both hands.”

Can Food Dyes Cause Or Affect

ADHD? RepoRting Cynthia Demos

Color dye is now being investigated by the Food and Drug Administration to see if certain colors added to enhance the look of the foods your kids love to eat will affect their behavior in the end. Ivana Feldmeier’s eight year old son Frederich has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. He was diagnosed in 2010 after Feldmeier noticed he was having problems in school. “I had concern cause he wasn’t improving in his learning.” She brought him to psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Bober and learned the foods her son was eating could be making his condition worse. “We know that certain chemicals that are synthetic, whether they’re dyes or whether they’re things in the environment, can sometimes cause behavioral symptoms. And a lot of the research shows recently that these food dyes may be exacerbating or producing ADHD symptoms,” said Dr. Bober. The dyes of concern are Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6. You can find it in some macaroni and cheese products, Doritos, Goldfish crackers, M&Ms, Kool-Aid, fruit punch, bubble gums and the list goes on. Researchers say the yellow dyes deplete zinc levels enough in some kids to cause hyperactivity. The Red 40 may lead to temper tantrums, aggressive behavior, fidgeting, anxiety, and inability to concentrate. Nausea and headaches are also common. In Europe, foods with synthetic dyes carry a warning label. That tactic is not used in the U.S., but is currently being researched. The FDA took a hard look at this last spring. They did say food dye could affect kids like Fredereich who already have ADHD, but they decided not to put warning labels on food because the topic still needs more research. “I am telling them my patients that they should be aware that this data is out there and that food dyes may be exacerbating ADHD symptoms. Before they put their kids on drugs that they may want to consider a restriction diet and eliminate these food dyes to see if the symptoms could be treated that way before using medication,” said Bober.

Diet

Gaining Modern Followers reportIng cyntHIa demos

Have you Heard tHe sayIng “strong Is tHe new skInny”? wHat If you could Have botH? It may be as easy as taking a fresh look at the past. The Paleo Diet, or the caveman diet, means eating and acting like a caveman. To sustain the diet, you can only eat things you gather, hunt or pick. Pinecrest resident Thad Foot, 38, said the diet gives him strength to do stand up paddle boarding. “I want to get stronger,” he said. Tara Grant, 37, did the same diet for a different reason. “I had polycystic ovarian syndrome,” said Grant. “Now, it’s gone. I had endometriosis. Now it’s gone!” At 250 pounds she also had an extra 100 pounds on her. That’s gone too for this primal girl in a modern world. She’s followed the Paleo Diet for two years. Her goal is to stay fit. Foot’s goal is to stay strong and by this spring be able to paddle board from Bimini, in the Bahamas to Miami. The two went back in time and started eating and exercising like cavemen. Foot made it easier for himself and put an entire

garden in his backyard so that all that good food could be readily available. The do’s on the diet: fruits, veggies, nuts, berries, meats. The don’ts on the diet: rice, pasta, bread, anything processed, junk food. All this was discussed among the hundreds of researchers, scientists, doctors and nutritionists from around the world who discussed the Paleo Movement. At a sold out symposium in California the focus was Ancestral health. The ides is that our DNA has changed little since the late Paleolithic Era. That means our bodies are better suited from prehistoric, not modern times. Mark Sisson, the author of the book “The Primal Blueprint” said, “We are hunters, gatherers, living in the twenty first century with all this technology and we don’t know what to do with it.” The mismatch could explain why we have so many complex degenerative disorders including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis and so much more.

Jay Scutti Off ft. LauderdaLe

Sunk in Sept. 1986, this 95 foot harbor tugboat was confiscated in a drug smuggling operation. It was bought at auction by a man who renamed it the Jay Scutti after his son. The wreck sits in 70 feet of water and is the centered between a 45 foot wreck named the Moonshot and a 95 foot sailboat Pride; the wrecks are tethered together by a cable. Divers can usually explore two of the wrecks in one dive. Lots of fish inhabit the Jay Scutti and it’s possible to enter the wreck through various openings.

The Miami Beach Wreck trek is a relative shallow dive, 50-60 feet of water, which begins with a pair of army tanks on its southern end. As divers move north, the encounter several tons of limestone boulders and more wrecks like the Rio Miami; a 105 foot tug which sits upright in about 65 feet of water.

The front side of the reef is at about 60 feet while the back side plunges to 80 feet; the reef rises to nearly 20 feet in some spots. This is a great reef dive with tons of marine life.

This trio of sunken tug boats makes up their own miniwreck trek. The Belzona Ona, an 85 foot ocean tug, was sunk in May 1990. About 75 feet away is the second tug Belzona Two in 60 feet of water. The deepest of the trio, the Belzona Three is a 100 foot tug in 85 feet of water. Not far away is the Belcher Barge #27, a 195 foot steel barge that was sunk in 1985. The barge flipped on its way to the bottom but experienced divers can penetrate it and swim the ships entire length. All of the wrecks can be visited in one wreck trek.

About a mile south of the Boca Inlet, some have termed this wreck an “Aqua-Zoo” because of all of the sea life including sharks and rays that call it home. Surrounding the wreck are tons of drainage pipes and concrete pilings which were supposed to rest on the barge’s deck. Unfortunately, when it was sunk, the ship rolled spilling the load.

Ah, Key Lime pie. It’s traditional in Florida because it’s made with the fruit of the Key Lime tree, which is yellow and about the size of a marble, and grows in people’s back-yards. If it’s made with the juice of the traditional green Persian limes you can buy anywhere, it’s not quite the same. Your pie should be yellowgreen, not lime green, and tart enough to make you pucker. Virtually every restaurant in South Florida offers it, and most markets sell it. Each of these pies is recommended, but the fun is trying each one to make your own choice.

Joe’s Stone Crab MiaMi Beach, FL - LoesstonecraB.coM Joe’s is one of the most famous restaurants in South Florida, and, of course, it’s known for its stone crabs, meaty claws, served chilled, with a mustard sauce. Many believe you haven’t truly dined in Miami unless you’ve eaten at Joe’s. But we do not live by claws alone; almost as famous as the crabs is Joe’s Key Lime pie. Many consider it the best of breed, and it certainly does live up to that claim. Baked for Joe’s using the restaurant’s traditional recipe, it offers a decadent graham cracker crust, a very tart filling, and a dollop of whipped cream to finish. Delicious. Let everyone wait in that long, long line of people waiting for your table while you indulge. You can order a pie online, or make it yourself; find the recipe here.

Blond Giraffe Key Lime Pie Factory 6 Locations - BLondgiraFFe.coM A true Key Lime pie is rich and creamy, almost like custard, not like a lemon meringue pie, where the filling is almost gooey. Purists cover their Key Lime pie with whipped cream, but there is a school that thinks meringue is fine as well, and that’s what you find at the Blond Giraffe. They have shops dotting Key West and one in Marathon, and they serve a tasty tart pie capped with meringue, with something unique: a crust made of crushed vanilla cookies. It’s not the traditional graham cracker you find in most Key Lime pies, but it works. The pies are not made on site; they’re shipped from a factory about 100 miles to the north, but taste one and you won’t care where they were made. Want something unique? Try the Key Lime pie dipped in chocolate, on a stick. It’s almost a sin.

Terry’s Key Lime Pies davie, FL - neWrivergroves.coM A trip to this iconic center for South Florida citrus is a two-for-one deal; not only can you get the Key Lime pie that was instrumental in having that dessert declared the official Pie of the state of Florida, you can get oranges (in season) and other citrus products from the only remaining orange grove in South Florida. The Key Lime pie is just one of a host of pies house-made at the grove, and they taste like you made them at home. Creamy, tart filling in a luscious graham cracker crust, topped with a more-than generous slathering of whipped cream, they are a great dessert. But while key lime purists frown at people who mess with the traditional formula, Terry’s offers variations, some seasonally. They include a Pumpkin Key Lime pie and, in a combination of two of Florida’s favorite flavors, an Orange Key Lime pie. You can get traditional Key Lime in smaller tarts, and if you fall in love with them but don’t want to drive, Bob will deliver, though it’s not cheap. Take note: pies do run out, so come early for the best chance of satisfying your sweet tooth.

Ice Box Cafe MiaMi Beach, FL - iceBoxcaFe.coM Most Key Lime pies are not what you’d call thick; they are so rich, you really can’t eat a huge piece without dismissing your diet, but at the Ice Box Cafe, their bakers believe you can’t get enough of a good thing. That’s why they serve their creamy, tart Key Lime pie deep-dish style. The crust is graham cracker, and robust, and the custard-like filling never seems to end. It’s an outstanding slice, if not a bit pricey; you can buy a while pie at the market for what you pay for a slice here. However, it’s well worth a try, and the other baked goods at the Cafe are worth a look. Indulgent.

Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe Key West, FL - KeyLiMeshop.coM It’s almost a reason in itself to travel from Miami to the Keys. Kermit’s Key Lime pies have been praised on nationally broadcast TVfood shows, and there’s a reason. This is a truly traditional pie, with a rich graham cracker crust, smooth, tart filling, and dotted with whipped cream. The filling will make your lips pucker about, but that’s the best part of a great Key Lime pie. If you like the lime, this shop is for you. You can find jelly, marinades, honey, and even wing sauce made with the juice of the Key lime. You could create a whole Key lime-themed meal with what you find here. You can even order online!

“Most of us know all doctors are not the same. Doctor Natasha Smith literally saved my quality of life. I suffered from severe headaches. Doctors, hospitals, pain medicine, hundreds of dollars later and still the pain continued. I was introduced to Dr. Smith one time and she immediately identified the area of my concern. Fast forward two months and I am in the wellness phase of my program with her. My quality of life has returned. Thank you Dr. Natasha Smith for saving my life!” gerald a . brown , miami , florida
